EARTH MATTERS Being responsible stewards of planet Earth is a crucial commitment for the Science Center. We offer programming for guests to highlight the importance of preservation, conservation, and sustainability and how everyone can make a difference. It's important for us to pair informational resources with on-site activities to make sure that we "walk the talk." For example, many of the animals in Life are part of the Species Survival Plan, which is managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to ensure genetic diversity, demographic variance, and biologically sound populations for threatened species.

Operationally, OSC practices sustainability in various ways. The food available for purchase at 4Roots Cafe is sourced from local farmers as much as possible. Our HVAC system is magnet-driven, and all our light furnishings are LED. Our building is partially powered by solar panels installed on our roof, and our exterior glass is coated in a UV film to protect from UVA and UVB rays. We also incorporate conservation into our programs, so you might want to catch the Calibrating Carbon or Conservation Catastrophe next time you are able. Seafood Watch helps teach guests about sustainable fishing, and the Tiny Green Home shares tips to reduce waste.

CAN YOU SPOT IT?
