New York-based Utopia Bagels recently partnered with MID-Ship Marine and Watco Logistics to move their bagels internationally to London.

Watco Logistics, MID-Ship Marine Connect to Get NYC Bagels to London

When an exciting opportunity came that would involve his company’s first international shipment, the co-owner of an acclaimed New York City bagel company found trusty partners in MID-Ship Marine and Watco Logistics.

Utopia Bagels, based in Queens, was invited to operate temporarily as a guest of London street vendor Truffle Burger. For four weeks, Utopia was to occupy the gourmet burger business’ pop-up space next to its regular spot on the south bank of the River Thames. Four weeks’ worth of bagels? That’s 24,000 of the ring-shaped rolls.

It was a big step, but fortunately for Utopia’s Jesse Spellman, he knew where to start. He reached out to longtime friend Chris D’Auria, an operations manager for MID-Ship Marine in Port Washington, New York.

“Jesse knows what I do,” D’Auria said. “But because we specialize in dry bulk commodities, we’ll handle special projects like this through our network of people and resources.” Those resources include the Watco Logistics Ocean & Air (international) division. “We knew they were well-equipped to handle the unique project of transporting 24,000 bagels on a transatlantic voyage.”

Davis Nunneley, Watco’s manager of international, helped spearhead the bagel project. “Once we knew the stakeholders,” he said, “it was kind of just guiding the customer getting into a new market. Utopia Bagels had never shipped overseas, and we were kind of their right arm.” Still, Nunneley said that since his group’s typical shipments are industrial materials “without a shelf-life,” he was a bit nervous about the food-grade product. But he relied on Watco Logistics team members like Cameron Bradley, general manager, who assisted with locating the necessary cold-storage transloading option.

Using its in-house delivery operation, Utopia sent 10 pallets of frozen bagels from a Queens warehouse to the transloader. They were responsible for packing 400 bagel-filled boxes in a refrigerated container (maintaining the necessary 10-degree temperature) with the proper blocking and bracing to prevent shifting during transit. The container was put aboard a vessel that left port July 7.

Tracking the shipment was the job of Watco Supply Chain Coordinator Erica Benson. “My part was being the ‘eyes on the water,’” she said. “I kept track of the shipment’s progress, watching for updates, and made sure the customer always knew exactly where their cargo was and when it was expected to arrive at Southampton Port.”

The cargo arrived July 20. The next day, Invictus Global Logistics delivered the bagels to the pop-up space. “They are the ones who ensured customs and the final-mile delivery of these bagels went smoothly,” said Nunneley.

Utopia operated the short-term London storefront July 24 through August 24. They served their signature hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagels with plain or scallion cream cheese, butter, and jam. Also on the menu: Utopia Bagels sandwiches like the pastrami-packed New Yorker or the Worth It, with salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers between bagel buns.

Spellman reflected on the venture with satisfaction.

“It was great. Everything was smooth. It was incredible working with Davis and Chris and such an experienced team, and we’d love to do more business with Watco just based off the experience we had.”

Austin Western Railroad Hosts Interns

A Watco collaboration with a youth employment pilot program has created a real-world opportunity for two Texas high school graduates to learn about railroading.

Abel Ceballos and Curtis Myles III came on board August 11 at the Austin Western Railroad (AWRR). They are part of The Georgetown Project out of Georgetown, Texas, only about 30 miles from Austin. The project’s new Compass pilot program is partnering with area businesses to provide paid internships.

In May, Georgetown Summer Youth Employment Coordinator Vanessa Calabaza contacted AWRR General Manager Anthony Hoyte Jr., who enlisted People Services Manager Angie Bunker to help vet the opportunity. She sent some job descriptions to Calabaza, who identified the two intern candidates. Bunker worked closely with the AWRR team and Watco Safety and Legal departments to solidify the arrangement.

The young men started their eight-week internships August 11 with onboarding that included Railroading 101 — 15 computer-based training courses that introduced them to the basics of freight railroading. They then moved into field experience with peer trainers.

“We put our trust in the AWRR peer trainers to make them familiar with ‘day in and day out,’ said Assistant General Manager Chase Upchurch, who’s overseeing Ceballos’ experience. As a conductor intern, Ceballos “is starting off observing and will work his way into doing some of the work himself while being supervised by a peer trainer. He’ll be exposed to switching, the communication between a conductor and his dispatcher, and learning about train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations.”

Ceballos said he knew little to nothing about railroading before starting his internship.

“What interested me is knowing so little, I wanted to know the details. As of right now, I’ve learned a lot. Just being able to be in the cab and watch how the engineer and conductor work together has taught me a lot.”

Myles is studying at a trade school to be a diesel mechanic. He said that while it was his first time to work on heavy-duty vehicles, he sees similarities between being a diesel mechanic and a locomotive mechanic. “A bolt is a bolt, and an oil change is an oil change,” he said. “The big difference is safety.”

