2022 FIM ISDE - UPDATE
courtesy of FIM
Ahead of the soon to be announced opening of the entries for the 2022 FIM International Six Days of Enduro (ISDE) that will be held at Puy en Velay, France from Monday 29 August to Saturday
3 September, the Organizing Committee and representatives from the FIM recently met with the elected representatives of the local authorities of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Haute-Loire Department, the Agglomeration and the City of Le Puy en Velay and its Tourist Office.
The latter of these, the City of Puy en Velay Tourist Office, is an important ISDE partner and will manage the accommodation booking service on behalf of the organizing committee.
In front of the assembled local media, the elected officials confirmed and reinforced their support for the 96th edition of the ISDE, and the importance of the event to the region especially regarding the following key considerations:
The visibility and credibility of hosting an international competition with 650 entrants, and over 3000 people involved from more than 30 different nations.
The direct and positive local economic impact generated by the event, which is estimated to exceed €3.5 ($3.9) million, not including the financial impact of the visiting spectators.
The sustainable element of the event, in particular its environmental compatibility that
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 12 WORLD NEWS
will see the organization maintain and restore – post event – where necessary over 600km of trails whilst ensuring the protection of sensitive areas nearby.
The wider environmental initiatives that will be included as part of the event, and that will be communicated in more detail in due course.
It is a historic region for Enduro in France, convinced of the positive impact of the sporting competition and the extent of the event that is set to welcome all participants.
The FIM, the FFM and the Organizing Committee would like to warmly thank the local authorities for their commitment and their support, without which it would simply not be possible to organize the 96th edition of the ISDE in France, at Le Puy en Velay, a first for the hosting City and Agglomeration.

RED BULL KTM FACTORY RACING GET A FIERY SPARK BY BRISK FOR 2022
courtesy of KTM
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing have been able to enhance development of their motocross and enduro race engines for 2022 thanks to a collaborative new alliance with BRISK. The Czech company, established in 1935 and based in Tábor, south of Prague have enormous specialist knowledge of their core product as well as acute experience in high-level motorsports, particularly offroad motorcycling.
The union of KTM and BRISK will bring a further competitive benefit to the race teams as they chase spoils in the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship and the divisions of the FIM Enduro World Championship as well as signature events such as the Motocross of Nations and ISDE; two races with almost 200 years of existence between them.
BRISK’s potency flows from their experience and use of the best materials as well as their adaptability and rapid response to provide tailormade solutions for racing purposes. These advantages sync perfectly with KTM’s goal to optimize their engine performance to operate at the peak of their chosen disciplines.
MXGP and Enduro provide ideal testing and proving grounds for technology thanks to the demands on the hardware right through the rev range as well as mileage and changing climates and conditions.
KTM and BRISK have already been working together for a year, where the cooperation for R&D in the race department has delivered effective and positive results.
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 14 WORLD NEWS
OFFROAD: “Officially partnering with BRISK gives us another key component in our racing program for next season. They have great know-how and respond to our needs with their customized solutions. They can turn around product and ideas quickly from their in-house resources and, importantly, they have a long history in racing, so they know our demands for top-level sport. Manufacturing their spark plugs only a few 100kms away from the race department HQ is another advantage we cannot ignore!”
HANA
COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR: “Our dream and goal was to partner one of the most successful motorcycle sports brands - KTM - and to be at the top of various championships. We are sure that our mutual partnership will work very well as it is built on respect and a great passion for this glorious sport.”

Trials Stuff Tested
words by JASON WRIGHT
NILS CLUTCH TRIAL TRANSMISSION OIL
Yup, I am going there, we are talking about oil. First off, you can run just about any oil in a 2 stroke and it will work reasonably well. Nils Clutch Trial takes it to another level. Let me introduce you to the company, in case you have not heard of them.
Nils has been making oils for motorcycles since 1971. With over 50 years of experience, they have a wide variety of lubricants to fit almost any need. Only recently have their products been available in the United States.
I decided to give Nils Clutch Trial a try when I was having some slight clutch dragging. I had tried many of the higher end oils and even some of the old stand bys, like ATF. Upon pouring in the Nils, I could see that its behavior was different. Drips of the oil bounce like nothing I had seen before.
Starting the bike, it is typical of a trials bike to have a lot of clutch
drag when the transmission oil is cold. With the Nils, this was noticeably reduced. Once warmed up, the clutch drag problem was solved. The engagement of the clutch is similar to other higher end oils: nice and predictable. The shifter moves easily, from gear to gear, with no false neutrals.
I have run several quarts of this oil through my bike, over the last year, and am happy with the results. Admittedly, I never ran the oil for an excessive amount of time, but it always came out very clean looking and never smelled burnt like some lesser oils do.
If you are looking for less clutch drag and smoother shifting, trying a different oil is the easiest and cheapest thing you can do. The Nils Clutch Trial is worth taking a look at.
In the US, it is available from Abad Trials at www.AbadTrials.com.

