There’s something about May in Malta that feels like a well-kept secret finally ready to be shared. The sun is out, the sea is warming, and while the weather might keep you guessing, it only adds to the sense of adventure. It’s the perfect moment to explore, before summer turns up the heat.
This issue, we’re especially proud to spotlight Reggie Burrows Hodges, whose exhibition Mela is currently being showcased at MICAS. The show is a vivid result of his immersion into Maltese life, an experience that shaped the depth and texture of his work in ways that feel both intimate and expansive. Without that connection, its richness would simply not exist.
Across the islands, there’s no shortage of things to dive into. From playful comedies and live music to exhibitions, hikes, and indulgent food tastings, Malta’s cultural calendar is buzzing. And just when you think it couldn’t get better, we’re already looking ahead. This summer, the islands transform into a global stage, welcoming icons like Michael Bublé and Scorpions alongside a spectrum of sounds from underground beats to chart-topping pop.
And then there’s Gozo, a ferry ride away and a world of its own. Late spring here is pure magic: blooming landscapes, golden evenings, and a slower rhythm that invites you to linger just a little longer.
This and so much more in another edition of Oh My Malta. We couldn’t be happier to welcome you home.

As we welcome the month of May, Malta and Gozo continue to build on the momentum of the spring season, offering a vibrant blend of tradition, innovation, and active experiences that further strengthen our position as a year-round destination.
The month opens with Workers' Day, a national public holiday that reflects the values of community and shared progress. This is followed by a series of traditional village feasts across localities such as Birkirkara, Floriana, Swatar, and Munxar. These festas remain a cornerstone of Maltese cultural life, bringing together residents and visitors alike through vibrant celebrations featuring fireworks, traditional food, the local banda music, and a strong sense of community spirit.
May also highlights Malta’s growing appeal as a destination for lifestyle and niche tourism segments. The return of the Malta Vegan Fest reflects the islands’ evolving and inclusive culinary landscape,
while welcoming a diverse audience interested in sustainability and conscious living.
Sport tourism continues to play a central role, with the hosting of the Island Games, where the global fitness community comes together to experience competition alongside Malta’s unique setting. In parallel, endurance and outdoor sports take centre stage with XTERRA Trail Run World Championship and the Gozo Trail Run, further showcasing the natural landscapes of our islands and reinforcing Malta’s reputation as a destination for active tourism.
The month also provides an opportunity to engage more closely with the public through the Public Service Expo, where the Malta Tourism Authority will also be participating as part of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism stand. Visitors are encouraged to attend and experience a range of interactive initiatives, including engaging games, quizzes, a Virtual Reality experience, and a dynamic scavenger hunt offering both educational insight and an opportunity to connect with Malta’s tourism vision in an accessible and enjoyable way.
May reflects the essence of Malta and Gozo, where tradition meets modernity, and where cultural heritage, innovation, and active experiences come together to create a diverse and compelling tourism offering. It is through this balance that we continue to enhance the visitor experience while strengthening the long-term sustainability of our sector.

Without his immersion into Maltese life, the richness of Californian artist Reggie Burrows Hodges’s experience would have remained inaccessible. Mela is the result of this absorption of Maltese life
Limestone, sea… spectacle. This postcard shorthand tends to be the enduring image of Malta and its saturated narrative as a sun-drenched island.
But in the hands of the Californian artist Reggie Burrows Hodges, that temptation seems to be resisted: in his first European solo exhibition Reggie Burrows Hodges: Mela, opening at Malta International Contemporary Art Space from 9 May to 30 August, Malta is metabolised through his absorption during his extended sojourn on the island.
Spread across MICAS’s vertiginous, tiered galleries, Reggie Burrows Hodges: Mela will unfold through 30 paintings, all produced during Hodges’s time on the island. These are his largest canvases to date – figures surfacing from his signature black grounds from which bodies, gestures, and fragments of labour start becoming visible.
Hodges has long been preoccupied with the themes of memory, labour and work –how histories are carried in the body, and how labour also shapes both landscape and identity. In Malta, those concerns find

