When my generation was growing up in the late ’50s and early ’60s, we seemed to live in simpler times. Without the distraction of social media, smartphones and video games, we spent much time engaging in physical activity, reading for school and pleasure and

enjoying the neighborhoods and the world around us. Today’s kids face different challenges. Bombarded with digital communication, upsetting messages from media, social pressure, and even bullying, children are facing stress and feeling overwhelmed. What can parents do to help their children learn to de-stress, relax and turn their minds to positivity? Mallika Chopra, says the answer is to meditate and breathe. A wellness expert and daughter of Deepak Chopra, Mallika learned to meditate when she was nine years old. Her two daughters, ages 15 and 12, also practice meditation, drawing on their experiences and her own she wrote Just Breathe – Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement and More, a fun and easy guide to meditation for kids. Mallika is the author of Living with Intent, 100 Promises to My Baby, and 100 Questions from My Child. She’s a busy Mom, a sought-

after speaker and the founder of www.intent.com She lives in Santa Monica, California, and she joins me to discuss her beautifully illustrated and easy to follow book for children ages eight to 12, Just Breathe – Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement, and More. VICTOR FUHRMAN: Mallika, please share what was it like growing up as the daughter of the world-renowned Physician and New Thought Leader? MALLIKA CHOPRA: You know, that’s usually the first question I get, my brother as well. For us, our father was always our father. We never really intellectualized the thought too much about what was happening as we were kids. My memories of my father are really of my father as the stressed-out Doctor who was working 24/7, who drank to go to sleep, who smoked incessantly and was unhappy. My parents had come here as young immigrants, and they arrived here with $8 in their pocket, had me soon after they got here and my dad was just you know ambitious and worked hard, moonlit as a Omtimes.com

THE WINTER BLUES 10 Tips for Prevention & Treatment

10 TIPS FOR PREVENTION & TREATMENT

OMTIMES magazine FEb A • 2019

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in the US experience some symptoms of mild to moderate depression during the late Autumn and Winter months, a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Scientists have recently discovered light sensitive cells in the retina that are not related to vision, but do connect directly with areas of the brain that affect whether you are happy or sad. This is the first time such a specific physical mechanism for SAD has been identified. The discovery reinforces the usefulness of light boxes for indoor light therapy during the darker seasons of the year. Also, whenever there is sunshine during these winter months, go outside and get some on your skin; this helps with vitamin D production as well. Obviously, there are many degrees of depression, and seeking professional help if your symptoms are serious or chronic is advisable, but there is also a lot we can do to help ourselves. Here are some simple tips for keeping SAD at bay and lessening mild to moderate depression in general.

If you’d like more detailed information about an Integrative Medicine approach to this important topic check out the article on my website An Integrated Approach to Depression.

A Happy Outcome is Assured

Can you imagine being an adopted child reunited with your birth mother after 60 years? My friend Diane signed up for a genealogy research service, did a DNA

test, and found that she had a cousin unknown to her family. Diane contacted Sherry, who confirmed that she had been adopted and, through previous inquiry, knew that her mother’s name was Marcia. Diane’s aunt is Marcia, which sealed the match. Deeper inquiry into secret family history revealed that Marcia had a child out of wedlock 60 years ago and gave her up for adoption. She later married and had several children, but never told her husband, children, or other family members about her older daughter. Diane invited Sherry to come and meet her long-lost cousins. When Sherry arrived at her cousin’s home, she found a sign posted on the door: Welcome home, Sherry. Consider Sherry’s relief and reward to finally be reunited with her family, for whom she had searched for 60 years. The stage was set for a joyfully tearful weekend. Before long, knowledge of

Sherry’s family membership got around the clan. While Marcia initially denied the birth, her children convinced her to meet Sherry. You can imagine the intensity of that meeting. When Marcia held her daughter in her arms, she wept and said, “I should have kept you.” After many years of angst in the hearts of mother and daughter, the saga had a happy ending. A Course in Miracles urges us to remember, “A happy outcome to all things is sure.” What a powerful affirmation to hold in mind when things seem to be going wrong! We all struggle with some relationships and wonder if they will ever be resolved. Take heart. Somehow, somewhen, they will. The pain is just a chapter, not the conclusion. When Jesus dictated A Course in Miracles to Dr. Helen Schucman, he told her, “Midterm marks are not entered on the permanent record.” It is likewise said, “The record books do not

Developing Spiritual Gifts in Children By Cathedral of the soul

The Buddha’s spiritual counsel for parents was simple: To help the children to embody spiritual qualities such as generosity, responsibility, compassion, forgiveness and appreciation. Omtimes.com

The most important lesson parents can convey to their children is that every action has its consequencesnot only the bad ones but the good ones as well. They must be the change they want to see in the world.

