At the center of SupplySide West is the expo hall, which will be open on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year over 1,200 exhibitors will showcase more than 10,000 ingredients and service solutions designed to support the product ideation process and go-to-market strategies. Across the conference, SupplySide West’s education programming offers numerous ways for businesses to hone their acumen. This year, sessions are organized into thematic blocks, allowing attendees to customize their experience based on the topics most relevant to their business. BASF is again the official education sponsor of SupplySide West. These sessions are organized into workshops, panel discussions and summits. Workshops are three hours each with industry experts presenting information that brands need to know on the topic at hand, while the two-hour panel discussions are designed to be more of a discussion with attendees; following speaker presentations, attendees have the opportunity to ask questions in a moderated Q&A. Plus, a full-day summit will focus on clean label; featured speaker Cara Welch, Ph.D., senior advisor to the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs at FDA, will discuss important regulatory issues—including the 2016 draft NDI (new dietary ingredient) guidance; and SupplySide Central will deliver shorter education sessions directly on the show floor. Beyond the main programming, educational opportunities include GMP (good manufacturing practice) training, produced by NSF International; a range of VendorBrief presentations from industry suppliers showcasing their new offerings; and supplier-presented Breakfast Briefs and Lunch Briefs designed to explore the science and market opportunities around key categories.

Safety and efficacy form the foundation for growth of the dietary supplement industry. With a firm foundation in place, innovation driven by science and strategy is able to fuel growth of the market. Covering the bases of safety, efficacy and innovation can be daunting for manufacturers and marketers of dietary supplements, but is absolutely essential to establish healthy brands and a healthy marketplace. Education at SupplySide West—where science and strategy intersect—covers the bases of contract labs and contract manufacturing, and also looks into key market segments such as personal care/beauty and probiotics, to keep brand owners on-track and propelling business forward in the supplement category.

Laboratory testing of ingredients and finished goods is top-of-mind in the natural products industry. In the Evaluating and Partnering with Contract Labs workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m., industry experts will address essential topics relating to testing methods of dietary supplements, including qualifying and selecting an appropriate laboratory partner, method validation, audits and supply chain integrity. The session is underwritten by Covance, Eurofins Scientific, Micro Quality Labs and MIDI Labs. A cornerstone of the dietary supplement industry, contract manufacturing and private labeling firms around the globe turn out products in myriad formats, ideally meeting quality standards and being produced to meet all regulatory requirements. For brand owners looking to utilize contract manufacturers or private label firms, ensuring partnership with the right company, confirming regulations are met and watching the supply chain will avoid putting one’s company and brand at risk. These topics and more will be discussed during the Contract Manufacturing: Raising the Bar on Delivering Quality workshop on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 8:30 a.m. It is underwritten by Bio-Energy Systems, National Enzyme Co. and Paragon Laboratories. Podcasts with more information on contract manufacturing are available from SupplySide West speakers Tara Lin Couch, Ph.D., senior advisor for dietary supplements, EAS Consulting Group; Heather Neves Duncan-Fairman, director corporate quality assurance and regulatory affaris, Natural Organics Inc./ Global Health Laboratories LLC; and Joy A. Joseph, chief operations officer, Joys Quality Management Systems. One hot area of innovation in the dietary supplement category is probiotics, which will be the focus of a three-hour workshop, Tapping the Growing Probiotics Supplement Market, on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 8:30 a.m. Developed in conjunction with the International Probiotics Association (IPA), speakers will tackle the opportunities and issues in the probiotics supplement space. Areas of conversation will include market insights on the U.S. probiotics supplement market, an update on how to navigate the regulatory issues, and tips for developing studies that will support product development. The session's underwriters include CHR Hansen, Global Health Industries, Lallemand Inc., Morinaga Nutritional Foods Inc., Nutraceutix and Stratum Nutrition. Beauty is another category on the frontlines of innovation, where evolving science is realizing the potential of novel natural ingredients to address concerns such as aging, skin vitality and other cosmetic needs. The Science & Innovation Driving the Beauty Category workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. will explore the challenging supply chain and evolving market related to novel beauty products. Exploring HOT LEGAL ISSUES at SupplySide West

NEW IN CONTENT

by Josh Long

Five years after publishing a draft guidance that vexed the dietary supplement industry, FDA has released a new document governing notifications of new dietary ingredients (NDIs). Industry leaders have generally viewed the new draft guidance as an improvement over the former guidance. Industry and regulators are hopeful the revised guidance will result in increased submission of high-quality NDI notifications and compliance with FDA regulations. But at 102 pages, the new document is a beast to dissect. Fortunately, an FDA official, Cara Welch, Ph.D., will be on hand to discuss the new draft guidance during SupplySide West 2016 in Las Vegas. Don’t miss Welch’s featured presentation on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m., when she will comment on the NDI guidance, GMPs (good manufacturing practices) and other critical regulatory issues impacting the supplement industry. FDA isn’t the only federal government agency overseeing dietary supplements. As a 2015 court decision involving Bayer Corp. illustrated, FTC has taken an aggressive— and controversial—stance regarding the evidence that dietary supplement marketers must possess to support or “substantiate” their advertising claims. During SupplySide West, industry lawyers will explore FTC issues, as well as related class-action litigation. Learn more about legal marketing at the Developing and Substantiating Product Claims workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon, underwritten by AIBMR Life Sciences Inc. For more on FTC’s authority to regulate the advertising of dietary supplements, check out this podcast with SupplySide West speaker Katie Bond, senior associate, Kelley, Drye & Warren LLP. Also available is a video on FTC and weight loss claims, featuring SupplySide West speaker Justin J. Prochnow, Esq., shareholder with Greenberg Traurig LLP.

11

SupplySide West is also is hosting a workshop that will explore the increasing role of state attorneys general in monitoring and investigating the dietary supplement industry. Don’t miss the State Attorneys General: Communication & Mitigation Strategies workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m., underwritten by Venable LLP. Among the legal experts who will offer advice on dealing with the states are two former state attorneys general from Arkansas and Maryland. For some perspectives on the states’ interest in monitoring the dietary supplement industry, check out these podcasts with SupplySide West speakers former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler and former Arkansas Attorney General Mark Pryor.

In a cyber-centric world, data privacy and digital security are essential to the well-being of any business, including supplement manufacturers. During SupplySide West, representatives from the law firm Rivkin Radler LLP and other experts will convey the serious risks posed by potential cyber attacks, legal obligations to protect employee and customer data, and the steps that can be taken to protect a business from hackers. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. for the panel discussion: Digital Transformation and the Need for Data Security. It is underwritten by Verizon.

Kicking off the food and beverage education is the Delivering on the Clean Label Expectation all-day summit on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is underwritten by Bunge North America, Cargill, Ingredion and Solvay. Shifting consumer demands have led to immense innovation in the food, beverage and supplement industries, with current trends driven by an emphasis on health and wellness, and a desire for products formulated with cleanlabel ingredients. The sessions will dive deep into top cleanlabel issues, including turning research and development (R&D) challenges into winning formulas; clean-label supply chain considerations; and how to navigate the clean-label market when it comes to marketing and regulatory issues. Watch these related videos from SupplySide West speakers Randy Kreienbrink, vice president, marketing, and Alison Raban, certified food technologist, BI Nutraceuticals; and Jeff Hilton, president and co-founder, BrandHive.

Also top of mind with consumers is the topic of colorants in food and beverage products, with many demanding manufacturers switch to clean-label, natural options. On Thursday, Oct. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m., the Natural Colors: Overcoming Technical Challenges & Consumer Perceptions panel of experts will discuss the science behind new technologies for enhancing the stability and tinctorial strength of natural colors; the regulatory hurdles that exist when formulating with natural food colors; and the implications of the new FDA proposed rule defining “natural” on the color industry.

