Argentina and Chile

Chile produces some of the best-value wines in the world, with Cornellana and Echeverría offering fantastic wines at fantastic prices. Across the Andes, my trip to Argentina in February 2018 reminded me of the huge influence the Andes have on wine styles. This season, we introduce two producers in two new regions — Finca Ferrer in Gualtallary and Bodega Los Toneles in Pedernal Valley.

Malbec remains a specialty of Argentina and for good reason. In this Cellar Offering, you will find no fewer than seven Malbecs, reflecting the breadth of styles produced.

Gualtallary, Tupungato Finca Ferrer ARGENTINA

On my trip to Argentina in 2018, Gualtallary (pronounced “gual tah jah ree”), a sub-region of the Uco Valley, stood out for the quality of its wines. Based at the southern end of the valley, it is one of the newest areas for vine growing, within the shadow of the Tupangato and Tupungatito volcanoes. It reaches up to 1,700 metres and has the greatest concentration of limestone in the soils. Finca Ferrer, located at 1,300 meters above sea level, is strongly influenced by the Andes. The estate, established by José Ferrer Sala in 2003, enjoys bright blue skies: more than 300 sunny days a year, chilly nights and just 14 centimetres of rain a year. Finca Ferrer winemaker Daniel Ekkert produces elegant and flavoursome wines.

FINCA FERRER,

1681

Intense and hugely concentrated, I just love this wine. Developing nicely, is has a mellow bouquet with cooked fruits, patisserie and some mint with savoury oak notes in the background. In the mouth, it is concentrated with lots of oak and savoury fruit. It has a grainy texture with dark fruits, spice and lasting bitter cherries on the finish. 80% of the wine was matured using oak staves, and the balance spent 11 months in French oak barrels.

Plums and mulberries with savoury spices and oak aromas are all present. This is a full-bodied wine which develops quite a grippy finish. It is concentrated with good depth and should certainly develop well with a little more bottle aging.

A complex wine with layers of flavour, great balance and depth. Malbec grapes came from one specifically selected plot — Block A6. Quantities produced are extremely limited. Sweet vanilla oak, sweet tobacco and dark fruits combine to create a mellow bouquet. The smooth palate reveals layers of spices and ripe black fruits, complemented by the fine texture. After fermentation and aging in tank, Colección 1310 Block A6 Malbec was matured in French oak barrels and larger casks for 15 months prior to bottling in June 2018.

ARGENTINA

San Juan Province Millan S.A.

Bodega Los Toneles

San Juan Province, the second largest wine producing province in Argentina after Mendoza, has a long history of grape growing for both eating and wine production. However, Pedernal Valley in the south-west of is one of the province’s newest wine regions. Developed in the last 15 years, it is making a name for itself. Pedernal Valley is a highaltitude, self-contained valley, close to the border with Mendoza province, and is free from vine diseases. Today there are a total of 800 hectares of vines planted in Pedernal, with the Millan family farming 100 hectares. Vines are planted on complex flinty limestone soils, previously virgin land cleared and blasted. The dry and windy climate means drip irrigation is a must.

Malbec $ 32.00 $ 192.00

Aromatic with delightful floral, violets and red cherry fragrances, this is a medium to full bodied wine. A very concentrated and mellow wine, it’s perfectly balanced with the potential to develop. Malbec vines are cultivated on slopes at 1,450 metres. Grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete eggs, then the wine matured in used French oak barrels for eight months.

Indeed, the vintage is generally being hailed as one of the country’s best of the past ten years. Mauricio’s red wines are all concentrated and smooth, and I can’t wait to see how they develop over time.

CHILE

Paine Maipo Valley Antiyal

The Maipo Valley is renowned for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the closest wine region to Chile’s capital Santiago: Antiyal at Paine is a 40-minute drive directly south from the centre. This idyllic spot sees vineyards, wildflowers and olive trees growing alongside chickens and livestock, creating a natural and diverse haven for all kinds of life. Álvaro Espinoza is a leading light in biodynamic viticulture, as well as a celebrated winemaker. He and his wife Marina chose this spot to plant their first vineyard in 1996. The vineyards are all farmed biodynamically, using home made composts and treatments. The wines are vibrant in character, fine in texture and layered with flavours which reveal themselves in time.

Villard Fine Wines CHILE

Villard Fine Wines set up by Frenchman Thierry Villard was one of the first small family owned vineyards and boutique wine companies in Chile. Based in Casabanca Valley, the region has since become one of Chile’s most prestigious for growing grapes under cool climate conditions — the region is less than 25 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Thierry’s son Jean-Charles is now winemaker, having studied viticulture and oenology and lived and worked in many different wine regions of the world.

Despite a large proportion being fermented in oak barrels, the Grand Vin is not an overtly oaky wine. Instead, it has aromas of nectarines and passion fruit. It is soft and smooth on the palate with more stone fruits, slightly unripe nectarine and lemon flavours. It is well balanced with medium weight and a long elegant finish. Chardonnay was picked on March 23 and 24, 2018, whole bunch pressed and the juice left to settle. Nearly half the juice was fermented then matured in a combination of new to four-year-old barrels, the balance in a conical oak tank.