Our Planet needs better people, better caretakers. Better Humans. Parents can benefit their children by training them to be more empathic, forgiving and grateful. Parents have a responsibility to install spiritual gifts as habits on their children’s radar, but it can be a challenge. The Primary education, or the bedside manners that parents teach children do not compare to the positive feeling of gratitude or being kind could be as part of their routine. Behavior Researchers have found that grateful people are healthier than others in the physical, emotional and mental way.

The habit of Forgiveness and Compassion in children Forgiving is an act of good faith, it means leaving behind bad things and making room for good things. Empathy, in turn, is about understanding the suffering of other people. Do you think this is a difficult task to teach a child how to be a Good Human? It might be, but we will show you some tools for your

child to develop the qualities of forgiveness and compassion and appreciation.

Teaching by Being an example The better way to teach a child is a continual practice. It is also important to you to embody such qualities. Saying thank you, please and sorry is a great way to promote real learning. Also, you may avoid complaining about the setbacks of life. Try to tell your experiences with an emphasis on personal gratitude, this will make the home environment perfect for teaching. In most times, our children learn from our example, our attitudes and actions are the models they tend to emulate. No doubt that parents are the role models to the children. So, whether we want it or not, our children tend to replicate us. We are often appraised by our children, so their behavior also depends on our own. We know that forgiveness and compassion are not as natural and Omtimes.com

The New Year is almost here. It’s been a tumultuous time in local and world politics; scientists are predicting dire things for our environment, and many of us are feeling overwhelmed by all the bad news. We’re feeling somewhat helpless and even a bit hopeless about the future. We don’t know what to do to make things better for ourselves, our families, our community and our planet. Not that I’m the expert in all things, but I have a few thoughts about how we can be more empowered in 2019 to create a better life for ourselves and make a positive contribution in the coming year to our loved ones and the world. Here’s my list of the seven things we can do right now to create a better 2019. 1. Consider the environment. This has both global and selfish motivations. When we consider the environment in our day-today choices, we’re able to take the kinds of actions that will turn things around for the better. On a selfish basis, when we help our planet, we create a safer, healthier

world for our children and for all the generations to come. 2. Slow down and breathe. By this, I mean that we should be more mindful. So much of what we do on a moment-to-moment basis is reactive. We rarely stop to consider how we’re feeling, what we need, or what might be the best course of action right now. When we slow down and breathe, we have a chance to think things through and make deliberate conscious decisions. This makes us much more competent and effective in our personal and professional lives. 3. Be kind. Again, this is a twosided act; both selfish and selfless. When we’re kind to others we do a lot of good in the world, and people want to pay it forward, so the kindness multiplies. On a selfish level being kind, caring and generous will make us happier and give us a greater sense of belonging, as many studies have proven. The more altruistic we are, the more joyful, peaceful and connected we feel. 4. Think Big Picture. We do so many things for immediate gratification without thinking of the long-term effects of these Omtimes.com

Getting To The Core and Healing Anger By Leigh Burton

Anger is deep in the hearts of many people and is a toxin that drains the very essence of life. It causes a great deal of suffering for everyone concerned. Whether

Omtimes.com

in privacy or visible to an entire community, a reaction to anger produces fear that robs us of emotional health. While it seems that some people thrive on anger, it isn’t comfortable for anyone and is a form of suffering that anyone would want to rid themselves of. It is one of the few emotions that causes an immediate onset of noticeable physical symptoms, and the shame that follows can be unbearable. Managing anger and the issue at the core of the matter requires emotional intelligence to heal. It may seem that we can be calm or happy one moment and instantly move into a state of anger, but the truth is that there is always a build-up to the explosion that inevitably happens when circumstances are handled inappropriately. When we suppress frustration, confusion, and shame, we kindle the ignition coil that inevitably burns its way to discharging something that cannot be taken back. What’s done is done and so to is the suffering that is unavoidable.

