Market Overview

The year 2025 was a landmark one for Maldivian tourism, with soaring demand from key source markets driving record-breaking visitor numbers and revenue. The Maldives welcomed a total of 2,246,516 international visitors, setting the highest-ever annual arrivals in the country’s history, a 9.8% increase compared to the previous year.

December alone made headlines, with 224,455 tourists arriving, surpassing the previous monthly record of 217,392 set in February 2024. This milestone highlights not just the popularity of the Maldives, but also the impact of expanded air connectivity, new resort openings, and strong loyalty from established markets, all fueling the nation’s sustained growth as a worldclass travel destination.

China, Russia, and the UK continue to dominate the Maldives’ tourism market, with 329,110, 278,761 and 202,172 arrivals respectively. These top markets, part of a total visitor count surpassing 2.22 million, continue to drive occupancy, support premium pricing, and strengthen the Maldives’ upscale tourism positioning. Other significant markets contributing to growth include Germany, Italy, India, the USA, France, Spain, and Switzerland, highlighting the country’s broad international appeal.

The launch of Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal marked a major milestone for the Maldives’ aviation sector in 2025, enhancing capacity, efficiency, and the passenger experience. All international scheduled and charter airlines transitioned operations to the new terminal, supporting continued tourism growth. During the year, 48 scheduled and charter airlines operated at Velana International Airport, including 41 scheduled carriers and seven charter operators. Major airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Saudia, Etihad Airways, Flydubai, Air India, and IndiGo anchored global connectivity, strengthening the Maldives’ position as a highly accessible luxury destination.

As of 2025, the Maldives features 178 operational resorts with a total of 44,697 beds. In addition, 16 hotels and 973 guesthouses offer 2,598 and 16,824 beds, respectively, while 168 safari vessels provide a further 3,356 beds, reflecting the Maldives’ diverse accommodation offerings.

On an annual basis, 2025 became the strongest tourism year in Maldivian history. Total travel receipts are projected to exceed USD 5.4 billion, comfortably surpassing the national target of USD 5 billion. The hospitality pipeline reflects this growth, with notable new openings including NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort, Nala Maldives by Jawakara, The Halcyon Private Isles and Meyyafushi Maldives.

The Maldives’ hospitality scene is entering an exciting new phase, with high-profile openings such as RAH GILI Maldives, V Villas Maldives at Mirihi, Vaagali Maldives by Vignette Collection, Trump International Hotel Maldives, and Atlantis

The Royal, Maldives. These resorts highlight a shift toward more diversified, experiential luxury, blending innovative design with wellness, bespoke dining, and immersive marine and cultural experiences, strengthening the Maldives’ global appeal as a forward-thinking luxury destination.

The opening of Velana International Airport’s new terminal marks a significant step in the Maldives’ tourism development, demonstrating the impact of modern infrastructure on growth and connectivity. With an annual capacity of 7.5 million passengers, the terminal significantly enhances the Maldives’ ability to handle rising visitor volumes while improving passenger flow and overall travel experience. From January onwards, all international airline operations have been fully transitioned to the new terminal, along with the seaplane check-in area, highlighting a transformative step forward for the Maldives’ aviation and tourism development. Looking forward, stakeholders can anticipate sustained expansion, with future growth supported by strategic infrastructure investments, innovative resort concepts, and continued enhancement of guest experiences. Lily Beach Resort & Spa

Timeless Hospitality That Feels Like Home

Embraced by the endless blues of South Ari Atoll, just a 25-minute seaplane journey from Velana International Airport, lies a name that shaped the story of Maldivian hospitality, Lily Beach Resort & Spa. Carrying a proud legacy under the Maldivian-owned Lily Hotels since its opening in 1994, Lily Beach has long been at the forefront of the country’s tourism evolution. Among the pioneers to adopt the exclusively all-inclusive concept, the resort went on to redefine indulgence long before the Maldives became synonymous with barefoot luxury. In 2009, Lily Beach introduced the Maldives’ first premium all-inclusive concept, a legacy etched into Maldivian hospitality that continues to evolve with the times while preserving its authentic Maldivian soul.

That philosophy is still the heartbeat of Lily Beach today. As one of the first properties in the country to embrace a premium allinclusive concept, Lily Beach has changed how travellers experience paradise with its eponymous Platinum Plan, The Platinum Plan became more than a list of inclusions, it became a lifestyle. Dining, fine wines, water sports, and even curated adventures, all wrapped in the promise of ease and excellence. The Platinum Plan today is a celebration of freedom, freedom to indulge, to connect, and to simply be. It’s as much about experience as it is about emotion, offering guests the rare joy of feeling completely taken care of.

The resort’s culinary spirit tells its own story. Lily Maa, the resort’s main restaurant, serves as a world tour of flavour, with its live stations and lavish buffets layered with Maldivian touches.

Tamarind brings together the authentic spices and culinary traditions of Thailand and India, while at Teppanyaki at AQVA, the expression of dining comes alive, as chefs turn heat and precision into performance. The serene adults-only “Quiet Zone” at AQVA Bar offers a peaceful escape, while Vibes Bar pulses with music, pools, games and playful evening fun.

Lily Beach’s true legacy lies not merely in its stunning setting but in the people who bring it to life and make every guest feel at home. Repeat visitors return year after year, decade after decade, drawn not only by the beauty of the surroundings but by the genuine warmth, attention, and recognition that greet them at every turn. Every interaction, from the welcoming smile at check-in to the thoughtful gestures throughout the stay, creates a sense of

belonging that goes far beyond the usual resort experience. Here, strangers arrive as guests and leave as friends, carrying with them a living legacy of connection, kindness, and moments of warmth and joy that follow them home, defining the very heart and soul of Lily Beach.

