Xaverian Tradition Founder’s Philosophy Our Lady of Good Counsel High School was founded by the Xaverian Brothers as a college-preparatory school for boys in 1958. Thirty years later, we opened our doors to young women. Today, we educate over 1,200 students each year in the Xaverian tradition of academic excellence and caring. The Xaverian Brothers are a lay religious congregation founded in Belgium by Theodore James Ryken. In the spirit of their patron, Saint Francis Xavier, the Xaverian Brothers undertake missionary work throughout the world to spread the ideals of Christian brotherhood. Their sponsorship of Good Counsel is perhaps best embodied by the congregation’s motto: “In harmony small things grow.”

Academics Excellence is the norm at GC. Good Counsel’s program of study prepares each student for success in college. Our curriculum is defined, yet flexible. Students may choose to take all courses within one academic program or select courses from different programs according to their aptitude, interest, and ability. GC is dedicated to providing a challenging high school experience to all students. To fulfill that mission, we offer students the most rigorous college preparatory programs available. Every student who graduates will have taken all the units necessary for his/her admission to college. Each student takes at least seven courses each year.

Bonaventure Studies: named for the longest tenured principal of OLGCHS, Brother Bonaventure Scully, Bonaventure Studies provides a comprehensive curriculum that enables each student to earn required graduation credits. Courses are designed to expose students to the essential content and skill development they will need to succeed in college.
Xaverian Honors: for students with qualifying high school placement test scores and middle-school grades, GC provides opportunities to engage in deeper and more complex content to improve each student’s understanding of key concepts. The curriculum requires abstract and higher-order thinking skills.

Ryken Studies: named for the founder of the Xaverian Brothers, Ryken Studies is a college preparatory program designed for highly motivated students who have been diagnosed with mild learning differences. The educational approach assists students in their core courses through the use of varied teaching styles and strategies that focus on skill development in smaller group settings. By junior year, most students will move into the Boneventure, Honors, AP, and IB Programs in anticipation of the transition to college.

IB Diploma Program: is a two-year college preparatory program that balances rigorous academic studies with a holistic approach towards living constructively in an ever-expanding world. Beyond the purely academic requirements, however, the IB approach compels students to reflect upon activities, athletics, and service as vital components of a well-rounded education. Students seeking an IB diploma must meet the requirements of the program in addition to standard requirements for graduation. Students apply to the IB Program in the winter of their sophomore year.

Performing Arts Center A place for musicians, dancers, actors, speakers, debaters, singers, and students interested in the technical and the behind-the-scenes aspects of performance. Opened in May 2016, the three-floor, 26,000 square-foot state-of-the-art space includes a 650+ seat theatre, set design and construction shop, dressing rooms, fully equipped orchestra pit, costume and properties shops, black box theatre, dance studio, and arts education classroom.
Clubs Discover your passion. Good Counsel offers students extracurricular and co-curricular activities through the Club Program. The goal of the Club Program is to foster students’ exploration of their areas of interest, and build social and leadership skills. Particular focus is given to teaching students how to use their gifts and talents to serve others. Some clubs participate in interscholastic competitions, like Robotics and Speech and Debate.

Our graduates have won at the Penn Relays, played at the highest level of Division I athletics, and traveled throughout the country to compete. They’ve even gone on to win gold in the Olympics, play in the NFL and on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Their efforts bring honor to our school and earn respect and admiration from their opponents. Our strong athletic program promotes enthusiasm, loyalty, and school spirit among our students, faculty, alumni, and community.
Admissions Criteria Students must complete a Good Counsel admissions online application form and submit it with a nonrefundable $50.00 application fee by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2018. All students must take the High School Placement Test. The GC Admissions Office reviews each student’s complete application file when rendering a decision. Applicants to Our Lady of Good Counsel High School are evaluated for admission based upon the following criteria: • Submission of the online Good Counsel application with application fee, at olgchs.org/apply • Appropriate ability as demonstrated on the High School Placement Test (HSPT) • High level of academic achievement in the seventh grade and first quarter of the eighth grade • A demonstrated sincere desire to attend Good Counsel • Recommendations of Principals and/or teachers • Satisfactory disciplinary and attendance history • In-person interview with a member of the Good Counsel community
