The Board's Corner Welcome to the first Board Corner. This section is dedicated to communicating the key activities of OLCC’s Board of Governors. In each Birchbark, we will highlight both near term activities and longer-term initiatives to keep the membership up to date on important and relevant strategic and governance issues. Our top priorities for 2022 are to develop a long-term strategic plan, implement new member orientations and continue to update and align the master planning process, including the renovation of the Racquet House which started in early April. The Board is embarking on an important effort to improve our governance and long-range planning to ensure the continued health of the club and maximum enjoyment for members.The strategic plan will look out on a five-year rolling basis and will be the foundation on which all club activities are connected and aligned. It will focus on management, membership, facilities and infrastructure, member amenities, financial planning, and governance. We consulted with Kopplin Kuebler & Wallace, an advisory firm for premium country clubs, to assist us in developing the strategic planning process. Our first step was to align the goals and objectives of the Board and the committees which was completed and sent out a few weeks ago and can be accessed on our website. Next, we will establish longer range goals that will also be published when completed. We have a lot more work to do and will communicate the progress as we go.
New member orientation is back. These sessions are designed to help new members get the most out of their membership. It will also acquaint new members with the Club’s rules, etiquette, traditions, privileges, and responsibilities of membership. Come out and meet our staff and department heads while learning about our numerous amenities, services, and activities. Orientation will be mandatory for all new members. Please look for announcements on the dates and times for these sessions. Lastly, we have rolled out a new Member Welcome Center on the OLCC website to introduce you to all the ways that you can get involved in your new home away from home. The Racquet House renovation has started! The renovation plan is on our web site including renderings of the final design. We expect the renovations to be complete by this fall, in time for paddle season! Lastly, we are immensely proud about our recent recognition as a Distinguished Club. To be a Distinguished Club is to be one of only a few, highly selected private clubs that are recognized as providing a Member Experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world! Have a great Spring and we look forward to seeing you back at OLCC.

My name is Sarah Harris and I am the new OLCC Director of Catering as of November, 2021. I’ve already met some amazing members and I look forward to meeting more of you and your family as the season begins. All the members I have met so far, along with the staff, have been welcoming and I’m very excited to be part of the team. My Club experience began at the Detroit Athletic Club. I was part of the catering team for 7 years followed by a season at Oakland Hills. I am excited to see and experience a summer season at OLCC! We have already kicked off the season with some great club events and we have many others in the works for the year. I am looking forward to experiencing my first Mother's Day at OLCC.
June we will switch gears and have an opportunity to celebrate dad on June 19th followed by our annual Smoke on the Water, Fire in the Sky on June 25th. With the warm weather coming in, summer is a great time to host events at the club. From graduations, birthday parties, weddings and more; don’t forget to give us a call if you have a private event that needs planning! Myself along with our Assistant Director, Atara Krakoff, are ready to help you plan and make your next event special! I look forward to meeting all of you this season. 2022 Golf News A Letter from Brian
We hope you’ve been enjoying the spring season so far, and summer will soon be upon us! We’re continuing to roll out our updates for 2022, from ClubUp software to enhance your caddie experience to continued planning on our member travel program. I’ll highlight some specific areas below Brian Sleeman and invite you to contact us PGA Head Professional with any questions on these or other topics any time. We’re here to help you make this your best golf season yet! Our tournament program has already begun, with the President’s Cup match play bracket underway and the Early Bird tournament on May 7. As a reminder, information for all of our events may be found on the web calendar, with registration available via Golf Genius. Men’s League has begun, with Couples’ League soon to follow and Women’s League scheduled to begin in mid-July. The Tin Lizzie is just around the corner, with The Players Invitational shortly afterward. Our women’s tournament program is also beginning in June, with the Ringer Tournament, Pink Shirt Invitational, and Member-Member in the last two weeks of the month. Please reach out to the golf professionals with any questions on our event schedule any time. The Golf Shop is well-stocked with golf, tennis, and casual apparel for men, women, and juniors. Golf bags and other accessories continue to arrive on a daily basis. Please be sure to follow the Golf Shop’s Instagram account at @orchardlakegolfshop for the latest updates as they occur. We’re also pleased to partner with you on any corporate orders for gifts to share with your staff or clients. We continue to host tech representatives from each of the major vendors for specific club-fitting days throughout the summer season. Junior golf will also begin in early June, with an enhanced threeday schedule offering instruction opportunities Tuesday through Thursday. For adults, Christina Ricci and Stan Utley will be with us during the first full week of June with a variety of camps covering both the short game and long game. Food & Beverage Update Spring has finally sprung on the Orchard Lake campus!
With dining well under way for the season, I would like to thank the membership for your support as we ventured into more dining opportunities over the offseason this year. Chef ’s theme night buffets on Dave Parkin Thursdays and Fridays in Food & Beverage Director February and March were well regarded and well attended! As we expand our offerings with events like St. Patrick’s Day and March Madness, we welcome your feedback so we can continue to improve and provide you with the level of service you have come to expect from OLCC. Now that the dining room is open and banquet events are ramping up, you will be sure to see some new and familiar faces alike around the club house. The majority of our 2021 food and beverage staff have returned this year and we have added some great new team members to the staff. We have invested heavily in recruitment and training this offseason and are excited to say
that the tides of the staffing market have finally begun to turn in our favor! In addition to some new faces, you will find a fully revamped wine program in our dining room. We have reviewed our wine sales, listened to member feedback and preferences, and curated our offerings to better reflect our typical diner here at the club. We will also be featuring some excellent and carefully crafted cocktails in the pub this year and our bar team is already hard at work cultivating our next specialty cocktail menu to change with the seasons. With warmer weather on the horizons, we look forward to integrating live music performances, wine dinners, and other great programming in our dining areas. Please be sure to check your emails and text alerts to learn more about what happenings and events are going to be taking places around the club as the year unfolds. 2022 is certainly shaping up to be a tremendous year here at Orchard Lake. Whether it’s your first, thirtieth, or somewhere in between, welcome to a fresh summer of Orchard Lake Tennis! As many of you know, we have made some exciting adjusments down in the tennis area. Although Lincoln Wirgau, USPTA some construction may Director of Racquets be ongoing, we will have a full summer of tennis fun. It is almost any day until the courts are fully cleaned off, the lines put down, and nets are up! Junior summer programming will begin the week of June 7th. For those still in school, we will be offering after school classes for the first 2 weeks of the season to accommodate the conflict. This way, all juniors will have the option to get a full 8 weeks