Gluten-free is more than a trend; it’s a way of life for millions of Americans, with an increasing number of products carrying gluten-free claims. The landscape of what gluten-free options are available continues to expand, although companies must be mindful of the challenges in product development and regulatory oversight. The GlutenFree Product Formulation to Meet Consumer Demands workshop takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop will examine the current glutenfree product landscape at retail; nutrition and formulation considerations in product development; and regulatory requirements and issues related to label claims for glutenfree products. This video from Allen Rekunyk, vice president of business development at Allergen Control Group, offers information on gluten-free certifications. Genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling is one of the industry’s hottest topics, and it is top of mind at federal, state and consumer levels. The demand for natural sweetener alternatives in food, beverages and supplements continues to gain traction as consumers look for reduced-sugar products that don’t sacrifice taste. Attendees at the Selecting Appropriate Sweeteners for Chocolates, Gummies and Chewables panel on Friday, Oct. 7 from 9 to 11 a.m. will learn about recent advances in sweet taste neuroscience and emerging receptor technology; the functional role of sweeteners in confectionery formulations, including crossover supplement delivery formats; and the basic principles of sugars and sweeteners as they relate to confectionery processes, and how alternative bulking agents can play a role. Finally, we all know Americans love to snack, but how do snack companies deliver more than just basic nutrition and actually offer tasty, portable snacks made with simple, clean-label ingredients that deliver on functionality? Attendees of the How to Profit from the Healthy Snack Revolution panel discussion on Friday, Oct. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. will hear experts discuss how to identify top snack categories beyond traditional confectionery and salty snacks; healthy inclusions and additions to enhance the value and bolster nutrition claims; and how the “functional food” space crosses over into the snack aisle. This one-day event features a wide array of industry experts offering firsthand experience, education and information. In addition to participating in panel discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion on hot button media issues affecting the industry by addressing a panel of industry media representatives.

Additional sessions include: •

21 CFR 111 Dietary Supplement GMP Overview

•

Batch Production Records: Do’s and Don’ts

•

Botanical Materials Verification

•

Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

A sampling of topics that will be covered at the Botanical Congress include:

•

Current State of Non-GMO for Dietary Supplements

•

Successful U.S. and global supply chain strategies and management techniques

•

The Top 10 Ways to Get a Warning Letter

•

Regulatory issues and trends regarding the legalization of cannabis

•

Recent research and market trends on the science of aloe

•

Financial trends and opportunities shaping the supplement industry heading into 2017

•

Exploration of various myths about the herbal supplement industry

This year, the AHPA Botanical Congress is designed to offer both broad sessions in the main plenary schedule, as well as breakout sessions diving into hot issues affecting the herbal industry. In the morning, aloe is on the agenda, with speakers tackling topics such as Proposition 65 and its impact on the Aloe vera market, regulatory issues affecting market access, global market trends and the science of aloe. The afternoon breakout session will tackle cannabis, including a legal and policy review, exploration of channels of trade and insights into different product types.

CENTRAL STAGE

PROGRAMMING HUB: SupplySide Central From innovative ingredient presentations, awards ceremonies and hard-hitting educational talks to entertaining, interactive programming reminiscent of game shows and late-night TV, SupplySide Central boasts an array of unique opportunities available to all attendees. Located in a central hub of the exhibit hall, the SupplySide Central stage plays host to gatherings such as Ingredient Launchpad, the consumer packaged goods (CPG) Editor’s Choice Awards and the Vitamin Angels Champion recognition. Educational segments include a wide range of topics such as healthy aging, innovative ingredients, industry case studies, healthy lifestyle (no longer limited solely to sports nutrition), marketing and animal nutrition. Also of note, Thursday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m., Scott Steinford, executive director of the CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) Association, will share an update on the global CoQ10 ingredient market, which exceeded 700 metric tons in 2015. The natural antioxidant helps convert food into energy and has been associated with heart and vascular benefits, making it an important option for supplement developers. Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., GELITA will close down opening day of the SupplySide West Exhibit Hall with “The Late Show.” The party—open to all registration types— combines a mix of guests, trendy performances, hilarious games and awesome giveaways for the crowd, all centered on the sensation of collagen proteins. On Friday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m., one of the SupplySide Central hot topics is a discussion on cannabidiol (CBD), the primary active cannabinoid found in hemp. Recent developments have brought the ingredient under heavy scrutiny and regulatory involvement—despite the potential health benefits identified in research, and the differences between CBD and substances such as cannabis and marijuana. The supply chain is another topic of note, particularly in today’s age of transparency and traceability. The interactive discussion taking place Friday at 11:30 a.m. features experts from Wal-Mart, General Nutrition Corp., Pharmavite and BASF. The panel will review developments of the past year and discuss next steps.

16

Friday at 3 p.m., NSF International will share the eyeopening results from the NSF AuthenTechnologies annual review of 1,200 botanical samples authenticated using next-generation DNA sequencing. Unexpected trends in adulteration by toxic weeds and fillers will be revealed. The study also demonstrated the rapidly changing nature of adulteration, and questions generally held concepts of “common adulterants.” It is critical information for all suppliers, manufacturers and labs using or testing botanicals.

Neo-Pure Designed to Fight Pathogens on Grains

‘Let’s Share’ with Alquimia

Agri-Neo is showcasing Neo-Pure, a validated intervention created specifically to control pathogens on seeds and grains while keeping them organic, raw and viable. The system combines the company’s Neo-Pure liquid solution and dedicated food safety system. Derived from plants, the system harnesses the power of oxygen to control pathogens and unwanted microbes. The Neo-Pure liquid solution is applied in its dedicated food safety system to ensure total coverage of every seed and grain. According to the company, Neo-Pure has been validated to provide a 5-log reduction of pathogens such as Salmonella. Agri-Neo focuses on serving the food safety needs of sprouters of seeds and grains, co-manufacturers and co-packers, and raw food brands. One customer, Dale Donaldson, president, Everspring Farms, commented: “Producing a wide variety of sprouted and non-sprouted grains and seeds, including ancient grains from all over the world, one of Everspring’s fundamental risks has become the ability to ensure product that is free of pathogens and has a plate count of spec that’s within the range our customers want. That’s why we installed the Neo-Pure Food Safety System. It delivers the safety we need, with no heat involved, so there’s no sensory change in the product. Taste and texture are unaffected. Grain looks, smells and tastes just like it came out of the field after the Neo-Pure process, and that’s a critical part of what we’re all about. Neo-Pure really differentiates us in the marketplace, allowing us to provide the safest possible product to our customers.”

Exhibitor NEWS DolCas Biotech’s Turmeric GRAS-Approved for Medical Foods

ADM/Matsutani Emphasize Fiber Formulations

DolCas Biotech LLC announced its BCM-95® turmeric extract was affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for use in foods, dietary supplements and medical foods, following a comprehensive review by a panel of qualified experts. The evaluation was undertaken in accordance with FDA criteria, whereby “reasonable certainty of no harm under the intended conditions of use” must be established. The GRAS evaluation was based on scientific procedures and substantial corroborative evidence derived from historyof-use considerations for related substances. Information obtained from animal studies, metabolism studies, estimated human exposure, in vitro studies and refined chemical characterization in the collective provided broad-based documentation of the safety of the chemical components of BCM-95.

