Basic Life Support (BLS) courses are designed to reverse pulseless arrest, while Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) algorithms focus on preventing deterioration in unstable patients. However, most dental providers are not equipped, credentialed, or sta ed to implement these advanced interventions in the dental setting. In addition, many commercially available “dental emergency kits” contain costly medications and supplies that are unfamiliar and impractical for dental teams. This course addresses these challenges by introducing streamlined, evidence-informed emergency response workflows tailored specifically to the dental o ce. Led by an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor, the course emphasizes practical, team-based approaches that operate within the dental provider’s scope of training and available resources. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to recognize and respond to both common and uncommon medical emergencies using cost-e ective equipment and simplified protocols. Attendees will also receive two sets of practical handouts containing o ce-specific emergency supply lists and algorithm cards designed for real-world dental application by either basic providers, or those with advanced training.
Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate accurate and e cient acquisition of vital signs using cost-e ective, readily available equipment.
Assemble and implement a practical dental o ce emergency kit that can be e ectively utilized by all clinical sta .
Explain the underlying pathophysiology of common medical emergencies encountered in dental practice to support appropriate clinical responses.
Establish clearly defined team roles and responsibilities to enhance coordination and performance during emergency situations.
Apply appropriate emergency monitoring and management strategies based on provider training level, including: basic provider protocols using essential equipment and algorithms germane to all dental providers; and advanced provider protocols for clinicians with advanced monitoring and venipuncture capabilities.
Note: This program meets the Ohio State Dental Board’s criteria for dental hygienists and general supervision.

What does functional aesthetics have to do with a worn dentition? A clear majority of clinicians around the world understand that tooth wear is a sign of aging but overlook the fact that there are other causes of tooth wear. How does anterior tooth wear a ect your restorative outcome? To answer this question, a patient’s function needs to be understood so that the outcomes for our patients can be measured. Not understanding the relevance will bite you in the end in the form of frustration, unpredictable results, and failures. To comprehend functional aesthetic dentistry, one must obtain information pertaining to the patient’s joints, muscles, occlusion and teeth. The procurement of this information allows the dentist to become a physician of the entire masticatory system. The fundamentals of occlusion are directly related to function. In other words, form does follow function.
The understanding of how the masticatory system functions in relation to the dentition allows the dentist to provide treatment that is not only predictable, but natural, and long lasting. One of the goals of a perfected occlusion is to have equal intensity contacts on all teeth while the joints (TMJ) are seated in centric relation. In addition, the anterior teeth also play an important role in establishing correct occlusion and the envelope of function. When anterior teeth are restored correctly, the patient’s envelope of function must be correctly restored to achieve natural movements of the mandible. The lecture will provide information with illustrations on how functional aesthetics can allow dentists to practice and deliver results that are predictable. The very goal of using these principles is not to only have excellent aesthetic, but to have consistent predictable long-lasting results.
Learning Objectives:
Understand functional occlusion and functional aesthetics.
Learn how to achieve predictable design for aesthetic results.
Understand the triangle of occlusion.

The need for hard and soft tissue augmentation in preparation for implant placement and restoration is determined at the time of tooth extraction. The more severe the defect, the more hard and soft tissue reconstruction will be needed to create an esthetic result, especially in the anterior. Techniques in guided bone regeneration (GBR) and soft tissue augmentation have improved significantly over the years. Our ability to augment bone is now more predictable and successful; however, traditional techniques utilized during socket reconstruction can actually have a negative e ect on the final esthetic result.
These include papilla loss, loss of keratinized tissue, and apical migration of the gingival margin. The purpose of this course is to educate clinicians on how to predictably manage and enhance the soft tissue from extraction all the way to final restoration in even the most severe defects.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the periodontal anatomy that is being preserved during extraction and socket reconstruction to achieve an ideal esthetic result.
Perform multiple techniques and utilize novel materials, both allograft and xenograft, to preserve and enhance the natural anatomy at the time of extraction.
Understand the rationale for technique selection based on the situation presented.
Discuss proper treatment timelines based on technique selection.
Use described techniques and materials to improve the health and esthetics of dental implants at the time of placement.
Note: A hands-on workshop accompanies this lecture, see Course Code T18.

Want to learn about “permanent lifestyle change” and QUENCH your patients’ flames & their disease risk? There is an avalanche of evidence demonstrating the connection between your patients’ mouths with their modern lifestyle habits: lack of sleep (zaps their discipline), shift work (after four night-shifts blood sugar is elevated), poorly managed stress (shows up in every cell of their body), overeating (high fat & processed food boosts inflammation), and sedentary living (did you know “Sitting is the New Smoking?”). Restoring a worn dentition can be one of the most challenging and frustrating procedures for any dentist. However, understanding a patient’s function can clearly help the dentist overcome boundaries that were not evident at first. This requires the dentist to follow a predictable protocol that delivers a result that not only is comfortable but functional.
This lecture will be a continuation of Part 1, but with an emphasis of restoring worn teeth with function as the primary driving force. One of the goals of function is to perfect the occlusion. That is to have equal intensity contacts on all teeth while the joints (TMJ) are seated in centric relation. The lecture will provide information with illustrations on how to restore worn teeth. This process will help the Dentist understand how to restore worn teeth with predictability and success.
Learning Objectives:
Discover how to manage a worn dentition after restoring.
Understand the importance of incisal edge position.

