MILTON AVERY’s Enduring Influence on Contemporary Painting AT MICAS, FLORIANA

Step off the plane, take a breath, and feel that sunshine... yes, it’s November, but in Malta, the sun still shows up strong. The air’s cooler now, perfect for exploring, while the islands start to hum with anticipation for the festive season ahead. Music, theatre, pop-up events, they’re all happening in the run-up to Christmas, giving you plenty of reasons to get out and soak up the atmosphere.

This month, we’re shining a light on Senglea, one of the historic Three Cities. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, wander its narrow streets, admire the Grand Harbour views, and snap a few shots that will light up your Instagram feed. With its mix of old-world charm and laid-back seaside vibes, Senglea is an easy favourite for anyone exploring the south.

Then we’re off to Gozo, Malta’s quieter, dreamier sister island. Said to be home to Calypso, the nymph who bewitched Odysseus, Gozo still casts a spell of its own. Think hidden beaches, rustic farmhouses, cliffside walks, and candlelit dinners by the sea. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon or just chasing a slower pace, Gozo has you covered, from luxury stays to charming B&Bs tucked away in the countryside.

So settle in, explore, and let the islands work their magic!

The successful hosting of high-profile international events, including the Polti VisitMalta team training camp and the Rolex Middle Sea Race, has once again demonstrated Malta’s ability to attract a diverse range of quality tourism segments while showcasing our islands as a premier destination for global sporting events.

Looking ahead, November brings with it a wealth of new experiences and cultural highlights. Among the most notable developments is that of the Military Tourism, a distinctive new offering that celebrates Malta’s rich and enduring military heritage. This initiative invites visitors to explore the islands’ historic fortifications, war cemeteries, and memorials, offering an authentic insight into Malta’s pivotal role in global military history. Through such initia-

tives, we continue to diversify our tourism product while honouring our national legacy with integrity and respect.

The cultural calendar also continues to flourish with the return of the Malta International Piano Festival, now in its fourth edition. Renowned for its artistic excellence, the festival brings together internationally acclaimed pianists for an inspiring programme of concerts and masterclasses, further reinforcing Malta’s reputation as a destination for world-class performing arts.

Across the channel in Gozo, audiences can look forward to the much-anticipated musical Beauty and the Beast at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre in Victoria, an enchanting production set to delight audiences of all ages. Gozo will also once again host the popular Sweet Tooth Festival, transforming Villa Rundle Gardens into a lively celebration of confectionery and creativity. One-of-a-Kind Milton Brings Seven Major

From 25 October 2025 to 4 April 2026, the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) in Floriana presents Colour Form and Composition: Milton Avery and His Enduring Influence on Contemporary Painting . This landmark exhibition explores the legacy of American artist Milton Avery through over 30 of his works, displayed alongside pieces by Henni Alftan, Harold Ancart, March Avery, Andrew Cranston, Gary Hume, Nicolas Party and Jonas Wood.

The Malta International Contemporary Art Space is hosting a one-of-a-kind showcase of American modern art that has attracted the orbit of seven major American and European artists.

On display is a survey of artworks from Milton Avery (1885-1965), the American master of colour who influenced the young artists who would later anchor the Abstract Expressionist movement.

It was only until the age of 67 that Avery received his first full-scale retrospective museum exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art. By that time, the colour field artists that included Avery’s young friends Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, and Barnett Newman, had become a major force in Abstract Expressionism.

This rare showcase – only the second ever

European showing for Avery following the Royal Academy show in 2022 – is a coup for MICAS, which is showing over 30 of Avery’s works alongside many more from those who credit Avery as an influence: Avery’s own daughter March, an artist in her own right, the YBA and Royal Academician Gary Hume, Henni Alftan, Harold Ancart, Andrew Cranston, Jonas Wood and Nicolas Party.

“The exhibition will take Avery slightly out of his time and allow us to look at him with fresh eyes,” says MICAS artistic director and exhibition curator Edith Devaney, who is digging deep into a great

American epic that spans over 70 years of influence, to look at Milton Avery’s artworks from a fresh perspective.

“This careful selection of works by participating artists will reveal their very personal relationship with Avery’s work, all tapping into very differing aspects of his practice. In exploring the artistic legacy of Milton Avery and how aspects of that legacy remain detectable in the work of some of today’s most celebrated artists, we intend to recontextualise not only his work, but that of all the contemporary participants, and in doing so, acknowledging the notion of art history

not always linear,” Devaney says.