As consumers seek to add more fiber to their diets, they’re looking for it in more convenient, great-tasting products. At SupplySide West, ADM/Matsutani will showcase Fibersol®, a line of soluble dietary fiber ingredients, including the new Fibersol-2L liquid version, in several on-trend prototypes including:

“DolCas has marketed BCM-95 in the United States since 2006, enjoying a steady increase in demand, thanks to dedicated consumers,” said KG Rao, CEO of DolCas. “Attaining GRAS status as a medical food is a strategic move that will position BCM-95 as a leading curcumin brand in the U.S. market.” The expert panel convened by GRAS Associates LLC concluded BCM-95, when being used in accordance with the designated food uses and use levels, is GRAS when consumed as proposed at a maximum of 180 mg per person per day in conventional foods, and at 1,000 mg per person per day in medical foods. “We intend to promote BCM-95 for use in medical foods for various conditions, at a dose level of 500 mg per serving,” said Lauren Samot, R.D., technical support and sales, DolCas Biotech. “If two servings of the subject medical food were consumed daily, the daily dietary exposure level of curcumin would be 1,000 mg per person.”

Exhibitor NEWS Glatt Showcasing New Processing Technologies

Egg-Based IgY Max Improves GI Integrity, Beneficial Flora

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik and its American service center Glatt Air Techniques will showcase innovative fluidized bed and spouted bed technologies to agglomerate, spray granulate, coat and dry various ingredients. Glatt will present innovative processes for products that are supposed to feature particular properties and show solutions for solving technological challenges during production. Fluidized bed and spouted bed technologies are excellent approved methods to spray granulate liquids, to agglomerate powders and to encapsulate sensitive substances. Both technologies are based on the principle of fluidizing particles using upward-flowing process air. Depending on the application requirements, the selection and combination of the right process parameters is important: How fast, if at all, should the product dissolve? When should the flavor or active ingredient be released? What role does bulk density play in terms of application, handling, storage and packaging, and how stable do the particles need to be? Visitors to the technology expert’s booth will be able to delve into a virtual world; augmented reality presentations will offer insight into the process chambers of large-scale facilities.

A new study presented at the Xymogen Xperience Conference found IgY Max®, an egg-based immunoglobulin, improved gastrointestinal (GI) integrity by increasing beneficial flora, reducing gut inflammation and reducing permeability of the gut wall. Subjects reported “a decrease in gas and bloating” and “feeling more energy.” In addition to subjective data, objective markers showed a decrease in gut wall permeability as evidenced by a 95 percent decline in the occurrence of zonulin, a modulating protein. Similarly, a 290 percent growth of diamine oxidase (DAO):histamine ratio demonstrated a decline in inflammation, suggesting greater control over histaminergic conditions such as rashes, bronchospasms, headaches, anxiety and insomnia. Most importantly, results of a digestive stool culture analysis supported a daily 2-g dosage of IgY Max increased the occurrence of beneficial flora, especially Lactobacillus, as well as Bactoroides fragilis, bifidobacterium species, E. coli, Enterococcus and Clostridium.

Exhibitor NEWS Lonza Buys InterHealth

EXHIBITOR NEWS

Lonza agreed to buy InterHealth Nutraceuticals from Kainos Captial for as much as a US$300 million. The purchase price is about 10 times InterHealth’s earnings (EBIDTA for 12 months ended July 2016), broken into one upfront payment and one earn-out payment. The transaction is expected to close in September 2016 and be immediately accretive to Lonza’s earnings. “With this acquisition, Lonza is taking a further step along our strategic path as a high-value supplier to the health care continuum,” said Richard Ridinger, CEO of Lonza, in a press release. “Lonza will leverage the successful product portfolio of InterHealth on a global level and in turn will be able to benefit from InterHealth’s proven management and branding capabilities to promote Lonza’s existing product portfolio. We see significant positive synergies from this combination.” InterHealth’s roster of branded ingredients is led by its flagship UC-II® undenatured type 2 collagen for joint health, and includes Sytrinol® and Cardiaslim® for heart health, ChromeMate® for blood sugar health, and a number of weight management aids such as Lowat®, Meratrim®, SuperCitrimax® and 7-Keto®. “In joining forces with Lonza, our customers, employees and stakeholders will benefit from being part of a more diversified leader with significantly greater global market presence,” said Paul Dijkstra, president and CEO of InterHealth, in an emailed statement. “Our combination of branded nutraceutical ingredients creates an influential global player with a commitment to product research and innovation, which will be incredibly well positioned to redefine the dietary supplement, and functional food and beverage industry.” Dijkstra explained Kainos Capital’s investment strategy from day one was to build InterHealth’s portfolio of growing and strategically relevant branded ingredients. “Since the Kainos acquisition in 2014, the InterHealth brands have grown exponentially, and the timing was right for a strategic firm to take over the brands to further develop them into different markets and to expand customer base,” he said. “Over the last three years, InterHealth has acquired a manufacturing facility and two ingredient companies.”

Lallemand Bio-Ingredients Gains Non-GMO Verification Lallemand Bio-Ingredients announced it has successfully obtained Non-GMO Project verification for its whole cell yeast (Saccharomyces and torula), yeast extracts (umami and savory) and yeast autolysates. According to Lallemand, with the increasing North American consumer demand for nonGMO (genetically modified organism) products, raw material suppliers that want to be part of this initiative are requested to provide non-GMO products. “Although Lallemand’s inactive yeast products are not genetically modified, we have taken the extra step in order to meet the more stringent Non-GMO Project standards,” said Joelle Proulx, director of quality assurance and regulatory affairs, Lallemand Bio-Ingredients Division. “The Non-GMO Project is definitely the strictest non-GMO certification program currently available. The standard goes beyond the absence of genetically modified DNA, and investigates the processes used to prepare all substrates, inputs and processing aids used to produce the yeast. This makes the Non-GMO Project Verification suitable for consumers who choose to stay away from GMOs.”

Olygose Sharing New Study Results on AlphaGOS, Probiome Olygose has completed a study regarding the probiomemodulating effects of its patented AlphaGOS®, a lactose-free, plant-based galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS). Olygose compared the effects of AlphaGOS with lactose-based beta-GOS in an in vitro experiment. Both ingredients were cultured in lean and obese fecal samples, and Bifidobacterium growth as well as fermentation patterns were followed. AlphaGOS displayed patterns similar to beta-GOS regarding the increase in bifidobacteria counts and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by the microbiota of both types of subjects. François Delbaere, CEO, Olygose, commented: “These results confirm that AlphaGOS exerts prebiotic effects both in lean and obese subjects. It can modulate the fermentation pattern of the intestinal probiome and thus potentially fight dysbiosis (dysregulation of the microbiota). We expected to obtain benefits similar to those observed with beta-GOS, which are well-established prebiotics and have been extensively studied in a variety of conditions. This is great news for supplements manufacturers who want to use GOS in lactose-free and/or plant-based formulations.”

Exhibitor NEWS Natreon Promotes PrimaVie Study Results, Preps AyuFlex Breakfast Brief

ARL Celebrates Lab Opening with Apple Drawing

Natreon’s PrimaVie®, a high-quality, purified and standardized extract of shilajit, significantly up-regulated the genes responsible for collagen synthesis, according to a human clinical study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. In this open-label, longitudinal study, 16 overweight/class I obese Americans (men and women) were followed for 12 weeks to determine the effects of oral supplementation of PrimaVie and exercise training on human skeletal muscle adaptation. Subjects received 250 mg of PrimaVie twice daily for eight weeks followed by an additional four weeks of supplementation with exercise. Consistent with microarray results, significant up-regulation of collagen and other extracellular matrix (ECM)-associated genes was noted in the muscle samples (some up to 1,500 fold) following eight weeks of oral supplementation with PrimaVie compared with the baseline visit. An additional four weeks of supplementation with exercise further induced the expression of the microarray identified genes. In addition, PrimaVie supplementation was well tolerated without changes in blood glucose levels and lipid profile.

