‘Egg’cellent

KERRI BAYER, DNP, MSN
Regional Chief Nursing Officer SSM Health
Where did you grow up, and do you have a favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Hollis, a small town in southwest Oklahoma near the Texas panhandle. One of my favorite childhood memories is traveling every weekend to visit my grandparents in Wellington, Texas. My sisters and I would ride four wheelers over the cotton fields and make mudpies using my grandmother’s chicken eggs — simple moments that brought us so much joy.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
My dad was a veterinarian in our small town and also

Heritage Hall first graders tell us where the most “egg”cellent place is to hide an Easter egg:
Logan Robertson’s class
One day Ihad a great idea. I wanted to hide my Easter egg in the best place ever. Iwill get on a airplane to Dallas and then I will go to the Dallas Cowboy stadium. Iwill hide it on the field. I will paint it like a football. They can play with it. No one will know it is an egg. I will be watching the Cowboys. They are my favorite NFL team. I will laugh because I know it is an egg. This was the best hiding place ever.

the best place ever. So I grabed my egg and Iwent to find a place for the egg. Iwill not hide it in the desk. They are too
small. The Loft is too easy. The book bins are too big. I will hide

volunteered on the local ambulance service.
Watching him care for both people and animals sparked my early curiosity about healthcare and showed me what is meant to serve a community. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a part of that world. I feel fortunate to have built a career in nursing, caring for others, supporting families and being present during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
What are you most passionate about professionally?

As healthcare continues to evolve, my passions have evolved with it. At my core, I remain committed to ensuring that every person who comes to us in a time of need receives exceptional care. While I no longer provide direct patient care, I see it as my responsibility to ensure our clinicians have the resources, support and environment they need to deliver the level of care we all want for our families. In light of the ongoing nursing shortage, I’ve also developed a deep interest in expanding access to healthcare education so more people, regardless of background, can enter this profession and help meet the growing needs of our communities.

Has your definition of success changed as you’ve developed your career?
Through my career, I’ve come to realize that success isn’t measured by position or title, but by the experiences that shape us and the lessons we carry forward.
What is a perfect day for you?
A perfect day begins before the house is fully awake. I love having that quiet window to myself, heading to the gym and mentally prepping for my day. Once everyone is up, sending my kids off to school and chatting with my college-age daughter gives me an instant boost. Those little moments really set the tone before I dive into the excitement and occasional chaos that comes with healthcare leadership. No two days are the same, which is energizing. By evening, I like to slow things down, reflect on the blessings the day held and reconnect with my kids. It is my way of hitting the reset button –gratitude, perspective and maybe a deep breath or two before doing it all again tomorrow.
What is some of the best advice you’ve received in your life?
A dear friend once told me, “Don’t drown before you get to the water.” It is a reminder I
carry with me, because it is easy to get weighed down by all the “what ifs” that keep us from taking necessary chances, often the very chances that lead to meaningful improvement. What is No. 1 on your bucket list?
I don’t really have a bucket list. Instead, I try to live each day with the intention of being better than the day before, learning from my experiences, and drawing on my courage to pursue opportunities that come my way. Oklahoma has had an amazing sports history, which has featured a lineup of individuals such as Mickey Mantle, Shannon Miller, Jim Thorpe, Patty Gasso, etc. Did you have any sports heroes growing up?
I played sports growing up, but I can’t say I had any specific heroes. I’ve always admired athletes who excel in their craft, though. More than anything, I appreciate the lessons sports taught me – dedication, teamwork, compassion and healthy competition.
How would you like to be remembered?
I would like to be remembered as someone who was present in time of need and who made a meaningful, positive contribution to the world around me.

30-mile bike tours, a 50mile Fondo, 5K and 10K runs, a 5K wheelchair event, a 2-mile walk and stroller derby, a 1-mile kids’ fun run and the 1mile Woof Walk. Registration is now open at redbud.org.
Since 1983, Redbud Classic has become a spring tradition in Oklahoma City, raising nearly $1 million for local nonprofit organizations while generating broad community and economic impact. The event brings together athletes, families, volunteers, sponsors and local businesses in a shared effort to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the community.
“Oklahoma City has
embraced Redbud Classic for more than four decades because it represents more than an event weekend,” said Kristin Hersom, Redbud Classic race director.
“Each year, our participants’ efforts translate into meaningful support for local beneficiaries. We proudly continue that tradition in 2026 by supporting Oklahoma Project Woman and ensuring that the miles our athletes complete directly benefit women and men in our community who need access to lifesaving services.”
Oklahoma Project Woman provides free mammograms and diagnostic services to uninsured and underinsured individuals across Oklahoma, helping ensure early detection of breast cancer regardless of financial circumstances.
In addition to participating, community members can get involved in several ways. Volunteer opportunities are available at redbud.org/redbud-classic/volunteer. Sponsors are recognized at redbud.org/redbudclassic/our-sponsors, and businesses interested in supporting the event can submit inquiries at redbud.org/ sponsorship-interest-form. Direct donations may be made at runsignup.com/ Race/Donate/OK/NicholsHills/RedbudClassic. Redbud Classic continues to focus on building a culture of philanthropy, fun and fitness, reinforcing Oklahoma City pride while creating opportunities for residents to engage, give back and pursue personal wellness goals together.

