75 years of Beaux Arts tradition comes to an end By Rose Lane Editor Past Beaux Arts kings and current committee members have received letters that after 75 years, the Beaux Arts Ball is no more. The last debutante presentation took place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving of last year.

But Chris Keesee, chairman of the Kirkpatrick Bank and Kirkpatrick foundation — and the grandson of Eleanor Kirkpatrick, the organizer and first chairman of the Beaux Arts Ball — is willing to work with those who would like to see the institution go on. Rich in tradition, the first ball was held in 1945 for the

benefit of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. In addition to a king, the society at that time named a queen. Over the years, thousands of young women and men have been introduced to society through the debutante ball. The young ladies were presented by their fathers before an audience of family and friends.

The court also consisted of a class of men, the escorts; two young pages and the king, who was announced at the ball. The ability to change is why some of the oldest traditions in the United States have survived, Keesee said. “It seems unusual for Beaux Arts to suddenly — and without notice or cause

Plywood parking lots are a no-no in Village

By Eric Oesch Staff Writer A makeshift plywood parking lot at the Quality Foods convenience store has led to changes in city ordinances to update standards for commercial parking lots. The plywood parking situation caught the attention of The Village city council more than a month ago. The council learned of the plywood parking addition to concrete parking at the convenience store during its regular Feb. 7 meeting. The parking addition was large enough to accommodate at least three full size vehicles The store had placed sheets of plywood on a grassy area adjacent to its regular concrete parking lot. After some discussion, the council tabled consideration due to the lack of council members in attendance to declare an emergency clause. An emergency clause allows an ordinance to become effective immediately after council approval. Ward Four Councilwoman Wynter Griffins was unable to attend the Feb. 7 meeting. A full council was in attendance for the Feb. 21

Oklahoma State Treasurer Randy McDaniel has been appointed chairman of the National Association of State Treasurers Financial Education and Empowerment Committee. The appointment was made by Connecticut State Treasurer Shawn Wooden, association president.

Nearly $215k raised during MSM gala Mount St. Mary Catholic High School’s annual gala, Magic at The Mount, celebrated its 25th year by raising a record-breaking $214,242. Every element of the evening was leveled up for the occasion, namely with the gala moving to the new Omni Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. Returning and first time guests alike were treated to a first class experience from cocktail hour to late night dancing.

“Magic at The Mount 2022 was one of the best I’ve experienced and I’ve been in attendance since the very first one,” said Janis Streets ‘76 Mollman. “The food was delicious, the service was above average and the auction items were desirable.” The event has grown from the first Magic in 1997, where students helped serve food in the auditorium to raise money for new auditorium chairs.

Magic’s live portion was kickstarted by an emotive video that instilled in the crowd that everyone is The Mount. Director of Advancement Chris Stiles followed this with a reflection on our paths and staying true to the path God has placed before us. “When you go through uncertain times, the solution is simple - go back to what is certain,” Stiles said. “Get on the path God has placed before us because Mount St. Mary is about God, it is about faith, it is about love, it is about learning and it is about forgiveness.” The evening’s fun then continued with a heads or tails game to determine the winner of the 50/50 raffle. Sides were chosen and beads were tossed until Jay Mauldin was declared the winner. His half of the $7,850 jackpot barely made it back to the table before Mauldin decided to donate it back to the MSM Rockets for Life project. “This was our first gala and it was great to see the support from so many people,” Mauldin said. “While our children aren’t old enough for high school yet, we were inspired by the faith in action displayed by the students See MSM, Page 3

he Cherokee Nation recently announced the creation of a film rebate program. Starting this week, the Cherokee Nation Film Office will accept applications for a new cash rebate incentive fund offering up to $1 million annually for film and television production expenses that occur within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee Nation is located in Northeast Oklahoma covering 7,000 square miles over 14 counties offering a variety of looks from the big city to rural towns to rivers, dams, and five distinct ecoregions. The reservation also hosts a modern 27,000-foot-facility with a virtual soundstage, using CGI technology to simulate locations from around the world. The Cherokee film rebate program is a first for a Native American tribe. It offers up to 25% cash back on expenses and wages for productions over $50,000. The incentive program is available on its own or it can be used in conjunction with the state of Oklahoma’s incentive program. The Film In Oklahoma Act of 2021, administered by the Oklahoma Film + Music Office, offers a similar program with a budget of $30 million. Surprisingly, all

of that money has already been allocated. The new Paramount Plus series The Tulsa King and the second season of FX’s Reservation Dogs are top on the list, alongside several feature films. Despite the pandemic, production expenditures in Oklahoma reached $170.4 million in fiscal year 2021, up from $32.6 million in the previous year. This new incentive from the Cherokee nation will allow films that did not qualify for the Oklahoma rebate this year another chance at a rebate. And, with the $1 million annual cap, it will likely help several smaller budget films. The mission of the Cherokee Nation Film Office is to increase the presence of Native Americans in every level of the film and television industries, while creating opportunities for economic development and jobs in the Cherokee Nation. This new rebate program is key to that mission. In some respects, the program is already a success. The Los Angeles Times ran a big feature story