Chief Mechanical Office Adam Pope echoed the emphasis on safety. “Curtis has been working with one of our peer trainers who is helping him to understand the procedures and processes we take to ensure the safety of ourselves and our team members. He is learning about situational awareness, (Federal Railroad Administration) inspections, and blue flag protection, as well as things like proper (personal protective equipment) to wear and proper use of tools.”

Both Bunker and Hoyte said they thought the program could continue in the long term. “We’ve had the chance to bring on two young men, and both are off to a great start,” said Hoyte. “They’re respectful, eager to learn, and showing a lot of promise. I really think this program and our company are a good match, and I look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.”

Ferndale Team Achieves Milestones

October marks 11 years since Watco’s Ferndale Dedicated Terminal started working on-site for a customer, switching and unloading railcars. The Washington-based terminal recognized this anniversary, along with recently achieving a team performance milestone, with a barbecue lunch last month. Additionally last December, the Ferndale team celebrated a two-year safety milestone.

The team’s commitment to safely improving every day recently caught the attention of a senior inspector, who was on-site to do a federal and state inspection. The inspector was overheard saying, “Watco’s training is top-notch. You will not find a better operation. These guys do a great job.”

Terminal Manager Thomas Frey agrees. He said, “We’re thankful for the trust the customer and those who regulate our operations have in us. At Ferndale, our goal is to always meet their expectations and to continue to earn and honor their trust.”

Pictured are some of the team members at the Ferndale Dedicated Terminal. From left to right: Robert Slayer, John Baker, Dylan Heiselman, Darrion Garcia, Andy Ross, Darren Rodenberger, Aaron Sessions, Markus Hager, Tyler Sessions, and Rick Bost.

From Breast Cancer Diagnosis to Recovery, Team Member Shares Her Story

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime according to the American Cancer Society. It’s a statistic no one wants to be part of but one that Watco team member Claudia Gedeon found herself facing in 2023.

Gedeon is a logistics supervisor at MID-Ship Logistics in Port Washington, New York. Since turning 40, she’s had a mammogram every year, with each scan showing no signs of cancer.

All that changed a few months after her mammogram in 2023. That’s when she first noticed that her left breast looked different. What followed next was a year-long battle with breast cancer, beginning with a double mastectomy and followed by 32 sessions of radiation.

Gedeon was at the end of her treatment and beginning the reconstructive process in the summer of 2024 when Watco announced a new benefit called the Clear Cancer Program from Private Health Management (PHM). This free benefit offers comprehensive cancer support for team members and their family members enrolled in a Watco health plan.

She said, “I connected with them over Zoom. They reviewed my charts and validated what my physicians had told me. They also went through my medication list and explained what each one is used for and how it’s helping me.”

In addition to offering support from a personal care team, the PHM Clear Cancer Program helps diagnosed team members determine the right treatment plan, provides the latest information on new treatments, and assists with scheduling appointments.

Gedeon said, “It’s a great resource. My care team was very detailed, patient, and told it to me in a way that I could easily understand.”

And in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gedeon has one piece of advice for all women: Get tested. She said: “Make sure to do self-exams, and when you turn 40, start getting annual mammograms. It might save your life.”

How to Be Aware and Secure in Cyberspace

Staying one step ahead of the bad guys is the business of Gregg Robbins, Watco AVP of IT Security Services.

Robbins recently returned from the Black Hat USA conference designed to teach the good guys the latest tricks of hackers and how to defend against them. He has advice for team members about protection against cyberattacks — a timely topic for October, which is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Some of the information isn’t new, but it remains relevant for Watco team members in our jobs and personal lives.

More Advanced and Still the Same

While Robbins said they covered many advanced techniques at the conference, for the most part, the tried-and-true methods are still most effective for hackers. Most high-profile breaches come down to either someone in the organization clicking a malicious link in an email or being called by someone claiming to be from IT and gaining access. Robbins said the recent Aflac data breach was caused when an attacker pretended to be from the company’s IT department and was given access to their systems.

Remember, if you are not sure about the request or that the caller is really from our IT staff, ask the caller for their extension or department and their name again and then tell them you will call them back using the published number for our IT team. This minor inconvenience will keep our company safe. If they are really with Watco IT, they will understand and not be troubled by the minor delay.

Scams and Fraud Prevention

Current scams include fraudulent callers who pretend to be from banks, texts claiming unpaid tolls, and fake invoices for expiring antivirus software. Robbins says their common thread is their sense of urgency. He recommends skepticism when dealing with someone you’ve never met. “Don’t go into immediate ‘let’s just fix this problem’ mode. If it is a caller, tell them you will call them back using a

published number, not the one they called from. If it is a text or e-mail, contact them with published numbers, not just the ones referenced in the text or email.”

Identity Theft and Data Breaches

Robbins said most people’s personal information has been leaked in data breaches. It is more important than ever to check your personal credit report annually to spot credit cards and accounts that have been fraudulently opened in your name. If you receive bank statements or charge statements for accounts that you have not opened, then take these seriously and make sure someone has not opened an account in your name. Robbins said that he personally has had multiple charge cards and bank accounts opened in his name over the years. Stay vigilant and use your free annual credit report from each credit bureau like Equifax or TransUnion to check at least annually to make sure this has not happened to you.

