One of the most popular stops in Redwoods National Park, Lady Bird Johnson Grove offers a level 1.3-mi. trail through majestic old-growth redwoods. From Hwy 101 just north of Orick, take Bald Hills Road east 2.5 mi. to the parking lot and trailhead. Unlike most well-known groves, which are situated much closer to sea level, Lady Bird Johnson Grove sits at 1,200 ft. in an upland environment, sunnier and more cheerful than that of lowland Redwoods. From the Elk Meadow Day Use Area, a prime location for viewing Roosevelt elk, take Davison Road, a scenic 6-mi. dirt road to Gold Bluffs Beach. Following the beach for 3 mi. takes you to a 1-mi.-long canyon with 80-ft.-high walls completely covered in five different varieties of fern. The loop trail follows the creek with seasonal bridges, then winds back through the forest. A permit is required May 1–Sept. 15 to access the Gold Bluffs Beach/Fern Canyon parking area.

Pacific Coast, viewed from the Klamath Overlook on Requa Road in Redwood National Park, provides a sweeping vista. On a clear day you can see the Klamath River flowing into the ocean, the long sand spit at its mouth, and the spectacular coastline to the south. Along the south bank of the river you can see the remains of an old wagon road that ran from Arcata to Crescent City in the 1890s.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park about 10 mi. east of Crescent City, Stout Grove is home to towering coast redwoods more than 300 ft. tall and waist-high sword ferns. It’s an easy but spectacular walk along a flat, wide loop trail about 0.6 mi. long. The grove served as an exterior location for the 1983 motion picture Return of the Jedi.