a new register, with the contrast of the island’s rugged coastline set against the relentless churn of construction.
Indeed, during his residency, Hodges embedded himself in the rhythms of local life, observing the scenes of construction and excavation, and the quiet persistence of workers reshaping the built environment, as well as bathing rituals along the Sliema coastline, or the waterpolo matches played in seaside villages.
What emerges is a body of work that feels at once intimate and site-bound, attuned to the human effort underpinning Malta’s ongoing transformation and other social traditions.
The exhibition’s title pivots on the ubiquitous Maltese word “mela”, an endlessly elastic Maltese interjection which for Hodges seems to have turned into a sort of threshold: language on the verge of meaning. In the hesitation created when the word “mela” might be used, he sees an opening in which possibility gathers before articulation.
At the exhibition’s core will be a monumental, site-specific canvas that enters into dialogue with The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio, a work indelibly tied to Malta’s cultural imagination. Hodges re-stages its intensity, translating scale and dramaturgy into his own visual language, repositioning Malta’s art historical inheritance within a global present.

Beyond the painted surface, Hodges will also extend his inquiry into sound. Within MICAS’s barrel-vaulted spaces, the artist will provide an installation that draws on ancient musical traditions associated with Malta and Gozo’s Neolithic sites.
Curated by MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney, Mela advances MICAS’s ambition to position Malta as a site of production. Hodges’s response demonstrates the potency of this model: the work, created entirely in Malta, could not have been made elsewhere. As the artist notes, his immersion was not incidental – without it, the richness of the experience would have remained inaccessible.
“This insistence on presence is what ultimately shapes the exhibition’s tone,” says Edith Devaney. “It is not simply an outsider’s gaze cast upon Malta, but a sustained encounter that registers lived texture. Since opening in 2024, MICAS has rapidly established itself as a critical node in the island’s cultural ecology, hosting acclaimed international artists and Maltese artists of the highest standard of excellence. With Hodges, that trajectory continues.”
For travellers exploring Malta’s cultural landscape, MICAS itself is a destination worth discovering. Located within the restored Ospizio complex overlooking the Floriana bastions, the museum blends historic military architecture with contemporary design, offering panoramic views across the harbour and towards Valletta.
For visitors arriving in Malta this summer, stepping into MICAS offers a chance to see the islands through the contemplative lens of Reggie Burrows Hodges, who describes Mela simply as “a poem to Malta”. Certainly enough, like all MICAS exhibitions, this is also something more: a cross-cultural exchange between an American artist and a Mediterranean island, where fresh perspectives always seem to uncover a new layer of history with inspiring interpretations.

If you thought Malta was just about limestone and lagoons, think again. This summer, the archipelago is transforming into a global stage. From the soul-stirring ballads of Michael Bublé to the heavy-metal thunder of the Scorpions, the 2026 calendar is packed with legends.

Late Spring in Gozo is about the essence of an island of joy. With nature in full bloom, longer daylight hours and a peaceful atmosphere, Gozo is perfect for those who want more time to explore and enjoy the outdoors beneath clear skies. It is also about endless afternoons that fuse into golden evenings at a slower pace before the summer rush. Indeed, a holiday in Gozo during May and early June offers so much of Gozo’s authentic lightness and renewal.

