introduction
I grew up in the rural hillsides of Holmes County, Ohio, where the Amish still live and the charm of how things
once were done is still present.
Both my parents were from the city and had moved to the countryside for a simpler lifestyle.
While I was growing up, my mom used cloth diapers, grew her own herb garden and cooked completely from
scratch. My father successfully ran a thriving egg business.
During our first five years in Holmes County, we lived in a home with an Amish family. What an incredible
experience this turned out to be! We helped each other and learned techniques that the Amish follow regularly
for a more natural lifestyle.
The Amish pride themselves on doing things without technology or the use of modern amenities. A few
examples passed onto us were disinfecting our clothes by hanging them out to line-dry in the sun, naturally
bleaching our clothes with some lemon juice and the sun and cleaning the windows with newspapers. We also
learned some great gardening tips.
The Amish weren’t the only people who influenced us; my grandma did, too! She liked to use natural solutions
whenever possible. She taught us to use vinegar on a bee sting to stop the pain. It was her magic potion that
stopped our stomachs from hurting. Her natural techniques and love greatly influenced how I grew up.
I went off to college. Being the independent person that I am, I thought the modern amenities presented in front
of me were the way things should be done from this point on. I adopted some lifestyle choices that were really
bad for my health and my environment.
After college, I married; and in 19 months I went from having zero kids to three girls. It’s funny how quickly life
can change. I still thought that my so-called new and improved ways of doing things were safer and easier,
even though I was using chemicals. Everything changed when one of my crawling babies made her way over to
a bucket of cleaning solution on the floor and stuck her hands in it. I gasped. It happened in a split second! Since
I didn’t know whether she’d put her hands in her mouth, I immediately contacted Poison Control. Thankfully,
she was okay, but from that moment, my attitude changed.

I had a family now and three beautiful girls to protect, so my decisions affected all of us. I stuck my nose into the best books out there. I found my way back to my roots and embraced a natural lifestyle once again. I felt good knowing that my girls were crawling on floors without a trace of any chemicals. I studied up on natural solutions for our health as well. One of my daughters and I suffer from a skin disorder. It was recommended that we live the cleanest and greenest way possible, including the medications that we choose. Once again, this was a change for us. I didn’t realize that some medicines prescribed by our doctors could actually be harmful to our health and that there were better alternative healing methods. Instead of running to the doctor, we soothed our skin disorder with natural creams. I also discovered a natural way to end my 10-year insomnia battle and I even got rid of a chronic ear infection that an ear specialist could not. I was shocked by how effective these solutions were! They often worked better than prescribed medications. Over the years, I have come up with a great many natural solutions that my family and I have used in our home and for our health. I am honored to share them with you! Here’s wishing you and your family good health and happiness.

Lemon Dish Soap
When making homemade dish soap, you want suds! This solution has suds, cuts through grease and softens your hands. It is important to note that it is best not to use essential oils in this recipe, as they can alter the effectiveness. Plus, it already has a great natural pine and lemon scent.
Yield: about 3 1⁄4 cups (770 ml) 2 cups (473 ml) filtered water
In a large bowl, warm up the filtered water. Add the salt and stir until it is fully
1 tbsp (15 g) + 1 tsp (5 g) kosher salt
dissolved. Next, add in the Sal Suds, lemon juice and aloe vera and stir until
1 cup (237 ml) Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds
well blended. The dish soap will thicken immediately. Pour into an old dish soap container and use as you would any dish soap.
1 whole lemon, juiced 2 tbsp (28 g) pure aloe vera
Did you know… Lemon juice helps disinfect and also acts as a natural degreaser. Pure aloe vera is an incredible hand moisturizer in this dish soap.
When using liquid castile soap or Dr. Bonner’s Sal Suds, you can easily thicken certain solutions by adding a bit of kosher salt.

