Carlo Zucchetto channels generations of winemaking precision into Proseccos that rise far above the ordinary, from bone-dry Puro-Fol to the elegant, hillside-grown Cartizze.

Azienda Agricola Paolo Zucchetto

VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO

Everyone, once in their lifetime, should try a DOCG Prosecco. Carlo Zucchetto’s examples are first rate and really blow the humdrum supermarket fodder from the plains out the water. It helps that he has a rather scientific mind. His grandfather

was a local pharmacist who later went into winemaking and much of the same rigour is evident in Carlo’s exacting approach. The clear differences between each of the Cuvées underscore this rigour. Puro-Fol (Lot 5708, p3), sourced from a single village, is almost bone-dry and delivers a particularly linear performance. Then there is the Extra Dry (Lot 5706) with a touch more residual sugar and the kind of textbook generosity on the palate that gives this DOCG its reputation. Pride of place, though, must go to his Cartizze (Lot 5709, back cover), a streamlined, graceful masterpiece from a tiny handerchiefsized vineyard on vertiginous slopes. Prosecco is both overrated and over here but Carlo's wines swim against the pedestrian tide and his family's long history give him an edge on how to make the very best.

ZUCCHETTO BACCARAT, EXTRA BRUT, ROSATO PROSECCO, DOC TREVISO, PAOLO ZUCCHETTO, 2025

Glera, Pinot Nero

Although much maligned, the rosé Prosecco category allows producers to experiment with small additions of Pinot Noir to add weight and complexity to the blend. This has a fine mousse and is gorgeously drinkable. Cherry, strawberry, red currant and raspberry flavours are complemented by boisterous acidity and perfect length. Drink it young and feel the energy. 2026-2028 – mp

ZUCCHETTO VALDOBBIADENE, EXTRA DRY, PROSECCO SUPERIORE, DOCG, PAOLO ZUCCHETTO, 2025

Glera

Valdobbiadene is at the heart of the Prosecco wine region and the hillside vineyards around the town are generally recognised as producing the best wines. Perfectly balanced and highly refreshing, this has classic aromas of pear and orchard fruits, enhanced with an uplifting note of mint. 2026-2027–rb

ZUCCHETTO LIVÈI VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE DOCG (COL FONDO), 2023

Cloudy, pale lemon hue. Refreshing example of the Col Fondo style, with sharp acidity and beautiful yeasty notes of toast and brioche. There is plenty of fruit to drive the wine along – lemon juice, green apple, Key lime pie, gooseberry and quince, making for a food-friendly (and rather rare) example. 2026-2028 – mp

MASTERS OF WINE

Meet the Experts

Since 1973, Opimian has partnered with Masters of Wine to select outstanding wines for Canadians. This Cellar, we’re thrilled to welcome Richard Bampfield MW, who joins Michael Palij MW—two trusted experts helping you discover even more exceptional wines. Meet Richard.

1. What inspired you to pursue the Master of Wine title?

At the time, I was writing a book and I thought that it would be more popular if the author was an MW. As it happened, I never got very far with the book but I continued my studies because I could see how the title would help advance my career.

2. What excites you most about the current wine world?

The momentum getting behind regenerative viticulture, the increasingly exciting wines being produced by countries like the UK, Belgium, Sweden and other countries that historically struggled to ripen grapes sufficiently. Discovering lesser known wines and grapes from countries like Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine.

3. Is there a region or grape variety you’re especially passionate about?

I find all the wine world fascinating, there are always innovators and pioneers. I do have a particular soft spot for English sparkling wine and Madeira.

4. Any tips for choosing wines for cellaring vs. drinking now?

Most wines these days are made for drinking relatively young and, even if destined to age, still taste pretty good when young. If in doubt, drink it!

5. What’s a wine myth you'd love to debunk?

All the “do’s and don’t’s” in areas such as serving temperature, finding the perfect wine and food pairing, etc. We all have different tastes in food so it is ridiculous to assume we all have the same tastes in wine.

6. What’s your go-to food and wine pairing?

Ha, funny considering what I have just written above! In general I love high quality wine with simple food. Yesterday a top Provence rosé was perfect with a sausage roll.

7. Favourite indulgent meal or snack?

Fish and chips and Champagne.

8. What’s one wine in your cellar you’re saving for a special occasion? 18th century Madeira

9. Favourite film or TV series to relax with a glass of wine?

I’m easy to please, Bond movies normally go down well in our household.