The mild present weather typical of the season makes a holiday at this time of the year even more practical. No heavy clothing is needed, although a long-sleeved weatherproof jacket will always be handy. Organising educational and family-friendly experiences at museums, farms and cultural spots is a must. Similarly, hiking and picnics, along with a dose of outdoor fun, are simple pleasures that go a long way. To this, one has to add beautiful beach days, soaking up the sunshine just before the island’s bays and beaches get busier for summer. Even families with younger children will feel more relaxed, watching over their kids at the seaside will be easier. The great outdoors can be a real antidote to all sorts of ailments, and if your intent is also a digital detox from the screens, this time around, you have nature on your side.
Adventurers looking for a more authentic, offthe-beaten-path adventure will be pleasantly surprised to discover that Gozo in spring offers the chance to explore hidden spots, discover secret beaches, and visit scenic viewpoints before the crowds arrive. Explorers will enjoy sunset and sunrise hikes at places like Ta’ Ċenċ and Dwejra, cycling trails, and other adventures, such as visiting Comino. Comino can be the island of adventure, especially if you kayak to the island, explore its coast, and beach the kayak in one of its bays to do some hiking around the island. Water sports are another thrilling option to consider. Spring brings back the diving season, and one must always remember that Gozo has a unique set of diving attractions lying beneath the surface.
Beyond all this, springtime is also a time when Gozo’s nightlife options come out of hibernation. While cafes, bars and casual hangouts are open all year round, springtime is also typically associated with more parties on the island, along with more events at rooftop and seaside bars. Keen photographers and Instagram enthusiasts will have a field day in Gozo at this time of year, when the spring colours are at their best, and there is a sense of real freedom before the island gets busy.
Those seeking a laid-back pace, with comfortable sightseeing and leisurely exploration, Gozo in springtime is about mindfulness and slow living. Gozo is an ideal destination for those seeking wellness activities
such as spa sessions, gentle yoga by the coast, or wellness walks. If wellness walks are out of reach, you can still enjoy scenic drives along Gozo’s country and coastal roads, still devoid of the summer tourists. Similarly, dining at outdoor spots is less hectic, and securing a table at seafront locations and outdoor terraces is easier.
Spring is all about the mild weather and an amazing outdoor experience. Days are easy on the body and mind, and whether kissed by the warm sun or tingled by a cool sea breeze, the outdoors provides the best rejuvenating experience for all types of travellers. It’s not only about the countryside, but the swimming season will technically be open, and it’s not about dipping your toes in the crystal clear waters, but also about boat rides and ending the days with golden sunset moments that touch the heart, in a vibe that, while active, is not exhausting.
Get set by checking out accommodation options and you’ll soon be on your way to a spring holiday in Gozo. You’ll be returning home with memories of a picturesque, peaceful experience, refreshed and energised. Somewhere along the way, you realise you’ve pressed a ‘reset button’.

In Mosta, the iconic Mosta Dome is a must-visit landmark for tourists to the island, celebrated for its vast dome, rich history, artistic treasures, and panoramic views.
In the heart of Malta lies the bustling town of Mosta, home to one of the archipelago’s most remarkable churches, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This magnificent landmark, widely known as the Mosta Dome or Rotunda, is an essential stop for visitors exploring the island.
Inspired by the design of the Pantheon in Rome, architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé gave the basilica its own distinctive character rather than creating a replica. Its vast dome, one of the largest unsupported domes in the world, captivates visitors with its scale, harmony, and ornate decoration.
Constructed between 1833 and 1860, the basilica stands as a testament to community dedication. Much of the work was carried out voluntarily by local residents over many years. Remarkably, the previous parish church remained in use within the new structure until construction was completed.
Today, the basilica welcomes visitors throughout the week, with extended hours on selected days. Visits may be spiritual, cultural, or a blend of both.
For religious visitors, the basilica is an expression of devotion. Its grand architecture and richly decorated interior inspire contemplation and praise.
Cultural visitors find an equally powerful experience in its artworks, distinctive design, impressive dimensions, and unique atmosphere.

Visitors may also spend quiet moments in prayer in the peaceful space behind the main altar, where small gatherings and private Holy Mass celebrations can be held.
Exploration continues beyond the interior. From the roof above the portico, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Mosta and its surroundings, while the internal circular balcony reveals the dome’s impressive geometry and decorative patterns.
At ground level, a World War Two shelter beneath the church parvis offers insight into
Malta’s wartime history, complemented by an exhibition of authentic artefacts of traditional local life and crafts.
Guided tours extend beyond the basilica to historic chapels and other heritage sites around Mosta and its outskirts. A visit can conclude at the Dome Visitors Centre steps away, offering souvenirs, a cafeteria, and traditional Maltese food to round off the experience.