Thirty years on, Lily Beach continues to set the benchmark for what all-inclusive can be. It has no need to reinvent itself, because it was built on something timeless, the quiet assurance that true excellence doesn’t need spectacle, only sincerity. This philosophy shines through its all-inclusive experience, which brings together a generous range of dining, leisure, and relaxation offerings designed to let guests simply unwind and enjoy, without having to think about the details.

Today, Lily Beach stands not just as a resort, but as a symbol of timeless Maldivian hospitality. Its legacy of all-inclusive excellence continues to set the standard, where service feels sincere, experiences feel meaningful, and every guest feels at home in paradise.

The Spirit of Lily Beach Resort & Spa:

Shaping Exceptional Hospitality

The legacy of Lily Beach Resort & Spa is built on more than its lagoon, villas, and views, it rests on the shoulders of the people who run it. Behind every smooth check-in, thoughtfully designed menu, and well-timed gesture of service is a team of experienced leaders who understand both the operational demands of a busy resort and the emotional needs of modern travellers. Their presence is felt in the small details guests might not see, the training, planning, and quiet adjustments that keep everything flowing with ease.

Working across food and beverage, sales, and front office, they turn strategy into lived experience. Their decisions influence everything from flavour profiles and service style to market positioning, guest communication, and the rhythm of each stay. United by a shared belief in sincere, guest-centred hospitality, they ensure Lily Beach’s all-inclusive concept remains refined, generous, and welcoming, so every guest feels genuinely recognised, relaxed, and well cared for from arrival to departure. In every sense, Lily Beach is a place where guests come as strangers and leave as friends.

Adam Shareef began his journey at Lily Beach Resort & Spa in 1994 as part of the pre-opening team, starting as an F&B Supervisor. These early years gave him invaluable insight into the nuances of creating exceptional dining experiences, from personalised guest interactions and service culture to the operational precision required to run multiple outlets. Progressing through roles as Assistant F&B Manager, Manager, and ultimately Director of F&B, Shareef’s focus broadened from day-to-day operations to long-term culinary strategy. He witnessed firsthand how guest expectations evolved and how global culinary trends shaped the Maldives’ hospitality landscape, guiding Lily Beach’s F&B identity with a thoughtful balance of innovation, creativity, and respect for the resort’s heritage.

Throughout his career, Shareef’s leadership has been guided by continuous learning, adaptability, and a people-first approach. He empowers his teams, values their insights, and nurtures growth, while maintaining a culture rooted in honesty, dedication, and a passion for service excellence. These principles underpin Lily Beach’s 24-hour all-inclusive experience, ensuring each offering is both personalised and memorable, and every culinary journey feels thoughtfully curated and immersive for guests.

Over three decades, Shareef has overseen the evolution of all-inclusive dining from a simple value-based offering to a sophisticated, experience-led concept. He believes that a truly memorable F&B experience is defined not by quantity but by thoughtfulness, creativity, and genuine guest focus. Beach barbecues, wine pairings, themed dinners, and interactive chef experiences turn each meal into a lasting moment, where service, flavours, and innovation come together harmoniously. For aspiring Maldivian hospitality leaders, Shareef highlights discipline, passion, and a service-first mindset as the keys to shaping both personal careers and the future of Maldivian tourism.

PEOPLE

Michael Wieser Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lily Hotels

With a hospitality career spanning nearly four decades, Michael Wieser brings a wealth of global experience shaped by leadership roles across Europe and Asia, and within some of the industry’s most respected brands. His professional journey has been guided by a passion for service excellence, people development, and creating meaningful guest experiences. First joining Lily Hotels in 2010, Michael was drawn to the company’s pioneering spirit and its bold move to redefine Maldivian hospitality through the country’s first premium all-inclusive concept at Lily Beach Resort & Spa.

Returning as CEO in 2025 marked a natural homecoming. Under his leadership, Lily Hotels has evolved into a more agile, future-focused organisation, embracing sustainability, innovation, and refined guest expectations while remaining firmly rooted in its Maldivian identity. In this interview, Michael reflects on growth, value-driven luxury, and the vision shaping Lily Hotels’ next chapter.

Could you walk us through your remarkable 38-year career and share what initially attracted you to join Lily Hotels in 2010? What inspired your return as CEO in 2025, and how do you feel the company has evolved since then?

My hospitality journey began 38 years ago, taking me across continents, from Europe to Asia and roles within some of the industry’s most respected brands. What has always driven me is the joy of creating memorable guest experiences and fostering environments where colleagues thrive. That passion for service excellence has shaped every decision throughout my career.

My initial connection with Lily Hotels in 2010 was a meaningful one. After years with larger global and more established chains, I was drawn to the chance to help shape a pioneering Maldivian brand. Even then, Lily Beach Resort & Spa stood out with its bold vision as the Maldives’ first premium all-inclusive resort, an innovative concept in a market dominated by traditional half-board or full-board offerings. Being part of a team redefining luxury travel in the Maldives was both inspiring and transformative.

Returning as CEO in 2025 felt like coming back home

to family. Despite exploring other ventures, Lily Hotels remained close to my heart. The opportunity to build upon its strong foundations and lead the brand into its next chapter was compelling. The company has evolved significantly, embracing technology, sustainability, and more refined guest expectations, while staying true to its core values. The dedication of the team and the elevated standards at both Lily Beach and Hideaway reflect this growth. Today, we are more agile, more guest-focused, and more committed than ever to delivering exceptional Maldivian hospitality.

As one of the Maldives’ oldest resorts, how do you identify new opportunities for growth and differentiation for Lily Beach in such a competitive market?