10. What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I like ordering an ice bucket in a restaurant if I feel the red is being served too warm for my taste – mainly to see the reaction of the staff/sommelier.

Azienda Agricola Giovanna Tantini

VERONA

For those looking for a light, fruity red, it is hard to imagine a more ideal wine than Bardolino. From vineyards that pre-date Roman times, planted to the local grapes Corvina and Rondinella, there is a delightful authenticity about Giovanna Tantini’s examples, seamless in their subtlety and expressing much conviviality. They almost reflect the personality of Giovanna herself, although she is a definite extrovert! Don’t miss the Chiaretto!

GIOVANNA TANTINI BARDOLINO CHIARETTO DOC, 2024

Pale pink hue. Good rosé should bring a smile to your face, and this one plays the role perfectly. It offers stone fruit and apple flavours, seasoned with a hint of Provençal herbs. High-class Chiaretto, relatively dry, and with sufficient depth of flavour to ensure it will be most enjoyable with food as well as on its own. 2026-2027– rb

Pale red hue. Beguiling nose that summarises everything Bardolino should be. Crunchy red fruit aromas of red currant, cranberry, pomegranate, red cherry and plum. How’s that for complexity? Although unexpectedly tannic on the palate for a Bardolino, the length and clarity of flavour create a light red of exception. A class apart. 2026-2028 –mp

IL GRUCCIONE LUGANA DOC NUNZIO GHIRALDI, 2024

Turbiana

Pale lemon hue. Lugana has become one of the most fashionable dry whites in Italy, surely benefitting from the influx of tourists to neighbouring Lake Garda. Quintessentially Italian in that this is refined dry white, perfectly balanced and with subtle notes of citrus, honey and herbs. Puckering and moreish, it will make for easy drinking with, or without, food. 2026-2027–rb

AZIENDA AGRICOLA NUNZIO GHIRALDI

LUGANA

It was Nunzio’s grandfather who both bought Podere Sant’Onorata in 1953 and inspired Nunzio’s desire to make wine. Originally, he sold his grapes to another top producer but, happily for us, he now makes the wine himself. Does the beauty of the site, close to Lake Garda and overlooked by stunning mountains, help define the wine? Who knows, but it is certainly true that Nunzio makes one of the most refined expressions of this popular white.

WINES FROM CAMPANIA AND SARDINIA

Cantina Dorgali SARDINIA

One-third of the population of Sardinia live in either Cagliari, in the south, or in Sassari, in the north. What does this leave in-between? In the main, Sardinia is a rugged wilderness and when one drives into Dorgali one descends into a languid way of life where the giornali and passeggiata are daily essentials. Dreamy it most certainly is but do not be fooled, however, as winemaking here is a serious business. One of the island’s largest producers, Dorgali is a cooperative that gives smallholders the opportunity to make the most of ancient grapes and vineyards. They are expert at the quotidian and craft Cannonau that has both freshness and nuance at an affordable price. Their Vermentino, which is Sardinia’s signature white varietal, makes for the perfect introduction to island life.

Pale lemon hue. Fresh, carefree nose of candied pear, granny smith, lime juice, and yellow plum. The light-bodied palate has a slightly oily nature and calls to mind hot days and grilled fish. Both acidity and alcohol are neatly integrated, allowing the subtle flavours of lemon zest, yellow apple, sage and bay to take centre stage. This is an easy-going style that requires little effort to appreciate and finishes dry, delicate and harmonious. One for the deckchair. 2026-2027– mp

Medium ruby hue. Skilfully perfumed, this shows layers of lavender, red currant, white pepper, Bing cherry and wild strawberry, all allied to gentle acidity and soft tannins. Affordable and gluggable in the extreme, there is much to like in this humble expression of Cannonau (Grenache). 2026-2028 –mp

Medium ruby hue. Given this is almost a decade old, it is still very much on its feet. Primary, secondary and tertiary aromas combine in a robust bouquet of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, vanilla, incense, tobacco, violets, forest floor and undergrowth. There are fine tannins and a treasure trove of fruit on the palate, which oozes hearty flavours of coffee, chocolate, cooked black plum and cherry, then floral waves of lavender and peonies, followed by spicy cedar and clove. 2026-2028 – mp