Powder Laundry Detergent
One of the quickest ways to save money in the home is to make your own laundry detergent. It takes just minutes, and the ingredients are reasonably priced.
Yield: 3 cups (540 g) ½ cup (103 g) baking soda
Mix together all the ingredients and store in a dry container.
1 cup (203 g) washing soda
For high-efficiency washing machines, use 1 tablespoon (13 g) per load. Pour
1 cup (203 g) borax
directly over clothes. If using hot water, there is no need to dissolve. If using warm
or cold water, dissolve 1 tablespoon (13 g) of detergent with 1 cup (237 ml) of very
½ cup (38 g) pure soap flakes
hot water and fully dissolve before adding it to the laundry.
20 drops lemon essential oil (optional)
Use ¼–½ cup (51–103 g) per load for non-high-efficiency washing machines.
Dissolve in 2 cups (473 ml) hot water if washing in warm or cold water.
Extra Tip… Did you forget some laundry in the washing machine overnight? Add a few drops of lemon oil to a rinse cycle and it will no longer smell.
Store-bought laundry detergent can be pricey! You can easily make your own laundry detergent for a fraction of the cost with only a few quality ingredients.

Streak-FrEe Window Cleaner (IndOor and OutdOor) Cleaning a window seems to be an easy task, but there are a few key rules to follow for getting a streak-free window.
Yield: indoor windows: 3 cups (710 ml), outdoor windows: 1 gallon (4 L) indOor windows
For indOor windows
2 cups (473 ml) warm water
In a spray bottle, mix together the water and hydrogen peroxide. Place a little
1 cup (237 ml) 3% food-grade hydrogen
rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad and remove dirt, smudges, fingerprints and
peroxide
anything else that might be on the window. Be sure to do this before you use the hydrogen peroxide and water mixture.
Rubbing alcohol
Spray the window with the mixture. With a microfiber cloth, start at the top of the
Microfiber cloth or newspaper
window and wipe from left to right, working all the way to the bottom. If you do
outdOor windows
not have a microfiber cloth, use an old newspaper.
1 gallon (4 L) hot water
For outdOor windows
A few squirts of Lemon Dish Soap
Use a squeegee for bigger jobs and outdoor windows. Try to find a squeegee that
(page 34)
has a scrubbing bar on one side. Dip the scrubbing bar in the hot water and soap solution, or wet the scrubbing bar with hot water and add a little dish soap directly to the scrubber. Wash the windows with the soapy mixture. With the squeegee side, start at the top and work your way down the window in an “S” stroke. Dry your squeegee after each stroke with a lint-free towel or microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, or to get paint chips and other outdoor elements off the window, use a razor blade to gently scrape them. Test a small spot of the window first to make sure you won’t scratch it.
The key to getting streak-free windows is to remove the dirt, smudges and fingerprints with a little rubbing alcohol first.

ALl-Natural Head Lice Treatment
Having lice doesn’t mean you are dirty; these bugs can cling to any hair. “Super lice” is a new strain that is resistant to common chemicals used to treat lice outbreaks. We’re fortunate that there is a natural solution that can get rid of them once and for all.
Yield: lice powder: 1⁄4 cup (52 g), lice protective spray: 1 cup (237 ml) ¼ cup (52 g) food-grade diatomaceous
Mix together the diatomaceous earth and tea tree essential oil. Place a small
earth
amount in your hands and massage into the hair and scalp. Make sure to cover all
10 drops melaleuca essential oil (tea
areas. Diatomaceous earth can create a lot of dust, so you may want to put a mask
tree oil)
on the person’s mouth and nose while applying.
1 cup (237 ml) witch hazel
Leave on the hair overnight. Wash the hair the next morning and dry it with a blow
dryer. Use a lice comb to remove any eggs or nits.
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Make a preventative spray of 1 cup (237 ml) witch hazel and 10 drops eucalyptus
10 drops rosemary essential oil
plus 10 drops rosemary essential oils. Liberally spray daily on dry or wet hair, then
style as usual.
Repeat the same process for two more days or as needed.
Did you know… Diatomaceous earth effectively kills lice by puncturing their
exoskeletons, which causes them to dry out and die.
Certain plant oils may work to help prevent lice. Several of these oils are rosemary, citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus and lemongrass.