May is one of the most rewarding times to experience Malta from the water. The weather is beautifully warm without the intense heat of peak summer, offering long, sunny days balanced by a gentle sea breeze. It’s the kind of climate that invites visitors to spend hours outdoors, whether swimming, sunbathing, or simply relaxing on deck, without feeling overwhelmed by the heat.
Beyond the well-known sights, exploring Malta by boat reveals a quieter, more authentic side of the islands. The changing colours of the sea, the rugged cliffs, and the sense of openness create a truly immersive experience that stays with visitors long after their trip ends. Whether it’s discovering a hidden inlet, enjoying a refreshing drink on deck, or watching the sun dip below the horizon, each moment feels personal and unhurried.
What sets this experience apart is the flexibility it offers. Guests are not bound by rigid itineraries; instead, each trip unfolds at a natural pace, guided by personal preferences and the rhythm of the sea. Some may choose to spend hours swimming and snorkelling in calm, shallow waters, while others might prefer to cruise along the coastline, taking in panoramic views and capturing unforgettable photos.
There is also a strong sense of privacy and comfort that enhances the entire journey. Away from crowded ferries and busy beaches, guests can fully relax and enjoy quality time with their companions. Adding to the appeal is the opportunity to experience Malta’s coastline at different times of day. Morning charters offer calm seas and soft light, perfect for swimming and exploring, while afternoon trips bring a lively atmosphere under the warm Mediterranean sun. Sunset cruises, however, remain a favourite, as the sky transforms into shades of gold and crimson, creating a breathtaking backdrop for an unforgettable evening at sea.
For travellers seeking something beyond the ordinary, a private charter transforms a simple day out into a highlight of their time in Malta, one defined by freedom, comfort, and unforgettable scenery. This May, rather than simply visiting Malta, visitors are invited to experience it from a whole new perspective, out on the water, where the islands reveal their most captivating side.

It is, in every sense, a bold reimagining of how history can be seen, felt, and experienced.
Why did Q Securities choose Malta for expansion? Branch Director Filip Suchta shares how agility, expertise, and cultural alignment made Malta a strategic hub for growth in alternative investment services.
When Q Securities started evaluating where to expand its European operations, Malta was one of several jurisdictions under consideration.
“It was not the most obvious choice. At the time, we had already successfully launched our depositary services in Poland and Luxembourg. So naturally, we were comparing Malta with some of the most established financial centres in Europe,” says Filip Suchta, Branch Director and Malta Country Head at Q Securities.
Q Securities, an independent investment firm and brokerage house specialises in depositary services for alternative investment funds. Acting as a critical safeguard within the investment ecosystem, the firm oversees asset safekeeping, cash flow monitoring, and regulatory

compliance for funds spanning private equity, real estate, infrastructure, hedge funds, and increasingly, digital assets.
Our company’s role is not to compete with fund managers, but to support them. We are a dedicated depositary partner and our sole focus is on the depositary side of the fund lifecycle by ensuring oversight, protecting investors, and helping maintain the integrity of the market,” he adds.
After a comprehensive review process more than three years ago, Malta began to stand out.
“Malta ticked a lot of boxes on our list,” notes Mr Suchta. “Beyond regulatory standards and EU access, Malta offers flexibility, speed, and a shared philosophy of delivering high-quality financial services.”
The fundamentals were strong: a robust regulatory framework aligned with EU directives, authorisation by the Malta Financial Services Authority, and access to the European single market. But as Mr Suchta emphasises, those were not the decisive factors.