As delightfully quaffable a summer red as anyone could want! 2026-2028 – mp

Azienda Agricola Cortese

VITTORIA

The only DOCG in Sicily? This is not to be found on Etna (cue gasps of astonishment) but far to the south near the unremarkable town of Vittoria, spread liberally across three provinces in Caltanissetta, Catania and Ragusa. Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG saw the green light in 2005, marking an upgrade to the previous DOC and reflecting the growing quality of the wines produced there. The ying and yang of wispy, slimline Frappato and generous Nero d’Avola invariably proves a hit and can make for surprising longevity. Cortese owner Stefano Girelli is originally a Trento native but has fallen madly in love with the Mediterranean way of life. He takes a keen interest in traditional practices, fermenting his Frappato in amphorae and Nero d’Avola in open top fermenters. Sicily can be resolutely obdurate in many things but here it seems that the boiling cauldron of Mediterranean creativity has been given a new lease of life.

$ 35 $ 210

This mixed case features two fresh and expressive Sicilian whites made

from native grapes—Catarratto and Carricante. One is light and fruitdriven, while the other is earthier and more structured, making it a natural match for food. Both come from Cortese, the organic estate of Stefano and Marina Girelli, who have championed biodiversity and chemical-free farming in Sicily since 2016. These wines showcase the island’s character, including the especially floral Lucido clone of Carricante.

Bright lemon hue. Some Sicilian whites can have something of an oily texture, but this one, made from the highly rated Carricante grape, is characterised by impressive freshness and purity of fruit –perhaps to be expected from organically grown grapes. Bright aromas of stone fruit, honey and citrus lead to a crisp, dry, appetising palate with good lift on the finish. 2026-2027– rb

5715

Pinot Grigio

Pale lemon hue. Pinot Grigio is not always the most showy or expressive of grapes, but, in the sunny climes of Sicily, it achieves an extra level of ripeness, producing wines with a bit of body and rounded mouthfeel. With aromas of ripe citrus fruit and stewed apple, this is a successful and highly versatile dry white, happy in its own company or at the table. 2026-2027– rb

Deep purple hue. Juicy, satisfying example of Montepulciano that opens with a delightful nose of violets and fresh blackberries. The palate is a winner, its lowish acidity and smooth, crowdpleasing style aided by a hefty dose of bright blueberries. Not too dry on the finish, which is complemented by some charming florals. 2026-2027–rb

Pale purple hue. Enjoying lofty DOCG status, Dogliani is the region that produces the best Dolcetto, and this one is more than worthy of the name. This grips the drinker's attention with its depth of fruit, crisp acidity and a gentle reminder of the grape's natural tannin. Vividly fruity, with bold blueberry and blackberry. 2026-2028 – rb

Cabutto

TENUTA LA VOLTA

The Cabutto family have been making wine in the Langhe hills for nearly a century, with their estate, Tenuta La Volta, nestled in the prestigious Barolo subregion of Castiglione Falletto. This limestone-rich area is known for producing hightoned, long-lived Nebbiolo, and the Cabuttos honour tradition by ageing their wines in large Slavonian oak barrels to preserve purity and terroir.

Barolo may appear pale in the glass, but its delicate colour belies a powerful wine. Made exclusively from Nebbiolo, it offers an intense, structured experience, with firm tannins, bright acidity, and an evolving bouquet of tar, roses, dried fruit, orange peel, and earth. Tenuta La Volta captures all the hallmarks of great Barolo in a masterful blend of some of Piemonte’s finest crus.

Deep garnet hue. This note is taking longer to write than usual, not least because I cannot resist returning to the glass to pick up yet more layers and flavours. This is Barolo at full volume, still relatively young and a wine that I suspect will get even better with time. It is already complex, boasting intense aromas of cranberry, baked red fruit, tar, walnut and cedar – with the strong supporting cast of Nebbiolo's signature acidity and tannin. If you can, buy more than one case so that you can appreciate this wine as it evolves over the coming decade or two. 2026-2035 –rb

CANTINA CLAVESANA

CUNEO

Though a cooperative might, at first glance, appear a budget alternative to the polished world of heraldry and crests, this would downplay the coop’s importance in the development of many Italian wine regions post WW2. The province of Cuneo, recovering from the twin bashings of war and an exodus of workers, surely landed on its feet with the establishment of Clavesana in 1959. The team here breathed new life into Dolcetto with their rallying cry, ‘Siamo Dolcetto’ or ‘We are Dolcetto’. Clavesana is still going strong with two-hundred members and a management team determined to bring highquality Dolcetto to a wider audience (See lot 5715 Mito Dogliani DOCG, p16). Very often, a cooperative offers more than the sum of its parts.