HEBO PRO 20 PANTS AND JERSEY
photos by APRIL O'NEAL & MEREDITH BLUMHORST
I know what you are thinking, “I am not ready to go full on Lycra trials pants. I am in this sport just for fun.” Well, that is what I thought for a long time. Stick with me for a minute.
My big requirement of trials pants is good knee/shin protection. It is rare to see this talked about in the descriptions on trials pants. I also wanted something that was going to allow heat to escape. I had similar heat requirements of the jersey.
The pants come with EN16211 certified knee pads. These are similar to D30 knee pads. They are soft and flexible but when struck, they become firm and do a great job at protecting from impacts. The knee pads stay in place and do not shift around. These pants have held up great through a year of riding and show no signs of wear. They have slid across just about any surface imaginable. The material breathes very well and does a great job of keeping me cool. The fit is very comfortable, not snug like wearing bicycle shorts. They have a bit of room. The only downside to the pants is the only pocket is on the small side and does not fit a smartphone well.
The jersey is made from a quick dry polyester. It does a great job of breathing well and never feels wet. It has also held up to many crashes
without showing any wear. One downside to the color I picked. The back of the jersey is all black so it can be warm when standing in line for a section in the desert sun of the southwest.
The Hebo Pro 20 pants and jersey are a great investment and should last through many seasons of riding. As with many European brands, buy one size larger than you normally wear.

The KTM 12eDRIVE is the ideal starter for rapidly changing children. Featuring 12” wheels with pneumatic tires and a low 33 cm seat height, it allows riders to learn to push or coast with confidence before graduating to the 3-level powered mode. The bike has a high-output motor that is slightly more powerful than its smaller brother. It is fitted with larger 16” wheels and provides an increased 43cm seat height.
Both models offer quick charging and roughly 30 - 60 minutes of run-time for an exceptional amount of fun, along with hours of hand-eye coordination and outdoor exercise. NORTHEAST 24-HR RACE
DATE LOCATION July 16, 2016
If a two-hour hare scramble just doesn’t seem like enough seat time, why not try 24 hours? Each year Arcadia Bark Busters hosts the Northeast 24 Hour Challenge where hundreds of teams set out for 24 hours of non-stop racing. Teams can register in different classes such as the “team class” which allows up to six riders, the “duo” class for two riders, and the bravest group of them all, the “ironman/ironwomen” class where riders take on the entire 24 hours by themselves. The course
Tall Pines, NY
is designed to be easy, but it is the duration of the event takes care of the difficulty factor. In addition, the weeks of planning and coordination required with your team to prepare for the event is a logistical challenge of its own. Lighting setups and having electricity throughout the night requires strategic planning and organization among teams. The experience to complete one of these races is well worth it, and I recommend anyone who hasn’t tried a 24-hour race to do so.

Ep 103: Sean Bird
Flying high with current Canadian champ
Today we are flying high with the birdman. Sean Bird is Canada's current champion also does a lot of freestyle work with shows and previous work with the Marvel Universe live & Freestyle Kings.
We chat with Sean about where it all started, and he opens up about the pitfalls of going up a grade before you were really ready.
Sean then had a break from the sport while he focused on his career, but as so often is the story we hear about how he came back and the generosity of a rider to simply give him his bike to ride to help Sean recapture the bug.
Since then Sean has been busy evolving into a freestyle rider and shows with former guest Sam King through Ride the Vibe, travelled to China for work with Freestyle Kinds and as mentioned the Marvel universe Live before COVID shut it down.
It was a treat to speak with Sam, and here about his plans for the TdN and the year ahead and how he balances training for events vs freestyle shows.
Ladies and gentleman I give you my chat with the Canadian Champ: Sean Bird.

