Allan is a professional percussionist and timpanist with more than 39 years experience working in the Opera Australia Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. He was a lecturer at the University of NSW for over 10 years teaching percussion techniques to trainee teachers. He has been a clinician for Education Conventions and has also performed with MSO, SSO and on many Film scores, Games soundtracks & TV shows. Carolyn has been a lecturer in Harmony, Aural and Performance Practices, a woodwind examiner for the AMEB and a popular adjudicator. BARRED INSTRUMENTS GAME

1. Set up a Glockenspiel, Xylophone or Metallophone so that the class can’t see the player and the instrument.

2. Play a series of pitches using sol-mi that the class can echo on their own instrument.

Level 1 (10 patterns): GGE, GEE, GEG, GE, GGG, EEE, EGG, EGE, EEG, EG

3. Each student must correctly play back the pattern one by one. Again, begin with just the G and E bars.

4. If the student plays all correctly, add the A bar for the sol-mi-la round.

The student gets credit for the number of correct patterns.

Level 2: Add “A” – AGE, AAG, AAE, AEG, AAA, GAE, GGA, GEA, GAG, GAA

Other considerations:

* You can give hints about the starting notes when the groupings change.

* Instead of beginning with sol-mi, use other patterns such as mi-re-do, octave/fifths do, sol do

* Yes, the students who play later in the game have the advantage of learning from watching this first few players but that’s the beauty too in this learning process.

Give the first 3 players a second chance if they need it.

There are many different Wooden Bar options and there are now also numerous Synthetic Bar options. Honduras Rosewood is the premium wood used by the finest concert xylophone and Marimba manufacturers on the planet. It is the most resonant bar terial with a lovely bright, yet warm tone. It is also very hard and is the most durable- less likely to dent and less likely to move in pitch compared to other woods. Honduras rosewood is a plantation timber carefully managed and now at a premium price point. It is used by Studio 49 on their series 2000 instruments and also in the Sonor Meisterklass wood bar models. Pau Rosa (sometimes called African rosewood) is the wood most commonly found on most classroom Xylophones and on many Concert Xylophones. It is a very good quality wood with excellent tone and a high degree of hardness for good durability and is used on all Optimum Xylophones and Marimbas. It is also used on all of the Sonor Primary line instruments. Padouk is a reddish coloured wood that is the choice by most manufacturers of concert marimbas as their step below Honduras rosewood. It is a warm sounding resonant timber. Suzuki use this timber for their bars. Pau Rosa and Padouk are both well managed plantation timbers.

With all bar materials, the selection and tuning process is critical. If the harmonics of the bars are not in tune with the fundamental pitches, the bar will be out of tune with itself and sound a little sour particularly in the lower registers. Accurate harmonic tuning is the great skill in bar tuning. All the major brands including Optimum are carefully harmonically tuned. This makes the instruments not only sound more in tune but will increase resonance and volume when many instruments are playing together. With all wooden xylophones, we recommend getting them retuned occasionally. 10 years of playing in a classroom that regularly changes temperature will affect the tuning of any wooden bar in time. This is not a fault.. wood is a natural product and it will move over time.

Synthetic Bars

High quality synthetic bars are a little more resonant than timber and are very stable in pitch in all weather conditions and are almost impossible to break or dent. Not quite as warm and “woody” in tone but still with an excellent sound.

Studio 49 have Grillodur, Sonor have Palisono and we, Optimum, are very proud to now have Duratone bars as an option. All of these bars are very well researched and have an excellent tone quality and enjoyable resonance using combinations of Fibreglass and various resins. The Grillodur bars on the compact Studio 49 Series 1000 instruments are a particularly excellent combination. These companies all know how to tune bars well (this is a very difficult skill to master and has to be done by experts by hand) and all parts are available for the long term maintenance of these instruments- so critical in a school. There are some cheaper fibreglass bars out there that do not sound good and have glassy overly resonant unattractive tones- beware not recommended. We hope this information helps you understand a little more about your precious Orff Xylophones.

Encourage smooth, flowing vocal delivery, Last 8 bars → stronger, more energetic words = Use forte (loud) dynamic. Encourage bold, rhythmic vocal delivery This contrast helps students understand expressive elements in music.

4. Final bar could be an “All Play” - Everyone plays their instrument together

The blocks are colour coded so when you say the colour, you say the rhythm. Note Knacks fit into three time signature frames. Use Note Knacks to show how two minims equal the length of a semibreve, how two crotchets equal the length of a minim and so on.

Xyloba is a creative marble run for building and composing at the same time. Xyloba develops motor function and spatial imagination and also facilitates a creative approach to music. It is available in sets the produce specific tunes, in small and large general packages and as separate parts. The simple interlocking Xyloba system allows an almost unlimited number of variations.
