The National Videogame Museum in Frisco features interactive exhibits and educational programs to preserve and showcase the history and culture of video games.
Arlington: Sin City
The Top O’ Hill Terrace began in the 1920s as a tea room and restaurant, but within ten years and the coming of Prohibition, the building provided cover for an illegal casino and speakeasy built below ground, complete with tunnels through which patrons could flee from police raids. A crusading preacher finally got this den of iniquity shut down in the 1950s. A small museum at the location (now on the grounds of Arlington Baptist University) recalls its sinful past.
A Mammoth Find
Say Cheese
In 2000, Stuart and Connie Veldhuizen, along with their seven children, began a family farmstead cheesemaking operation with 20 baby calves. Today, four generations of the family are involved in the production of Veldhuizen Cheese, which offers tours of their Dublin farm, as well as over 20 varieties of artisan raw milk cheeses.
In 1978, two young men were searching for arrowheads on a farm near the Bosque River and found a large bone. A professor at nearby Baylor University identified it as from a Columbian Mammoth, and excavation was begun, unearthing no less than 16 mammoths in the next 12 years. Today the site is the Waco Mammoth National Monument, offering guided tours and educational exhibits.

The Original Family Campground, Oakdale opened in 1925, built around the 330,000-gallon Oakdale Plunge, then the largest swimming pool in Texas. Oakdale is one of the only private RV parks in the country listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Flower Mound, Texas, gets its name from a 12.5-acre mound in the center of town, where wildflowers grow. Two German men met under an oak tree on Quihi Creek in May, 1890 to organize the Quihi Schuetzen Verein (shooting club) to defend against Indian attacks. Now called the Quihi Gun Club, it’s one of the oldest social clubs in the country. Dances are still held every 2nd and 4th Saturday, welcoming visitors from all over the world.

First opened as as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the old Hidalgo County jail, the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg has grown to become an important regional presence. Remembering Goliad
The annual Goliad Massacre and Living History Program takes place in March on the historic grounds of Presidio La Bahia, and features a reenactment of the 1836 Battle of Coleto Creek.
Cornered by Mexican army troops, James Fannin’s Texans held off three separate charges until their eventual surrender the next morning. Later the captives were marched to Goliad and shot on the orders of Santa Anna. Cries of “Remember Goliad” were heard throughout the duration of the Texas War of Independence.