The piece from writer Anousha Sakouis pro-vided great exposure for the Cherokee Nation and a nice interview with Jennifer Loren, director of Cherokee Nation Film Office and Original Content. “This has the potential to be revolutionary when it comes to Indigenous filmmaking because what we want to do is use this film incentive to create a Native film hub in northeastern Oklahoma,” said Loren. “We are being extremely strategic about building this industry here in a very smart way so that we are creating jobs that will not just be temporary, so that we can have an industry that is here yearround.” If the Cherokee film rebate program proves to be successful, I expect similar programs to be launched from other tribes and cities across the state. Crossings Christian also erupted out of the gate and rolled to a 4629 win over Muldrow in a regional semifinal at Wagoner. Reid Lovelace paced the Knights (16-6) with 22 points and Cam Parker added eight points. They faced host Perkins-Tryon on Tuesday in a regional final. With a win, Crossings would reach the Area III championship game this Friday in Checotah against the Classen SAS-Mount St. Mary winner. A loss moves them into a consolation matchup with the Broken Bow-Byng winner on Thursday. Mount St. Mary had a bit tougher time against Broken Bow but held on for a 52-47 victory at Saturday’s regional semifinal in Byng. The Rockets (19-4) faced off against Classen SAS for a regional title on Tuesday.

A win puts them in the area title game on Friday against Crossings Christian or Perkins, while a loss drops them to the consolation round against the Fort GibsonMuldrow winner on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Harding Prep girls outlasted Plainview for a 41-27 victory against Plainview in the a regional semifinal on Saturday at Heritage Hall. The Eagles (15-4) took on host Ada on Tuesday for a regional title with the winner earning a trip to the Area IV final March 11 against the BlanchardTuttle winner in Shawnee. Cristo Rey squads sweep Beth Haven Academy to end season Both Cristo Rey boys and girls basketball teams ended their seasons on high notes with a pair of sweeps over Beth Haven Academy and Sovereign Community School in last week’s action. The Royal girls cruised to a 28-12 victory against Beth Haven. Ahtziri Maciel led the way with 12 points and Blair Tilton chipped in six points. Panthers, Antlers, Irish still alive in playoffs All three Fridayland boys basketball teams, along with the PC North girls, kept their seasons alive with wins in the Class 5A and 6A regional tournaments last Monday and Saturday. The Deer Creek boys held on for a 57-56 victory against Mustang on Monday in a 6A regional at Moore. Hudson Linsenmeyer scored a team-best 18 and Camden Laskie chipped in 13 points for the Antlers (12-11). They advanced to the regional final on Wednesday against host Moore. The winner moves on to the area final on March 4 against the Norman-Edmond North winner at Capitol Hill, while the losers drop to the consolation semifinal on March 4 at Noble. Final regional results weren’t available at press time but are posted at OKCFRIDAY.com. PC North hosted a 6A West regional and cruised to an 82-54 victory over Yukon and faced Norman North in the final on Wednesday. With a win, the Panthers (16-4) would play in the area final March 4 against the Edmond Memorial-Choctaw winner with the losers to meet in the consolation semifinals. War abroad stokes children’s fears at home By Joe Dorman President and CEO Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy Growing up in the 70s and 80s in America, my generation was on the tail-end of those drills for preparing for bombs to drop should there be a nuclear war. We also were continually reminded of what war might look like from different forms of entertainment. Movies like “Red Dawn” and “Rocky 3” raised my generation to fear and loathe Soviet Russia, and we watched “The Miracle on Ice,” when the underdog U.S. men’s hockey team beat the Soviets during the 1980 Winter Olympics medal round. The idea that “The Russians” were our enemies was hard-baked into our psyche.

Less than a decade later, the Soviet Union fell, and a wave of freedom spread across eastern Europe. Those vast changes today are contained in History Channel specials and history textbooks for today’s students with none of those memories. Now, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine shows that the former KGB leader is not interested in peace. He is trying to regain the prestige he feels was lost when the Soviet Union collapsed. That old animosity of the Russian government is creeping back into our minds, and with validation. The 27-nation strong European Union, often criticized for its lack of consensus, swiftly and unanimously approved severe economic sanctions, joining the United States in imposing a hefty toll for Putin’s aggression. The EU also is committing funding — for the first time in its history — to purchase and deliver weapons to a country in conflict. Despite polls showing Putin had strong support among Russians prior to the invasion, brave protesters took to the streets in Russia and in nations around the globe over the weekend, in support of Ukraine. An independent monitor that tracks arrests during protests reported more than 3,000 Russians were for protesting the invasion. As this “once in a lifetime historical event” plays out on television and on social media, we must explain this to a younger generation that has not seen anything like this. Doctors and psychologists report the news is causing anxi-

ety and worry among children. Now is the time to “Keep kids calm,” advised Dr. Meg Meeker, a pediatrician, author, and creator of the Parenting Great Kids series. Her suggestions include considering the age and maturity of the child; if children are under the age of 8, do not say anything unless they ask about the war. Talking about war with children stokes fear that violence might strike home, that their own mother or father might die. People should keep the dialogue simple for older children. Do not over-explain the situation, which could cause more anxiety. Providing reassurances that they are safe, along with the rest of their family, is critical. Families should also be cognizant of when children are in the room and keep the news on only briefly. Viewing scenes of conflict can traumatize young people, fueling young imaginations. As we pray and send support for the innocents impacted by the treacherous invasion of Ukraine, we must remember to educate younger Americans about the dangers of war, and the unlawful aggression of Putin’s military. We can certainly hope the Russian people, who themselves endured a brutal invasion by the Nazis during World War II, will rise and declare this invasion was unacceptable. Should that happen, we just might see another underdog miracle, with democracy holding the line in Ukraine and the Russian people achieving their own end to tyranny.