“What really made the difference only became clear once we were on the ground,” he says.
Q Securities officially launched operations in Malta in 2023, obtaining a full depositary license to service alternative investment funds. The move was also strategic: the Maltese market had a relatively limited number of depositary providers, creating an opportunity to deliver high-quality, independent services in a growing sector.
“When we arrived, it became very obvious
that despite coming from different parts of Europe, we share a common business culture with Malta,” he explains. “It’s client-centric, focused on quality, and able to deliver results quickly.”
That cultural alignment proved decisive.
“In other words, we came for the regulatory framework and stayed because we found a place that shares our philosophy in the way we believe business should be done,” he adds.
And in an industry often dominated by scale and legacy institutions, Malta offered Q Securities a different value proposition, one that Mr Suchta describes as “nimble strength.”
“This means direct access to the EU market with a strong regulatory framework, but also the flexibility and speed of a smaller jurisdiction,” he says. “Basically, setting up business was quicker, we enjoyed direct access to the most important decision-makers and we found a genuine can-do attitude.”
This agility is particularly important for firms like Q Securities, which operate in the space of alternative investments which is constantly evolving.
The company provides services across a wide range of fund strategies, including emerging areas such as digital assets and tokenised investments - segments that require both technical sophistication and regulatory adaptability.
“With some of the more traditional financial centres, adoption can be slower.
And this is where Malta should continue to really differentiate itself, especially in innovative sectors like digital assets.”
Mr Suchta notes how Malta has made a deliberate effort to position itself as a forward-looking financial hub, particularly in fintech and blockchain-related industries. For Q Securities, this has created an environment where innovation can coexist with strong regulatory oversight.
“It’s particularly important for new and innovative fund strategies. Malta has the experience and capabilities to become a financial centre properly equipped for these types of structures.”
The country’s workforce has also played a key role in supporting the firm’s growth.
“It’s an English-speaking environment with a highly skilled talent pool. Genuinely, there is strong expertise in investment services, which allows us to build teams that understand the complexity of what we do.”
Today, operating across three European jurisdictions namely Poland, Luxembourg, and Malta, Q Securities services hundreds of alternative investment funds, managing billions in assets under custody.
Its Malta office continues to expand, both in terms of client base and strategic importance within the group.
“We are proud to be part of an industry where excellence is not just an aspiration but a standard. And like Malta, we’re just getting started.”

If you’ve spent even a little time in Malta, you’ve probably heard someone mention a fenkata. It’s one of those words that pops up again and again, especially when locals are talking about food as it’s often referred to as the island's national dish.
So, what is it exactly? In simple terms, fenek means rabbit in Maltese, and a fenkata is a full-on rabbit feast. It’s not just a dish, it’s an occasion. Rabbit has long been a staple here, known for its delicate flavour and tender white meat, and it’s widely considered one of Malta’s most traditional foods.
Go back a few centuries and things looked rather different. Malta didn’t have much land for grazing, so raising livestock wasn’t easy. Meat was mostly reserved for the upper classes, while everyone else relied heavily on fish from the surrounding sea.
That changed when restrictions on hunting rabbits were lifted during the time of the Knights of St John. Suddenly, rabbit became accessible to ordinary people, and it didn’t take long for it to become a favourite. Over time, it turned into something more than just a meal, it became something people gathered to celebrate.
There are even colourful mentions of rabbits in Malta’s past. Stories tell of artists causing a stir by eating rabbit pie in the 1500s, and court records from the early 1600s mention stolen meals that included rabbit.
Later on, under British rule, hunting became even more widespread, especially as men were encouraged to join local militias and were given firearms. By the early 20th century, keeping and raising rabbits was both a pastime and a practical source of food.
A proper fenkata isn’t something fast. It’s a

long, sociable meal, usually enjoyed in a rustic setting, often in the countryside rather than a polished city restaurant. Think simple wooden tables, plenty of conversation, and a steady flow of local wine. Forget being overly formal with cutlery, this is the kind of meal where you roll up your sleeves and get stuck in.
The food itself usually arrives in stages. It’s designed to feed a crowd, and generously so. Most fenkatas start with a plate of spaghetti tossed in a rich rabbit sauce, slow-cooked with tomatoes, garlic, herbs and sometimes peas. While you’re waiting, there might be small plates to nibble on, perhaps fried offal, snails, or other traditional bites.
Then comes the main event. Rabbit is typically served either fried with plenty of garlic or
as a hearty stew cooked in wine, tomatoes and bay leaves. It’s often accompanied by potatoes and a few simple vegetables. And the portions? Let’s just say you’ll want to arrive hungry. No one leaves a fenkata feeling peckish!
You can find rabbit on menus across Malta, but if you want the real experience, you’ll need to head a little off the tourist trail. The best fenkatas are usually found in the countryside, especially in places like Mgarr, Bahrija, and Dingli.
In fact, Mgarr is often dubbed the island’s fenkata hub, with several long-standing spots known for doing it properly. If you’re keen to experience Malta through its food, a fenkata is well worth your time.