As one of the Maldives’ established resorts, Lily Beach holds a unique position with a rich history and loyal following. This legacy is a strength, but it also requires us to continuously innovate in a market where new resorts emerge every year. Our strategy for identifying growth and differentiation is multifaceted.

Firstly, we lean heavily into our legacy. While new resorts often focus on cutting-edge design, Lily Beach offers an authentic Maldivian charm and a sense of

established comfort that resonates deeply with many travellers. We emphasise this timeless appeal through our service, our cuisine, and the natural beauty of our island. We don’t chase every trend, but rather focus on refining and enhancing what we do best.

Secondly, we engage in continuous dialogue with our guests. Their feedback through surveys, conversations, and online reviews helps us understand evolving preferences and identify areas to elevate the experience. We are seeing growing demand for immersive cultural experiences and wellness, prompting us to integrate more Maldivian heritage into our activities and expand our wellness offerings beyond the spa to include mindful experiences and healthier dining.

Finally, we closely analyse market trends and competitor offerings to identify gaps and new opportunities for differentiation. For Lily Beach, this often means enhancing our premium all-inclusive concept, adding exclusive excursions, and introducing unique culinary experiences. We are also strengthening our sustainability initiatives, as a responsible Maldivian resort owner-operator with good stewardship as one of our core values.

Lily Beach Resort & Spa has a pioneering legacy as the Maldives’ first premium all-inclusive. The premium all-inclusive model has increasingly gained traction across the Maldives resorts. In your opinion, what defines true ‘value’ in all-inclusive offerings?

Lily Beach’s pioneering legacy as the Maldives’ first premium allinclusive resort is something we are incredibly proud of. It set a benchmark, and while many resorts have now adopted various all-inclusive models, what defines true ‘value’ in an all-inclusive offering, in my opinion, goes far beyond just including food and beverages.

For us, real value begins with transparency and genuine inclusivity. It means guests should never feel nickel-and-dimed. Our Platinum Plan is crafted to cover virtually everything, from premium wines and spirits, refined dining across multiple restaurants, curated excursions, non-motorised watersports, and signature experiences like snorkelling safaris. Guests should arrive, unwind, and trust that their holiday is fully taken care of.

Secondly, true value comes from quality and choice, not quantity. Our Platinum Plan features varied dining, from à la carte menus to themed buffets, with premium beverages rather than basic pours. Great-tasting meals for all our guests from all around the world and varying ages are key to our success. Excursions are thoughtfully curated and led by skilled guides to ensure unforgettable experiences. This focus on quality ensures guests enjoy a refined experience without compromising simply because it’s all-inclusive.

Most importantly, true value is about experience and personalisation. A meaningful all-inclusive frees guests to fully immerse in their stay, to join a sunset cruise, try a new cocktail, or enjoy a gourmet meal without hesitation. At Lily Beach, we strive to personalise this experience. Our team tailors these moments by understanding individual guest preferences, dietary needs, and special occasions. The goal is a seamless, worry-free, memorable escape. That is the Lily Beach promise of value. It is also a key reason why we have so many repeat guests at the resort.

With nearly four decades in hospitality, what major trends do you believe will define the future of resorts, and how is Lily Hotels preparing to meet these evolving demands, particularly at Lily Beach Resort & Spa?

With nearly four decades in this industry, I have witnessed countless shifts and evolutions. Looking ahead, one of the most defining trends will be hyper-personalisation driven by service. Guests increasingly expect bespoke experiences, tailored to their individual preferences, interests, and even moods. Resorts will increasingly use data analytics to understand guest needs before arrival, enabling customised itineraries, dining and activity recommendations. At Lily Hotels, we are investing in advanced CRM systems and exploring AI-driven tools to enhance responsible data insights. For Lily Beach, this translates into refining our Platinum Plan with more personalised inclusions, from private dining to bespoke excursions tailored to individual guest desires.

The second trend is sustainability becoming a core expectation. Travellers are increasingly mindful of environmental and social impact, favouring resorts that truly prioritise sustainability and community support. Lily Hotels is strengthening waste management, eliminating the use of single-use plastics, investing in renewable energy sources and engaging in marine conservation efforts. Both Lily Beach and Hideaway are committed to protecting their surrounding reefs and sharing local cultural and environmental knowledge with guests.

Thirdly, experiential travel will continue to dominate. Guests want authentic, immersive experiences rooted in culture, nature and the people. At Lily Beach, we are developing Maldivian cultural activities, from local cooking classes to local artisan interactions. We are extremely proud of our weekly Culture Live Experience at the resort. With its vast lagoon, Hideaway takes a different approach, enhancing wellness retreats, sporting experiences, mindful programs, and unique marine-based activities.

Finally, digital integration and seamless technology will become even more crucial, but always balanced with human interaction. Technology assisted check-ins, smart room features, and efficient communication platforms will elevate convenience, but never replace genuine hospitality. We are implementing robust digital infrastructure across both resorts without compromising genuine human connection.

What has been your most significant challenge as CEO, and how has it shaped your approach to managing Lily Hotels as a brand and ensuring its consistency?

Without a doubt, my greatest challenge as CEO has been navigating unprecedented global events, particularly the pandemic. This period tested every aspect of our operations, from guest safety and staff well-being to financial stability and market recovery. It was a crucible that truly shaped my approach to managing Lily Hotels as a brand and ensuring its consistency.

The immediate focus was on ensuring the safety and repatriation of guests and staff, followed by sustaining operations with minimal revenue. This required agility, innovation, and resilience, always guided by our core values: the well-being of our people and the long-term health of the brand.