The Red Bull Override is a Hard Enduro event that showcases what Texas has to offer to racers looking for more than a traditional off-road challenge. Though the event is in its third year, racers and spectators were treated to a new venue and format for this year’s three day extravaganza. We also saw what we have always wanted to see when it comes to Hard Enduro support: vendors from outside of the industry.
The Override weekend was partnered up with the Texas 4 Fest to bring spectators, and off-road enthusiasts, to the front door of Jeep and Ram Trucks. Each brand had experiences and ride-alongs that showcased how off-road capable their vehicles are, nudging the more two-wheeled centric crowd to take a second look at how they might fill their garage.
The racing that took place over Saturday and Sunday had the expected level of intensity we would anticipate from the caliber of racers lined up. The format and course were where expectations may not have been met. Hard Enduro racers are continuing to evolve every year, requiring the races and race promoters to evolve with them. They are seeking a type of challenge that isn’t just a “tough enduro“. They
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 66
want puzzles that they have to piece together as they nimbly crawl their way through sections some would fear walking. The course laid out at the Rally Ready Driving School didn’t fit the needs of the worlds best. I do believe the amateurs had a challenging race course, and the idea of Pro Only Override sections helped negate bottlenecks that plague most Hard Enduro events.
Mario Roman showcased why he is one of the worlds best Hard Enduro racers. During the Saturday two hour qualification race, he bid his time behind Ryder Leblond. Once Lebond made a mistake, Roman took the lead and continued to widen the gap lap after lap.
The impressive moment during the night race was from Ryan Sipes. Sipes went down just after the start in the Endurocross section. By the time he got going, he was in last place. He put his motocross skills to good use in the grass track sections, passing all the way to third place.
The Sunday one hour final saw Mario Roman lead from start to finish on his Factory Sherco 300.
VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - FEBRUARY 2022 // PAGE 67
The racers were bunched up on the first obstacle, due to Roman blocking the course. Once he got moving, it opened the path for everyone to fall in line. Ryder Leblond held second place the entire hour, putting his DRT Husqvarna 300 second on the podium.
Pat Smage
stayed upright enough to claim third place on his FactoryONE Sherco 300.
I hope we see the Red Bull Override come back for a fourth year. I personally like the original 6 hour format better, the long time on the bike and riding into the night. It adds another layer, and style, to the different Hard Enduro events taking shape around the world. I’m up
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 68
in the air about Rally Ready Ranch as the venue. I just don’t think it has the terrain needed to challenge the worlds best Hard Enduro racers, but for the concept of the weekend’s event, its an amazing location.

BARCELONA
November 21, 2021
The Palau Sant Jordi has once again crowned Toni Bou (Montesa) as the best rider in trial history. The Montesa rider, despite having a difficult start to the first lap and in which he was relegated to second position, did not fail in the decisive moments. The "cathedral" of indoor trial has experienced an extremely exciting afternoon full of surprises.
The first lap knocked out outstanding riders such as Jeroni Fajardo (five podiums in Barcelona) or Jorge Casales (third here last year), as well as the British and newcomer at the Palau Sant Jordi, Toby Martyn. The best on this first

round was Jaime Busto (Vertigo), who finished ahead of Toni Bou and Adam Raga. This unexpected outcome of the first round caused Bou and Raga to go head-to-head in the first heat. The expected BouRaga final duel and with a world title at stake was, therefore, ruled out. The second round heats were made up of Toni Bou, Adam Raga and Miquel Gelabert on one side and Jaime Busto, Gabriel Marcelli and Matteo Grattarola on the other. Only the best of each group could compete in the grand final.
Toni Bou did not give his rivals a chance in the second round and was able to secure his position in the final with the best score: 7
penalty points for Raga's 12 and Gelabert's 14. At that time, Bou was mathematically already the indoor trial world champion, earning his fifteenth title.
In the other heat, a surprising Gabriel Marcelli (12 points) beat Jaime Busto (13) and Grattarola (18) and got into his first final in a World X-Trial event.
The final for third place pitted Raga and Busto against one another. A failure on Busto's part earned the TRS a place in the runner's-up round. Third place for Raga in his 20th participation in Barcelona (he is the rider with the most appearances in the 44-year history of the Barcelona Indoor Trial) and world runner-up for the Ulldecona rider.
In the final, Toni Bou had no problem beating the young Gabriel Marcelli (Montesa) -12 points to 23-, thus adding his 14th victory in Barcelona (he is the most successful rider) and also his 30th world trial title. Bou has won a whopping 15 indoor World Cups and as many outdoors.
For the first time in its history Barcelona has decided the World X-Trial. With a championship reduced to two races (Andorra and Barcelona) due to the pandemic, the Palau Sant Jordi has crowned a champion.
Toni Bou was full of enthusiasm:
”I am living a dream," he said. “It
GABRIEL MARCELLI, MONTESA
was fantastic to take the victory and the title in Barcelona. Winning here is exceptional and, moreover, it is the first time that I have been crowned World Champion in Barcelona. I am very happy with my 15th world title and to have won both events.”
“I am very happy with such an exceptional result," said Marcelli. "I felt comfortable throughout the event and I tried to concentrate as much as possible at all times. Last season I was not at my best level and this is the best way to make amends. I have achieved the best result of my career and doing so in Barcelona is especially exciting.”
Adam Raga didn't hide his disappointment at not getting into the final. ”My goal today was to fight for the World Cup with Toni," he said. "I can only be disappointed in this regard. I feel in a good moment of form and I am super happy for having shown a good level and for taking the world runner-up position."

WOMEN'S TROPHY BARCELONA: GIRLS ALSO MAKE HISTORY
If the Indoor Solo Moto Trial in Barcelona was the first indoor trial held in the world in 1978, today the Palau Sant Jordi has witnessed another historic moment: the celebration of the first women's competition in this specialty.
The first Women's Trophy Barcelona has brought together the British and seven-time world champion, Emma Bristow, the Spanish Berta Abellán and Sandra Gómez, the French Naomi Monnier and the Norwegian Ingveig Häkonsen.
After going through four "natural" zones (logs and stones), the victory went to Bristow (0 points), ahead of Abellán (1) and Gómez (8). However, all of them celebrated this historic participation in an indoor event with the same joy.

