CELEBRATE PURIM WITH
What is Purim? The Jewish holiday of Purim is Judaism's carnival holiday, and is all about hidden identities, reversal of fate, and bravery in the face of danger. The story of Purim takes place in ancient Persia. There is a plot in the royal cabinet to wipe out the Jews from the kingdom. The evil scheme is singlehandedly defeated by Queen Esther, who (spoiler alert!) turns out to be secretly Jewish! We read the story of Purim in a special scroll called Megilat Esther (The Book of Esther) which comes in the Writings section of the Hebrew Bible. The Book of Esther is one of the only texts in the Hebrew Bible where you won't find the name of the Divine. You can read the whole book (yes, the whole thing, but it's a quick read!) here.
Bringing the Purim Spirit to Your Shabbat Table We love Purim, because it's all about JOY — one of our core values. We’re literally commanded to increase joy on Purim and for the entire Hebrew month of Adar (when Purim happens). So, the best way to celebrate Purim is bringing in the most joy for you and your community! Here's some other Purim inspo: Read Megilat Esther or stage a shpiel (a humorous and sometimes shady play or skit) inspired by the story of Purim and maybe current events. Invite your guests to put on their own shpiel or play a game of charades.
