Varsity Football The . 1972 Falcons began the y e a r with a new look—an explosive, w id e open offense. Though com plicated to learn, this offense a llo w e d many more options and more chances for quick touchdowns. This offense w as first used on the High Point Eagles, w ho had been especially tough the past fe w years. For the first quarter the g am e w as even, but then, the offense began rolling, scoring the last 34 points of the gam e. Chris Giusti m ade a beautiful g ra b with seconds rem aining in the first half, making the score 21-7. The second half w as all Falcons. The only disappointm ent in the victory, w as that standout D ave Rivers w as lost for the season with a back injury. The team next travelled to Baltimore to face one of the city's toughest teams, C alvert H all. In the hot, hard fought gam e, the Falcons w e re tougher, holding C alvert H all scoreless. The G C attack cam e mainly from Bob M cC arth y passing and the running of M ik e Bosco, w ho covered 78 yds in 14 carries. C enter Jim Edwards w as lost for the season, requiring surgery on his knee. The Ireton C ard in als next fell to the Falcons 33-6. A 50 yd touchdown pass to Danny Kolar started things going, and the C ard in als beg an to use a lot of blitzes on defense. O n one of the blitzes M ike Bosco crashed through the middle, cut to the outside, and sped 35 for another score. M cC arthy's passing g ave the offense the b alan ce it n eed ed, and Ireton w as simply overw helm ed. M a tt Riley set the tone for the G o n z a g a g am e when he re turned the opening kickoff'92 yds for a touchdown..The Falcons w ent on to rout the hapless Eagles 43-0. N o w 4-0 with impressive credentials G o d d Counsel met the Carroll.Lions on a m u d d y C arro ll Field. The difference w as C a rroll q uarterback, Skip M cD an iels, w ho sped, spur and passed,

The Falcons then faced a psyched up Annapolis Team . G C w as dow n after losing to C a rro ll, and carried a slim 7-0 lead going into the second half. Later in the g am e with the score 14-6 Falcons, Annapolis beg an driving. W ith one minute rem aining, and Annapolis in scoring position, Tom W a n d re s intercepted a pass that iced the victory. The Hom ecom ing g am e saw D e M a th a invade the Falcon Field. In the 1st quarter, a beautiful trap b lock by Brian Rafferty o p e n e d a hole for a 20 yd touchdown romp by D anny Kolar. Later, a field goal by M ike G rib b in put G o o d Counsel up 10-0. But D e M a th a storm ed back, and a fe w big plays m ade it 14-10, D e M a th a . In the second half. G o o d Counsel w as frustrated inside the D e M a th a 20 yd line three times. W ith tw o minutes rem aining the Falcons had first and goal from the eight ya rd line. A penalty and a swarm ing defense a llo w e d D e M a th a to preserve a 14-10 victory. The Falcons then got up to revenge a loss to O 'C o n n e ll. Danny Kolar took a long pass e a rly in the g am e and d ra g g e d a d efen d er across the goal line. O 'C o n n e ll w ouldn't give up though, and it took a bom b from M c C a rth y to Giusti in the final minute to b e a t the boys from Virginia. The final g am e w as against St. John's, ranked num ber one in the W ashington are a . The C adets jumped to an ea rly lea d , but the Falcons fought back and took a lead to the locker room a t halftime. St. John's constant counter moving and g rea t speed took its toll in the final q u arter and the C a dets pulled a w a y from a determ ined, but tired Fal-