SupplySide & Vitafoods Global Storefronts: The Year-Round

IN THE NEWS

Connection Point SupplySide West is where more than 14,000 industry members will connect at the industry’s gathering point where science and strategy intersect. This year’s expo hall features 1,200+ companies offering more than 10,000 ingredients and services. It’s a high water mark for introductions of new ingredients, showcases of science and research, and demonstrations of how companies can provide the solutions needed to drive business forward. After the show, the need to find new suppliers and solutions and explore new offerings doesn’t end. This is where SupplySide & Vitafoods Global Storefronts fill the gap. Since the Global Storefronts opened one year ago, more than 36,000 ingredient buyers have turned to these virtual booths to explore and discover ingredients and solutions. In June 2016 alone, they downloaded more than 9,000 content pieces (whitepapers, case studies, etc.) from individual Global Storefronts. “Global Storefronts is quickly becoming the standard search and discovery platform for our audience of researchers, ingredient buyers and formulators as they look for new ingredients and solutions for their food, beverage, dietary supplement, animal nutrition and personal care finished products,” said Jon Benninger, vice president of Informa’s Global Health & Nutrition Network. “As SupplySide West is the industry’s gathering point, Global Storefronts serves that purpose in an online environment, optimized for that platform.” The site is built as an ingredient and solutions directory for professionals across the dietary supplement, food, beverage, personal care and sports nutrition industries to explore and discover ingredients and solutions all year long. Unlike many other sites, this platform doesn’t make it hard for a user to get access to supplier content; it is built to make it easy for you to search and find the most relevant suppliers based on what you are looking for. This web-based marketing platform features “landing pages” for every Global Storefronts owner, featuring everything the audience needs to connect, from company description to ingredient listing, and hosted assets such as whitepapers, spec sheets, videos and more. There is even a “request a proposal” feature to directly get in touch with suppliers most of interest.

We’re now at the forefront of the health and wellness sector, having combined premium branded ingredients with a leader in customized food and beverage solutions. Customers rely on the Albion and VitaCholine brands for scientifically proven, premium health ingredients that are recognized worldwide for their quality, efficacy and safety. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? A major challenge manufacturers face is that few suppliers offer expertise in both ingredients and application solutions. Without single-source support, the new product development process can become iterative and slow. As a full-spectrum provider, we speed development and bring tremendous value to our customers. We innovate based on consumer insights to provide customers with great-tasting product concepts that deliver relevant and appealing health benefits. Don’t just take our word for it—visit the SensoryEffects booth (S127) and try our orange chocolate sports nutrition drink. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Our brand story starts with the promise of better wellness by filling nutritional gaps that can negatively impact health. We help close these gaps by improving the nutritional experience, so consumers are motivated to consume fortified products. Our sweet spot lies in the combination of flavor and proven ingredients, providing the consumer with tasty and tangible health benefits. Our ingredient brands are worldwide leaders in their categories. Albion combines science and patented technology to create special organic forms of inorganic mineral elements called amino acid chelates for enhanced absorption and bioavailability. VitaCholine is the premier brand of choline, an essential nutrient which, incidentally, is also the latest nutrient to receive a reference daily intake (RDI) as part of the new nutrition labeling. SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers?

4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products?

Producing natural astaxanthin on a commercial scale is not an easy task; producing natural astaxanthin that is also sustainable is even more difficult. Algatechnologies AstaPure® brand doesn’t use solvents in its extraction process, and has production and quality assurance (QA) processes that adhere to the strictest guidelines in the industry. It is free of pesticides and uses resources only from nature, such as the sun and purified water extracted from salinated wells. This is what makes our factory stand out from other producers.

Natural, sustainable, non-GMO (genetically modified organism), scientifically proven, what more can you ask for? Our AstaPure is produced from the microalgae haematococcus pluvialis. Astaxanthin is, in fact, a protective agent the algae produced in order to protect itself from stress conditions and radiation from the sun. The same mechanism of action is what it does in our body: protecting our cells from oxidative stress. Our astaxanthin is produced in a closed system using only natural sunlight for growth.

2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Algatechnologies is continuously striving to make different formulations for all-around applications. Our AstaPure 5 percent oleoresin natural astaxanthin is the latest arrival to our AstaPure family of natural astaxanthin of 10 percent and 20 percent oleoresin, as well as our 2.5 percent beadlets that are highly stable for use both in hard shell capsules as well as in direct compression. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? We see more customers interested in developing "inside out" beauty products and cosmeceuticals. Natural astaxanthin has shown to benefit skin health. This is a growing sector not only for Asia Pacific—where these type of products are high in demand—but an increasing amount of customers around the world are interested in this type of application.

Company Name: Cargill Contact: Andrew Ohmes Title: Global Business Director, High Intensity Sweeteners

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? One of the biggest advancements we have achieved in the past year is pushing strong into categories outside of beverage with our ViaTech® stevia sweetener. Beverage is a natural product application for stevia because when sugar is removed, the product can be bulked back with water. Other product applications are more difficult because sugar has so many functional attributes that add to the product, such as providing texture or helping the product brown or rise. We have taken great strides in research and development (R&D) and are pleased with how well ViaTech has performed in snacks, cereals, nutritional bars, confectionery and bakery. Another achievement was the introduction of EverSweet™ nextgeneration sweetener. This new sweetener has great taste with up to 100 percent sugar replacement and is made with the same sweetness found in the stevia leaf, to delight the taste buds with a calorie-free product. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? There is high demand for sugar reduction in foods and beverages while also maintaining great taste. ViaTech stevia leaf extract delivers! It helps food and beverage manufacturers achieve optimal sweetness and significant sugar reduction in even the most challenging reduced- and zero-calorie formulations. Part of what sets the ViaTech portfolio apart from other stevia sweeteners is Cargill’s proprietary taste-prediction model, which can precisely predict which combination of steviol glycosides deliver optimal taste and sweetness. At SupplySide West 2016, ViaTech will be showcased in a variety of great-tasting food and beverage applications. Tasting is believing!

3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Roughly 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year. Nearly 2 billion adults worldwide qualified as overweight in 2014, and 600 million are considered obese. In an effort to combat the global increase in obesity and diabetes, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies are under extreme pressure from governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the public to reduce sugar levels in foods and beverages. Creating the most sugar-like experience for consumers in reduced sugar applications is one of the major goals with new product development. Effective blending of sweetener ingredients can significantly improve the quality of sweetness, enhance sweet/ sour balance and deliver a more robust flavor, which are all critical sensory characteristics for a successful product launch. For example, using stevia and erythritol together can result in excellenttasting products. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? ViaTech stevia leaf extract stands for great taste and applications expertise. Cargill has deep knowledge and expertise to assist customers with formulation and application work. For stevia sweeteners alone, we have spent hundreds of thousands of hours studying the sweet components within the stevia leaf, called steviol glycosides. We understand how these steviol glycosides act alone and in combination—at a molecular level and at a sensory level. Our food scientists have been working with stevia sweeteners in a variety of food and beverage applications since 2008, when stevia was approved for use in food and beverages in the United States by FDA.

Enough sweet talk.

Taste the advantage of ViaTech stevia sweetener. ®

Let’s cut to the chase: ViaTech® goes further in reducing sugar – while controlling off-notes. The ViaTech® portfolio uses proprietary technology that makes it easy to develop a great-tasting stevia-sweetened food or beverage, allowing you to get to market sooner. Enough said.

