Sounding Out
We believe that instrumental lessons should be available to all children so we launched Sounding Out, a revolutionary programme to provide lessons in orchestral instruments, without the barrier of cost, to children at all the city primary schools in Canterbury. Supported by King’s and a wide network of benefactors, our goal is simple: to break down the barriers and throw the opportunity of music to the widest catchment possible.
Our ambition is to develop a community music base at King’s that will thrive in years to come and bring participants together with King’s School pupils. On Saturday mornings in term time, the Edred Wright Music School plays host to our scheme to provide free instrumental lessons to children from Canterbury. While many schools offer excellent schemes for ensemble participation, Sounding Out puts instruments in children’s hands for the first time, seeking to reverse the decline in classical tuition amongst young people in the UK.
A typical morning will include an instrumental lesson on either the violin, cello or trumpet and a group musicianship session. Pupils are loaned their own instrument to take home, and given all resources, including sheet music and a music bag.
This scheme is made possible thanks to the generous support of a wide network of music lovers, including parents of current and former King’s pupils, members of the community and charitable trusts. In order to sustain the project and develop further we need to secure future funding and would love to hear from you if you would like to help.

Music Scholarships are awarded to outstanding musicians for 13+ and 16+ entry, and may be accompanied by bursaries up to 100%. Pre-auditions are recommended two years prior to entry to the School.
