When I was about ten years old my father, bought a piece of agricultural land and started growing various fruit trees. He found a lot of satisfaction in the work in the orchard and growing things by himself. He studied books about contemporary gardening and developed his orchard with quite a dedication – at that small piece of land (about eight ares) he grew some 20 different fruit trees and bushes.

When some thirty years ago my father moved out of Skopje and as I was never showing much interest in the beginning with, the orchard was not kept and was basically abandoned. In the years, much around the orchard changed (the local cemetery expanded near by, houses arose near, even the country changed).

In the process of denationalization some years ago the descendants of the previous owners (the ones before the one my father bought the land from) have claimed the land (not just the orchard, but much bigger plot of land), claiming the land was taken from their family illegally. As my father does not live here anymore (he is not even a citizen of Macedonia), nor has he ever got issued a legal property deed (at the time in socialist Yugoslavia, that was not priority) he cannot successfully contest their claim. This means, we have effectively lost that orchard.

Oliver Musovik was born in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1971. Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje in 1997, MFA in 2004. He had solo exhibitions in Macedonia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Serbia, Australia and Montenegro. He had participated at numerous international exhibitions, among others