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? As a result of a petition by Colorcon, FDA approved the use of Spirulina Extract as a colorant in film coatings for dietary supplements. The approval of Spirulina Extract gives our customers the opportunity to utilize the color blue in the consumer tablet-taking experience without the use of a synthetic pigment. As blue is a primary color and can be blended with colorants that are red and yellow, the approval of Spirulina Extract enables an endless variety of shades or hues that appeal to the consumer, with increased brand association. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Opadry® and Opadry® II, Film Coating Systems for tablets formulated with a wide variety of ingredients including non-synthetic pigments. Colorcon is in the position to provide the most technically feasible and consumer-friendly solution to applying a coating to a tablet. Colorcon film coatings can be formulated to include ingredients that today’s consumers want to see on the label of their supplements. Conversely, Colorcon is able to formulate out many of the ingredients that consumers are demanding be excluded from their supplements. Opadry® NUTRAPURE™ is the world’s first USDA-certified organic film coating for tablets that inherently imparts an elegant gloss and slip to any tablet. NUTRAPURE provides the manufacturer of dietary supplements with all the technical and operational benefits of a cost-effective film coating. Nutrateric® is an enteric polymer system that enhances the tablet/ capsule-taking experience for the consumer. Enteric systems are utilized either to protect the patient from the supplement or to protect the supplement from the patient. With supplements such

as fish oil and garlic concentrates, an enteric coating allows the consumer to realize the benefit of these products without the adverse "side effects" of fish burps or stomach upset. In the case of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) or probiotics, the enteric coating keeps the supplement viable by protecting it from the low pH of the stomach, and delivering it further down the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where it can provide the maximum benefit to the body. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Productivity enhancements and consumer-focused ingredients are driving the demand. Colorcon products have always enabled manufacturers to realize high production yields from their existing assets when the manufacturers adopt our newer technology products. Adopting new Colorcon technology has allowed customers to offset capital spends that were thought to be required in order to improve upon capacity. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Partnering with Colorcon gives the manufacturers and marketers of dietary supplements access to the most innovative use of ingredients, the widest palette of colors with or without synthetics, the technical support that makes innovation easy to implement, and the highest manufacturing quality standards in the industry. Loyal consumers of supplements are demonstrating changing preferences toward cleaner labels and ingredients that enhance the supplement experience. New markets using ingredients that are Kosher and Halal approved give access to consumers that seek the benefits of supplements. All of these things come together and provide the opportunity to make deeper associations of brands with an increasingly diverse and discerning buying public.

Company Name: DuPont Nutrition & Health Contact: Chad Coleman Title: Marketing Communication Leader, Americas

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? Consumers want to be able to verify the quality, safety and potency of the supplements they buy. The USP Verified seal confirms manufacturers are complying with proper safety and labeling practices, and that the product has been independently tested for purity and potency. We currently have seven probiotics strains with USP monographs, giving our customers the widest selection of options. And we are currently awaiting approval of the first dietary supplement monograph from USP. Additionally, powder dispersibility in dry blended beverages is important to consumers. Comments such as "too many lumps" are among the most common complaints heard from consumers of powdered beverages. Our new SUPRO® XT 221D isolated soy protein offers the opportunity to improve the dispersibility of your formulas, delivers excellent flavor and makes your brand more appealing to consumers. It’s a high-quality, plantbased protein, backed by years of clinical research demonstrating unique health benefits. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? We will be showing a versatile platform this year. We will be sharing health and wellness consumer insights from our proprietary research designed to help companies develop and market their products. This valuable information will aid manufacturers in determining the motivations, needs and behaviors of various consumer groups in today’s evolving market. Many experts from our probiotics business will be discussing the widest range of shelf-stable clinically documented strains, our superior manufacturing consistency, and unrivaled customer support. They will be sampling probiotic products for immune health. We will also have our protein experts on hand

to discuss plant-based protein trends and sample a new beverage concept based on plant protein. Additionally, we will be showcasing our expertise in food protection, an increasingly important consideration in the nutrition bar industry. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? In the past, the interaction consumers had with their health was mainly reactive. Experimentation with exercise, diet and alternative medicine has led to the gradual transition from health as medicine to health as lifestyle. The reactive mentality has converged with a more proactive attitude toward wellness. Whether that manifests itself in specific dietary supplementation or the desire for shorter ingredients lists, our teams have been busy helping our customers navigate the complex formulation and marketing changes in this new landscape. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Two foods may look identical, but one tastes better, delivers more nutrients or stays fresh longer. It’s what’s inside that makes the difference. Just as you think about the ingredients of your products, you should think about the ingredients in your partners. DuPont Nutrition & Health delivers unmatched value with our ingredient portfolio that’s wider than most and gives us a versatile toolkit to tackle any problem. But what truly sets us apart are the ingredients you can’t see. Our in-depth knowledge of food and nutrition makes innovation happen. SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? Historically, Federal Equipment Company has been a process and packaging equipment supplier to the natural products industry. We aligned with Techceuticals in 2014 to provide training and troubleshooting for solid-dose manufacturing within our facility. And now, we have launched an online training series that can reliably, consistently and affordably train everyone in production on soliddose manufacturing. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Federal Equipment Company will showcase an inventory of available equipment that cannot be found at any other single source – all the equipment you need from raw material and ingredient production through finished dose manufacturing and packaging for all product forms. We are currently featuring top-of-the-line equipment from Pfizer as well as equipment formerly owned by GSK and Sonofi. In addition, Techceuticals will showcase a new online training program for solid-dose manufacturers as well as programs for in-person training, troubleshooting, and formulation assistance in our soliddosage lab in Cleveland, Ohio. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Health-conscious consumers demand natural options for ingredients and dietary supplements. As the demand for natural products and ingredients has grown, so has the consumer and regulatory scrutiny associated with them. Manufacturing processes require tighter controls and reliability, which can be obtained from quality-designed and manufactured equipment. Unfortunately, the costs for natural products manufacturers to specify and manufacture new equipment may be large obstacles. Federal Equipment Company provides an

alternative to acquire equipment specifically designed to meet the highest pharmaceutical manufacturing standards at a fraction of the costs and lead times required for new equipment. Additionally, our partnership with Techceuticals provides the knowledge and expertise to assist with equipment selection, start-up processes and operational training, troubleshooting, risk assessment and optimization. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Federal Equipment Company’s brand story is really about affordable reliability—reliable equipment, immediately available at an affordable price, that can be used to produce safe and effective products. We accomplish this by acquiring equipment from sources that spare no expense in the design and construction of that equipment. Techceuticals’ brand offers solid-dose production problem-solving through application of unique technical knowhow to train, troubleshoot and evaluate processes and formulations. Everything we do helps our customers reliably, efficiently and affordably produce more quality products at the end of their production lines. No other company in the world provides this unique expertise in the manufacture and packaging of tablets and capsules with an extremely broad selection of processing and packaging equipment for all pharmaceutical and supplement forms as well as natural product raw materials and ingredients.

4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products?

We have developed advanced liposomal liquid manufacturing capabilities, which provide the ability to make liposome liquid supplements with greater efficiency and lower costs. This advanced delivery mechanism can result in greater bioavailability of nutrients, and appeals to consumers who dislike taking pills or are wary of the additional ingredients in gummy vitamins. Our liquid liposomal prostrate supplement has been selected as a finalists for the 2016 SupplySide CPG Editor’s Choice Awards.