Contemporary Multimodal Analgesia in Dentistry: Mechanisms, Medications, and Modern Pain Control Strategies
Steve D. Shu ebarger, DDS
Thursday, September 17 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
CE Hours: 3
OSDB Category: Dental Education and Scientific Courses –unlimited
Dentistry has appropriately pivoted from opioid-centric pain management toward ibuprofen and acetaminophen combination therapy. While this shift has improved both safety and analgesic outcomes, it has also exposed important knowledge gaps in the indications, contraindications, formulations, dosing strategies, and overall pharmacology of NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and corticosteroids.
Simultaneously, a new class of non-narcotic analgesics has emerged in the acute pain management space, further expanding therapeutic options. This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based review of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles essential for rational prescribing in dentistry. Participants will explore traditional and novel opioids, steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and key adjunctive agents—gaining practical, evidence-based strategies to optimize analgesia, reduce risk, and improve patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Describe essential pharmacologic principles of analgesic agents used in dentistry, including mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics.
Evaluate the risks and benefits of NSAIDs and other non-opioid analgesics in patients with medical comorbidities and/or prior adverse drug reactions.
Analyze the impact of appropriate dosing strategies and shorter durations of therapy on complications associated with analgesic prescribing.
Incorporate additional mechanisms of action into multimodal a nalgesic regimens, when clinically justified, to optimize management of acute dental pain.
Apply structured, evidence-based pain management strategies that e ectively control dental pain while minimizing the risk of misuse, abuse, diversion, and medication-related complications.
Note: This program meets the training requirement for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registrants and license holders when combined with five hours of education from courses with similar content provided by the ODA or other DEA-approved training organizations.

Filling In the Gaps: Using Dental Implants for Complete Dentistry
Neeraj Khanna, DDS
Friday, September 18

CE Hours: 3
OSDB CE Category: Dental Education and Scientific Courses – unlimited
Dental implants have changed our approach to treatment recommendations for missing teeth for the past several decades. This change has become accepted universally with patients requesting dental implants as a viable option. However, when patients are seeking this treatment, it is paramount that the dentist understands the restorative outcome before any dental implants are placed. Whether you are placing your own dental implants or simply referring your patient to specialists, the restorative outcome must be understood first.
The concept of “Complete Dentistry” teaches Dentists to predictably restore an occlusion to fulfill five requirements. Part of fulfilling these requirements is to consider replacing missing or hopeless teeth with dental implants predictably to produce a result that is complementary to a stable occlusion. We will discuss how dental implants can enhance your restorative outcomes with emphasis on proper sequencing, placement, and restorative options. The cases discussed will be multidisciplinary in nature with various scenarios.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the boundaries of when to place dental implants.
Learn the sequencing of dental implant placement.
Communicate better with your patients about placement of dental implants.

Surcharging in Dental
Practices | The Pros, Cons, and Regulations
Phil Nieto
Thursday, September 17
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
CE Hours: 1
OSDB CE Category: Non-clinical, Dental Practice Related –limited
AGD Subject Code 550
Fee: Free
Presented by Best Card
Recommended Audience: Dentists, O ce Managers, Front O ce Sta
Explore the impact of surcharging, where patients cover the credit card processing fee instead of the dental practice. This approach, often marketed as “credit card processing for free,” has gained traction among some payment providers, but understanding the full implications is essential for making an informed decision.
Surcharging can have a strong impact on patient perceptions and financial outcomes, particularly in dental practices where higher average transaction amounts lead to more noticeable fees. This potentially pushes patients to seek care elsewhere and risks long-term revenue from patients who may otherwise stay with a practice for years. In this course, we’ll discuss the rules, regulations, and the pros and cons of surcharging to help you make an informed decision.
Learning Objectives:
Obtain Comprehensive Knowledge of Surcharging Rules: A clear understanding of the specific regulations and legal frameworks that govern passing credit card fees on to patients.
Analize Financial Outcomes: An analysis of the "pros and cons" of surcharging, helping you weigh immediate fee savings against the potential risk of losing long term patient revenue.
Gain Insight into Patient Psychology: An understanding of how surcharges impact patient perceptions, particularly for high value dental procedures where transaction fees are most noticeable.
Understand Strategic Decision-Making Tools: Practical guidance to help your practice make an informed choice on whether "credit card processing for free" is the right fit for your specific patient base and business goals.