To respond to a circumstance is to acknowledge a feeling that something is not right. We are conditioned to believe that the expression of feelings other than joy is improper. If there is something that we don’t like or that makes us uncomfortable, we are encouraged to keep it to ourselves so that we don’t rock the boat. We might feel that how another person receives our expression is our responsibility. We may question our thoughts and wonder if we have the right to feel the way we do. If this was a healthy process, would it not make sense that we could suppress our feelings and it not eventually cause an outburst? There is nothing wrong with acknowledging how we feel, if done the right way, and it is a healthful way to respond to a circumstance. To react to pent-up anger is nothing short of abuse to ourselves and those around us. Simply put, an outburst of rage is violence against our right to peace and freedom.

How To Survive Being Single On , Valentine s Day Marcia Sirota Author, speaker, coach, and MD

This tendency to compare ourselves negatively can have a major impact on our self-esteem when holidays come around The other day, my hairdresser mentioned to me that he’s not looking forward to February. The reason was that as Valentine’s Day approaches, many of his single female customers are, in his words, Omtimes.com

“totally freaking out” about not having a date for the night. My hairdresser works in a nice salon. Most of his clients are attractive, successful women. A lot of the single ones, it seems, are having a hard time coping with being unattached on the one day of the year devoted to love. It reminds me a bit of New Year’s Eve, in which many of us put a huge amount of pressure on ourselves to have the most exciting celebrations with the largest group of friends. In both cases, I think that we’re trying too hard to prove something to ourselves A recent study from Sebastian Deri, a Cornell University, psychology Ph.D. candidate, demonstrated that although we usually consider ourselves superior in most categories, when it comes to our relationships, we assume that we’re less successful than the other people in our lives. This tendency to compare ourselves negatively can have a major impact on our self-esteem when holidays come around,

especially on Valentine’s Day. We imagine that everyone else is in a loving, committed relationship, or at least that they’re out there, having a ton of fun dating, while we’re alone in front of the TV in our fuzzy slippers plowing through a tub of Haagen Dazs. The single women at my hairdressers must be mortified they’re the “only one” in their social circle who’s “a failure” at finding a mate. But that’s not really the case. You’re not single because of any inadequacies or shortcomings within you. Sure, it’s great to meet that special someone and have their love and support day in and day out, but that isn’t always possible, especially in this age of increasing isolation and alienation. These days, a lot of us might be spending more of our time unattached than in a committed relationship, and for those people who find themselves alone on Valentine’s Day, I offer up a few suggestions. Karma Mates: Understanding Our Fated Relationships By Keen

Many of us have felt the pull of connection with a stranger, the instant recognition in the eyes of someone who becomes a trusted friend or lover. Alternatively, we’ve felt an unreasonable antipathy with someone we don’t know and been drawn into a relationship with him or her despite feeling repelled. Leela came to me to better understand a relationship like this that she was in with a man Omtimes.com

20 years her senior, David. “I don’t even really like him,” she confessed. “But for some reason, I stay with him. Why? Every time I try to leave, I feel like we’re two magnets that have to be together.” Magnets are an apt metaphor for the feeling that karma mates sometimes engender in us. It’s a relationship that feels compelling, but not always comfortable. Karma Mates: Working on Life Lessons Karma mates are those people in our lives with whom we have agreed to work out issues from a previous life. They differ from soulmates or twin souls in that they seem to operate on the level of the personality and often don’t involve the magical coherence people feel with the other types of soul bonds. This isn’t to say that karma mates are bad for us or are always difficult. However, typically, they enter our lives (or we enter theirs) for a specific purpose, and once that purpose is fulfilled, the relationship ends.

Karma mates can be lovers, friends, or even enemies. They are meaningful because they create a learning environment for our soul. When I explained the concept of a karma mate, Leela had an “aha” moment. We did a reading to discover the past-life karma that she had with David. What it revealed helped Leela to understand issues she was working on to further the growth of her soul. The reading also helped her understand that she might not spend a lifetime with this man but that the relationship was important, nonetheless. Understanding the Karmic Agreement -- How It Helps Us In Leela’s case, David had been in a position of power over her in a previous life. As an older man, he had been an important figure to Leela in that lifetime but had abused his power. Leela had been unable to speak up and claimed her rights and literally couldn’t leave the relationship (which had been a family one). In the present time, both she and David were learning lessons of power. He had the opportunity to learn to have power with