Born in western New York state to a working-class family, Avery was a factory labourer supporting his family until his thirties, while taking night classes at the Connecticut League of Art Students. He met his future wife while both were sketching on the rocks in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Avery and Sally Michel married in 1926, the couple painting side by side in the living room of their onebedroom flat in Manhattan.

By the 1950s, Avery’s work developed from his Impressionist brushwork into broader

fields of dark hues, finding himself at the threshold of abstraction, locking in his subject in ordered shapes, in his own words eliminating and simplifying, “leaving nothing but colour and pattern.”

Summers spent in Provincetown in the company of Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb saw Avery developing more simplified forms, with colours that could deliver the “purity and essence of the idea… expressed in its simplest form.”

This sensational Avery collection at MICAS is unique not just for the wideranging group of contemporary painters,

all of whom cite Avery’s work as an enduring source of inspiration in their work; this survey of his entire career takes viewers through Avery’s influences in American Impressionism, to his late work from the 1950s through to the early 1960s, where having exerted such a profound influence on the emerging Abstract Expressionist painters, he also took much from them.

Haunted Hospital at Esplora Embraces History, Science & Education

If you are visiting Malta between 1 and 5 November this year, set aside some time and experience the Halloween season with a difference: a pleasant combination of history, science, and education is the right recipe for that spooky taste.

Built on History

The building that today serves as the premises of Xjenza Malta has an extraordinary history dating back to the 17th century. In the 19th century, when the Maltese Islands were under British Rule, the main Villa, which was designed in 1675 by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa to serve as

a private summer residence for the Italian Knight and Prior of Capua, Fra Giovanni Bichi, passed into the hands of the Civil Government. In 1827, King George IV granted the Admiralty permission to convert the building into a naval hospital.

The foundation stone of Royal Naval Hospital Bighi was laid on March 23rd, 1830. For years, this hospital provided nursing and medical care to most of the casualties from the Mediterranean during the Crimean Wars, World War I, and World War II.

What to Expect

Perched on the edge of Kalkara’s Grand Harbour, Esplora is known as Malta’s

vibrant interactive science centre, but hidden within its walls lies a rich, centuries-old story waiting to be explored over five days through the themed event Esplora’s Haunted Hospital. Visitors with a curious mind will be immersed into the building's story through atmosphere-laden rooms, learn about medical and health sciences through playful workshops and shows, and enjoy hands-on, interactive activities for everyone; age is not a limit!!

The Haunted Hospital Guided Tour

From mysterious carvings left by patients, including the chilling words of Dante’s Inferno, “All hope abandon ye who enter here”, to legends echoing through the former Insanity Ward just across from the burial site of the hospital.

Discover traces of wartime wounds, anecdotes of soldiers who sought refuge during their convalescence, while witnessing the horrible reality of air raids over the Grand Harbour.

Did you ever wonder what those stone tubs were really for? A journey blending history, mystery, and science — for those daring enough to explore what lies beneath Esplora’s timeless walls.

EXPERIENCE MALTA’S UNIQUE NATIONAL THEATRE 11:00 & 15:00

DAILY VISITS AVAILABLE

Experience Guided Tours of Malta's Historic Theatre

Step inside one of Europe’s oldest working theatres with a tour of Teatru Manoel in Valletta. Discover its rich Baroque history, explore behind the scenes, or enjoy a theatrical twist with the entertaining and immersive Grand Tour led by actor Jeremy Grech.

In the year 1732, a deed was signed by the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena to have several houses in Valletta purchased and converted into a theatre. Over the years the building has been transformed into what we now know as Teatru Manoel. One of the oldest working theatres in Europe, Teatru Manoel has a long and rich history that features operas, plagues, restoration, wars, comedies, and so much more. And if you’ve ever wanted to explore the theatre up close, now’s your chance.

Teatru Manoel offers a variety of theatre tours throughout the week that will allow

guests to learn about this special theatre’s history and encounter the details of the lavishly decorated interior of this Baroque architectural masterpiece.

The first option is a general tour offered by the Teatru Manoel staff. At this tour you’ll get to visit the theatre and learn about how it has changed and evolved since it was built three centuries ago. From learning about the different backstage departments, stage mechanisms, and the intricate baroque design elements, you’ll get a detailed overview of this exciting venue. This tour costs €10 per person, with group booking suggested in advance. Tours are available at various times throughout the day from Monday to Saturday.