More than 40 years ago, FoodScience Corp. made waves in the industry with its flagship products, N,N-Dimethylglycine (DMG) and Perna canaliculus. Since then, we have expanded and customized the product line to suit the varied needs of clinicians, retailers and veterinarians. FoodScience offers nutrients and phytonutrients in evidence-based formulas, targeted to specific physiology in a variety of delivery systems (capsules, chewable, powders, tablets, liquids, liposomal liquids, beverages and pet chews), using only the highestquality ingredients for clinicians and retailers alike.

2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? We are showcasing our human and animal supplement manufacturing capabilities. We offer the ability to custom formulate, or provide turnkey standard formulas and packaging for distribution domestically or internationally. Our experience in doctor, vet and retail channels gives us the ability to meet anyone’s needs, and we are able to fill a range of quantities—from dozens to thousands. We manufacture and package our own animal chews and liquid products, which gives our customers great flexibility. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Consumers are increasingly interested in unique delivery mechanisms for vitamins and supplements. While we do traditional tablets and capsules, we can also offer powders, chews and liquids. We are also able to offer chewable animal supplements in resealable jars that allow for smaller runs than in custom printed pouches.

We are an FDA-registered GMP (good manufacturing practice)certified facility, a member of the Natural Products Association (NPA), a founding member of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), and we can produce organic and EU-certified products. Now in our third generation of family ownership—and still in our home state of Vermont—we continue to help set precedents in the industry, grow rapidly and bring our best to the table every day.

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? It is difficult to choose one, because Gencor has had a great year with several big advancements. Our two branded fenugreek extracts, Testofen® and Libifem® each have a newly completed "gold standard" randomized controlled trial (RCT). The new Testofen study focused on the symptoms of andropause, whereas the Libifem study primarily focused on symptoms of menopause. These ingredients, already well proven in the marketplace, now have new evidence supporting healthy aging. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Some show highlights include our launch of a line of algae oil. It is clean, solvent-free, cold-pressed, sustainable and made in the United States. One particular algae oil is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), palmitoleic acid and phospholipids, and includes a range of omega-3, -4s, -5s, -6s, -7s and -9s. The content of the oil and the quality of production are unique. We are also showcasing AquaCelle™, our SMEDDS (self micro emulsifying drug delivery system), which has new PK (pharmacokinetic) studies completed on CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10), EPA/DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and curcumin, showing highly increased absorption. AquaCelle now comes in a powder-based form. It is a commercial product with a high loading of omega-3s, with no fishy smell, that is water dispersible and suitable for all powder applications. Come visit us at SupplySide to learn more about these products at Booth L149.

3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Some of the hottest items in the industry are poorly bioavailable. The AquaCelle platform is purpose-built to increase absorption of critical nutrients. Many people are worried about the sustainability and pollution of the ocean’s fisheries. Our algae oil is grown in a clean, fully controlled and scalable system with only water, carbon dioxide (CO2) and nutrients as the inputs. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Gencor’s research is always focusing on developing innovative ingredients and technologies to bring out the best in our clients' formulations.

Company Name: Gnosis Contact: Mike Petteruti Title: Vice President Gnosis USA

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? 2016 has seen Gnosis collecting brilliant achievements related to the qualification of its nutritional ingredients in term of safety, quality and regulatory compliance. We have been engaged with different regulatory authorities for new approvals and registrations in the world, and we received recognitions and several green lights. We have achieved this mostly as a result of the intense and integrated activity of our research and development (R&D), quality, regulatory, commercial and marketing departments. • vitaMK7®, the natural vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7, became the USP Standard Reference, which defines a high-quality standard for an optimal vitamin K2 • Australian Health Authority – TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) recognized the USP monograph as the guidance for qualified vitamin K2 • vitaMK7® was introduced in the Brazilian market • Quatrefolic®, already the benchmark for the folate derivatives industry, was approved in new countries • A new U.S. medical food formulated with Quatrefolic® was awarded at Vitafoods as the Finished Product of the Year • The S-adenosylmethionine-based nutritional yeast Superesse® received a health claim for joint nutraceutical applications in Japan, which refers to “Improvement for the joint wrongness” 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? At SupplySide West, we will showcase Mythocondro®, the new non-animal chondroitin of fermentation origin, the result of several years of R&D that has generated five patents based upon scientific advances in the biotechnological areas. Mythocondro® resolves all concerns of animal-derived chondroitin, thanks to its breakthrough features:

• a controlled, reliable and reproducible source of chondroitin sulfate with high purity • homogeneous structure and physico-chemical properties • a very low protein content unlike animal-derived chondroitin sulfate and a substantial absence of unusually sulfated and oversulfated disaccharides • demonstrated biological activity • established safety with published results 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Mythocondro® meets the growing request of strict and guaranteed quality standards of chondroitin sulfate, in a global market, where there are growing demands for effective prevention of decreased bone health in the aging population. Mythocondro® is not subject to the availability and limitations typical of animal sources, and/or concerns about the origin and fate of animals used. Religious reasons and/or vegetarian habits have precluded the introduction of chondroitin dietary supplements in key emerging markets, such as the Middle East and Asia, and in consolidated markets, such as North America and Europe. Mythocondro® is the first chondroitin sulfate clinically tested and environmentally friendly, suitable for vegetarians, and free from religious restrictions and supply issues. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Since we opened our doors in 1989, Gnosis has been committed to improving the quality of life for humans and animals, and promoting their well-being, with the specific target of worldwide advanced nutrition. "Science behind health" feeds Gnosis' commitment to develop clinically proven bioactive compounds and to perfect what already exists in the market, offering solutions to challenges and tangible benefits for consumers.

Company Name: Heliae Contact: Len Smith Title: Chief Business Officer

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? Our improvements in natural astaxanthin-rich microalgae oil production technology have allowed Heliae to produce a product that balances a quality profile and price that should cause dietary supplement and functional food companies previously not exploring astaxanthin products to reconsider this amazing product. We call our product TruAzta™. Although TruAzta is made entirely in the United States, the technology behind TruAzta has proven to have international appeal, as our joint venture Alvita will launch a similar Japanese-made product later this year. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Our focus at SupplySide West is TruAzta, our complete natural astaxanthin algal oil ingredient for dietary supplements and functional foods. For companies not in the market, we hope to inspire them to take another look at natural astaxanthin-rich microalgae oil. For companies using astaxanthin, we hope to inspire them to look at how these ingredients are made. At Heliae, we believe that how something is made matters. Sometimes, it makes all the difference. Our production technology utilizes a proprietary growth system followed by a fully enclosed open water astaxanthin expression system. This harmonization of technology and infrastructure allows the intense natural sunlight of the Arizona desert to induce natural astaxanthin production from our microalgae cultures while blocking contaminants. Using supercritical CO2 (carbon dioxide) extraction, a complete astaxanthin-rich Haematococcus algae oil (HALO) is produced. This HALO contains all of the natural lipid, carotenoid and tocopherol molecules produced by the microalgae, along with the astaxanthin, and gives TruAzta the natural astaxanthin complex that synthetically produced astaxanthin is missing.