Tyabji) Pure love is all divine in its essential nature. In pure love, the soul of the lover and the beloved become one in an eternal embrace. Shri Radha’s love for Shri Krishna is an expression of the height of divine love, the most perfect expression of total surrender of the individual soul to the Cosmic Self. Their love was so complete that the line of division between the lover and the beloved faded away. Only the Divine Light of Love remained,

spreading its luminous glow over everything. The world became a temple of His Grace. Shri Radha’s love was so full that She lost Herself in that love and merged completely with Shri Krishna, the Divine Beloved. Only pure love is capable of opening wide the windows of the heart so that one can see into the very soul of life. Pure love sees not with the physical eyes but with the eyes of the soul. It sees not just the body but the soul of the beloved. It appreciates the Higher Self of the beloved and is drawn to the kindred song that calls awake the same melody humming deep within its own heart. Pure love is ever-giving. It desires only to give, to serve, to worship at the altar of Love. It seeks not to possess but to bestow. It willingly sacrifices everything for the beloved without ever feeling that it is giving because the nature

Do you Believe in Dragon Magick? By OMTimes

WHAT ARE DRAGONS? Dragons are beings that inhabit one of the many dimensions of the astral planes which we have contact and touch our world in some way. If dragons ever had a physical existence in this plane is something that cannot be said for sure. But, the infinity of legends and myths about these beings leads us to deduct that they make frequent visits to our plan of existence since the dawn of our humanity. According to an old legend, when the dragons first encountered the human being, still in the early days of the human species, in their wisdom, they decided to take care of the child being born, this new species, to help it develop. But, humans became so cruel to each other, that the dragons began to think it was not worth caring for humanity. So, they started to withdraw further into their dimension until they were no longer visible in this world.

Dragon Magick is believed to be the magic with the help of the Dragons. It is a branch of magic not connected to Wicca that, as its name says, makes use of the contact and the magical energy of the Dragons. Dragon Magick practitioners use magic quite in a different way from the Wiccans. First, we should emphasize that there are very few sources available on the subject and, and they can cover different aspects of the relationship with these astral Beings.

OMTIMES MAGAZINE

The changing behavior of some humans, which enabled the return of the Goddess and the strengthening of environmental movements, caused some dragons to intend to approach humanity again, provided the initiative initiated by us. Because they inhabit one of any dimensions we consider as the astral world, dragons can assume any shape and size they desire, but they often take the human form to communicate better with a man being. Since the dawn of time, dragons represent magic, for it is through it that these creatures create life in this dimension. That's why Magic practitioners can get in touch with dragons.

Bringing Angels into Your Life

Angels come in all forms! From winged guardian, a mysterious stranger, helpful neighbor or benevolent animal to angelic guides and protectors. Angels come to us through dreams, in person, on a breeze or even

through a strain of music. Angelic beings find a way to appear, where they are needed most. Do you recognize them? As I was writing this, I started to realize how often, an angel had interceded on my behalf, showed up during struggles in my life or even surrounding me in the form of statues, wall hangings, and candles in my home! All it takes to notice their support is to become more aware of their presence. Learning to work with Angels gives you the ability to connect with an inexhaustible source of light and energy. This practice can induce a healing effect in someone’s life. Anyone can gain access to this energy using an attunement process. (The process of becoming more aware and conscious). Consider these suggestions for bringing angels into your life: Raise your awareness 1. Life is in the present moment. How often are you physically doing something now, yet your

mind is already somewhere else.... three steps ahead of you... thinking about what you will say in your next meeting, what you will do after work or even what’s for dinner? ...completely ignoring the present moment, you are missing! Most of us don’t undertake our thoughts in awareness. Instead, our thoughts control us. As a biomedical scientist, KabatZinn puts it: Learning to “rest in stillness, that is - to stop doing and focus on being in the moment.” We need to live more at the moment. Living in the moment, also called mindfulness, is a state of active, open, intentional attention centered on the present. Raise awareness by raising your vibration 2. The practice of Mindfulness reduces stress, boosts immune functioning, and reduces chronic pain. Also, it lowers blood pressure, and helps patients cope with dis-ease. By alleviating stress, spending a few minutes a day focusing on living in the moment reduces that risk of dis-ease. Vibrational Omtimes.com

Beyond The Dualistic Thinking by Johanna Blomqvist

The culture of confrontation is so common that one might not even notice it. It’s part of our daily lives: east vs. west, immigrants vs. natives, rich vs. poor, right wing