This experience highlighted the value of teamwork and clear communication. We learned to anticipate rapid shifts, plan for multiple contingencies, and react swiftly to evolving circumstances. It taught me that while consistency in service and brand promise is paramount, the methods of delivery must be flexible.

This challenge also reinforced the importance of sustainable, longterm planning. We focused on investments that strengthen future resilience, from health and safety upgrades to improvements to product and digital infrastructure, and sustainability initiatives.

The pandemic, though challenging, made us stronger, more empathetic, and innovative. It taught me that true brand consistency means delivering our promise of excellence and exceptional service while staying adaptable, and that investing in our people ensures the lasting strength and future of Lily Hotels.

How do you ensure that both Lily Beach Resort & Spa and Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa maintain distinct brand personalities, while still reflecting a unified company ethos under Lily Hotels?

Maintaining distinct personalities for Lily Beach Resort & Spa and Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa, while reflecting the unified ethos of Lily Hotels, is a key priority. Lily Beach, with its premium all-inclusive Platinum Plan, is vibrant, family-friendly, and valuedriven, offering a worry-free holiday where guests can fully enjoy the Maldives. Hideaway, in contrast, caters to discerning travellers seeking privacy, expansive space, plenty of distinct experiences, and understated luxury, with tailor-made experiences and bespoke service powered by the resort’s signature butler service.

These unique identities are shaped through targeted marketing, differentiated products and services, from diverse dining and activities at Lily Beach to private villas and personalised culinary journeys at Hideaway, carefully curated design and ambience, and staff training adapted to each resort’s style. Despite these differences, both share the Lily Hotels ethos: genuine Maldivian hospitality, excellence in service, respect for the environment, and a guest-centric approach that ensures every stay is memorable.

The distinct personalities of our resorts are intentionally developed through targeted guest segmentation, tailored marketing, and differentiated offerings. Lily Beach thrives on its premium allinclusive concept, vibrant atmosphere, and diverse dining, while Hideaway is defined by its butler service, private-pool villas, distinct sporting and wellness facilities, and highly personalised culinary experiences. Their designs reflect these identities, as does their service culture, lively and engaging at Lily Beach, discreet and anticipatory at Hideaway. Yet both remain unified by Lily Hotels’ core values: genuine Maldivian hospitality, exceptional service, and deep respect for the natural environment.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind at Lily Hotels, and how would you like the brand to be remembered in the Maldivian hospitality landscape?

The legacy I hope to leave behind at Lily Hotels is multifaceted, but at its core, it revolves around two key pillars: enduring innovation and deeply ingrained purpose.

The legacy I hope to leave at Lily Hotels is built on two pillars: enduring innovation and a profound sense of purpose. I want the brand to remain a true Maldivian pioneer, continually evolving, embracing sustainability, and enhancing guest experiences while staying deeply rooted in the destination’s authentic spirit. From pioneering the premium all-inclusive concept at Lily Beach to exploring new ways to enrich wellness, culture, and personalised service, the goal is for Lily Hotels to be synonymous with dynamic evolution, always relevant, always fresh, yet deeply rooted in its Maldivian essence.

Equally important is cultivating a culture of purpose that extends beyond exceptional holidays. This means empowering our people to grow and thrive, protecting our environment through sustainable practices, and creating meaningful impact in local communities. I hope Lily Hotels will be remembered not only for its stunning resorts and experiences but for its heart, integrity, and forwardthinking vision, a brand that delivers unforgettable moments while shaping a more sustainable and responsible future for the Maldives.

PEOPLE

Laurent Driole

General Manager at Lily Beach Resort & Spa

With more than three decades in global hospitality, Laurent Driole brings a depth of experience shaped by continents, cultures, and countless guest interactions. From his early beginnings in the UK to leadership roles across Europe, Asia, Russia, Africa, and the Maldives, his career reflects a rare blend of operational rigour and human-centred leadership. Today, as General Manager of Lily Beach Resort & Spa, Laurent oversees one of the Maldives’ most respected and pioneering resorts, renowned for its authenticity, generosity, and enduring appeal.

At Lily Beach, Laurent’s philosophy is rooted in sincerity, emotional intelligence, and presence. Known for personally engaging with guests and teams alike, he believes true luxury lies not in excess, but in meaningful connection. In this interview, he reflects on leadership, evolving guest expectations, the future of Maldivian tourism, and the timeless principles that continue to guide his journey.

With a career spanning over 30 years across multiple continents, how has your leadership philosophy evolved, and which core principles have remained nonnegotiable throughout your journey?

My journey began in the Lake District, UK, working as a waiter and chef in a small, family-run 50-room hotel, where tradition, manners, and attention to detail taught me the importance of service values, respect and attention to detail. From there, I moved to Disney World in Florida, where the energetic, informal American work culture offered a stark contrast, showing me how hospitality can be shaped by lifestyle as much as by genuine care. It was a fascinating contrast that deepened my understanding of what true hospitality really means.

My career took me across Southeast Asia, where I learned the value of hierarchy, humility, and emotional intelligence; in France, my home country, I discovered the importance of communication and mutual respect, and in Moscow, the need to align personal ambition with the team’s goals.

Through these experiences, my leadership philosophy has evolved around three core principles: patience, because everyone works at their own pace; respect,

as the foundation of trust and teamwork; and leading by example, because real leadership isn’t about titles or authority, it’s about consistency, integrity, and being someone people genuinely want to follow.

And if there’s one final lesson these years have taught me, it’s that listening to our guests is what keeps us relevant. By understanding their evolving expectations, we continually improve and rediscover the essence of hospitality: to make people feel seen, valued, and truly cared for.

Having lived and worked in such a wide range of cultures, how has that shaped your view on what true hospitality means?