TREISO

This has got to be a first. The founder of Vigin, Orlando Viglino,

was a teetotaller! Blind tasting probably was not his forte, although blind faith may have been. The company ‘only’ started making proprietary wine in 2002, under the watchful eye of his grandson, Davide (who does, and it will come with reassurance, drink wine). Davide is based in Treiso in the heart of Barbaresco and these wines retain a traditional feel despite his grandfather’s reluctance to partake.

Medium purple hue. As old-school as you get! Austere notes of stewed tea, black cherry, black pepper and blackcurrant wrapped in a healthy dose of oaky coffee and char. Decent length, too, with acidity for heroes. Where has the last half-century gone? 2026-2028 –mp

VIGIN BARBARESCO CASE3 BOTTLES EACH: COTTÀ AND MONTERSINO

$ 90 $ 540

There are sixty-five crus in Barbaresco. Here are two to start off . . . Cottà is situated on the western edge of Neive, near the top of the horse’s neck (Barbaresco resembles a horse’s head

in profile, lowered as if grazing). Abutting Barbaresco, and with Treiso to its southwest, Cottà ranks among Neive’s standout crus, producing structured, powerful wines. Soils are sandy, with pockets of limestone and clay. Montersino, south of Treiso, is at the top of the horse’s long face. It intersects the communes of both Treiso and the lesser-known San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, which follows the course of a stream to Barbaresco’s southern tip. Its wines are floral, delicate, and reminiscent of Barolo’s La Morra.

Producers have long disproved any notion that Barbaresco is the poor cousin of Barolo – and this is top class wine by any standards. It boasts sweetness of fruit (not always a given with Nebbiolo) that is perfectly balanced by the acidity and tannin that are the hallmarks of this unique grape. Textbook flavours of baked red fruits, sweet spice and walnut. A lovely example that will no doubt evolve excitingly after more time in bottle. 2026-2030 – rb

Medium garnet hue. Proper tar and roses nose, leading to a muscular palate heavy on flavour and tannin. There is baked plum, clafoutis, and no apology for the alcohol, either, in this crowd-pleasing, sweet fruited style that delivers on the vintage hype. 2026-2028 – mp

In a world where the small and artisanal are often more highly prized, it is easy to overlook the valuable work of co-operatives – the winemaking facilities that source their grapes from the hundreds of family grapegrowers and vineyards. In fact, Noi Vignaioli Piemontesi, by uniting the production of many co-operatives and smaller growers, is responsible for almost of a third of Piemonte’s wine ouput – producing exemplary local wines at attractive prices.

Barbera, other authorized Piedmontese red grapes

There are some grapes that are naturally suited to producing fresh, juicy, appetising reds – and Barbera is one of the best. With characteristically bracing freshness, this purple-hued example bursts with plum and cherry fruit, making it the perfect pairing for fatty meats or creamy sauces – not to mention creamy cheeses. 2026-2028 –rb

Medium ruby hue. Spellbinding nose with notes of ripe black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, coffee, coconut, black pepper and dark chocolate. PIEMONTE

Cascina Cà Gialla

FOUNDERS CHOICE PRODUCER FOR THIS CELLAR

It is easy to forget that, prior to Elio Altare’s fabled “chainsaw to the botti” moment of ersatz outrage in the late 1980s (directed as much at his hard-working parents as at anyone), Piemonte was something of viticultural curio. The red wines were not particularly hip and not particularly Nebbiolo: Barbera was the workhorse grape and Dolcetto was the aristocratic cousin. Obviously Nebbiolo was widely planted but largely out of a

sense of duty rather than from innate pride in the world’s palest and most aggressive red variety by some chalk.

Perhaps Marco Porello has been in the right place at the right time for three generations but – if he has – it’s by accident rather than by design; he is hardly one for fashions on the wax. His expertise is in understatement and he has at his disposal the finest vineyards of both Canale and the village of Vezza d’Alba. Underappreciated Barbera gets a makeover, coming up lithe and silky, while his Roero is the kind of chiselled Nebbiolo that Barolo will never master. Arneis, once a sideshow to greater things, is here in all its aromatic glory. This is the beauty of greater Piemonte.