MOREE'S PARADISE RACEWAY SELLERS, SOUTH CAROLINA
Johnny Girroir drew first blood in the 2022 US Sprint Enduro Series. The Coastal Racing GasGas rider took a dominating win at this weekend’s Moree’s Paradise US Sprint Enduro, round one of the series held at Moree’s Paradise Raceway in Sellers, South Carolina. It was Girroir’s maiden race in the Pro division.
Snow and freezing temperatures greeted the riders; however, the weather did not deter a large group from racing in what turned out to be a very successful and enjoyable weekend.
Girroir dominated Sunday’s action, winning all six tests, which backed up his strong performance on Saturday, where he won four of six tests.
“Everything went smoothly,” said Girroir. “I had a little crash in the last enduro test on Sunday, but I had a pretty mistake-free weekend. The woods test was kinda sketchy, so I felt more comfortable on the cross test. It got pretty gnarly out there; just mud, ruts, and roots. That really keeps you on your toes, but I felt good in both tests.”
Overall, it was good. Layne and Johnny were ripping all weekend. I wish I could beat Johnny more than one or two tests this weekend, but he had my number. He got me today like a second each test. A second here, a second there, and then three or four. They add up, and the tests are so short it’s hard to make up. It’s fun back being at a sprint race. I haven’t done it in a while, and I think I’ll probably go do more.
JOSH TOTH, PRO
- JOSH TOTH
Josh Toth was second overall, with one test win and a series of consistent second and third place test finishes. The FMF/KTM rider came to South Carolina to get in some sand riding to tune up for the new year.
“I haven’t raced in a while, and this was a last-minute decision,” said Toth. “Just trying to stay sharp on the bike. I did have expectations for myself, but no pressure. I would say I rode a little cautious. Of course, I came into the last two seasons with injuries, so I’ve been a little on the cautious side and just staying smart, really.”
Defending series champion Layne Michael had a weekend he’d rather forget. After winning the first test on Saturday, the Am Pro Yamaha rider admittedly struggled for the remainder of the day. Michael got back into the groove on Sunday, but could not stop Girroir from sweeping the day.
“I just struggled this weekend,” said Michael. “I felt like I kind of got back on track there today but in the last test I made a small mistake and crashed. I just kind of clipped a root wrong and it pitched me pretty good. Just some mental errors this weekend. Hopefully, figure that out for the next one and come back stronger for sure.”
Phoenix Honda’s Cody Barnes capitalized on a strong performance
My Phoenix Racing Honda 250 is working awesome. We're working with Ohlins this year, and their suspension has really been a big part of getting me comfortable on the bike. I’m really looking forward to the start of GNCC.
CODY BARNES, PRO2
- CODY BARNES
I think the first test I’m a little too timid and then I realize these guys just hold it wide open through there. So, I’ve got to do the same. I think my times were getting better throughout the day and a little closer to the top guys. We’ll go back to work and work on that. I’m pretty happy with my speed in the cross test. Just got to work on the woods. It was a fun weekend and a good first race in America.
- MASON SEMMENS
“First go on the new bike and everything went well,” said Devlin. “Yesterday, I was just trying to maintain on the cross test and then do the work in the enduro test where I kind of shine a little bit more. It was kind of a management day today, and then just kind of watched the times and making up when I could and be reserved when it was appropriate.”
Australian Mason Semmens made his debut ride in America and came away with seventh overall. The Trail Jesters Racing KTM rider was also fourth in the Pro 2 division.
“The sprint enduro format is definitely cool,” said Semmens. “Coming from a motocross background, the enduro test seemed tight, so it was definitely a big learning curve. My knuckles are pretty busted up, and my neck, too. The trees definitely don’t move when you run into them, but all in all it was a good learning weekend.”
Tely Racing KTM’s Liam Draper returned to racing having spent the last four months recovering from knee surgery and came away with fourth in the Pro division and eighth overall. Meanwhile, RPM Racing’s Angus Riordan of Australia was ninth overall and fifth in the Pro 2 class.
Bubz Tasha (KTM) won the Pro-Am division with a 10th overall finish.
MASON SEMMENS, PRO2
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Tayla Jones took the win in the Women’s Pro class after topping nine of the 12 tests.
“I was a little nervous about racing in the snow but it turned out to be fun,” said Jones. “I got some test wins and got settled into my new bike so all is good.”
Trail Jesters Racing KTM’s Kori Steede won three tests and was second overall in Women’s Pro. Meanwhile, Bonanza Plumbing/ GasGas/Spkye's Bikes/RG Racing’s Rachel Gutish rounded out the podium in third.
"Definitely hit-or-miss performance this weekend," said Gutish. "I haven’t had much time with the bike. We’re still doing a lot of testing. In fact, that was one of the big reasons I wanted to come here because sprint enduro serves as such a good venue for that. I really think by the time GNCC and Sumter rolls around, we’ll be good to go."
First in the 250A class was KTM upand-comer Cole Forbes, who also claimed the Top Amateur award, while James Skinner won the Open A class ahead of Tim Murphy and David Hojnowski Jr.
The US Sprint Enduro Series returns to action on February 12-13 for round two of its series at South of the Border MX in Hamer, South Carolina. The round also doubles as an ISDE Qualifier.

