LETTERS FROM EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

We’re so pleased to welcome you back to The Great Gatsby. This ballet has quickly become a favorite—for us, and clearly for you, too.

This work captures all the shimmer and shadow of the Jazz Age. It’s not just the Charleston and flapper dresses—it’s the longing, the illusion, and the heartbreak beneath the glitter. And our dancers don’t just dance—they act, they inhabit, and they tell this story with remarkable depth and nuance.

With the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Julian Pellicano, accompanying us, the performance becomes even more immersive. The music, the movement, the staging—all come together to transport us to a time that still feels eerily familiar.

As we close a season filled with beauty, passion, and bold storytelling, it feels fitting to end with a story about hope, illusion, and the ache of reaching for something just out of reach.

Thank you for sharing this journey with us. We’re honored to bring this story—and this season—to life.

With gratitude,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to The Great Gatsby, a production that brings the glamour, intrigue, and emotional depth of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic story vividly to life on our stage.

This performance is a shining example of what happens when extraordinary artistic forces come together. We are especially grateful to the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, whose live accompaniment adds remarkable richness and sweep to this experience here at the stunning Dr. Phillips Center.

We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to Truist, Orlando Health, and the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation for their generous support of this program. Their investments play a vital role in making productions like The Great Gatsby possible and in ensuring that ambitious, world-class work continues to reach our stage and our community.

As we bring this season to a close, we do so with deep gratitude and immense pride. This has been a year defined by bold storytelling, breathtaking performances, and unforgettable milestones. Ending the season with The Great Gatsby, a work bursting with energy, elegance, and flair, feels like the perfect celebration.

Your belief in our work allows us to dream bigger, reach further, and create art that resonates long after the curtain falls. Thank you for joining us on this unforgettable journey through music, movement, and story, and for being such an essential part of everything we do.

With deepest thanks,

SYNOPSIS

It’s 1917 in Louisville, Kentucky and outside a military base, a young Daisy and Gatsby say goodbye as he departs for the war in Europe. Daisy is left alone, distraught and unsure of what her future holds. Her best friend, Jordan, arrives and convinces her to attend a function at the dance hall in an attempt to lift her sunken spirits. There, handsome polo player Tom Buchanan pursues Daisy, struck by her beauty and initial disinterest. He is relentless and eventually his charisma wins over the vulnerable Daisy.

Five years later in New York City, Nick Carraway steps off the train to begin a new job and spend time with his cousin Daisy, now married to Tom and living in the stylish area of East Egg on Long Island. During Nick’s first visit to the Buchanan estate, he meets Jordan, now a famous golfer, and an emotional Daisy confesses that her life is truly unhappy. A mysterious phone call from Tom interrupts the gathering and throws Daisy into a tirade. Jordan reveals to Nick that Tom has a mistress somewhere in the city.

Nick returns to his bungalow in West Egg, reflecting on the events of the day. At the mansion across the garden, he sees a lone figure gazing over the bay. As the figure moves into the light, he watches Gatsby lost in thought - seemingly pulled toward the green light of Daisy’s dock across the water.

The next day, Tom and Nick take a trip into the city, stopping at a gas station in the Valley of Ashes. In this wasteland between Long Island and New York City, Nick meets George, the mechanic, and his wife Myrtle. It becomes apparent that Myrtle is Tom’s mistress. Soon after Tom and Nick leave, Myrtle makes a scene and departs for the city, leaving a confused and frustrated George behind. Tom and Nick gather Myrtle from the train station in the city and make their way to the apartment Tom rents for their affair. Nick has his first glimpse of the debauchery, infidelity, and abuse surrounding him. A drunk Myrtle, desperate for Tom to leave Daisy, pushes the issue too far and sends Tom into a physical rage.

Later that week, Nick receives an invitation to a party from his mysterious neighbor, Gatsby. Soon caterers begin to arrive, preparing the grounds and mansion. That evening, the infamous spectacle of a Gatsby summer party ignites with lights, music, and an array of extraordinary characters. Jordan is in attendance and escorts Nick into the féte when he arrives. At the end of a magical evening, Gatsby introduces himself to Nick. Having learned from Jordan that Nick is Daisy’s cousin, Gatsby asks Nick to grant him a favor. Nick agrees to the seemingly strange request, and a garden tea party is arranged for Gatsby to see Daisy again.

