A native Baltimorean, Brother Emeric became a Xaverian when he entered Sacred Heart Novitiate on September 19, 1946, after his graduation from Mt. St. Joseph High School. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Catholic University in 1956 and earned a Master of Arts degree from St. John’s University in I960, He has taught mathematics for all his teaching years, which began at Leonard Hall, Leonardtown, Maryland, in 1949. Two years later, Brother began teaching at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx; in 1953, he moved to St. Michael’s High School in Brooklyn and taught there for four years. He was transferred to Xaverian High School for three years before moving to St. Xavier’s in Louisville in 1960. Eight years later, Brother Emeric was assigned to Good Counsel and has been Mathematics Department Chairman for the past four years. He was honored at a jubilee celebration on October 10, 1971, by his relatives and friends. His jovial, good nature and strong opinions make him a favorite for discussions and repartee. Many of his after-school hours have been spent moderating the Math Club and helping former students over some rough spots in their college math courses.

Brother Emeric

25 Years As Xaverians Preferring to mark the anniversary of his 25th year as a Xaverian in a quiet manner, Brother Gavin had an intim ate Eucharistic celebration and supper with his immediate family and community on February 19,1972. There were reminiscences of his elementary school years at St. Teresa’s in Brooklyn, of his attending St. Joseph’s Juniorate, and of his entering Sacred Heart Novitiate in Fort Monroe, Virginia; there, Thomas Murphy received the religious name of Brother Gavin. Two years later, he began studies at Catholic University and was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. During the next five years, Brother Gavin was a teacher at Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, and spent two more years at Flaget High School in Louisville. Having spent a number of summers attending St. John’s University, he received the Master of Arts degree in 1960. With his new diploma tucked under his arm, Brother Gavin came to Good Counsel, determined to make his students love Latin. Alumni are heard to recall perhaps Brother’s most famous classroom expression, "Aw, c’mon.” Some of them loved Latin; some didn’t. But their remembrances of Brother Gavin are of a warm, friendly, sincere teacher and friend.

Because of a good summer practice and two pre-season victories over Peary and Georgetown Prep, the Falcons started the season optimistically against High Point. Expectations about the GC defense were realized when they held the humongous Eagles to only six points. Offensively, Kolar and Kuhn supplied seven for the Falcons’ opening victory. In the next game against Woodward, the offense went wild, sparked by John Griffin’s several long-gaining quarterback sneaks. Scores by Bosco, Abell, Dillon, Hyams, Griffin, and Kuhn provided forty-one points for what proved to be statistically the best game of the season. The defense again proved its prowess by hawking a shutout. With confidence growing, the team travelled to Virginia

to meet Ireton in the Falcons’ first night game, which was characterized by hard-hitting on both teams. In a classic defensive confrontation, GC interceptions proved to be the margin by setting up a G.C.T.D. and by stifling three powerful Cardinal drives. The exultation of hard earned victory was overshadowed by concern for John Griffin, who was injured in the third quarter. Lousy field conditions were a big factor in the next game, GC’s first Conference duel. Both Gonzaga and Good Counsel had difficulty passing, running, and holding onto the ball. Fumbled center-snaps and handoffs by both teams provided scoring opportunities for the opponents. A Jay Kuhn field goal made the difference in this hair-raiser against the psyched-up Gonzaga Eagles.

No matter how hard the team tried, everyone still thought about Homecoming. Preparations for other games started the week before; for Homecoming, they began on the first day of summer practice. The fact that it was Homecoming wasn’t important. The fact that is was Carroll was. The frustrations, anger, hopes, and desires boiling up inside each player for two months were suddenly let loose on Falcon Field at 2:00 on October 9; and it was obvious every second of play. The intense emotions brought out the hardest hits, the best efforts, and, in the end, the keenest disappointment of the season. Three long Good Counsel drives were stopped inside the 15 yard line. The Falcon offense was able to move the ball well,

but simply couldn’t score. The defense presented Carroll with the same predicament except on one play—the Carroll score on a 67 yard pass. Although strongly disappointed over the loss to Carroll, the students were determined not to let it interfere with their fun that night. The evening’s highlight was, of course, the announcement of the Homecoming Queen and her Court. The honor was awarded to beautiful Ann Stanley, escorted by Hank Deily. Stunning Sue L’Heureux, accompanied by Jeff Lewis, and gorgeous Cindy Ware, escorted by George Hyams, were the two Princesses. These couples and surely all the couples at the dance had a really fine time.

The Falcon defense was characterized by fine pursuit and tough tackling.