To me, true hospitality comes from the heart. It’s what we aim to deliver every day at Lily Beach, a sincere, human connection rather than just polished service. Financial results matter, but they should never come before warmth and authenticity; guests quickly sense whether what they experience is real or rehearsed.

I’m inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which celebrates simplicity, imperfection and time. That, to me, is modern luxury: quiet, honest and deeply human. Too many international brands bring one-sizefits-all concepts to the Maldives, driven by rigid SOPs

and bottom lines, turning hospitality into something mechanical. SOPs should guide us, not define us. In the end, true luxury isn’t about flawless standards, it’s about emotion, a genuine sense of place, and the feeling guests take home with them.

Could you share some of the standout experiences and highlights guests can look forward to during their stay at Lily Beach?

At Lily Beach Resort & Spa, every stay is designed as a journey through the senses, offering an authentic and emotional experience of the Maldives. With our signature excursion, the Ocean Adventure, guests can snorkel alongside majestic whale sharks in the sanctuary nearby, one of only three places in the world where these gentle giants are seen year-round, creating unforgettable moments of awe and connection to nature.

Equally important, Lily Beach is a paradise for families, where shared experiences create memories that span generations. Children beam with pride during sunset fishing trips, catching their very first fish, which later becomes part of a delicious family dinner, while our Teppanyaki evenings add excitement with fiery culinary performances that spark laughter around the table. Young adventurers can explore our vibrant house reef on beginner-friendly discovery dives, snorkel alongside graceful turtles, and watch in awe as dolphins leap and play on our magical Dolphin Safaris, moments that leave both children and adults wide-eyed, enchanted, and cherishing every experience together.

Couples at Lily Beach can expect truly unforgettable moments. One favourite is a private sunset on a secluded sandbank, just two loungers, champagne, and the Maldivian horizon, drone photos included, of course. We also offer our signature Royal Love Odyssey, which was inspired by guests’ special requests, like villa proposals or surprise days dedicated entirely to love. It includes a floating breakfast with lobster and caviar, a rosé-infused couple’s spa ritual, sunset champagne, and a private dinner under the stars with Kobe beef. Add a personal photographer and 51 red roses, and it really becomes a celebration of love and unforgettable memories.

At Lily Beach, we believe true luxury lies in emotion. Whether it is a child’s pride in their first catch, a family’s shared laughter at sea, or a once-in-a-lifetime romantic gesture, our mission is to transform beautiful moments into lasting emotional memories, ones that remain vivid long after our guests have left the island.

As one of the first resorts to introduce all-inclusive in the Maldives, Lily Beach’s Platinum Plan is known as one of the most generous packages. How has it evolved to stay competitive while offering value and premium selections?

Celebrating Lily Beach Resort & Spa’s 30th anniversary was a moment to reflect on our pioneering spirit. As the first Maldivian resort to introduce a true all-inclusive Platinum Plan, we set a benchmark many have sought to emulate. From the very beginning, our owner’s vision was clear, to create an experience that feels effortless, generous, and uncompromising in quality.

Over the years, the Platinum Plan has evolved into a comprehensive experience, from curated excursions to unique inclusions like cigarettes, while culinary offerings have grown increasingly refined, featuring over 80 premium wines and authentic Champagne selections. Even festive celebrations embody indulgence with caviar, foie gras, lobster, and premium cuts.

Ultimately, the Platinum Plan is about more than inclusions, it’s about emotion, trust, and sincerity. Every detail reflects our commitment to delivering a generous, transparent, and effortless experience, which is why so many loyal guests return year after year, often saying that Lily Beach remains the best.

As one of the original pioneers of Maldivian hospitality, Lily Beach carries a rich legacy. How do you continue to reinvent the guest experience and maintain that ‘wow’ factor, especially for returning guests, while staying true to the resort’s identity and founding vision?

As a pioneer of Maldivian hospitality, Lily Beach honours its legacy daily. Celebrating our 30th anniversary last year, we enter our 31st year as an independent, Maldivian-owned resort, consistently operating at high occupancies, an achievement in a market where new international brands emerge rapidly, often disconnected from the islands’ spirit.

Lily Beach stands apart for its authenticity. Nature is the true luxury, and our warm, sincere team, many with us since the beginning, serves with a genuine heart, creating moments that truly stay with guests. I greet every guest personally, meet them daily, and adjust details in real time. This closeness anticipates needs and resolves concerns instantly, long before they reach social media. When guests feel heard and valued, the real “wow” begins.

Our repeat guests embody Lily Beach’s legacy, returning not just for the island but for the people who make them feel at home. This season, one couple stayed with us for the 32nd time, showing that sincerity, attentiveness, and genuine connection are our true luxury. For us, reinvention means refining the small touches that create unforgettable feelings. Our mission remains: guests “come as strangers, and leave as friends.”

How has tourism in the Maldives changed since your first role in 1996, and what do you predict for the next decade?

Since starting in the Maldives in 1996 as F&B Manager at Club Med Farukolhufushi, tourism has changed dramatically. Resorts were simple, lagoons pristine, and experiences focused on tranquillity. That island is now part of Hulhumalé, reclaimed for development, a sign of how the country’s landscape has totally transformed.

Rapid changes around Malé highlight how tourism drives development, favouring the wealthy while remote islands maintain traditional ways of life. The evolution of tourism infrastructure reflects this shift. TMA’s scenic flights have expanded into largescale seaplane operations, moving thousands daily, impressive growth, but often at the cost of a premium guest experience. Marine environments face similar pressures, with overcrowded dive sites and unregulated liveaboards threatening the ecosystems that sustain tourism.