On the morning of the tea party, Gatsby arrives at Nick’s bungalow early. Usually calm and cool, he is outwardly nervous, fretting over the decor and the weather. Just as Daisy is about to arrive, an anxious Gatsby rushes away, followed by a perplexed Nick. Daisy arrives to a beautiful but empty garden and explores the grounds, wondering why she is there. Nick returns with Gatsby and the two lovers are reunited. Nick leaves them to converse in the garden and after a few awkward moments, the two begin to rekindle the flame of love. When Nick returns, they are euphoric. Gatsby offers Daisy a tour of the mansion, and the two depart. Alone in Gatsby’s bedroom, the passion of their former lives overtakes them.

An abstract scene reflects the storylines of the main characters thus far. Tom and Daisy continue to struggle with their marriage, with Daisy spending more and more time with Gatsby at his mansion. George and Myrtle also continue to fight. George is becoming more suspicious, and Myrtle grows more desperate every day. We are given a glimpse into Gatsby’s history and how Meyer Wolfsheim, an unsavory associate, transformed a young army officer into the Great Gatsby.

The caterers have returned to the Gatsby grounds and are preparing for another summer party. Daisy has convinced Tom to attend, and they arrive with Nick and Jordan for another evening of spectacle. During the party, an overconfident Daisy and Gatsby dance a foxtrot in front of all the guests. Tom begins to suspect the affair, becoming dangerously jealous when he is embarrassed by Gatsby. The evening ends on a dark note, but Daisy sneaks a parting kiss with Gatsby, further fueling his hopes of reclaiming the past.

Daisy has arranged a luncheon at the Buchanan home, inviting Nick and Gatsby to join. Tom, still angry over events of the party, makes his feelings clear. When Daisy begins flirting with Gatsby, Tom begins picking away at the rumors surrounding the man and his questionable rise to fame. When tensions reach a boiling point, Jordan and Daisy decide a trip to the city is in order. Daisy and Gatsby take Tom’s car, while Jordan and Nick depart with Tom in Gatsby’s vehicle. Tom, Nick, and Jordan arrive at the scene of the accident moments later. Tom is beside himself, but cannot show any remorse over the tragic scene. George is in a catatonic state over the death of his wife, his sanity flattering with each passing moment. Tom reveals to him that the yellow car involved is owned by Gatsby, and George vows to seek revenge.

At the Buchanan home, Daisy is in shock. She was driving the car when it struck Myrtle. Overwhelmed with what her life has become, Daisy realizes she has gone too far. When Tom, Nick, and Jordan arrive, she sends her friends away to be alone with Tom. The couple reconcile their marriage. Daisy keeps the truth about Myrtle to herself. Outside the Buchanan house, Nick finds Gatsby hiding in the garden. He is still convinced he can win Daisy back, and that it’s not too late for a future together. Nick, frustrated and distraught over his friends blind ambitions, tries to tell Gatsby he must let it go. Gatsby finally agrees to leave, telling Nick that Daisy promised to call the next day.

The next morning, Gatsby waits by the pool for the phone call from Daisy. Nick checks in on his friend before he departs for work. A shadowy figure appears on the grounds and sees the yellow car. Gatsby, deep in thought, continues to wait for Daisy’s phone call as George steps out from the shadows. He shoots Gatsby and, seconds later, takes his own life. The funeral for Gatsby, arranged by Nick, is a somber affair attended only by the mansion staff and few guests of parties past. Nick reflects on the bizarre and tragic events of the summer - the twisted lives in which he became entangled, the dark and selfish side of society. His only respite is remembering Gatsby and his singular obsession with reclaiming past love - his never-ending hope and unwavering belief.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

After his dance career, Jorden Morris studied teaching and choreography at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and later dance and theatre arts at New York University. He trained in French choreography and pedagogy with Claude Bessy and Serge Golovine at the Paris Opera and later with Russian masters Sergei Berejnoi and Tatiana Terekhova at Boston Ballet.

Morris’ elite training led to artistic leadership at RWB where he premiered his first work – an interpretation of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. He later joined Boston Ballet’s artistic staff and choregraphed two pieces for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Canada.

From 2002 to 2013, Morris served as RWB’s associate school director and was commissioned to create his first, full-length production – Peter Pan, the company’s best-selling production, surpassed only by his Moulin Rouge® the Ballet, whose grand debut required performances to be added.

