maha’s best can be found within the pages of this—our annual Best of Omaha Results book.

The Best of Omaha is nearly a year-long project for us. We start thinking about the categories in the spring, in the summer we publish the campaign, in the fall is the contest, and in the winter we publish this results book. Like many of you, I anxiously await seeing the results of this contest that we at Omaha Magazine put in so much time and effort. One reason is because I always vote in the contest, and like many of you, I want to know if my choices won. Some of my choices won, others did not. Two of the winners in Best Antique Store are places my husband I like to frequent, but I don’t know the third winner at all. The Iowa Hawk Shop did not even come close to winning Best Husker Store. I like all three of the winners for Best Falafel for different reasons. DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN Managing Editor

At the beginning of 2020, many thought this would be a year of clear vision, yet clearly the year has gone in a direction no one fathomed. Some of my favorite restaurants have closed—the Dundee Dell was a place where I ate with friends from the media as well as my family; and in February 2008, my husband and I ate with friends at the Flatiron before going to see the Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum. I will miss going to Julio’s for the “Ring the Bell” party during the Omaha Film Festival. Yet, 2020 has also seen lots of new and different businesses frequented. I have consciously bought books from all my favorite bookstores this year—Jackson Street Booksellers and The Bookworm have been great about pulling books from the shelves and putting them on hold so I have minimal contact inside the store. I never bought anything from a board game cafe before, but this year I have bought two new games. I have not set foot in a yoga studio in months (I’ve spent too much time baking instead of practicing yoga), but I smiled when I saw the winners and hoped that some day soon I will be able to partake in hot yoga again. While many large events like Maha Festival and the Omaha Symphony Debutante Ball were canceled for 2020, others continued through new avenues. I attended the Oct. 7 fundraiser for the Omaha Public Library via Zoom. Other events, such as Omaha Gives!, were already set up to work online and so were able to continue helping our neighbors. Because whether we are able to see one another in person or via an internet call, our friends and neighbors are the reason for this book. It is a resource of the best in Omaha voted on by our neighbors for our neighbors—from downtown to West O, North O to South O. Within the pages you will find recommendations from your friends and neighbors on Omaha’s Best places to eat, shop, conduct home maintenance, receive medical care, plan your finances, repair your car, and more.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES FROM A UNIQUE YEAR This year has been interesting, as many industries have adjusted to working from home or mandating numerous new safety protocols. Others closed for a period of time. Employers saw their employees pull together to keep industries running and innovating, sometimes within a 24-hour timespan. Omaha Magazine asked experts from three industries—entertainment, nonprofit, and small business—what they think is the silver lining of this unusual year.

Throughout the past year’s challenges, one message has been clear: how much we need live performing arts and entertainment experiences. That was evident at a (socially distanced) performance at the Orpheum by the band The Verve Pipe held in October.

2020 is not the year we were planning for. March came and went, spring turned into summer, and summer into fall. So many changes and crises for our community and country to address. Canceling events and fundraisers, moving so much of the work online, and helping clients navigate the pandemic has been challenging for all, but there are some positive aspects we have found.

I no longer waste others’ time by stating what a strange year it has been, everyone knows this. By mid-March we had to adjust our strategic plan based on a new set of economic and employment variables. Our strategic plan remains just an arm’s length away from me, but adapting it is where I have spent my time this year. Is adaptability a Gallup strength?

I sat near the back of the theater and could see the joy on the musicians’ faces of performing for a live audience for the first time in eight months. The enthusiastic audience response reflected those same emotions. That immersive, in-person experience—whether to hear a band, to be moved by Omaha Symphony performances at the Holland, to experience a touring Broadway production at the Orpheum, to see a dance company—is what has been missing. It was energizing to be reminded of the power of these performances. These events happen in venues across our community—from the largest to the smallest ones. Although performances are economic drivers for the community, providing employment for thousands of people, the most important factor is the connection between performer and audience through that shared experience. Virtual connections are helpful, but they are not a substitute for the magic and emotion of an in-person show or concert.