If you’re looking for something a bit more elevated and personalised, Teatru Manoel is once again teaming up with House of Tours to bring you ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ in a performance/tour hybrid that is not to be missed. Led by actor and tour guide Jeremy Grech – who has trod the boards at Teatru Manoel himself several times – ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ will allow you to learn historical facts that you might not find in your average history book. Grech, who runs local ‘theatretourism’ company House of Tours, combines his theatrical skills with his certification in tour guiding to create compelling, interactive, and informative tours that really immerse guests in the time and space that they are exploring. The Grand

Tour lasts roughly one hour, happening twice a day every Tuesday, at 11am and 3pm. ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ has received high praise, with one guest calling it “a perfect balance of history and entertainment” and another saying they would “highly recommend it to both locals and foreigners”. Jeremy will take you on an exciting journey through time, and even explain to you his favourite aspects of the theatre, including the building’s impressive endurance, “From the Knights to the French to the British to now…it has refused to go down. Not even the War could touch it!” This is the perfect tour for people looking to learn more about the theatre, those looking for an entertaining hour of fun, and those looking to escape the summer heat. Tickets for the Grand Tour cost €20 per person Normal weekly tours of Teatru Manoel will continue to run alongside the Grand Tour.

Guests are advised that since Teatru Manoel is a working theatre with ongoing rehearsals and other technical work, there are certain times when the main auditorium will be inaccessible, and it may be necessary for tours to be cancelled or rescheduled.

For further information on tour times and tickets, call the Box Office at (+356) 21246389 or drop by in person Monday to Saturday from 10am onwards.

Five Picturesque Streets in Malta

From Sliema and Qawra’s lively promenades to Valletta’s historic streets and the quiet charm of Żabbar and Rabat, these five Maltese streets show the island’s character, history, and everyday life in a truly captivating way.

Dawret il-Qawra, St Paul's Bay

The promenade along the northern coastline offers stunning sea vistas, palm trees, and benches perfect for leisurely strolls or cycling. Nearby landmarks include the historic 17th-century Qawra Tower and the Malta National Aquarium, making it both picturesque and culturally interesting. The area also has a wide range of restaurants, cafés, and accommodations, including seaside resorts.

Sanctuary Street, Żabbar

Located in the southern town of Żabbar, Sanctuary Street has been voted one of Malta’s most beautiful streets. It’s a serene, sun-drenched road lined with honey-coloured stone houses and traditional architecture. The calm atmosphere and symmetry of the buildings make it a great place for lifestyle or architectural photography. If you visit during local festa season, you might also catch the street decorated with colourful banners and lights, a truly local touch.

Tower Road, Sliema

The waterfront promenade is perfect for morning jogs or evening strolls, with cafés and bars along the way. Sunsets here are unforgettable, painting the historic buildings and modern apartments in golden light. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the relaxed Mediterranean vibe, whether sipping coffee, shopping, or simply watching the waves. Tower Road captures the energy and elegance of Sliema, making it a lively yet laidback spot that perfectly blends lifestyle, culture, and coastal charm.

St Lucy Street, Valletta

Just a short walk away, St. Lucy’s Street is one of the most recognisable Instagram spots in Valletta. The street’s steep stone staircase, flanked by traditional balconies and cafés, creates a beautiful sense of depth and movement in photos. Whether you shoot from the top looking down or capture yourself mid-step, it’s a perfect frame of Maltese urban charm. Try visiting around golden hour to make the limestone glow and avoid harsh shadows.

St Paul's Street, Rabat

If you’re looking for something more authentic and less crowded, St Paul's Street in Rabat is a gem. The street is lined with traditional Maltese homes, complete with colourful doors, wroughtiron balconies, and flowering plants. It feels timeless and peaceful — ideal for a more intimate or rustic Instagram aesthetic. Since it’s off the main tourist trail, you can take your time framing the perfect shot without interruptions.

Top Things to See and do in Senglea (Isla)

Senglea, or L-Isla, is one of Malta’s historic “Three Cities,” a small peninsula rich in charm, history, and spectacular harbour views. Though compact, it offers plenty to explore: peaceful gardens, grand churches, ancient fortifications, and winding streets filled with local life. Whether you’re after culture, scenery, or relaxation, Senglea invites visitors to slow down and enjoy its timeless maritime beauty.

Gardjola Gardens

Gardjola Gardens sits at the tip of Senglea’s peninsula, offering stunning panoramic views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. The gardens are peaceful and beautifully maintained, making them a perfect spot to relax or watch the sunset. The most iconic feature is the watchtower “Il-Gardjola,” adorned with carvings of an eye and an ear, symbolizing vigilance and protection. Visitors can enjoy the sea breeze, admire the fortifications, and capture some of the most photogenic views in Malta.

