Voi, che sapete from Le Nozze di Figaro W A Mozart (1756-1791)

Isabella Diffenderffer

Cherubino is a teenage page boy in love with just about every woman he lays eyes upon He is wholly fascinated with the ups and downs that his newfound feelings bring, so he seeks advice from the Countess and Susanna, women with whom he is deeply in love

Voi che sapete che cosa è amor, You ladies who know what love is, donne, vedete s'io l'ho nel cor. See if it is what I have in my heart.

Quello ch'io provo vi ridirò,

All that I feel I will explain; è per me nuovo, capir nol so Since it is new to me, I don't understand it

Sento un affetto pien di desir, I have a feeling full of desire, ch'ora è diletto, ch'ora è martir

Which now is pleasure, now is torment Gelo e poi sento l'alma avvampar, I freeze, then I feel my spirit all ablaze, e in un momento torno a gelar And the next moment I turn again to ice

Ricerco un bene fuori di me, I seek a treasure outside of myself; non so chi'l tiene, non so cos'è. I know not who holds it nor what it is. Sospiro e gemo senza voler, I sigh and I groan without wishing to, palpito e tremo senza saper. I flutter and tremble without knowing why. Non trovo pace notte né dì, I find no peace by night or day, ma pur mi piace languir così. But yet to languish thus is sheer delight.

Voi che sapete che cosa è amor, You ladies Who know what love is, donne, vedete s'io l'ho nel cor

See if it is what I have in my heart

¿Dónde vas Alfonso Doce?

Where are you going, Alfonso Doce? ¿Dónde vas, triste de tí?

Where are you going so sad? Voy en busca de Mercedes

I go in search of Mercedes, que hace tiempo no la ví

Who I have not seen for some time

Tu Mercedes se va se ha muerto

Your Mercedes has died Muerta está que yo la ví; She is dead--I saw cuatro Duques la llevaban Four dukes carry her por las calles de Madrid. Through the streets of Madrid

Los faroles de Palacio

The lanterns of the palace ya no quieren alunbrar

Are not lit porque se ha muerto Mercedes

Because Mercedes has died y luto quieren guardar And all are in mourning

C t C i

This tune that obsesses me day and night

This tune that wasn’t written today

Padam, padam, padam

Il arrive en courant derrière moi

Padam, padam, padam

Il me fait le coup du: Souviens-toi ?

Padam, padam, padam

Mes vingt ans font battre tambour

Je vois s'entrebattre des gestes

Toute la comédie des amours

Sur cet air qui va toujours

Padam, padam, padam

Des Je T'Aime de quatorze juillet

Padam, padam, padam

Des Toujours qu'on achète au rabais

Padam, padam, padam

It comes from as far as I come

Brought by 100,000 musicians

One day this tune will drive me crazy

One hundred times I wanted to say why

But it interrupted me

It always speaks before me

And its voice covers my voice

Padam, padam, padam

It comes running behind me

Padam, padam, padam

It uses the old trick – remember

Padam, padam, padam

It’s a tune that points to me

And I drag behind myself like a silly mistake

This tune that knows everything by heart

It says: Recall your lovers

Recall since it’s your turn

There’s no reason for you not to cry

With your leftover memories

And me, I see again what remains

My twenty years have the drum beating

I see movements fighting each other

The entire comedy of lovers

On this tune that always goes (like)

Padam, padam, padam

“I love yous ” from the 14th of July

Padam, padam, padam

Some forevers bought on the cheap

Padam, padam, pada

Stacks of 'will you's in bundles

And all that just to fall right at the street corner

On the tune that recognized me

Listen to the ruckus it does to me

As if all of my past was parading

You have to keep some sadness for after

I have an entire solfeggio on this beating tune

Which beats like a heart made of wood

If I turn, looking back I can see far away furusato ga mieru the hometown that I loved long ago

Dekoboko michi ya

Roads that wind and twist in every way, magarikunetta michi

Bumpy roads that have seen too many days

Chizu sae nai

With no map to guide us, sore mo mata jinsei every path we cross in our lives.

Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni

Ah, like the flow of a river, yuruyaka ni Gently the long years pass by, Ikutsu mo jidai wa sugite

Ah, just like the flow of a river, Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni tomedonaku The endless sky Sora ga tasogare ni somaru dake Is colored by the setting sun

Ikiru koto wa tabi suru koto

To live is to travel owari no nai kono michi

On this road with no end Ai suru hito soba ni tsurete

With loved ones by our side yume sagashinagara We search for our dreams

Ame ni furarete

Even when it rains nukarunda michi de mo

And the road is drenched itsuka wa mata

There will come a time When the sun will shine again.

Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni

Ah, like the flow of a river, odayaka ni Calmly

Kono mi wo makasete itai

Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni utsuriyuku

I will give up this body of mine

Ah, like the flow of a river, coming and going Kisetsu yukidoke wo Machinagara

While waiting for the seasonal thaw

Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni

Ah, like the flow of a river odayaka ni calmly

Kono mi wo makasete itai

Aa kawa no nagare no yō ni

I want this body to be entrusted

Ah, like the flow of a river itsu made mo forever

Aoi seseragi wo kikinagara while listening to the blue stream