Morris directed and choreographed Head Start/Feet First, a collaboration between the RWB and intercity academic schools, which resulted in Canada’s popular children’s television show, “The Toy Castle,” in which he also starred. Morris premiered two other works at RWB - The Doorway, inspired by the poetry and voice of Leonard Cohen; and MOA, inspired by the artist Egon Schiele.

While Moulin Rouge® toured the world, Morris’ Peter Pan was being performed by the RWB, Pittsburgh Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre.

In 2019, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre premiered The Great Gatsby, Morris’ glamorous ballet with an original score by composer Carl Davis. Before being named its artistic director, Morris came to Orlando Ballet in 2020 as Artist in Residence and staged three grand ballets. In 2023, he debuted his newest creation, a reimagined production of The Nutcracker, a highlight of Orlando Ballet’s 50th anniversary season.

ARTISTIC TEAM

As Associate Artistic Director at Orlando Ballet, Lisa Thorn Morris, who joined Orlando Ballet in 2015, has significantly contributed to the success of the professional company’s artistic development.

Lisa enjoyed a 20-year dance career as an artist with the Kansas City Ballet where she performed numerous principal roles by some of the world’s greatest choreographers including favorite roles by Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Todd Bolender, August Bournonville, Merce Cunningham, Agnes DeMille, Nacho Duato, Ruth Page, Marius Petipa and Twyla Tharp, to name a few.

While at Kansas City Ballet, Lisa transitioned to serve as Associate Ballet Mistress before being elevated to Ballet Mistress in Residence.

In addition to dancing professionally, Lisa has also choreographed for numerous organizations including Orlando Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Actors Theatre of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Youth Ballet. Lisa’s choreographic skills and success led to her being named 2005’s Emerging Choreographer at the Craft of Choreography Conference.

Lisa earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in Dance, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Missouri where she also served as an Adjunct Professor at the Conservatory of Music and Dance.

Lisa also serves as the stager for Artistic Director Jorden Morris’ highly popular ballets including ©Moulin Rouge – the Ballet, Peter Pan, The Great Gatsby, and Deverell. She spent two years as choreographic assistant to Morris in the development and world premiere of his new multi-million-dollar production of The Nutcracker during Orlando Ballet’s 2023-2024 season.

HEATH

Throughout his career, Heath had the opportunity to perform featured roles in a widely varied repertoire that included renowned creators such as: John McFall, Jorden Morris, Christopher Wheeldon, James Kudelka, Twyla Tharp, David Bintley, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jorma Elo, Val Caniparoli, Helen Pickett, Liam Scarlett, Jiri Kylian, Alexander Eckman, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Michael Pink, and Ohad Naharin. Heath received critical acclaim for his performances and was recognized as one of ArtsATL’s “30 under 30” and Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”.

In 2017 Heath co-founded Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Beyond bringing his skills to the stage for TMBT, Gill served on the Board of Directors and as the company’s Production Director and Resident Choreographer. In his time at Terminus, he created many full evening dance works and his production, Marley Was Dead, To Begin With was named “Best Dance Production of 2020” by ArtsATL. He continues to aid the organization in a Board Emeritus role.

Since joining the team at Orlando Ballet, Heath has continued to present and create new works for the company including Confronting Genius, The Next Big Thing, and Memento. He also continues his creative endeavors by serving as a guest choreographer for other companies and as a stager for Kenneth Tindall’s works. Heath has a sincere love for coaching and is thrilled to be passing his skill and love of the artform on to the next generation as Orlando Ballet’s Rehearsal Director.

A STANDING OVATION

Orlando Ballet celebrates the retirement of company member Israel Zavaleta Escobedo following eight seasons of artistry.

Israel Zavaleta Escobedo began his dance career at age 15 a er leaving Mexico, his parents, and little brother to train at Orlando Ballet School having been invited by teacher Olivier Munoz. He spent about 1.5 years at the school before joining the ballet’s second company. Speaking no English, the teen let his artistry do the talking but also credits Orlando Ballet instructor Gonzalo Espinoza for helping him learn English and adjust to his new life.

“It was all very scary because I didn’t know anyone here, didn’t know the language, and I didn’t know the culture,” he recalls, adding that there were times when he would call his mom and share the di culties of his new life. “I thought, I just want to go home. I can’t make it.” But he also remembered how his mother who, with Israel’s father, drove him on a daily, four-hour round trip to ballet lessons. Because of this, Israel stated, “I knew that I just couldn’t quit.”