Basilica of the Nativity of Mary

This grand basilica, also known as Il-Bambina Church, is the spiritual heart of Senglea. Built after the Great Siege of 1565, it commemorates Malta’s victory and resilience. The interior features exquisite baroque details, gilded decorations, and the revered statue of the Virgin Mary, “Il-Bambina,” crafted in 1618. Every September, locals celebrate the Festa talMadonna tal-Vitorja, a lively religious festival. The basilica’s atmosphere is calm and reverent, making it an essential cultural and historical stop.

Senglea waterfront

The Senglea waterfront is one of the most scenic and tranquil areas in the Three Cities. Strolling along the promenade reveals charming cafés, bobbing fishing boats, and luxury yachts moored in the marina. The area offers a relaxed, local feel, far from the bustle of Valletta. Visitors can enjoy an espresso by the water, chat with friendly residents, or simply admire the reflections of the old limestone buildings shimmering on the sea. Sunset here is particularly magical.

Fort Saint Michael and the Bastions

Although only remnants of Fort Saint Michael remain, this site once played a vital role in Malta’s defense during the Great Siege of 1565. Its strong bastions guarded the Grand Harbour alongside Fort St Angelo across the water. Visiting the fort area today provides insight into Senglea’s strategic importance and military past. The bastions at the “Spur” offer breathtaking harbour views, illustrating how the Knights of St John designed Senglea as both a fortress and a refuge.

Is-Sirena and St Anne Tunnel

For many, is-Sirena is considered the most picturesque spot in Senglea. This peaceful terrace offers breathtaking views across the Grand Harbour — overlooking Fort St. Angelo in Vittoriosa, the eastern bastions of Valletta, and the harbour’s main entrance. It’s a perfect place to pause, sit, and take in the tranquil beauty of Malta’s maritime heart. Nearby stands the historic St. Anne Tunnel (Il-Mina ta’ Sant’Anna), featuring a small niche dedicated to Our Lady of Porto Salvo. Passing through this stone tunnel connects visitors to the Gardjola Gardens, the scenic bastion terrace along Triq is-Sirena, and the waterfront below.

Dgħajsa tal-pass

A 'dgħajsa tal-pass', (pronounced deye-sa tal pass) is a traditional Maltese water taxi that operates in the harbours of Malta, including Senglea. It historically served as a water taxi for daily commuters and naval personnel, and today, it is mainly a tourist attraction for sightseeing and short trips across the Grand Harbour. You can find these boats at the Senglea waterfront, taking passengers on rides, often to Valletta or Vittoriosa.

GOZO

A TIMELESS ROMANTIC ESCAPE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Gozo’s reputation as a romantic destination is steeped in the legendary myth of Calypso — the nymph who, in Homer’s Odyssey, held Odysseus under her spell when he was shipwrecked on the island. This aura of longing and enchantment was echoed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when travel writers described Gozo as an idyllic and pastoral island with rustic villages, dramatic cliffs, and secluded bays, offering serene retreats for honeymoons and romantic escapes. Today, Gozo stands as a classic romantic destination. With its picturesque beaches, charming boutique hotels, intimate seaside dinners, and growing appeal as a destination wedding venue, the island continues to embody timeless romance in both myth and reality.

If you’re planning a honeymoon or a romantic stay in Gozo, arranging

accommodation is one of the easier tasks. Gozo offers a range of options, from luxury escapes to more budget-friendly stays. Five-star and four-star hotels with all-inclusive resort services, boutique spa facilities, and other luxuries, such as infinity pools overlooking the sea, often offer couples’ packages throughout the year. For a more intimate setting, staying in a typical farmhouse combines authentic rustic charm with comfort, allowing you to create your own perfect moments - think private courtyards and poolside BBQs under the stars. Gozo is also home to a series of unique luxury B&Bs. Whether they’re located in the heart of the city, at the edge of the cliff, or in the middle of the countryside, Gozo’s hospitality is second to none.

Moreover, in Gozo it is easy to rent self-catering apartments or homes in the villages or by the seaside. If you’re combining romantic with wellness, it is

good to know that Gozo is also home to several wellness retreats.

Charting a romantic itinerary is about blending nature, sacred spaces, beaches, and villages, and Gozo offers a diverse range of activities to enjoy. Exploring the island is similar to peeling layer after layer, each revealing new experiences to share. If you love being in nature, start by checking out the stretch of cliffs along the southern side of the island (Ta’ Ċenċ and Sanap cliffs) for an inspiring walk. Other unique places often associated with serenity include the picturesque San Blas beach, Wied il-Għasri, Lunzjata Valley and the salt pans area.