two days (almost) riding dirt bikes in west texas
words by BRIAN PIERCE, SEAT TIME
photos
COLE KIRKPATRICK
The terrain in West Texas is unlike any other terrain I’ve ridden on. If you could ride a dirt bike on mars, this terrain is what I would think it would be like. When you’re on top of the caprock mesas, the views stretch on for miles. When you’re below the caprock, weaving your way through overgrown ravines, it’s like entering into a new world. The best parts though are dropping off of the caprock and riding back up to the top. The rapid descents and uneven climbs require you to stay focused on the terrain so you can transition between the highs and lows of the rolling plains.
VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - FEBRUARY 2022 // PAGE 101
As a Louisiana native, my first introduction to the West Texas terrain was an eye opening experience. The speeds you can carry in the open desert terrain was something the tight piney woods did not prepare me for. As I spent years racing the TSCEC Series though, I gained some semblance of confidence jumping between high speed desert and technical rain washes.
GRINduro, Two Days on Dirt Bikes!
Having said that, the Grinduro event isn’t a race; It’s a two day guided riding weekend enjoying epic terrain, camp fires and bench racing stories with new and old riding buddies. The 2021 edition of Grinduro was the 6th iteration put on by Cole Kirkpatrick
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 102
of Gnarly Routes, and his friends and family. Not only is it a chance to push yourself on their private trails, but it’s a way to support the Kurt Caselli Foundation, as a portion of the proceeds benefit their focus of safety for riders and racers in the off-road motorcycling industry.
This weekend for me is always a chance to just get out and enjoy a chill weekend of riding my dirt bike. It’s terrain and trails I don’t normally have access to, and I get to see riding buddies that are typically enjoying their own life in their part of the world.
VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - FEBRUARY 2022 // PAGE 103
Dirt Bike Games
A big part of the Grinduro weekend is the Dirt Bike Games that take place Saturday afternoon. This year the riders who rode all the trails offered logged 80+ miles before regrouping to test their technical merit. Some choose to grab a tasty beverage and spectate, while the true heroes kept their helmet on for some friendly competition.
Last Man Standing is just what it sounds like. 4-5 riders get in a large ribboned off area and try to knock each other over. After a few qualifying rounds, all round winners gather in the thunder dome to find the Last Man Standing. This year the winner was on an electric free ride, the future is here.
The Obstacle Course was next up in the slew of dirt bikes games. This course weaves its way through a random garage, over an aged gas tank and then chicanes the riders over the loosest West Texas gravel hill climb in camp. Some try not to dab a foot, the rest hope to stay upright. This is where Jackson Davis’ dominance began.
The Moto Limbo event is a fan favorite. The concept is simple and the outcome is always spectacular. The limbo pole moves ever lower as the riders try to rail the berm in a way they don’t clip the pole. I’m sure there’s a pole joke in there somewhere… Jackson Davis got lowest during the official game, but Zach Ingram got the lowest during the bonus round just to see if they could keep getting lower.
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 104
Last up before we retire to the camp fire for bench racing stories is Barrel Racing. Russell Bobbitt shows us how it’s done. If you google Barrel Racing rules, you’ll see many more diagrams, tips & tricks than you’d expect to see for something that seems so simple. Jackson Davis got the Turkey on the evening, taking the Barrel Racing win aboard his Sherco two stroke. BRAAAP!
Sundays Extreme Enduro Ride
Thanks to Cole Kirkpatrick, we have some epic footage from the Extreme Ride on Sunday. This is what really
makes the weekend for me normally. Though I’m always struggling, the challenges this terrain throws at me always pushes me to try harder and dig deeper. Here’s a quick look at some of the terrain, and the good times, those that rode on Sunday enjoyed.
Knee Update and Torrot Electric Motorcycles
Luckily I already had an MRI scheduled for Monday morning. My ACL looked thin, but not torn, and my MCL is most certainly damaged. He

said it was tough to tell the extent, but that we’re going to treat it like a torn MCL.
So here we are, going into the new year not riding again yet. My knee is feeling better and the kids are on their Torrot Electric Kids Bikes. I’m excited for what 2022 will bring us and what we’ll create for y’all here on YouTube!