AI and Phishing

Artificial intelligence has led to more sophisticated spam emails, as referenced in a Cybersecurity Tips email Robbins sent recently to Watco team members. “AI is a big problem,” says Robbins. “We’re getting more and more spam that looks very convincing.” He said that nowadays, AI can generate more tailored and realistic messages due to its awareness of specific details about the target. Robbins says that as always, slow down and be a little bit more skeptical if the email request is very unusual or if it conveys a real sense of urgency. No matter how well the AI content is written, these two items are almost always a part of a malicious email. He cautions that while the Watco culture means “helpful is in our DNA,” a lot of people want to take advantage of that mentality.

Unfortunately, team members can continue to expect hackers to challenge our personal and professional data security. But we also can count on the efforts of Robbins and others on the Watco Cybersecurity team as they work to protect us.

Watco Australia Recognized for Customer Service

Watco Australia recently was named a finalist for the 2025 Australasian Rail Industry Customer Service Excellence Award for its achievements with BlueScope Steel at Port Kembla in New South Wales.

The finalists, composed of businesses in Australia and New Zealand, were determined by the Australasian Railway Association. Watco Australia is among seven companies recognized in the Customer Service Excellence category.

A Watco Australia team serves BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks, Australia’s largest manufacturer of flat steel. The team was recognized for boosting internal steel coil transfer capacity and consistently exceeding daily shunting requirements — often doubling them — by leveraging digital twin modeling to expand the plant’s overall shunting (switching) capacity. The team’s recognition also came from having refurbished diesel locomotives to meet increased demand; launching a collaborative safety awareness campaign to reduce pedestrian and vehicle incidents at the factory; and similar accomplishments.

Besides operating the BlueScope Port Kembla train services in New South Wales, Watco Australia handles bulk grain export rail services in Queensland and is the major rail provider of live cattle transport there. The company’s operations in Western Australia include a major intermodal rail container terminal at the Port of Fremantle and inland transfer facilities.

Ann Arbor Spreads Rail Safety Message

The Ann Arbor Railroad (AA) brought their whole community together to learn about rail safety for Operation Lifesaver’s See Tracks? Think Train!® Week 2025.

The safety week ran September 15-21 this year and the AA hosted three events, bringing community members, first responders, elected officials, and government agencies together to spread the word and educate the residents of Ann Arbor and Dundee, Michigan about rail safety.

“Our team was invited to participate at a kickoff event in Ann Arbor,” said Ian Gray, trainmaster. “From there, our TSIC (Team Safety & Improvement Committee) thought, ‘what more can we do?’ We have a great team and they really stepped up.”

The first event was held adjacent to the University of Michigan’s campus, where the AA moves freight daily. Operation Lifesaver (OLI) volunteers coordinated the event, which included Michigan State Police, Ann Arbor fire and police departments, the university police, Canadian National Railway Police, Michigan Department of Transportation, the Federal Railroad Administration, and state representative Jennifer Conlin. About 50 people attended the event and the AA team provided train rides to their bridge over the Huron River.

On Tuesday, Lead Car Repairmen John Weber and Donnie Castro, Chief Mechanical Officer Matt Sprayberry, Locomotive Mechanic Dalton Parent, Equipment Mechanic Chris Hayes, and Prep Crew Leadman Mark Bourbina hosted eight members of the Dundee Fire Department at the depot. This included a classroom session covering general rail safety, hazards to watch for during incidents,

and train components. Then, they got hands-on experience with railcars and a locomotive in the yard.

“We showed them all the electrical components and the underbody of the locomotive, things to avoid, and where to cut if they have to do an extraction,” Gray said. “They even practiced an extraction through the cab window. The chief and training officer both came. They want to help us bring in other local departments and to make this part of standard training for new cadets.”

The final event was held in collaboration with OLI volunteers and the Dundee police. An AA locomotive blocked a crossing for about three minutes at a time, while officers, volunteers, and AA team members handed out rail safety pamphlets and OLI gear to drivers.

“About 95% of people were open to it. Someone even got out of their vehicle to take a photo with one of our team members, “Gray said. “Some of the people who live near the tracks came to see what we were doing. We learned we have fans all the way in Colorado. It was great to not just be the noisy neighbor and make connections with the community.”

Gray says the TSIC team is already coming up with ideas for next year. They’re also working to coordinate training, so team members can become OLI volunteers.“They want to get more engaged with the communities we serve,” Gray said. “Rail safety isn’t just this one week. Once they are authorized, we can share this message at events and in schools year-round.”

Watco Welcomes 47th Railroad

On Oct. 1, the Great Lakes Central Railroad (GLC) started

The 54-member GLC team serves customers across many industries like agriculture, plastics, and oil and gas. The rail line stretches from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to northern Michigan including Cadillac, Thompsonville, Traverse City, and Petoskey.

“The team members at the GLC are a natural fit for Watco,” said Keith Collier, vice president of operations. “They share Watco’s priorities: value the customers, value each other, and safely improve every day. It’s a match made in heaven.”