Omtimes.com

vs. left wing, light vs. dark, science vs. religion, medicine vs. alternative medicine, etc. Even many of the most fundamental questions in our lives originate from polarities which are often artificial. However, to see beyond this dualistic thinking could free one from unnecessary fighting of life. Views on Duality The Indian guru, philosopher, yogi Paramahansa Yogananda writes in his book” Autobiography of a Yogi”:” Creation is light and shadow both, else no picture is possible. The good and evil of Maya must ever alternate in supremacy. If joy were ceaseless here in this world, would a man ever desire another? Without suffering, he scarcely cares to recall that he has forsaken his eternal home. Creation is only an immense movie, and our reality is not in it but beyond that.” According to him, we consist of two opposites, light and shadow or good and evil and our mission is to learn from the state of suffering. For

him, suffering helps us on our path towards our true selves within. The reality, however, is something different than we experience in this world, and the opposites are also just an illusion. Carl Jung, the revolutionary Psychiatrist emphasizes balance when referring to the significance of opposites:” The word “happiness” would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.” Osho, an Indian spiritual teacher who lived in the 20th century, says in turn: “The mind is dualistic, it is always building confrontation: winner and loser, observer and observable, target and experiencer, day and night. Even those that have not been divided will be divided into opposites. The day cannot be distinguished from night nor birth from death. They all have the same origin. However, the mind divides everything apart, into opposites, in order to understand things better. Nothing is opposite in its occurrence; all discrepancies Omtimes.com

Who Will remember Us? By Judi Lynch

If we make the conscious effort to carry the feelings, spirit, and creations of the past into the future, we assure all we have sacrificed to evolve humanity will not be lost. As we go through life, recognizing purposes and playing out our roles, we create an energy of love and history that survive when we leave these human bodies. Photographs, Omtimes.com

writings, family history, and genealogy all give us a voice long after we have transitioned our souls. Truly our lives are a legacy to our friends, family, and our species if the evolution for our accomplishments celebrates us. Many people have no interest in making a “name” for themselves as long as they can say they lived a happy life and they were of service to others. Feeling the peace and a sense of purpose is enough reward in keeping motivated and empowered. Many others, who feel a calling to share their wisdom and talents with the world, want memories and honor in different ways. Many of us have heirlooms from our ancestors which show their creative talents or skills at collecting valuables — knitted baby clothes, beautiful quilts, old photos, letters, toy collectibles, dishes, silver, jewelry and a host of other items we inherited to keep and pass on to the next generation. It is comforting to have something from someone we loved and who cared for us in life. It makes us remember that we are loved without condition, or we received a unique and special piece of family history to cherish.

It also makes us think about what we would want to leave with those we love to remember us. Not only those we love, but also those we’ve never met. We have a message to convey in a book, a piece of art or another creative outlook in which we have an expressive voice to share. If what we have to say can make a difference in someone’s life in a positive way, then it becomes part of our mission later in life. There are no rules when it comes to the evolution of spirit to survive. Our energies live on help to inspire and motivate those who are still in the flesh, complete with visions and gems of genius from the past. Everything old is new and improved as they say. INDIA BANS BIRD INCARCERATION

By Cathedral Of The Soul

OMTIMES MAGAZINE

IN HISTORIC ANIMAL RIGHTS DECISION

We humans Beings are considered Beings capable of making conscious decisions for ourselves. Yet, we often make choices that hurt not only ourselves but also the entire planet and all its sentient beings. Our selfishness and greed put at risk every day the lives of thousands of animals, who find themselves subjected to inhumane living conditions to meet our needs and our pleasure. Often, we sustain this situation without knowing, buying exotic animals on black markets, all sequestered from their environment and converted into a state of imprisonment. This is a reality that needs active transformation.

"Birds have fundamental rights that include the right to live with dignity and should not receive cruelty by anyone, including the claim made by the respondent" (Mohazzim). We are all free, and we need to respect nature and its creations for all that it provides to us every day. India prohibits incarceration. Many nations still need to come to this awareness, but India has recently taken the first step and sets an example for all. The country has banned the incarceration of birds. Indian Judge Manmohan Singh said: "I have clear in my mind that all birds have the fundamental rights to flying in the skies and that humans do not have the right to keep them trapped in cages to fulfill their selfish purposes or what want it to be. "

The Judge made the decision in a specific case in which several birds were rescued from a man named Mohazzim. The Man claimed to be the guardian of the animals, but it was contested by the NGO People for Animals. The NGO argued that Mohazzim was keeping them in small cages and selling them to profit. The court of the first instance returned the birds to the man, but the NGO appealed to a higher court. The other court issued the decision in favor of the NGO and all the birds that live in cages, saying: "This court is of the opinion that conducting trade in birds is a violation of their rights. They deserve compassion.