A WORLD OF ADVENTURE
WINTER SERIES, ROUND 1
What freezing temperatures?
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 110
The winter season started a bit late this year; rain and soft ground caused SDR to cancel the opening round originally scheduled for January 9th. But on January 23rd, 66 eager riders in 11 different classes lined up, equipped with Trelleborg-style tires or ice screws, to challenge each other and the elements for a chance at the top step, and some bragging rights. The outpouring of competitor entries and spectators for a local race during the coldest time of the year was truly impressive. Riders equipped with foam handguards
but far less gear than you’d imagine for the 24-degree temperature. Fans lining the first turn would rush through the woods to cheer on their favorite rider, following them through as many parts of the course as possible, no matter how deep the snow. This event just goes to show that the motorcycle community will show up for an event, no matter the conditions.

The Expert Quads were first out on the course to help break up the ice and snow for the bike classes. As the quads were rounding their final laps, the Super Senior, Over the Hill A and Over the Hill B/C
riders were on the start line getting their bikes warmed and ready. The 19 riders were released after the course was confirmed clear. From a dead-engine start, it was Jonathan Ruby (#5) and Ken Chamberlain (#125) going neck and neck for the

holeshot in the Over the Hill A class. Ruby would pull slightly ahead going into the first straight. In the Over the Hill B/C class, Craig Howes (#1214) would take the holeshot and the lead by an easy bike length ahead of Brian Laven (#1285).
The Super Senior (50+) class was dominated by Matthew Scott (#212A), who led six of the seven laps, finishing with a total time almost two minutes ahead of Robert Hamm Jr (#77) in second. Christopher Gross (#2107) on his KTM would finish out the top three.

Joshua Ackley (#2) would not only take the win in the Over the Hill A (30-50) class but would be the first rider to see the checkered flag, although it wasn’t easy. Off the start line, Ackley found himself in fifth place. By the second lap, Ackley and Chamberlain both found their groove, swapping fastest lap times
throughout the entire race, even finishing a lap with times less than 0.05 seconds apart. Ackley was able to accumulate enough small leads throughout the 30-minute race to earn first place, with an overall time of 26:01.388, only 15 seconds ahead of Chamberlain.

In the largest class of the day, the Super Open class, was dominated by Ian Potter (#76) and Logan Morley (#7). With the exception of lap six, the two riders were neck and neck throughout all nine laps, finishing within a few seconds of each other. A slight mishap in lap 6 set Morley back approximately 30 seconds, costing him the lead. Potter would take the win with a total time of 27:44.867, 38 seconds ahead. Morley would claim second place with Austin Woodruff (#1018) rounding out the podium.

Trevor Bouwens (#111) was the only rider in the Novice class to complete eight laps in the time limit, with a two-minute lead over second-place Lucius Shaunler (#14X) after lap seven.
The fastest riders were saved to the very last race, the Expert class. Morley and Potter both posted their best lap times of the day (2:05.125 and 2:04.426, respectively). The first lap, devoid of any lap traffic, saw the first five riders push times close to the two-minute mark. Andrew Gross (#637) kept a solid domination on eight of the nine laps, keeping all but one lap under three minutes. Logan Morley and Ian Potter were already familiar with the track and battled
amongst each other for podium positions. The last four laps proved to be the deciding factor, with Potter losing upwards of 10 seconds per lap. Morley and his KTM would see the checkered flag a full 30 seconds ahead of Potter for second place. Potter would finish in third.
The next round in the 2022 Winter Series will be held Sunday, February 6th.

TPuget Sound Trialers (PST) held the club’s annual New Year’s Trials School on January 8th. Unlike past years, where attendees were required to bring a trials motorcycle, this year twelve interested students were provided loaners to ride for the event.
Club member and instructor, Lori Taylor posted after the event, “Yesterday's school was a blast! Bill Thompson, Ian Griffin and I had the honor of coaching a group of enthusiastic people who ride dirt bikes and are interested in the sport of trials, but don't own trials bikes.”
Most of the loaner motorcycles were supplied by PST sponsor and Vertigo dealer, OlyMoto, owned by Will Geise. Club members also loaned guests a few of their personal bikes to provide students opportunity to try different 2-stroke, 4-stroke and electric rides.

Lori continued, “We had 10 women and 2 men in the group who worked on turning, hills, wheelies, small obstacles and some section riding. There were big improvements made and big smiles throughout the day. This introduction to the sport definitely made a great impression on the riders and I'm pretty sure all are currently shopping for a trials bike!
Thank you to the club board for creating this unique opportunity. Through efforts like this and continued promotion of quality events, the sport of motorcycle trials has a bright future.”
Twenty one additional students with trials bikes participated this year, coached by six other senior club riders.