Middle Division Ping Pong a hallowed tradition

ne of the staples of the Casady Middle Division experience is the fanaticism and energy around Ping Pong. Starting as a simple pastime at breaks and between classes, Ping Pong quickly rose in popularity until a set of rules had to be created and enforced around who could play, when, how many times, and most importantly, when the kids were kicked out and the teachers were allowed to play. After the seventh and eighth graders leave for sports, a select few teachers converge on

the seventh-grade pod to play to their hearts’ content. If you happen to be upstairs in the MD anytime after 2:30 p.m., expect to hear cheers and shouts as the MD teachers battle against one another in the lifeor-death game of Ping Pong. A hallowed break

tradition, students have come up with unofficial rules about what kinds of paddles one can and cannot have, how many steps back from the table one must be at all times, and how many rounds a winner can play without gracefully conceding. Every year there’s a division-wide Ping Pong tournament that takes the best students in grades 5-8 and pits them against each other. The victor of that bracket then goes on to play the winningest teacher in a battle of 11 points, where there is

no mercy and it is every person for themselves. The winner of this match wins the title of Middle Division Ping Pong Champion and extreme bragging rights for a year before they have to hand off their crown to the next year’s victor. Ping Pong plays an essential role in the day-to-day life of the MD. It creates friendships, a healthy sense of competition and adds fun to the school day, if you participate or not. Childhood: The Golden Age of theatre It was the summer of 1984 and a group of children had come together at the Stage Center Theatre in downtown Oklahoma City to participate in a children's program. Working alongside theatre professionals, they would spend the next three weeks experiencing the excitement of putting on a play as they rehearsed and performed "Charlottes Web." organization, and Oklahoma Children's Theatre was born. Thirty-five years later, Oklahoma Children's Theatre is still going strong, fulfilling that same promise of

memories, fun and excitement for children and their families. OCT has grown considerably since then, now delivering many additional programs. This

includes a professional production season for young audiences, acting classes during the school year, educational residencies at elementary schools, a student production season and day camps during all the school breaks. With so much going on, there is always something exciting just around the corner. Children ages 7-13 can go onstage with student production "The Jungle Book," with rehearsals beginning Saturday. Spring Break camps in theatre and art are available from March 14 –

18. There is also an extensive Summer Camp program, with 80+ different camps in theatre, dance, art, magic and more. Three additional summer productions are available for kids eager to show off their acting chops, including "James and the Giant Peach Jr." "Peter Pan," and "Matilda Jr." All weeklong camps run Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.–4 pm each day. ‘Count’ celebrates 94th birthday More than just the character, Count Gregore, John Ferguson is truly an Oklahoma legend, remarkable gentleman and soon to be king of the Oklahoma Senior Follies. John's nearly 60-year career in radio, television and onstage has made him, in the purest sense, an Oklahoma institution. John celebrated his 94th birthday at Juniors Supper Club in OKC, surrounded by a bevy of Oklahoma Senior Follies Beauties, a silver fox, a red siren, a blond bombshell, midnight magic and a forever lovely and famous colleague and friend Jane Hall. He was serenaded by Juniors own Steve Crossley, Linda Piro and Dot Liles. This year John Ferguson is set to be honored at the Hudson Performance Hall on May 20-22 as this year's Oklahoma Senior Follies king.

‘Perfect Shot’ opens at OKCMOA A new, original exhibition of over 80 photographs by iconic sports photographer Walter Iooss Jr. opens on Saturday at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. “The Perfect Shot: Walter Iooss Jr. and the Art of Sports Photography” spans 50 years of Iooss’ career and features athletes as diverse as Hank Aaron, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Arnold Palmer, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Bart Conner, Serena Williams and many more. “OKCMOA has an incredibly strong collection of photography, and our works by Walter Iooss Jr. are no exception,” said OKCMOA President and CEO Michael Anderson, Ph.D. “Iooss blurs the line between fine art and sports photography, and we are honored to organize and present this important retrospective of his work. “‘The Perfect Shot’ will take visitors through many of the most inspiring and memorable

moments in sports history while highlighting the craft and talent that transformed these moments into art.” “The Perfect Shot” is organized into five sections that revolve around universal emotions: anticipation, perseverance, triumph, disappointment and reflection. The sections allow for unique pairings and juxtapositions, finding commonalities in photographs taken decades apart of very different sports and athletes. It also enables viewers, regardless of if they have a background playing or watching sports, to relate to the emotions seen in the photographs. “The Perfect Shot” is on view through Sept. 4.