Take the time to discover the sacred spots that the island has to offer. Start with one of the oldest temples in the Mediterranean region, the Ġgantija temples, and then proceed to some show-stopping churches and edifices that the islanders have erected in testimony to their faith and devotion, but do not overlook the small chapels.

Tracing a path to these structures will lead you through shady alleyways winding around magnificent golden basilicas, countryside routes beside shrines and inevitably visiting different villages and towns, each with its own story and squares where you can stop for a snack or lunch. It will be the ideal occasion to indulge in Gozo’s street food, typically in the form of ‘pastizzi’ or ‘ftira’ straight out of the oven of a wood-fired bakery.

A romantic getaway during the summer season is not complete without an aquatic experience. Spending time at the beach, snorkelling in coves, and exploring the many different bays are all on the list, along with more exciting options, such as kayaking, jet skiing and diving.

For the ultimate romantic escape, consider private boat hire and sunset sailing trips.

Beyond the call of the sea, Gozo is a cultural immersion on many fronts. Enjoy the local summer feasts, colourful and noisy celebrations beneath summer skies lit by fireworks, step into Gozo’s opera houses in the golden glow of autumn, where every note lingers like romance in the air, and discover the wine and eco estates, amid the vineyards and olive groves spread over

the terraced valleys. For a more handson experience, visit the studio of a local artisans and take a go at shaping clay on the potter’s wheel or a stint at loom weaving.

When it comes to dining options, Gozo boasts its share of Michelin-recommended restaurants where intimate fine dining intertwines with creative Mediterranean flair. Beyond this finesse, Gozo is also home to many dining establishments serving local cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, meats,

and classic dishes. Restaurants at Xlendi, Marsalforn and Mġarr seafronts are among the most popular on the island. Still, you will also discover some truly special locations nestled on terraces along the coast with breathtaking views, offering al fresco dining in a relaxed and effortlessly romantic vibe, perfect for intimate celebrations and proposals.

Some say Gozo’s name can be translated to mean joy. Perhaps this refers to the delight

that fills the heart of those who escape to its shores and countryside. Maybe it is the joy that is evoked at first light of dawn or that lingers in the golden glow of a sunset.

Perhaps it is carried in the gentle breeze or the playful splash of waves at the beach, the quiet of tranquil walks, the reverence of sacred sites or in the authentic flavours of local cuisine. Gozo is an invitation to fall in love again with the world, with yourself and with each other.

Picture this – your new office is a sun-kissed terrace with breathtaking Mediterranean views. In Malta, seamless connectivity meets a thriving digital nomad community, where fluent English makes integration effortless. With the Nomad Residence Permit, you can live and work remotely for a year, with the option to renew yearly for a maximum four-year stay.

Each year, Condé Nast Traveller, one of the world’s most respected luxury travel publications, invites hundreds of thousands of readers to rate their favourite destinations. The results are a true reflection of travellers’ real experiences, and Valletta’s victory confirms what many

already know: Malta’s capital is a treasure of the Mediterranean.

Described by the magazine as “small but undoubtedly mighty,” Valletta captivated readers with its sun-soaked streets, “openair museum of Baroque architecture,” and its distinctive golden glow. The city’s compact size makes it perfect for exploring on foot, with narrow lanes that dip and weave towards sparkling sea views. As Condé Nast Traveller noted, eagle-eyed visitors may even recognise some corners of the city from major film productions such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

The publication encouraged visitors to experience Valletta during the “balmy dusk hour,” when the limestone buildings radiate warmth and the whole city seems to shimmer. Far from being a static historic site, Valletta is alive with creativity, from its thriving art galleries and cultural festivals to its lively café culture and harbourfront bars.

Beyond its aesthetic charm, Condé Nast Traveller praised Malta for “reinventing what Mediterranean cool looks like.” The city’s appeal, it said, lies in being “fascinating rather than flashy.” Autumn,

in particular, is an ideal time to visit, with temperatures still pleasant and a more relaxed atmosphere than during the height of summer.

The award has sparked national pride. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg shared the accolade on social media, celebrating Valletta’s recognition on the world stage. Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, said the award “positions Valletta at the very forefront of Europe’s most distinguished destinations” and reflects “Malta’s cultural richness and exceptional experiences.” He also thanked visitors and tourism partners for helping shape Malta’s growing reputation.

Adding to the celebrations, The Phoenicia Malta, one of the city’s most iconic hotels, was again featured on Condé Nast Traveller’s prestigious “Rest of Europe” list.

So, if you are considering your next European getaway, make it Valletta. With history, art, cuisine, and sunshine in abundance, Malta’s capital is officially the best city in the world to visit!