AHRMA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country WHITE ROSE MOTORCYCLE CLUB
words by JOSHUA SCHUCKER photos BECKY SCHRECKENGOST
While all the signs were there from the start, in its third year, the late October stop at White Rose Motorcycle Club (WRMC) has clearly etched its mark as a definitive “can’t miss” event on the Mid-Atlantic’s (MA) schedule. For starters, the grounds and amenities are spacious and top-notch, as one would expect from a club that hosts multiple professional-level hill climb events yearly. Certainly, several other attributes factor in to the attraction of the event, not the least of which is the end-of-year suspense of championships to be decided, the last chance to hang

out with all the great folks of the MA until spring, and the associated farewells. Also, the Halloween theme has been a unique and consistent component of the White Rose round with a committed cast of characters continuing to outdo each other with an eclectic collection of costumes.
While there were many very welldone entries, the informal vote for winner of the costume party went to Grant Reichart’s giraffe get-up, which included a giraffe head grafted to the top of his helmet. Remarkably, he managed to complete three races (winning two!) with little issue despite the costume towering several feet above his normal height!
Historically, the course configuration here has lent itself to competitive racing and is always a tremendously enjoyable loop. The property hosts an extensive trail system that boasts a wide variety of terrain, woods thickness, and elevation. In addition, the club recently revamped its short motocross course atop the big hill and reconfigured the legacy grass track area into a snaking “GP-style” circuit of sweeping turns.
Serving as trail bosses for the weekend, series’ regulars, and WRMC members, Rick Albert, and Brett and Grant Reichart did an excellent job of laying out the course to create a fun layout with enough challenge to keep everyone engaged

and racy. These guys were quite busy as the club held its popular fall trail ride event on Saturday which brought several hundred riders, including many vintage enthusiasts participating in both events, onto the grounds for a day of riding several curated loops.
As the Saturday ride wound down, a brief rain shower swept across the area bringing a premature close to the ride for all but the most dedicated. Thankfully, any fears that Sunday would become a mud race, as has happened in recent years here, were rendered moot as the storm moved through quickly and helped lay down some of the dust generated from the trial ride.
Showing the work and commitment put in by the WRMC crew, Sunday’s course was mostly unique to Saturday’s trail ride and any carryover trail was run in a different direction or sequence. The course was just about all you could ask for. A step-up jump and a few turns in an open field following the start led straight into a single-track section winding back and forth through a small valley before cascading down a side hill adjacent to the parking area where many spectators lined up to cheer on the racers as they eventually rode across the “breakers” of the hill climb for all to see. A rip down the longest straight on the MX track, with several vintage bike and photographer-friendly

tabletops, followed before an extended run of flowing single track dumped the bikes onto the winding GP track where many riders, clear of the confines and difficult passing of the single-track, diced with their championship rivals in last-lap efforts to cross the finish line first.
VINTAGE RACE
Brett Reichart had his Puch out front and pulling away in the overall standings, but after clocking his fastest lap on lap three, he encountered bad luck on the ensuing final lap and handed the lead and runner-up place over to Dave Kutskel (Yamaha) and Josh Zerance (Can-Am). A disappointed Brett held on for the final podium spot.
Kevin Marshall and Glenn Hershey put in solid top-ten performances while putting an exclamation point on their 2021 class championships with wins in the Vintage 50+ and 60+ intermediate classes respectively. Richard Colahan made the most of a much-anticipated return from an injury suffered earlier in the year with a Classic Intermediate victory. Steadily creeping up in the standings all year, Brandon Rowe once again registered the top novice position and a Vintage class win.
POST VINTAGE RACE
When John Ashcraft is spotted aboard his big-bore Honda at the starting line, the safe money is bet