of practice in before the Inter-Club Tennis Finals. This year’s season-end tournament will be hosted at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club! Please remember that all kids must be in “Tennis Whites” when they come onto the OLCC tennis courts. Please see below for the new junior class schedule: Adult program offering has been extended to accommodate for both the earlier risers and nighttime classes. All the classes are according to level based on the structure of Beginner/Advance Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced designation. We will also have Pickle Ball classes for those interested in trying out a new racquet sport. Sailing News 2022 A letter from Bruce Lilley
Oh boy is it getting exciting around here! So much happening as our team readies the waterfront and our Sailing Academy for the 2022 season. Sailing Academy? Yup. Last year it was dubbed the “Sailing Center” - this year it’s an Bruce Lilley Academy? Really? Yup. Waterfront/Sailing Center Director Since the Delta Team assaulted the OLCC beach head back in 2019, the focus has remained singular constant improvement. Thus far, DT has delivered on that mission in spades, and this year will continue the trajectory. Some highlights for this season include: • Two new Flying Scots will join our fleet (Constellation and Patriot) • A new larger 25’ “Tri-Toon” will be added to the dock • Expanded Members Dock to facilitate increased use • Modest improvements to the landscape of the north • Full spectrum of sailing Clinics designed for every level of experience • Full and Half Day “charters” will now be available on both our “toons” • First ever “inter-club” racing confirmed with CrescentSail/ Yacht Club(more to confirm soon) • Sailing Academy “certifications” • OLCC is now established as a Nationally Recognized Flying Scot Fleet - #213! We continue to build and develop our team. as our alumna matriculate on into the “real world” this is an essential component to maintaining the high standards that are the Delta Team’s signature. Several new faces are joining the DeltaTeam this

season - Evan Crandall is a rising Junior at MSU and has deep sailing knowledge from racing with his father through the years. Bowie Cooper is a rising Junior a West Bloomfield High School and brings excellent sailing knowledge of Flying Scot’s as he has been sailing them for several years with his parents. The amazing success of the inaugural Friday Night Race League last season begins again this season Friday, MAY 13th. Our fleet is slightly truncated this season with the exit of the aged out Y boats so we will be fielding six boats on the water this season. Also of note will be the addition of a “B” fleet to include as many of our upcoming race enthusiasts as possible. Why an “A” and “B” fleet you ask? Another excellent question. Simple answer - to provide our members the broadest level of experiencing sailing/racing at all levels. So, in a succinct explanation - the A fleet is open to our more “seasoned” racers that are more familiar with starting strategies, race rules, sail trimming etc. The B fleet is for our up and coming racers to begin this exciting journey into screaming at another boat “ROOM” or STARBOARD” and confidently knowing what this means and how to determine if it is even applicable or simply posturing. Both fleets will race on Friday evenings and will alternate start times. “A” first one week then “B” goes first the next. Now that we have created this next level of racing - it's your turn to get busy and build your teams! Remember: the league is limited to 6 “A” Teams and 6 “B” Teams. One boat per team, (minimum of )two bodies on every boat is mandatory and Teams must participate in every race to remain qualified for the series. All of our traditional regattas will be part of the season as well as several new opportunities to sharpen your racing skills by participating in two very exciting FSSA sanctioned regattas being hosted here in Michigan! Every year I seem to think the same thing- it is once again hard to believe that we are putting the finishing touches and getting ready to start another great season at the Pool and the Waterfront! It seems like just yesterday that we ended our operations for the Summer of 2021.
This summer will mark my fourth here at Orchard Lake and I am excited to get back to the beautiful view that we have overlooking the lake, warm weather, and look forward to seeing the membership enjoy the events that we have planned, and the enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere down at the lake. Five Blue Carp Swimmers competed in the YMCA National Swimming Meet in Greensboro, NC. Ethan Schwab was the National Chapion in the 200 breaststroke and Christian Bouchillon finished 11th in the 100 Back. They all began their swimming careers at OLCC.

• Sunday July 10th,and Wednesday July 20th. • The annual OLCC Mini-Meet will be in the morning Friday July 15th. • This year it is our club’s turn to host the SICSA A-Finals Championships. The Preliminaries will be on Friday July 29th and the Finals will be Saturday July 30th. Hopefully the warmer weather will be here in no time so that the staff and I can get ready preparing the pool deck and the locker rooms for the 2022 season. Until then I will be putting the finishing touches on hiring an attentive, personable, and professional staff to ensure that your experience at the Pool and the Waterfront are as safe and enjoyable as possible. As always, we strive to provide you with a safe, friendly, and clean facility to make memories at. My staff and I look forward to seeing the membership again soon!