The work of nonprofits evolved. While nonprofits have always been nimble and able to react to changing situations and economic trends, 2020 has taught us how to pivot better to meet the needs of our community. The generosity of Omaha to meet the fast-growing and fast-changing needs has been nothing short of amazing. Individuals, businesses, and foundations opened their hearts and wallets to support nonprofits and help the community. It will take time to determine and adapt to the next normal, and I am confident that nonprofits are up to the challenge.

What good has come out of 2020? A reminder of the importance and need for these experiences. I know we will return once again to bring performers and audiences together—and I can’t wait. BEST OF OMAHA 2021

As a media monitoring service, we have seen two stories dominating the news since March, politics and the pandemic. There truly has been great coverage for our clients during this time, but the news hole for public relations has had to compete in a way never seen before, making their reliance on our media measurement services more critical than ever. The silver lining in all of this is I have learned that our advance planning, and investment in people and technology, truly makes a difference. Operationally, we had moved nearly our entire team home and had them securely connecting via a virtual private network within 24 hours. Phones were transferred, our team assisted all our clients, and we didn’t miss a beat. The people on our team aren’t just good, they are great in performance of their work, even under evolving conditions.

It isn’t that we never did that before, but we didn’t do it on a mass scale. It took

extra time and care to make sure we got things right.” Several menu items were created to look appealing to customers as a take-out option from the moment they are created to the moment they are eaten. Dishes like Torta Ahogada, a Mexican specialty sandwich filled with carnitas, beans, onions, and avocado that is smothered in salsa and served in an Authentic Mexican Bread Roll. Whether that means driving to Scooters coffee shop and ordering the same flavor of latte on Mondays, attending concerts at the Slowdown on Friday nights, or using First National Bank to manage finances, the people of Omaha speak highly of their favorites. The following list of nearly 100 businesses are part of our Hall of Fame, in other words, they have all won the designation Best of Omaha at least 10 years in a row. While it might not seem possible that some of these companies have been in business for 10 years, other businesses are old Omaha favorites, those businesses that people patronize whenever they need to paint a room, visit a salon, or order a drink.

Being in business 10 years is a feat to celebrate: the SBA reported a couple of years ago that approximately 30% of all businesses— whether construction, manufacturing, retail, or hospitality-based— survive the first 10 years. e are obsessed by “The Best.”

We are told to be the best. To be a star we have to be the best of the best—which seems oxymoronic because if we are better than the best, then they could not have been the best. And, by definition, we are then only better. It gets confusing. We are urged to be best. This slogan really puzzles me, mainly because I was taught to diagram sentences and that one needs an article. My mom used to send me off to school with a happy “Be good!” She never waved a “Be best!” Just sayin’. A happy, well-rounded person must have best friends. But we are told we should have several best friends. That, of course, is ridiculous, as is the advice “Marry your best friend.” That is a bad idea. If you do that, who will listen to your gripes about your spouse? Gillette razors are “The Best a man can get.” OK, maybe, but that seems to place a lot of importance on shaving. Likewise, how important can a greeting card be? We know that if we care enough, we will send the very best. Is there really a folded piece of cardstock with a picture of two otters kissing that indicates exactly how much we care?

Weddings usually include a best man. We’ve all seen the Lifetime Channel movies about how that works out. Hint, if he has a mustache, or was once a recurring character on a hit sitcom, he turns into a stalker after the third commercial break. Things always turn out for the best. At least that what we hear from people who have had things actually turn out for the best. The rest are never heard from. There is a big store where we can buy the best. I bought something there once and had to return it because it wasn’t the best or even good, or OK—it was not anything except dangerous when it started a fire. Revenge is a dish best served cold—though some think, living well is the best revenge. Scouts pledge to do their best to do their duty. Our favorite auntie always reminds us that our best days are still ahead of us. Almost everyone owns a best of album or two by our favorite bands. And famously, the best things in life are free. Hint: they’re not. As the poet Robert Browning grew old he maintained that the best is yet to be. All us old guys wish that were true, but… The best way out is through. Hey, most of us are just trying to make the best of it, whatever it is. comforted by the knowledge that the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project is monitoring climate worldwide.