From Luke 23:32-24:12
Two others — criminals — were also led away to be executed with him. When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
The people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing: “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God's Messiah, the Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine and said, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”An inscription was above Him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at Him: “Aren't You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!”

And He said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”
The Death of Jesus
When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, “This man really was righteous!”All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests. But all who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. The Burial of Jesus
But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? We are punished justly, because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”
It was now about noon and darkness came over
the whole land until three, because the sun's light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust My spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last.

There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus's body. Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed. It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how His body was placed. Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
Resurrection morning
On the first day of the
week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?’ asked the men. “He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day'?’” And they remembered his words. Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.

Hip hop superstar and cultural icon Snoop Dogg is coming to Oklahoma. Snoop is set to star in and produce a movie called God of the Rodeo, which will film in Tulsa and Boley, home to one of the oldest and largest all black rodeos.

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. in Long Beach, California, launched his career in 1993 with a debut album, Doggystyle. The album shot to number one on the Billboard charts, sold four million copies, and introduced two classic rap singles, “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice.” Since then, he has sold 35 million records, co-headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show, earned seventeen Grammy nominations and a Primetime Emmy, and been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In the past couple of decades, Snoop has been just as busy outside of music. His appearance on Martha Stewart’s cooking show in 2008 led to several collaborations, including television commercials, a television series called Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, cookbooks, and a co-hosting job of equestrian events at the Olympics. In fact, Snoop was the NBC correspondent during the 2024 Paris Olympics and Team USA’s first-ever Honorary Coach for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The film Snoop is bringing to Oklahoma is about an inmate at the notorious Angola Prison in Louisiana who finds hope riding in the prison’s first inmate rodeo Oklahoma is the perfect spot to film this movie. Bradley Beesley filmed his awesome documentary, Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, at the Oklahoma State Peniten-
tiary in McAlister.
Locally, God of the Rodeo is being produced by Rebellium Films. Founded and run by married power couple and super producers Randy Wayne and Talia Bella, Rebellium has produced most of the high-profile films made in Oklahoma for the past few years. Their latest Oklahoma filmed feature, Brian, premiered at the SXSW film festival in Austin last week.
The rest of the creative team is equally fascinating. The film is written and directed by Rosalind Ross, who did the same for the 2022 Mark Wahlberg film Father Stu. That film also starred Mel Gibson, who Ross was married to for nine years. Prior to working in film, Ross was a gold medal winning equestrian.
Legend Ridley Scott and his wife and producing partner Giannina Scott, are on board as producers. Ridley Scott is the Oscar nominated director of Gladiator Thelma & Louise Black Hawk Down The Martian Blade Runner, and Alien. Gianna Scott has been working with Ridley since White Squall as both as an actress and more lately as a producer. She played Russel Crowe’s wife in both Gladiator and Body of Lies
This is an exciting group of people to have coming to Oklahoma. I am so grateful for production companies like Rebellium Films, who work so hard to bring projects here; the Oklahoma Film & Music Office, who provide a solid infrastructure and strong rebate program; and of course, all of the wonderful cast and crew members living in Oklahoma who make the magic happen on screen.
Mitchell’s Shade has announced the 2026 winners of its Seeds for Hope Scholarship Program, recognizing two Oklahoma City students for essays and artwork reflecting on the meaning and impact of trees in their lives.
The annual program awards two $6,000 scholarships — one to a fourth-grade student and one to an eighth-grade student — which are reserved until the recipients graduate from high school and may be used for tuition at a college, junior college, or trade school. Under the direction of Mitchell’s Shade, the program awards scholarships to
third- through eighth-grade students enrolled in Title I schools across Oklahoma City.
Mitchell’s Shade is a community partnership with Scissortail Park dedicated to honoring loved ones and expanding the tree canopy in Oklahoma City neighborhoods through free tree giveaways and community programs.
Students participating in the contest submit essays and artwork about their favorite tree and reflect on its significance in their lives. One student compared her special tree to her best friend. A witness to her life and years of memories with spe-