The Maldives’ future depends on high-value, low-impact tourism, guests who respect nature, and resorts prioritising genuine hospitality. Its unique beauty, vibrant reefs, clear lagoons, and serene landscapes must never be compromised. Yet mass tourism and short-term gain threaten this essence. Ultimately, the future lies in the Maldivians’ hands, balancing growth with preservation, ambition with responsibility, and innovation with identity to keep the Maldives a true paradise.

What key lessons have you learned over your 30+ years in hospitality that you’d pass on to aspiring hoteliers?

After more than three decades in hospitality, spanning luxury resorts, boutique hotels, international chains, island destinations, and cruise ships, certain lessons stand out and remain timeless.

First, hospitality is a discipline before creativity. While the industry may seem glamorous, its foundation is following SOPs, consistency, and operational control. Across every property I have managed, from Paris to Moscow, Africa, Borneo to the Maldives, strengthening fundamentals has been essential for creativity and guest experience to flourish.

Second, leadership is service. Managing diverse teams of 100350 taught me that authority alone isn’t enough. Being present, approachable, hands-on, and leading by example, supporting your team during crises, builds trust and delivers results.

Third, guests remember emotion more than perfection. I have worked in properties with Michelin-level dining, award-winning wine cellars, and stunning settings, yet what keeps guests returning is sincerity, kindness, and attentiveness. A warm gesture often outweighs marble, technology, or architecture.

Fourth, change is constant, and adaptability is a survival skill. Renovating resorts, opening a five-star hotel in Vietnam, managing islands during a pandemic and relaunching properties after crises taught me that flexibility is a top asset and every disruption is an opportunity to innovate.

Fifth, financial intelligence matters. A successful General Manager balances guests, owners, and staff, boosting Gross Operating Profit and Average Daily Rate, rewarding employees, and creating new revenue streams like Lily Beach’s e-shop and tours. Financial rigour ensures long-term sustainability.

Sixth, cultural sensitivity is essential. Working across Europe, the USA, Russia, Africa, Asia, and Oceania taught me that one approach rarely fits all. Respect, adaptability, and celebrating diversity are key to meaningful hospitality. Unlike robots or AI, human creativity knows no limits, and celebrating our uniqueness is what makes hospitality meaningful.

Finally, what drives me in this industry is curiosity about people, food, design, technology, and cultures, which fuels relevance and longevity in hospitality. For young hoteliers: master the fundamentals, work hard, lead with heart and by example, think with numbers, and stay curious. These principles have guided me from my early days to managing top resorts worldwide, and they still guide me today.

PEOPLE

Desislav Gospodinov Group Director of Sales & Marketing at Lily Hotels

Desislav Gospodinov is the Group Director of Sales & Marketing for Lily Beach Resort & Spa and Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa, with over two decades of experience in hospitality across Europe and the Maldives. Having previously contributed to Lily Beach from 2015 to 2017, he returns with a wealth of knowledge and a wider perspective, guiding both resorts to evolve thoughtfully while remaining anchored in their Maldivian roots. His leadership blends strategic vision with a keen understanding of guest expectations, ensuring that both properties continue to offer authentic, memorable experiences.

In this interview, we highlight Desislav’s approach to sustaining the emotional connection that keeps guests returning, his insights on market trends and emerging traveller behaviours, and how he balances innovation with the signature warmth and identity of Lily Hotels. From experience-led hospitality to evolving the all-inclusive concept, Desislav shares how he shapes the resorts’ journey while remaining true to their essence.

With two decades in luxury hospitality behind you, what is the one lesson that continues to shape your leadership style and strategic decisions at Lily Hotels today?

Long-term success is built on people and relationships, not just numbers. Results matter, of course, we operate in a highly commercial environment, but sustainable growth only comes when strategy, culture, and human connection are aligned.

Over the years, I have learned that leadership is less about control and more about clarity. Teams perform best when they understand not only what the objectives are, but why they matter. At Lily Hotels, this philosophy shapes how we approach everything from pricing decisions to market expansion. I encourage open dialogue, challenge assumptions, and empower my teams to think commercially while staying true to the guest experience.

Another key lesson is the importance of adaptability. Luxury hospitality today is vastly different from what it was even ten years ago, guest expectations, distribution, and technology have all evolved. Remaining curious, flexible, and open to change is essential. What has not changed, however, is the value of authenticity. Guests

can sense immediately when a brand is genuine, and that authenticity starts internally with leadership.

Having previously served as Director of Sales & Marketing at Lily Beach from 2015–2017, how does it feel to return now at the group level, and what stands out as the biggest change since your earlier tenure?

Returning to Lily Beach now at a group level feels both familiar and exciting. Lily Beach played an important role in my professional journey, and coming back with broader responsibility allows me to contribute with a deeper perspective shaped by experience across different brands, markets, and leadership structures.

The biggest change since my earlier tenure is the scale and sophistication of the business environment. Distribution has become more complex, data plays a much larger role in decision-making, and competition in the Maldives has intensified significantly. Today, success requires a far more nuanced approach to segmentation, revenue management, and brand positioning.

At the same time, what has remained unchanged is

the soul of Lily Beach, the warmth of its people and the emotional connection guests form with the resort. That consistency is rare and incredibly valuable. My role now is to protect that essence while ensuring the brand continues to evolve commercially and creatively in a very competitive landscape.

Lily Beach carries the legacy of a Maldivian-grown brand. Which signature experience captures that spirit most authentically, and how do you ensure it remains genuine as the resort continues to evolve?

For me, the most authentic expression of Lily Beach’s Maldivian spirit lies in the effortless way luxury and warmth coexist. It is not one single experience, but rather the sum of many moments. For instance, how guests are welcomed, how staff remember names and preferences, and how nature is woven seamlessly into the stay.