3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Consumers are increasingly demanding natural products and ingredients that provide specific health benefits. Natural astaxanthin’s established powerful free-radical quenching capabilities, which far exceed other common antioxidants, coupled with a deep and growing body of scientific research demonstrating health benefits across a broad spectrum of health concerns, make it a key ingredient of interest. Specifically related to nutraceuticals, consumers are seeking supplements that target key ailments; for example, Baby Boomers have specific concerns about inflammation, maintenance of vision and cognitive health. With properties that give the natural astaxanthin molecule a key advantage in these areas, TruAzta is positioned to help supplement suppliers target this audience with a wide range of indication-specific products. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? TruAzta by Heliae is a natural, high-quality astaxanthin oleoresin resulting from the best of what science and nature have to offer. Produced 100 percent in the United States, TruAzta begins with algae grown using proprietary technology, then allowed to mature under the powerful natural Arizona sunlight. TruAzta is the result of harmonizing cutting-edge science with the power of the natural process that allows organisms to thrive under challenging conditions, providing a natural product with remarkable quality and purity. Our brand reflects a commitment to quality natural production. In its complete form, astaxanthin-rich microalgae oil has an inherently captivating natural story—one of survival, longevity and of overcoming daunting obstacles. Couple these features with a production system that optimizes the approach to making this natural product, and full potential of this amazing ingredient can be achieved.

The company’s core technology, Veriflow, is a patented game-changing platform that integrates molecular diagnostics, antibody design and immounoassays. Veriflow has been applied across multiple industries, including food safety and beverage quality. In the last several years, the company has completed validation of the technology in the most challenging matrices, launching 15 different test configurations. It now has over 300 customers in 65 countries using the technology to ensure product quality and brand image. The biggest advancement we have made recently is that our Veriflow pathogen product portfolio is one of the only rapid methods currently validated and approved for whey protein powder by the AOAC. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Invisible Sentinel will be showcasing a wide variety of microbial detection tools that are validated and approved by AOAC. Of particular interest for attendees are the Veriflow detection tools for Salmonella species, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria and Staphylococcus aureus. The most demonstrative proof of our technology’s robustness is the comprehensive validation and AOAC approval of Veriflow used in challenging matrices. The Veriflow pathogen product portfolio is one of the only rapid methods currently validated and approved for whey protein powder by the AOAC. Invisible Sentinel’s technology can provide on-site rapid, accurate and easy-to-use tools for pathogen detection to the food protection industry.

3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? New regulations, harsher penalties and numerous brand-threatening recalls have place substantial pressure on food manufacturers. These market conditions require a paradigm change in food safety and quality management programs. The global dietary supplement, and functional food and beverage industries have an added difficulty, given the use of a wide variety of raw ingredients and the complexity of the final product. To meet current demand for safe products, manufacturers must adopt testing strategies that address and overcome these challenges. While many conventional chemistry methods work just as well in this sector as they do in the general food market, this is not the case for microbiological tests. The changing regulatory requirements and the complexity of the functional food products calls for faster, more robust microbial testing and monitoring tools. Many of the rapid microbial technologies that are on the market for testing are not robust enough to provide accurate results. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? The Veriflow portfolio of on-site detection tools offers unmatched specificity, single-step enrichments, strong validation data, unrivaled sensitivity and unsurpassed ease of use. The most demonstrative proof of our technology’s robustness is the comprehensive validation and AOAC approval of Veriflow used in challenging matrices. The Veriflow pathogen product portfolio is one of the only rapid methods currently validated and approved for whey protein powder by the AOAC. This technology enables early action at critical control points to increase our customers’ confidence in product quality and brand integrity.

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? This past year, the beneficial effects of LifeinU™ Bacillus subtilis CU1 (BSCU1) in supporting immune responses were acknowledged by the scientific community in a peer-reviewed publication discussing the findings of a recent clinical trial* on healthy seniors. With a soaring number of seniors worldwide, many of them wanting to maintain an active lifestyle, substantiating LifeinU™ BSCU1’s potential in supporting the immune system seemed relevant; especially as the body’s natural defenses decline with age. By using LifeinU™ BSCU1 in their formulations, our customers benefit from an ingredient with clinically proven efficacy in supporting the immune system, which gives them an edge in a highly competitive market. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? We will be featuring: • LifeinU™ BSCU1, a clinically proven innovative solution to support immune health. Being highly stable, this ingredient can survive extreme conditions, such as exposure to the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract and harsh manufacturing processes; thus offering next-to-endless application opportunities. It has been established that its daily consumption was safe and did not induce side effects. Therefore, unlike more seasonal “immune health ingredients” used in colder months, LifeinU™ BSCU1 can be considered as an effective prevention strategy to help stay healthy and perform well all year long. • LifeinU™ L.rhamnosus GG, one of the most studied probiotic bacterium in the world, of which consumption has proven to be beneficial to digestive and immune health. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? With probiotics being the most successful functional ingredient after vitamins and minerals, consumed over three times more than omega-3s,** the segment is thriving. One of the main trends we are observing is a growing interest from our customers for applications going beyond dietary supplements. Driving this trend is the rising popularity of functional foods and beverages among consumers, who are increasingly focused on achieving wellness through diet. As a consequence, products such as coffee, cereal bars or baked goods featuring probiotics are flourishing, allowing consumers to combine efficacy and indulgence. 4. Today’s end-consumers are looking for transparency, and this is exactly what our customers are able to offer them when using probiotic bacterium LifeinU™ BSCU1 in their formulations. Company Name: Polyphenolics, a division of Constellation Brands Contact: James A. Kennedy, Ph.D. Title: President

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? We have established applications for our MegaNatural® BP and MegaNatural Gold grape seed extracts in sports nutrition supplements. This gives our customers two additional clinically studied ingredients to consider when creating their next sports nutrition formulation. Because they are 100 percent water soluble, formulating with MegaNatural products is easy, as they are easily added to functional beverages without precipitating out of solution. They can also be included in capsules, shots, shakes, gummies, bars, powder mixes, etc., thereby providing convenient delivery systems to cater to onthe-go consumers. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? Polyphenolics is introducing two of our patented ingredients for use in sports nutrition formulations. Exercise increases the production of free radicals, and radical production can exceed the antioxidant system. Left unchecked, these radicals can lead to cellular damage. One of the richest sources of natural antioxidants is grape seed extract. Not all antioxidants are the same or as effective. Patented, clinically shown MegaNatural grape seed extracts are rich in antioxidants and may reduce free radicals.* • MegaNatural Gold – A unique form of grape seed extract that has been clinically shown to be an effective antioxidant.* • MegaNatural BP – A unique form of grape seed extract that has been clinically shown to maintain healthy blood pressure levels within the normal range.* • MegaNatural BP – Is also an antioxidant that helps support endothelial function by maintaining healthy nitric oxide levels that are within the normal range. This helps support healthy vasodilation and blood flow.*

In addition, we have several MegaNatural products that contain grape anthocyanins. Epidemiological studies have drawn correlations between anthocyanin consumption and general health. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? People are seeking to live longer and healthier lives and know that getting active and staying active is crucial. Our MegaNatural products don’t just cater to extreme athletes, but also to those who are actively striving to maintain their good health for a lifetime. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Since 1996, Polyphenolics has been realizing the health benefits of the grape. Polyphenolics is a science-driven organization focused on providing well-understood functional ingredients to our customers that consider the needs of consumers. Polyphenolics cares about people. We are part of the fabric of California agriculture, and value the growers—who are the ultimate source of our MegaNatural products—and our employees, who carefully oversee MegaNatural product production. We understand the importance of health in the general population, and when the CARDIA and SPRINT studies were published, we alerted the media about how MegaNatural products may help. Polyphenolics gets involved. The topic of adulteration has been a constant in recent headlines. Formulators are hard-pressed to find safe, traceable ingredients for use in dietary supplements. Polyphenolics’ MegaNatural products are traceable, trusted and transparent. Polyphenolics can substantiate freshness, identity, domestic origin, and absence of chemical contaminants and genetic modification. Polyphenolics is a proud supporter of the American Botanical Council’s (ABC) Botanical Adulterants Program. capitalize on fantastic opportunities for growth.