His rst featured role was the Candy Cane solo in Robert Hill’s production of The Nutcracker, a high-pro le role for an OBII dancer. Soon a er, he received his contract with the company, a transition Israel describes as “meaningful.”

His commitment paid o . His rst principal role was as Mowgli in Orlando Ballet’s 2021 production of The Jungle Book, a career highlight. The role required a good deal of acting and a bit of courage; his entrance involved swinging upside down on a vine across stage. “It was so much fun!”

Now, at age 26, a er a near decade on stage, Israel has matured along with his priorities. The time is right, he says, for a new chapter. His nal performance with Orlando Ballet will be as Nick Carraway in Jorden Morris’ production of The Great Gatsby, one of Israel’s favorite roles.

Israel expresses profound gratitude to Artistic Director Jorden Morris and Associate Artistic Director Lisa Thorn Morris for their encouragement. Also to Orlando Ballet in general for the opportunities to progress through Orlando Ballet School, second company, and ultimately into the professional company. He adds that he remains grateful to the audiences, his fellow dancers, and the ballet board for their support.

It’s no surprise that he will continue to work in the art form. For the past several seasons, Israel has captured Orlando Ballet’s promotional photography, creating the striking imagery that brings each production to life.

Perhaps his most transformative experience was meeting and marrying former dancer Kellie Fulton, with whom he was partnered in The Great Gatsby.

Israel says his focus now is to be a good husband, build a life with Kellie, continue to grow professionally, and try new things. “I came here with a big suitcase full of dreams, hoping for the best, so all of this is way beyond what I expected.”

“Orlando Ballet is not just a company for me; it is an actual family.”

WHEN OUR DOCTORS SEE YOU, THEY SEE THEMSELVES.

And not just our doctors. Our entire team leads with empathy to deliver personal care you can feel.

WHAT SETS US APART: OUR ORLANDO BALLET FAMILY

Orlando Ballet is more than a company—it is a movement, a family, and a force of artistry that transcends borders and generations. None of it would be possible without you — our generous donors, whose support fuels everything we do. Thanks to you, our 27 company dancers from seven countries, along with 16 dedicated OBII dancers, can bring world-class performances to life, captivating audiences and inspiring the next generation of artists.

Your generosity extends beyond the stage and into our Academy, where we welcome students as young as 18 months and nurture aspiring pre-professionals toward their dreams. Because of you, 35% of our Academy graduates earn a coveted trainee position, 20% of those trainees rise to our second company, and 80% of our company dancers once stood in the very same second company ranks— a testament to the power of the opportunities you provide.

The impact doesn’t stop there. Through 140 residencies held by our 25 teaching artists, we have reached over 1,800 individuals, from age four to an inspiring 103-year-old. Our talented instructors have traveled more than 40,000 miles, ensuring that dance is accessible to all. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to provide over 900 pairs of ballet shoes to the community, creating small steps that lead to big dreams.

Your support isn’t just a donation—it’s the heart of our mission. Every performance, every class, and every life we touch is because of you. From the stage to the studio, from the youngest dreamers to the most seasoned professionals, your generosity makes it all possible.

This is the impact of your giving. This is Orlando Ballet, made possible by you.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

We proudly support the Orlando Ballet because it represents the very best of what the arts bring to a community: beauty, discipline, storytelling, and inspiration.

Ballet is more than a performance to us. It is a living art form that requires extraordinary dedication, sacrifice, and grace. The dancers of the Orlando Ballet embody these qualities every time they step on stage. Their commitment, athleticism, and artistry deserve not only admiration, but active support.

We believe in dressing up and showing up – honoring the tradition of ballet as an elevated cultural experience while welcoming others to discover its magic.

The Orlando Ballet creates an environment where elegance and accessibility coexist, allowing audiences of all ages and backgrounds to experience world-class performances right here in our community.

Supporting the Orlando Ballet also means investing in education and outreach. By helping bring ballet to the community, we are nurturing creativity, discipline, and confidence in young people and ensuring that future generations have access to the arts. These programs strengthen our cultural fabric and make Orlando a more vibrant, enriched place to live.

Above all, we support the Orlando Ballet because art matters. It connects us, moves us, and reminds us of what is possible when passion and purpose meet. We are honored to stand behind an organization that uplifts its artists, inspires its audiences, and keeps the timeless beauty of ballet thriving in our community.

With gratitude and admiration, – Dr. Marc and Nancy Sharfman
