April is Lineworker Appreciation Month—a time to honor those doing essential, demanding work.
When the news says to stay home, that's when our crews head out—through wind, ice, rain and darkness. Whether storms or extreme heat, our lineworkers restore power and broadband services so your homes and businesses can return to normal swiftly.
What you typically see is a truck pull up, two lineworkers step out, and, not long after, the lights come back on, then internet service. It can look simple. It can look quick. But what you do not see is everything that makes that moment possible.
Linework is a highly skilled and very dangerous trade. Our electric crews regularly work with energized wires carrying up to 14,400 volts—about 60 times the 120 volts in a standard home outlet. These lines can power entire neighborhoods, and working with them safely takes precise movements, discipline and deep technical knowledge.
Constant training is essential. Our lineworkers spend hours learning the latest techniques and attend regular safety meetings to review procedures and reinforce best practices. Safety relies on attention to detail when working with high voltage.
Linework has long been one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. The risks are real, but with the right training, equipment, and a strong safety culture, it can be done safely. That is why we invest in high-quality tools, protective gear, and ongoing education. For us, safety is a daily commitment, not just a slogan.
Before every job, crews pause for a tailgate meeting to identify hazards, clarify roles and ensure everyone understands the plan. That quick conversation provides clear communication and safety before anyone lifts a tool.
What might look like a quick 20-minute repair actually requires years of experience. Our veteran lineworkers mentor newer crew members, sharing knowledge that cannot be found in any book. This passing down of experience makes our team stronger and helps keep everyone safe.
The result is what matters most: service restored quickly, safely, and with care for our community. When the lights and internet service come back on, your children can finish their homework, groceries stay fresh, and businesses can open on time. These everyday victories are possible because of the dedication and skill of our lineworkers.
This April, I encourage you to thank our lineworkers directly. If you see their trucks in your neighborhood, give them a wave or a word of appreciation. You can also share your thanks on social media by posting stories or photos with #ThankALineworker, and invite your neighbors to do the same. Your recognition truly matters. It shows our crews that you value their skill, preparation, and the reliable service they provide to all 100,000 of our members and subscribers every day.

OEC giving away 250 trees in April
For the ninth year in a row, OEC is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to give free trees to member-consumers. 8231321901
"Members who take advantage of energy efficiency measures in the months leading up to summer can maximize their savings," said Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency solutions specialist. "We are proud to offer the Energy-Saving Trees program free of charge to our members."
Energy-Saving Trees is a researchbased, easy-to-use online mapping tool that takes the guesswork out of tree planting. By entering simple information about your home and yard, the tool calculates where to specifically and strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits.
Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energy-
saving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20% on energy costs.
Members who are interested may begin claiming their one free tree on April 1 and must be able to pick it up in Norman on April 25 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visit arborday.org/OEC to register and for more information.

As a cooperative committed to providing safe and reliable energy to our members, OEC recognizes the importance of proper vegetation management practices. We have two arborists on staff to assess the health and safety of trees near power lines, and we use herbicides to control the growth of trees and other vegetation that could interfere with power lines. This not only helps
to prevent power outages and ensure public safety, but it also helps to promote the growth of healthy, energysaving trees in the right places.
By working to maintain a clear right-of-way for power lines, we are also promoting the planting of new trees in in appropriate locations through our annual EnergySaving Trees giveaway. This not only helps to prevent the need for costly and potentially dangerous pruning or removal of trees in the future, but it also maximizes the energy-saving benefits of trees for homeowners.
