CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Some of the brightest, most independent women often seem hesitant to work with a financial advisor because they don’t know where to start

Opening Session 8:30 - 8:50am

or what to expect. Hear Sindy speak to you about why this step is so important. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

EXPERT ADVICE... 1. LOOK FOR MORE THAN INVESTMENT ADVICE

People often confuse investment advice with financial advice. A financial advisor will take a broader look across every aspect of your financial life.

2. KNOW WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

After helping you develop a comprehensive plan to reach your goals, a great financial advisor will meet with you regularly to make sure you’re on track and will help adjust your plan as your priorities change.

3. DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Playing offense is being in the frontlines and taking actions to improve the business. Once you know what to look for, ask trusted friends, family members or colleagues for recommendations; then schedule a meeting. Be wary of anyone who attempts to sell you a financial product in a first meeting. You want a financial advisor who is more interested in getting to know you than he or she is in selling you something.

4. INSIST ON QUALITY

Make sure your financial advisor has the proper credentials and learn about the company he or she represents, too. Your financial plan (and advisor) should be with you for life, so you want to make sure he or she is supported by a firm with a strong history and excellent financial strength.

Sindy Canizales Walters

5. IT’S A PARTNERSHIP

As you consider making large purchases or other important financial decisions, talk with your advisor. You’ll feel better about your choices if you know that the decisions you make won’t put your financial goals at risk.

6. SET ASIDE THE TIME

In business, as in sports, there is a difference between game day and practice time. It’s not a matter of not understanding financial concepts, but taking the time to map out a plan that seems to fall to the bottom of the list. It’s important to remember, when you take the time now to take care of yourself, you are actually helping those you care about, too.

Sindy Canizales Walters is a Northwestern Mutual Financial Advisor with a passion to help others achieve personal and financial success. As an immigrant by way of Colombia and Venezuela, Sindy learned valuable business lessons from her entrepreneurial parents. Her mother was a trailblazer in Colombia as a wholesaler in the male-dominated automotive industry. Sindy followed her pioneering example in financial services. Her fervor for her career only grew as she saw the positive impact she was having on others’ lives. With the encouragement and mentorship of her leaders, Sindy cultivated a strong business, a 25-person multicultural financial representative team, and has earned many professional accolades. She and her team also pay it forward as supporters of charitable organizations like Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Nemours Children’s Hospital, The Colombo-American Medical Association and Prospera.

EMPATHY & CREATIVITY: Feminine Business Superpowers by Danya Shea, CEO & Founder of Fervr and Chief Activator at UCF’s Blackstone LaunchPad Let’s begin on the same page: while I reference females in general, I’m by no means excluding our essential male counterparts. There are masculine and feminine traits we all carry. We need both. Use this article to spur your attention toward your feminine traits of empathy and creativity, without limiting these business superpowers just to females. Verbosity is the killer of effective communication (I lose points for using the word ‘verbosity’), so I’m intentionally over-simplifying the gender conversation going forward. Good? Good. One of the most exciting and rewarding parts of working with other women in business is validating their superpowers of empathy and creativity to drive crisp, green business growth. I’m talking the bottom line. We’re no longer relegating these soft skills to support team roles. They’re coming front and center with CEOs, COOs, CFOs and with the shrewdest of board members. Forward-thinking founders and leaders know what traits power the engine of the new economy. Moving from an economy based on competition, secrecy and greed we now find ourselves post-2008 in an economy racing toward the prioritization of collaboration, transparency and impact. As women in business, what is our position in this new economy? Do we have yet more to catch up on; more to educate ourselves on; more to fight for equality and representation in? I’ll suggest to you it’s precisely the opposite: There has never been a better time to capitalize on intrinsic feminine superpowers for marketplace success than now. Specifically, I see proof that empathy and creativity are traits/skills/values surging forward and gaining recognition, acclaim and demand from both consumers and employers. The question then shifts from “Is it OK (or useful/advantageous/profitable) to have empathy and creativity in business?” to “What are the systematic ways to apply my superpowers of empathy and creativity in a for-profit organization?” Once we embrace the art of empathy and creativity in driving profitability, we can address the science of scaling, replicating and systematizing it. If we can’t teach it, we don’t understand it, right? Recently I began studying how the human brain uses models to prioritize and sort incoming data. Models are essential to life: Everything from basic survival instincts to the luxury of reasoning and critical thinking. If we aren’t taught a model, or don’t intentionally select one, our brains will make one for us because it is intolerable for the brain to operate without models. Makes me want to seek out and evaluate the models I’m operating off of in all areas of life… …But back to the business world. What model do you apply for creating value for a customer base? What model do you use to understand your market and the exponential changes of the Digital Age? How are you systematically applying your feminine superpowers of empathy and creativity to grow your company’s bottom line? We’re in the greatest time of American history to explore these themes together and aggregate our collective intelligence to build modern models that work. I can’t wait to see you at the Orlando Women’s Conference April 7th to explore further! To connect with Shea about these ideas, email shea@fervrco.com or join the MOXXIE Facebook Group at facebook.com/groups/moxxie.