A concentrated Pinot Noir, subtle in character with youthful aromas of mulberries and red cherries. This has bright fruit and nice depth with a long cherry finish. Vines are planted around the winery, with grapes harvested by hand and a second sorting and selection on arrival at the winery. Grapes were left to cold soak for seven days, followed by fermentation at 24°C to 26°C with regular pump overs. Everything involved in the production of Tanagra is done by hand. Grapes are picked by hand, crushed by hand and placed directly by hand into barrel for the fermentation. This is an intense wine, with exuberant dark fruit aromas of crushed blackberries and blackcurrants complemented by raspberry yoghurt notes. After a seven-day cold soak, fermentation took place in barrels with skins remaining in contact with the juice for a total 30 days. It is supple, rich and smooth with vanilla and red fruit flavours leading to a savoury finish. It was matured for 17 months in a combination of 72% French oak and 28% American with 80% new.

Maule Valley Alquihue, San Javier Las Veletas

The Maule region, located 250 kilometres south of Santiago, is one of Chile’s oldest winegrowing regions. Vines were first planted there by the Spanish at the start of colonization. Old Carignan and País vines on the Piamonte estate have been painstakingly rejuvenated by Raul Dell’Oro and his team, and new vineyards have been planted. Partnering with winemaker Rafael Tirado, the pair produce the Las Veletas range from grapes grown in this dry Mediterranean climate cooled by chilly winds coming in from the Pacific Ocean in the evenings.

LAS VELETAS PETIT VERDOT CABERNET FRANC, VALLE DEL MAULE, 2018

Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc

País was once Chile’s most planted wine grape. Today that accolade goes to Cabernet Sauvignon. País was originally brought to America by Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century and spread throughout the continent — it is also known in Argentina as Criolla Grande and Mission in California. Recently there has been a surge in interest for old País vines in Maule. Las Veletas País is produced from vines planted in 1915 and revitalized by Raul Dell’Oro. The 2018 is translucent ruby in colour with aromas of freshly crushed redcurrants. This is a light bodied red with sour fruits and savoury flavours.

My favourite wine in the line up of Las Veletas, this is a blend of 55% Petit Verdot and 45% Cabernet Franc. It is a full-bodied wine with mellow forest fruits, lavender and mint flavours. Initially soft on the palate, it is structured with a grainy texture, layered flavours and a firm savoury finish. It was aged for 12 months in French oak. Not fully mature, it merits some cellaring prior to drinking.

Displaying nice developed aromas of truffles and undergrowth with a whiff of smoke, the 2016 Las Veletas Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc is soft and mellow on the palate. This is a medium bodied wine with a velvet texture and a bitter liquorice finish, perfectly reading for drinking. Vines are planted on granitic soils with red clay and slate at the highest points.

LAS VELETAS GRENACHE MOURVÈDRE CARIGNAN, VALLE DEL MAULE, 2018

Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan

$ 31.00 $ 186.00

This blend of 54% Grenache, 26% Carignan and 20% Mourvèdre has subdued, moody dark fruit aromas with a hint of coal in the background. It is supple with more damson and chocolate flavours emerging in the mouth and is medium bodied with soft tannins. A long and even growing season in 2018 with moderate temperatures and the odd shower resulted in a late harvest with grapes picked the last week of April. Matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, it should continue to develop nicely over some years.

The Echeverría family came from the Basque region of Spain to Chile in the 1750s. Roberto Echeverría Sr’s maternal grandfather settled at Molina, in the Curicó Valley, in the 1930s, and established vineyards. Roberto Echeverría Sr transformed the business in the 1990s, travelling the world with his wife Gloria selling their wines, bringing back ideas and putting Chile firmly on the world wine map. Today, their children — Roberto Jr, Paulina, Viviana and Diego — have taken up the baton.

Viña La Rosa

Cornellana Estate

1721

The Viña La Rosa estate has been in Ismael Ossa’s family for six generations. 680 hectares of vines are cultivated in the Peumo zone of the Cachapoal Valley, which is famed for the quality of Carmenère wines produced. The traditional Hacienda house is surrounded by vineyards and fruit orchards, but these are anything but traditional. The young and dynamic team employ the latest technology and knowhow in the vineyards and in the winery to make modern flavoursome wines.

Carmenère

$ 21.00 $ 252.00

Carmenère is winemaker Gonzalo‘s passion and Peumo is considered the best region to grow it. The valley generally doesn’t get any rain until late autumn, allowing the late ripening Carmenère grapes to reach full maturity without undue stress to the winemakers. The 2018 Reserve is deep in colour with dark smoky fruit aromas over a background of green leaves. It is medium bodied and supple with an herbal edge and a long finish.
