The event, hosted by the Opelika Chamber, featured plenty of food, games, activities and giveaways donated by local businesses, all free for first responders and their families as a way of saying thank you for their hard work and dedication to the community.

Saturday grilling competition to benefit United Way Opelika police and fire departments face off to see who has the best burger

PHOT0S CONTRIBUTED TO THE OBSERVER

Pictured at last year’s Burgers and Badges Grill-Off are members of Opelika’s Police Department, left, and Fire Department, right, who will again go head-to-head in a competition to see who can raise the most money for the United Way of Lee County by selling the most burgers. Support your favorite department for $5 to receive a burger, chips and drink, and don’t miss the hilarious Facebook exchange going on between the two departments leading up to the event, which is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Municipal Park in Opelika. There will be fun activities such as face painting, train rides on the Rocky Brook Rocket, snack vendors and more, including the best tasting burger competition, which will be judged by MasterChef Junior Bryson McGlynn, OHS head football coach Bryan Moore and Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller.
