DEDICA TION Brother Charles, C.F.X. Ever since Good Counsel opened its doors ten years ago, Brother Charles has held the twofold po sition of managing the cafeteria and teaching daily in the classroom. For Brother, on the eve of his fiftieth anniversary in the Xaverian order, ad ministrative and classroom work is an old story. Besides having been principal of three high schools, Brother Charles, with his degree from the Univer sity of Notre Dame, has taught History, Religion, English, Physics and Chemistry. But here at Good Counsel, Brother’s hard work in the cafeteria, a vital organ in the school plant, has practically gone unnoticed. It is for this reason that the staff of the ’68 FALCON dedicates our yearbook to Brother Charles, an unforgettable chapter in our memories of Good Counsel.

The 1967 Falcons got off to a slow start as they spotted High Point 14 points in the opening m inutes, then played to a virtual stalem ate, dropping the first game 16-0. However the momentum established in the second half of the High Point defeat continued as the Falcons whipped Crossland behind the strong running of Joe Connors. The Falcons establish ed themselves as a team to be reckoned with as they crushed the then first-ranked DeMatha team , 16-14, with the offensive effort concentrated around the blocking of center Bob Kemp and guards Tom McFadden, Steve Baker and Paul Soule. For Crossland and DeMatha, who went on to capture the Prince George's County and Catholic League titles respectively, the loss at the hands of the Falcons and the toe of Mike Berrang, whose 25 and 30 yd. Mike Berrang startles Crossland from 25 field goals provided the winning margin in each contest, consti yards out. tuted the sole blot on their records. The Falcons then skidded as they dropped a heartbreaker to Gonzaga, 19-13, on a blocked punt in the closing seconds, battled Carroll almost evenly for three quarters and then succumbed to the Lions’ passing attack, 21-12, despite two valuable interceptions by Ron Tucker, and lost to Cardozo on a 40 yard touchdown pass in the final m in utes. Against O'Connell the team found themselves as they rebounded from a 14-7 half-tim e deficit. Up-back Bob Spencer led the offensive attack as the defensive forces rallied behind defensive leader Joe Krainak and the play of tackle Tony Gallagher. In the closing weeks of the season the Falcons reeled in three more victories. Wilson yielded tothe fired-up Good Counsel eleven in a lopsided 26-7 triumph. The team prolonged their streak, exacting fitting r§v£nge-in de molishing Episcopal before the Homecoming crowd, as Andy Pecoraro gathered in two key Maroon fumbles. The Falcons closed out with a resounding 40-0 win over McNamara in which Jim Griffin picked off two Mustang aerials to set a school interception record with nine for the year.

Once again this year the Falcon harriers produced a winning record with 4 wins, 3 losses and one split. Although not up to usual standard, the team looks strong for next year as returning juniors Kevin Roddy and Bob Blanchard will be backed up by this year's strong JV. MVP Rory Baruth headed up the *67 contingent of seniors Gary Costenbader, John Gretz, John Hickey, Hilary Wessel and Paul Schilling. Baruth turned in superb performances even though hampered by an ankle injury. The Falcon grapplers, competing on a varsity level for the first tim e, ran into some strong opposition before they could display any victory laurels for their efforts. Losing their opening m atch to O'Connell, the wrestlers rebounded to defeat Georgetown Prep in a stunning victory. However, strong teams from Carroll, Ireton, Sidwell Friends, St. Albans and Episcopal held the Falcons winless until their victory over Einstien. The grapplers then closed out the season with a thrilling win over St. Stephan's. The team showed improvement in each match and should be ready for a winning season next year. Senior co-captains Chris Wilk and Bill Bonifant will be sorely missed, but underclass men Paul Fehlner, Rich Oben, and Dan and Mike Murphy should carry the team in the *68-'69 sea son . Most of the points won by the team this year cam e from the lower weight classes where Oben, Fehlner, and the Murphys wrestled.

Falcon B-ball got off to a flying start in its second season under chief mentor Bob Bombard. Experience abounded with the return of 7 letterm en, seniors Rich Eiden, Mike Berrang, Tom Sweet, Jim Griffin, Jesse Houston, Mike O'Connor and junior Ed Fitzgerald. Seniors Jeff Vaughan, Rick Tegethoff, juniors Mike Clancy, Jim Roberts, Steve White and soph Jeff Simms rounded out the squad. In the season's opener, the Falcons, led by ball-hawking guards Eiden and Sweet and the scoring of Fitzgerald, streaked to a 77-47 victory over Einstein. Continuing to roll, the Falcons raced to a 5-1 record behind the rebounding of O’Connor and Berrang, the dynamic scoring - rebounding power of Fitzgerald and an incredulously accurate free-throw percentage. Fortunes changed, however, and the B-bailers dropped 7 of 9, most by very close scores. Coming back with a new look led by the ace defensive play Griffin and Clancy, the potent offen sive punch of Eiden and soph sensation Simms and the ever reliable Fitz, they won their last 4 and finished 11 - 8 .

The season was highlighted by the numerous thumpings of our county rivals, the only blemish on a 7-1 record being a closing seconds defeat by Peary. 21 point performances by Eiden and Fitzgerald, and Jeff Simms* perfect 13 of 13 charity tosses combined to administer an 88-83 pasting to perennial powerhouse Richard Montgomery. The biggest moments occurred as they pulverized arch-rival Wheaton. In encounter #1, the Falcons’ impenetrable defense, led by Eiden, Sweet and Fitz, stunned Wheaton as the Falcons rolled to a 31-8 halftim e lead, and crushed the Knights 67-43. In encounter #2 on alien soil, the method was different but the results the sam e, A high powered offense led by Eiden, Clancy and Simms and the rebounding of O’Connor destroyed the Knights once again 89-62. Despite the loss of 8 seniors, next year's team could be the best ever with the return of leading scorer and rebounder Fitzgerald, rebounder Steve White, all-around threats Clancy and Simms and sharpshooter Jim Roberts.