If I had to highlight one signature element, it would be the balance between generous luxury and genuine hospitality. Lily Beach does not feel staged or over-designed; it feels alive, natural, and welcoming. That is very much rooted in Maldivian culture.

To keep this authenticity intact as the resort evolves, we are careful not to chase trends blindly. Innovation is important, but it must feel organic.

Renovations, new experiences, and service enhancements are always evaluated to determine whether they feel true to who we are. Growth should never come at the cost of identity.

As the pioneer of luxury all-inclusive in the Maldives, Lily Beach set a high benchmark early on. How do you keep reimagining this concept to stay ahead of a rapidly growing competitive field?

Being the pioneer of luxury all-inclusive is both a privilege and a responsibility. The concept has evolved significantly since Lily Beach first introduced it, and today, many resorts offer some version of all-inclusive. The challenge is to remain distinctive.

Our approach is not about adding more for the sake of adding more, but about adding relevance and value. We continuously refine the experience based on guest feedback, market trends, and consumption patterns. This includes elevating culinary offerings, enhancing wine and spirits selections, and creating experiences that feel bespoke rather than standardised.

Equally important is flexibility. Modern luxury travellers value choice and personalisation. Our all-inclusive philosophy today is less about limitations and more about freedom, allowing guests to enjoy their stay flawlessly, while still feeling that their individual preferences are recognised and respected.

Repeat guests often describe Lily Hotels as their ‘home in the Maldives.’ What do you believe creates that deep sense of belonging that keeps them returning year after year?

That sense of belonging comes from emotional continuity. Guests return because they feel known, remembered, and genuinely welcomed not just as customers, but as individuals.

At Lily Hotels, we invest heavily in our people because they are

the true ambassadors of the brand. Many of our team members have been with us for years, and that continuity creates meaningful relationships with repeat guests. It is incredibly powerful when a guest arrives and is greeted by familiar faces who remember their preferences, their stories, and even their family members.

Beyond service, there is also a sense of comfort in knowing what to expect, consistent quality, generous offerings, and a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. Guests trust us, and trust is the foundation of loyalty.

How do you celebrate the distinctiveness of Lily Beach and Hideaway, yet ensure they both reflect the core essence of the Lily Hotels brand?

Lily Beach and Hideaway are intentionally different, and that is one of our strengths as a group. Each resort has a clearly defined personality and target audience.

Lily Beach is vibrant, social, and energetic, a place where couples, families, and friends come together to celebrate life. Hideaway, on the other hand, is about space, privacy, and understated luxury, appealing to guests seeking exclusivity and tranquillity.

What unites them is the Lily Hotels DNA: generous hospitality, valuedriven luxury, authenticity, and a strong emotional connection with guests. From a brand perspective, my role is to ensure that while each resort speaks its own language, they both tell the same story about who we are and what we stand for.

Given the Maldives’ competitive landscape, which emerging market shifts do you believe will most impact tourism growth in the years ahead?

The Maldives will remain a highly desirable destination, but growth will increasingly depend on how well resorts adapt to changing traveller behaviour.

One major shift is the rise of experience-led travel. Guests are no longer satisfied with beautiful villas alone; they want meaningful experiences, wellness, sustainability, and a sense of purpose in their travel choices.

Another important factor is market diversification. While traditional European markets remain strong, Asia, the Middle East, and India will play an even bigger role in future growth. Understanding cultural nuances and tailoring offerings accordingly will be critical.

Finally, digital transformation will continue to reshape how guests discover, book, and engage with brands. Resorts that invest in strong digital ecosystems while maintaining a human touch will be best positioned for long-term success.

ISLAND GASTRONOMY

Dining as a Destination

The Evolution of Resort Dining in the Maldives

Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives

Dining in the Maldives has undergone a significant transformation since tourism first emerged in the early 1970s. In the country’s earliest resorts, food was largely functional. Limited infrastructure, logistical challenges, and reliance on imported supplies shaped simple menus designed to meet basic guest expectations. Early dining concepts prioritised familiarity and practicality over innovation or cultural expression.

At the same time, Maldivians at home maintained a distinct culinary tradition built around locally available ingredients such as tuna, reef fish, coconut, rice, and spices. However, for many years, this cuisine remained largely separate from the resort experience. Local food was rarely integrated into menus in a meaningful way, as early hospitality models focused on predictability and international standards rather than destinationspecific identity.

As the Maldives developed into a global luxury destination, guest expectations evolved alongside it. Travellers began seeking experiences rather than amenities, and dining became an increasingly important part of the overall resort offering. Food was no longer judged solely on quality and service, but on how it contributed to a sense of place. This shift encouraged resorts to move beyond generic international menus and engage more thoughtfully with Maldivian ingredients, flavours, and culinary techniques.

Today, Maldivian-inspired cuisine is often presented through a modern lens. Local ingredients such as coconut, seafood, and regional spices are incorporated with greater confidence, balanced by international techniques and refined presentation. Rather than themed evenings, many resorts now position Maldivian flavours as part of a broader, contemporary dining narrative.

The physical environment has also become central to the dining experience. Surrounded by ocean and open skies, resorts increasingly design restaurants as vantage points, whether overwater, beachfront, elevated, or immersed in nature. In the Maldives, setting is not an accessory to dining, but a defining element of it.

Sustainability has further influenced this evolution. Resorts are responding to operational and environmental realities by investing in kitchen gardens, reducing food waste, and sourcing more responsibly where possible. These initiatives aim to improve freshness, manage costs, and align dining operations with broader sustainability goals in a country heavily dependent on imports.