In 2016, Viva 5 successfully concluded a 24-month real-time stability study on our proprietary probiotic gummy. It became the world’s only true probiotic gummy with at least two years of realtime stability.

Consumers continue to ask for new and unique functional products that fuel their bodies and improve their overall well-being. Viva 5 has invested in many new science-based ingredients and attractive confectionery delivery systems, along with extensively studied probiotic strains, that all help make improving your health achievable for everyone.

Viva 5 also concluded two successful probiotic scientific studies. One of these studies was a randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled clinical study using our shelf-stable probiotic gummy. This study showed that Viva 5’s proprietary probiotic gummy may help defend against occasional irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms in healthy populations. The investment in research on our proprietary ingredients and products provides our customers with confidence regarding the superior safety, quality and efficacy of our Viva 5 portfolio. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? We will be showcasing a variety of proprietary ingredients and product delivery systems for nutritional supplements, as well as extensively studied probiotic strains that complement the health care portfolios of our clients. With sales of confectionery supplements on the rise (91 percent between Aug. 2013 and 2015), our goal is to help attendees

3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services?

We are very committed to the clean-label process and making our products more “healthy.” In fact, more than 75 percent of consumers read product labels and want to know what’s inside a product. Thus, simplifying ingredient lists and removing artificial ingredients are a big focus for Viva 5. For example, instead of using a traditional sugar base for our best-selling gummies, we use a natural fruit juice base—a healthier alternative. We have also developed sugar-free, gluten-free, GMO-free and animal-free varieties to suit customers with dietary restrictions. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Viva 5 aims to make health and wellness products fun and exciting for all of our customers, allowing them to appeal to a wider consumer demographic base. Compliant products made with well-researched ingredients and attractive delivery forms (such as gummies) increase trust and create better partnership opportunities. Then, these great products become part of an everyday lifestyle and allow consumers to improve their quality of life. With probiotic strains supported by extensive clinical trials coupled with reduced minimum order quantities (MOQs) and lead times— along with new confectionery delivery systems—Viva 5 is an excellent partner for fast-paced and innovative science-based companies in the health and wellness industry.

Company Name: Watson Inc. Contact: Tom Tchang Title: VP of Nutritional Ingredients Division

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? Watson has always tried to be at the forefront of technology, market trends and regulatory requirements. This year, we achieved our fifth consecutive year of an "A" rating for BRC Certification. We are particularly proud that we achieved a "AA" rating this year, as the BRC program had to meet the new FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) requirements. From a market trend standpoint, we have upgraded our operations and certifications to meet organic, "natural" and nongenetically modified organism (GMO) status where applicable. Lastly, we have developed a set of encapsulated vitamins to withstand high gummy processing temperatures. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? • Directly Compressible Sweeteners – Watson’s EZ-Press™ line of directly compressible sweeteners is designed for use in the dietary supplement industry for the production of high-quality chewable and smooth-melt supplement tablets. The EZ-Press line of sweeteners has been carefully formulated and produced under controlled conditions to promote exceptional flow of product in the hopper and uniform fill in the dies. The cohesive properties of EZ-Press sweeteners result in firm tablets and minimized friability. Tablets manufactured with Watson’s EZ-Press line of sweeteners exhibit good disintegration properties and uniform dosage. • Microencapsulated Vitamins Designed for Vitamin Gummies – Solvent coating is a fluid bed process used to apply a waterinsoluble coating (such as ethylcellulose dissolved in alcohol) onto a particle substrate. These specialty coatings protect sensitive ingredients incompatible with certain pH ranges and high temperatures associated with the process of manufacturing gummy vitamins. • Drum-to-Hopper Blends – Complete blends of active ingredients, binders and excipients such as fillers, disintegrants and lubricants are required in manufacturing high-quality tablets. There is no need to preprocess Watson’s drum-to-hopper blends before manufacture of the finished tablets. Cost Reduction: By providing a ready-to-use

drum-to-hopper blend, Watson can reduce labor costs substantially by eliminating preprocessing in our customers’ facilities. This frees up equipment, prevents production delays and reduces labor and equipment running costs. Quality Assurance (QA): By providing a complete certificate of analysis (CoA) with every lot shipped, Watson can reduce our customers’ in-house quality control (QC) processes. Pre-shipment samples can also be arranged by customer request. Physical Specifications: Watson’s strict physical specifications ensure uniform particle size distribution, good flowabiltity and high bulk density. • Tablet Identification – Edible Glitter™ can be effective in helping consumers identify tablets that would otherwise look similar. The Edible Glitter creates a unique appearance in the tablet. In order to make Edible Glitter suitable for use in tablets, a new formulation now called DC Edible Glitter™ was developed; it will not affect tablet hardness or friability or cause capping. DC Edible Glitter was specialty formulated for the tableting process and will not negatively impact the qualities of the finished tablet. • Spray Drying – Watson produces a full line of industry standard spray-dried ingredients. We feel strongly that customized approaches can often yield the best performance in the end product. For this reason, roughly half of the spray-dried products we manufacture are custom products and made for a singular product application. Spray drying results in free-flowing powers which are stabilized for shelf life. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? Healthy lifestyle, better awareness of nutrients, i.e., the nutrients of concern identified in the 2015 dietary guidelines and sports nutrition trends. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? Watson brings together innovation and technology to overcome challenges and addresses consumer needs. We enable our customers to create the products of the future, fulfill untapped consumer needs and build new markets. We support our customers and the industry in fostering trust, transparency and integrity.

SuppySide West What’s Hot Digital Issue Q&A: 1. What is the biggest advancement your company has achieved in the past year, and how does that benefit your customers? A peer-reviewed clinical study was published in 2016 that reported functional data showing our elevATP® ingredient can help increase strength, power and performance in resistance-trained athletes. Prior to this, we had generated solid clinical data showing elevATP could increase mitochondrial ATP levels in serum, as well as in muscle. Our customers view functional outcomes as a gold standard, and having the new functional data was essential in order for Health Canada to approve elevATP as a medicinal ingredient. 2. What products/services are you showcasing at SupplySide West 2016 and, what problem or challenge are you seeking to help attendees solve? FutureCeuticals’ organic whole food ingredients, customized blends and functional ingredients supported by published peer-reviewed science are our areas of heaviest emphasis. We have a unique ability to navigate today’s difficult regulatory and quality environments by being adaptable. Also, we are constantly ramping-up our capabilities to grow, manufacture, customize and develop world-class ingredients for our partners. Customization is key, and delivering a simple, transparent supply chain based on documentable quality must always be a given. 3. What trends are driving demand for your products/services? We are seeing tremendous opportunity in the organic whole foods arena, as well as in the sports nutrition sector. Because we have been growing organic foods since 1856, and then processing them in-house for the better part of 40 years, we think we have a pretty good grasp of what it takes to deliver impeccable quality and to make the supply chain easy for our clients.

A great portion of the clinical work on our patented and trademarked ingredients centers around functional outcomes that tend to support sports nutrition claims and delivery formats. Much of what we do is developed on a customized basis for our clients, whether it is functional intellectual property (IP), blends, fermentation, product development or a combination of all of these. In this regard, the organic and sport nutrition movements are 100 percent in our wheelhouse. 4. What is your brand story, and how can your story help your customers better market their products? FutureCeuticals delivers on the promise of a simplified supply chain supported by safety, transparency, quality, customization and science. With a 160-year history in organic farming, we are immersed in the supply chain and hold our farming partners to the same standard to which we hold ourselves. We provide clinical support for our customers’ claims, and help develop world-class products, whether in a lead or supportive role. Our strength is supply chain agility and material customization, and our partners confidently rely upon us to support their commitment to quality.