5719

Nebbiolo 5720

In the dictionary under ‘Nebbiolo’ there is a glass of this. Textbook stuff with a pale garnet hue, pronounced aromatics with notes of red and black cherry, incense, hay and sweet spice. This is an utterly gorgeous 'entry level' Nebbiolo replete with plenty of tannins, alcohol and acidity, plus vibrant notes of hay, red currant, black cherry and plum. The finish powers home with more conviction than a wine of this price has any right to command. If you like Nebbiolo, you ought to buy this. 2026-2028 – mp

Marco Porello is the king of subtlety, and he has absolutely hit the jackpot with this fine-tuned Arneis. Youthful pale lemon with acacia and lychee on the nose followed by salted almonds, whiteflesh nectarine, yellow peach, Mirabelle, apricot, and candied fruit. The palate is surprisingly rich given the refreshing acidity and there is quince, Granny Smith, passion fruit, lime zest and hawthorn. This is exceptionally classy and complete. Ideal with risotto or shellfish. 2026-2028 – mp

Medium purple. Fascinating nose of black cherry, pipe tobacco, cooked meat, cooked plum, blackberry and mulberry. Clean, poised, ripe and very long, this showcases the best of Barbera’s simple, linear and ever-so-satisfying aromatics. Just as expressive on the palate with crushed blackberry, violets, elderberry, tinned strawberry and dark chocolate. The finish shows liquorice and coffee with stand-out acidity and gentle tannins. An exceptionally complete Barbera and stonking value. 2026-2028 –mp

Fattoria Nicodemi NOTARESCO

It is impossible not to be impressed by the Nicodemi family, with brother and sister Alessandro and Elena currently in charge: their beautiful, solarpowered winery overlooks a stunning lake and their textbook wines are made entirely from their own, organically-grown grapes. Not surprisingly, such excellence has caught the eye of wine importers around the world, and 80% of the production is now exported. Their wines are not to be confused with Vino Nobile de Montepulciano (made from Sangiovese in Tuscany); this Montepulciano is a grape which thrives in the exceptional Colline Teramane DOCG vineyards of Abruzzo, close to Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Deep ruby hue. Complex and brooding with very ripe (yet not jammy) black fruit, including plum and blackcurrant accented with bay and eucalyptus. Oak adds coconut and baking spice. How this manages to find another gear, I do not know.

The previous wine is all one could ever want in Montepulciano and yet this pulls off a coup with its oak and concentration. 2026-2028 – rb

ALTO ADIGE

Alto Adige has quietly risen into the Seria A of wine regions while you were busy debating the merits of Tuscany and Piemonte. When this part of the world was part of Austria, it was considered positively tropical despite the Alpine peaks on all sides. Flat land is at a great premium for housing, factories and orchards and vineyards are, therefore, relegated to the steepest (and best) bits of the valley sides. With desperately cold nights and scorching days, Alto Adige delivers crisp, aromatic whites and elegant reds with sublime concentration and longevity. Tourism is huge and cellar door sales are brisk, ensuring a ready, local market.

5753 GRAF MERANERSCHICKENBURG AND LAGREIN CASE - 3 BOTTLES EACH:

Meraner (or Südtirol Meraner Hügel) is produced around the town of Merano under the Alto Adige/Südtirol DOC. It is made entirely from Schiava, or Vernatsch as the locals call it, the mountain red known for its vivid, ruby colour and brooding, herbal aromatics. Lagrein is the region’s other claim to fame. Somewhat more structured but with an affinity for oak and claims to immortality, it deserves much, much wider appreciation.

Schiava

Medium ruby hue. This wraps a gentle oak blanket around the fruit with soft overtones of cinnamon, clove and baking spice. The red fruit hallmark of Schiava is still there in red currant, Methley plum and cherry, and there are further, intriguing hints of forest floor, oregano and thyme. Tannins are reasonably firm, and the finish is long and lively. 2026-2028 –mp

CANADA

Niagara

MELDVILLE

Famous for its eponymous falls, a string of drab casinos and even worse hotels, Niagara Falls should never be confused with Niagaraon-the-Lake, the postcard village on the south shore of Lake Ontario and the centre of Canada’s soft fruit industry. Peaches, cherries and vines all compete for the benign climate on the alluvial soils between the Niagara escarpment and the lake. Although grapes have been grown here for more

than a century, one would be forgiven for asking which grapes as Crackling Rose and Baby Duck also look to this region for inspiration.

Old habits die hard and the generous yields and frost resistance of non-Vinifera proved too tempting for many. Noble varietals, and particularly those suited to soil and climate, are on the rise after decades of pretty lack-lustre bottlings.