Collectively, these shifts reflect a more mature approach to resort dining in the Maldives. What was once a supporting service has become a strategic component of the guest experience, contributing directly to destination appeal, brand differentiation, and long-term value for the industry.

Wellness and Island Living at Sandies Bathala Maldives

For travellers seeking a Maldivian escape that balances relaxation, simplicity, and authentic island charm, Sandies Bathala Maldives offers a refreshingly unpretentious approach to wellbeing. Set on a small private island in North Ari Atoll and surrounded by one of the region’s most vibrant house reefs, the resort’s spa and wellness offering is designed not as a separate indulgence, but as a natural extension of island life.

Here, wellness unfolds gently, between snorkelling sessions, sunwarmed afternoons, and evenings spent watching the horizon fade to gold.

An Island Spa Rooted in Calm

The soul of the resort’s wellness retreat can be found at MVUA Spa, a peaceful sanctuary tucked into the island’s lush greenery.

The spa features both indoor treatment rooms and an open-air massage area overlooking the sea, allowing guests to choose between cool, quiet comfort or the soothing rhythm of ocean breezes and distant waves.

The atmosphere is intentionally relaxed, never formal. Treatments can be booked easily during your stay, making it effortless to weave moments of self-care into your island routine.

Treatments Inspired by Travel and Tradition

The spa menu draws inspiration from African, Asian, and European wellness traditions, blending timehonoured techniques with natural products to create treatments that are deeply restorative without being overly elaborate. Whether you opt for a full-body massage, a revitalising scrub, or a soothing facial, each experience is designed to ease travel fatigue, calm sunwarmed muscles, and encourage complete relaxation.

After long flights, energetic dives, or hours spent exploring the reef, these treatments provide a welcome pause, helping travellers reconnect with the slower pace that defines life on Bathala Island.

Wellness Beyond the Treatment Room

Wellness at Sandies Bathala is not confined to the spa. For many travellers, the island itself becomes part of the experience. Days begin with barefoot walks along the shoreline, followed by snorkelling adventures just steps from the beach, where colourful coral gardens and marine life replace the noise and urgency of everyday life.

The resort’s all-inclusive concept supports this sense of ease, allowing guests to enjoy meals, refreshments, and activities without constant decision-making. It’s a style of travel that encourages presence, where your only real obligation is deciding when to swim, rest, or book that afternoon massage.

Designed for Easy, Meaningful Escapes

Sandies Bathala appeals to travellers who value authenticity over extravagance. The spa embodies this philosophy, simple, thoughtful, and connected to its environment. Whether solo, as a couple, or an active explorer, wellness unfolds naturally, day by day, in lighter mornings, deeper sleep, and a slower heartbeat. In a world where wellness is often a to-do list, Sandies Bathala Maldives offers something rare, the effortless invitation to slow down, reset, and leave feeling lighter, inside and out.

This shift transforms the family business from a respected B2B resort operator into a globally recognised, consumer-focused hospitality brand, positioning it for future international growth.

Ahmed Umar Maniku, Managing Director of Universal Enterprises, reflects on the company’s five-decade journey, which began with the opening of Kurumba, the Maldives’ first resort, in 1972. This vision led to the creation of iconic resorts like Baros, Kuramathi, and Huvafen Fushi. As the travel landscape evolves, Maniku sees VERSA not just as a new name but as a strategic repositioning to unlock the full potential of their resort portfolio and drive future growth.

This announcement coincides with the appointment of Visha Mahir, a second-generation member of the founding family, as CEO of VERSA Hospitality. With two decades of senior leadership at Universal Enterprises, most recently as COO of Universal Resorts, Visha views this new role as a privilege. She believes the company’s strength lies in its authentic connection to the Maldives and is committed to preserving this heritage while expanding VERSA and delivering exceptional service.

NIVA: the Cornerstone of VERSA’s New Growth Strategy

The creation of NIVA is central to the group’s transformation, positioning the new lifestyle brand as the key driver for growth and market relevance. Derived from “nourish” and “viva,” NIVA represents a new era of travel where emotional fulfilment takes precedence over status, catering to a generation seeking authentic, unforced experiences. NIVA will unite six of Universal’s Indian Ocean properties, including the iconic Kurumba in the Maldives and new destinations in the Seychelles, under a single philosophy: bringing lightness back to travel by creating spaces for unplanned, unforgettable moments. Visha Mahir sees the launch of NIVA as a pivotal step in scaling the company’s unique vision into new markets, ensuring that guests experience consistent, warm, and authentic service wherever they go.

The VERSA Portfolio and Vision

VERSA Hospitality is at the helm of the new structure, guiding the group’s direction and ambitions. The name, drawn from the word Universal, symbolises evolution: the ability to reveal new dimensions of destinations and chart a new course with a sense of timeless quality, while remaining firmly rooted in the company’s rich heritage.

The VERSA portfolio will be defined by two distinct yet complementary divisions: NIVA, a lifestyle-led hospitality brand, and a collection of iconic standalone destinations.

NIVA Hotels & Resorts

A new lifestyle-led brand, focused on giving guests cohesive, effortless and authentic experiences, will start with a portfolio of six resorts in the Maldives and Seychelles:

• Niva Kurumba (Maldives)

• Niva Velassaru (Maldives)

• Niva Kuramathi (Maldives)

• Niva Dhigali (Maldives)

• Niva Labriz (Seychelles)

• Niva Aria (Seychelles) – opening in 2026

THE VERSA COLLECTION – Unique and Independent Properties

This is a collection of distinct and acclaimed standalone destinations that Versa continues to curate, celebrating their individual characters and histories. The collection includes iconic Maldives resorts such as Baros, Milaidhoo, Huvafen Fushi and Kandolhu, and over time will expand to include more properties worldwide.