on him taking the overall win, and this event was no different. Ashcraft led every lap on the CR480 with Brian Grove and Lee Hickok trying to run him down to no avail as the two settled for filling out the podium in the overall and AA class. Mark Uth nailed down his second Post Vintage 60+ Expert win in a row on his IT250 followed by John Brunnett and James McCommon in second and third. Claudia McDowell finished up her first year in style with the series points lead as she maneuvered her XR200R to another Post Vintage Women’s Novice win, this time ahead of fellow XR pilot Stacy Groff. Jim Laird watched Kevin Marshall pull an early lead in Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate competition, but Laird kept chipping away until taking the lead on the last lap and sprinting to the checkers for a thirty second lead over Marshall. Harold Silbaugh rode his Yamaha IT to third behind them.
DISC BRAKE RACE
See above. Ashcraft. CR500. Victory. Runner-up in the overall and AA class would go to CR-mounted Michael Cramer with Pre-Modern Open Expert class winner Logan Holley in third. Sean McKinney would runner-up to Logan in that class. Felix Abalo made his series debut a strong one by finishing ahead of a strong pack of Early Modern 200 Intermediate players. would follow two-three. Josh Schucker passed leader Blaine Leppo on lap two but couldn’t shake Tim Brendlinger as the pair exited the woods head-to-tail on the last lap for a grass track showdown in early Modern Open Intermediate. Both riding 1989 Suzuki 250s, the race ended with Tim settling for second, while taking the series championship, with his RMX nearly scrubbing the rear tire of Schucker’s RM across the line.
As we conclude the 2021 season and excitedly look forward to 2022, please share in thanking the team of volunteers that Dave Kutskel has put together and the committed sponsors that support the regional events; Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Vee Rubber, Grove Printing, KMI Printing, Horizon Homes, and Works Enduro Riders. When the Klevaliden Hill Climb was inaugurated, two-wheel racing was on the move. This first southern uphill stretch of 1,000 meters was merely minutes away from the factory, in the town of Huskvarna. It was used for nine years, before the northern
part of Klevaliden came into use in 1933. On page 255 in the 1926 midsummer issue of nationwide magazine “ Svensk Motorsport ”, there is a story on the third Klevaliden Hill Climb. It gives you an insight on the great battle between Sweden’s two giant riders of the eradiplomacy vs daredevil.
First, the commentator introduced veteran Erik Westerberg through the megaphones as you could hear a roar from eager spectators, who had waited long for their champion. His race time after a dwindling speed on the 10 per cent steep uphill: 59 seconds – today’s best, so far. The following announcement presented youngster Gunnar
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 148
Kalén being next in line as the crowd shouted, “Now, he’s coming!” It seemed that his performance had a twinkle of “win or die” in it. Kalén not only ousted his opponent, but also set a new track record of 58.6 seconds – four tenths of a second better than Westerberg. With an entrance fee of one Krona (approx. 20 U.S. cents), people returned home being thrilled by the drama.
Ten pages later in the same magazine, you could read about a dramatic and terrible accident in the very same race at the kilometre South Klevaliden stretch. Halfway
up this hill, ace Nils Torell had gone off the track during practice, with consequences of severe injuries. He was lucky to escape the incident, thankfully still alive after spectacular acrobatics into a dangerous ditch.
Nils Torell eventually recovered in hospital and would return the following year, setting a new Klevaliden record of 52.4 seconds. This time would not be beaten for five consecutive years, until 1932 when the Stockholm rider Gunnar Barthelsson rode his Husqvarna to a 40.66 second run. This everlasting record equaled
VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - FEBRUARY 2022 // PAGE 149
an average of 90 km/h! In 1933, the organizers decided to move up the hill, where circumstances, in many ways, were more challenging. Both machines and riders had developed, now being slick and skilful. Here, the Klevaliden track was steeper with more difficult curves than earlier, one of the hardest being the “Engvalla-bend” which was a tough lefthander. This new stretch only had a length of 600 meters, but with a difference in altitude of 84 meters!
When I went to photograph the modern section of North Klevaliden’s famous “Engvallabend”, the surroundings were unrecognizable by Mother Nature’s work. Where once thousands of spectators gathered to watch excitement, there was now a paved road with posh housing in a residing area. Mind you, remnants of the same bend still exist, as you can see from my picture, but there is not much left to remind race fans of the Golden Age in Motorcycling. I gave thoughts to my 1904 post card where the road uphill is called “Klefvalia”.
More than 10,000 spectators came to watch on Whit Monday in 1933, most of them gathering near the “Engvalla-bend”, where great action was promised.
And no one returned home disappointed. Of the 35 starting riders, 15 of them were in the saddle of a Husqvarna, which now was the trendiest and fastest machine on the block. With all the Husky victories in Grand Prix racing and elsewhere, every motorcycle man now had a Husqvarna on top of their wish list.
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 150
The race was held in two stages, where every competitor rode the track twice, counting his best time for the overall results. Gunnar Kalén and Ragnar Sunnqvist – both on factory Husqvarnas – were big favorites of the day. The big question was who would be fastest up the Klevaliden. It turned out that both idols were winners – in different classes! Tutto, Husqvarna!
In 1934 the venue was upgraded to host the “ Nordic Hill Climb Championship ”, which drew an even bigger crowd. It is estimated that 14,000 people came to watch on this warm mid-August Sunday. Extra trains had been called in to transport spectators from near and far. And the track had been lengthened by 200 meters, which made the event even more spectacular.
VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - FEBRUARY 2022 // PAGE 151
ON THE PEGS // PAGE 152
Husky man Ragnar Sunnqvist won the 1,200cc sidecar class with a time of 45,4 seconds and came home second among the 750s. He was the big hero of the day. After the war, race-hungry fans came back to Klevaliden on a big scale in 1946. The alltime high of 17,000 spectators watched hill climb heats on a stretch that now consisted of 700 meters with a difference in altitude of over 100 meters. Many good pre-war riders made their comeback and the 1947 Klevaliden winner, Stellan Strandh on Husqvarna, summed it up all too well, saying, “This is the hairiest uphill stretch in Sweden. You don’t conquer here by riding carelessly!”
My uncle Rudolf Jönsson participated in the 1929 Klevaliden with unknown results. And well, his little brother Åke Jönsson did conquer it in 1949. In his superfast 500cc Effyh midget, he set the fastest time of 45,2 seconds, thereby gaining an overall win in the Klevaliden, which the following year was discontinued.