The loss to Carroll was heartbreaking, and its effects were still obvious the following week. An effortless week of practice foreshadowed the results of the next game. Perhaps a little overconfident due to the previous year’s Churchill game, the Falcons just couldn’t put it all together. The first half displayed an ineptitude of both teams, offensively and defensively, until GC’s Matt Riley scored on a pass in the closing minutes of the second quarter. In the third quarter, Churchill tied the score, 7-7, but a Jay Kuhn field goal put GC ahead with two minutes left to play in the game. Everyone thought the game was wrapped up until the Bulldogs broke their leashes and

shocked the players and fans by scoring on a 72 yard broken play. The Falcons fought ferociously but to no avail, and the game ended with GC on the Churchill 7 yard line. Shocked and embarrassed by the Churchill game, the team got psyched in practice the following week for the upcoming game with Rockville. Good Counsel held the Rams to 48 yards total offense, while the dazzling performance of the Falcon offense ran up 260 yards, reminiscent of the first few games of the season. The final score, 21-0, described well the determined-to-win playing of both the offensive and defensive units.

There was no shame at all in Good Counsel’s loss to DeMatha. The defense was able to beat DeMatha’s huge offensive line and contain the speedy Kenny Roy fairly well for three quarters, thwarting all Stag attempts to score. Toward the end of the third quarter, a DeMatha end scored on a pop pass. GC hung in there; but in the first minutes of the fourth quarter, the extreme size difference began to show, and DeMatha scored a second time. They were simply too big! The following game against O’Connell was the only poor Falcon performance of the season. By the time the team woke up in this night confrontation in Virginia, the score was already 20-0. Perhaps it was fatigue or thinking about St. John’s, but

whatever the cause, there was no doubt that the GC defense simply didn’t put out much effort and allowed five touchdowns. GC spirit was sparked somewhat by the surprising performance of sophomore quarterback John Campbell in the fourth quarter. The final game against St. John’s proved to be a tough one, with the teams fairly evenly matched. Hard hitting, few mistakes, and tough defense made this a low scoring contest with one field goal per team at the closing whistle. All the GC quarterbacks performed but could only get the team close enough for field goal attempts. The defense had several fantastic series in which they stopped St. John’s drives on the two and three-yard lines.

Slow Start Results in 1-J+ Season Experimentation and determination spelled the season for the Varsity Cross Country Team. News that Coach Nelson could not complete the season made the team schedule practices on its own. Father Malone came to the rescue midway through the season. But the late start proved disastrous to tfre Falcons as the Varsity ended the season with a disappointing 1-4 record. Seniors Ken Seam one and P a t R in g proved to be the most consistent runners, placing well in all the meets. Bill Ohlmacher, also a senior, turned in good runs for the third year in a row. Frank Gaegler, Phil Atzert, and A1 Bidwick all contributed much to what resulted in a dismal season record. The Junior Varsity, hampered by many of the same problems the Varsity experienced, eventually put it all together to win the WMAC title. Runners Phil Gibson, Gerry Schoonmaker, and Dan Rekos paved the way for a successful season, the success of which was assured by the consistent running of harriers Tim McDonald and Brian Weber.

Gala Concert Rocks Coming off the best year ever, in attendance and popularity and financial success, this year’s first rock concert had difficulty meeting the students’ great expectations. It was, nevertheless, a success. Featured were Crank, Tractor, and Liberation, all of whom had played here previously. For the first time, the number of available tickets was limited, and a sellout crowd of 1200 soaked up the sounds of the three groups. The concert brought in $120.00 profit for the Gala Drive. The concert’s success and the lack of problems assured the scheduling of more concerts.

When the need for help arises, Good Counsel students are always quick to respond. When students Bill Noonan and Joe Hospital were seriously injuried in an automobile accident, the seniors responded by sponsoring a benefit dance. Heading the organization committee were seniors Will Mohler and Bob Malloy. Alumnus Vince Gancie and five other seniors helped the c o m m ittee to b rin g in Mourning Glory with senior Steve Dallachiesa singing. Also featured was Cold World, featuring John Vengrouskie, another senior, and alumnus Bill Carey. Both bands played gratis, and the $642 profit was given to the parents of the injured seniors.

The Varsity blended excellent height and quickness at the guard positions to run up a record of 21-8. The team was the finest in GC basketball history. Starting three juniors, the Falcons began their season with eight victories in the first nine games. Then came a string of very tough games against League members. Every loss was close, as DeMatha won by two with one second left and Mackin rallied in overtime to win by three. The most satisfying victory of the year was undoubtedly over St. John’s; playing at home, the Falcons whipped the Cadets by thirteen for their first win over them in ten years. We were led by Captain Rick Kidwell, a 6’5” senior forward, all season. Giving size to the team were juniors Doug Rykhus and John O’Connell at 6’7” and 6’8” respectively, both of whom frequently dominated the games. At season’s end, GC won the St. Stephen’s Invitational Tournament with three impressive victories. The Falcons placed guard Bob McCarthy and forward Rick Kidwell on the All-Tournament Team, with Rick being selected Most Valuable Player. In the final tally, the team was unbeaten by any public school and was 17-2 outside of League play. In recognition of this fact, Good Counsel was ranked thirteenth in the Washington area.