cial people. Another student compared her tree to her mother, writing about how a strong foundation has given her strength through the years.
The 2026 scholarship winners are: Valeria Alcaraz, a fourthgrade student at John Rex Elementary School and Ka’Mariyona Woods, an eighthgrade student at F.D. Moon Middle School.
Each student’s essay and artwork will be displayed during the Mitchell’s Shade annual Tree Giveaway on April 11 at 9 am at the stage area in Scissortail Park.
Through the Seeds for Hope

program, both students will receive $6,000 reserved for them upon high school graduation. The scholarship funds will be administered through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
“Planting a tree is really about planting hope,” said Melanie Burns, founder of Mitchell’s Shade. “Seeds for Hope encourages students to reflect on the people and places that help them grow, and it reminds them that their voices, ideas, and compassion matter. These scholarships are a promise to young students that their futures are bright.”

T
his spring, I invite you to take a moment to engage with nature. Look around your neighborhood, your local green space, a local wildscape, or even your own backyard, and you’ll find that trees are doing some of the most important environmental work in our community. Trees provide thermal refuge and habitat, offering food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds, pollinators, and other native wildlife.
Bringing awareness to trees has been a long-standing tradition in the United States. For more than 154[AM1.1] years, the wonderful springtime tradition known as National Arbor Day has been observed on the last Friday in April. Since its founding in Nebraska in 1872, inaugural celebrations have resulted in the planting of more than one million trees—a testament to an early understanding that trees play a vital role in sustaining healthy landscapes and quality communities.
Today in central Oklahoma, the newly formed Arboretum Collaborative is working to carry that legacy forward by championing trees. The Arboretum Collaborative brings together related organizations to promote conservation, advance tree plant -

ing, and support habitat preservation for wildlife and humans alike. We encourage the use of native plants, work to expand tree canopies to support wildlife, and host programs focused on restoration and environmental stewardship.
The chief mission of the Arboretum Collaborative is to convene and align member organizations to advance conservation and protect biodiversity across the properties of Red Ridge Nature Preserve, Mollie Spencer Farm, Campbell Art Park at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, and Park House. This year, the collaborative has expanded to include SSM Health St. Anthony. Together, we work to advance conservation initiatives, protect natural resources, and increase biodiversity across all participating sites. Our internationally accredited tree collection includes dozens of native species, and we plan to expand the collection in the coming years. Each partner site contributes

unique plantings that increase biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of the urban and native forest.
The collaborative recently planted trees in the urban forest [AM2.1]at Campbell Art Park, adjacent to the Oklahoma Contemporary. This project was made possible by our friends at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation through the Margaret Annis Boys Trust. We are grateful for the opportunity to plant trees and to honor our commitment to expanding the native and urban forests in central Oklahoma. Looking ahead, new projects will further extend this impact. The Eleanor B. Kirkpatrick Garden and Great Lawn, opening in 2027 at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, will provide a new green space designed for both restoration and education. Featuring shaded seating, walking paths, and diverse plantings, the space will also offer opportunities for selfguided exploration of the plantings and community learning.
Later this month, the Arboretum Collaborative will celebrate National Arbor Day with a series of public events focused on trees and the wildlife it supports. These programs offer a chance to connect with nature while learning how small actions, like planting and caring for trees, can make a lasting difference in your own backyard. We hope to see you there.
Join me in the months ahead as we continue to explore the natural world around us and discover just how much can be found, even in our own backyards.
Happy Spring and Arbor Day!

As summer approaches, many Oklahoma City families begin asking the same question: where our kids spend their days in a place that is not only fun, but meaningful and enriching? For nearly four decades, Camp Chaverim has been an answer to that question.
Now entering its 39th summer, Camp Chaverim — run by the Jewish Federation of Greater OKC — welcomes kiddos ages 3 to 15 from across the community. Open to families of all backgrounds, our camp offers an inclusive and welcoming environment rooted in friendship, creativity, and personal growth.
Each day at camp is filled with a wide range of activities, including arts and crafts, sports, music, drama, swimming and themed programs. Older campers will enjoy additional opportunities such as field trips and specialty experiences, while younger campers will benefit from a nurturing, on-site environment designed just for them. What truly sets Camp Chaverim apart is its focus on building community and confidence. The word “Chaverim” means “friends” in Hebrew, and that spirit is reflected in every aspect of camp culture. Staff members are
trained not only to supervise, but to mentor—helping campers try new things, form friendships, and discover their own strengths.
Camp Chaverim dates this summer are June 1stJuly 24th. Registration is now open, and families are encouraged to enroll early as space is limited.
For more information or to register, visit www.jfedokc.org/camp-chaverim or contact our Camp Director at dan@jfedokc.org. For families seeking a summer filled with fun, connection, and growth, Camp Chaverim continues to be a cherished community tradition.
