Charlotte Maxwell Clinic

A place of healing, for everyone who needs it. Since 1991, Charlotte Maxwell Clinic (CMC) has offered free integrative care to low- income and under-served women facing cancer — because everyone, regardless of income, deserves treatments that soothe body, mind, and spirit. Our model brings together volunteer acupuncturists, massage therapists, nutrition educators, and movement teachers to reduce side effects, build strength and resilience, and restore dignity to women on their cancer journey.

How we began

CMC is named after Charlotte Maxwell, a public health pioneer who was diagnosed with cancer in her early 50s. While chemotherapy slowed the spread of her cancer, the combination of her treatment and the cancer itself left her depleted. To ease these effects, she turned to complementary health therapies, which helped her feel stronger, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Before her death in 1988, Charlotte expressed a wish: that all individuals with cancer could access compassionate complementary care.

What we do

We provide a coordinated menu of complimentary therapies that support people through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery: acupuncture, herbal medicine, therapeutic massage, nutrition counseling, yoga and movement, relaxation and breathwork, and education workshops Our services are free at the point of care and delivered by trained volunteers who understand trauma, cultural humility, and the realities of navigating cancer while low on resources. These services relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and give clients practical tools they can use as they confront cancer.

Our impact

Year after year we’ve expanded services and volunteers to meet growing demand. Since COVID, we’ve had steady growth in the number of clients seeking services, client visits, volunteer engagement, and trainings — evidence that our model works and that the community keeps leaning in to support it.

Plans for 2026

In 2026 we’re focused on increasing community outreach and welcoming more clients to access our services. We’re expanding our space to be able to provide a wider variety of offerings, including group workshops and classes so that clients in active treatment can heal in community with those in survivorship. Finally, we’re deepening our partnerships so we can better provide wrap-around services for our clients and comprehensive training for our volunteer practitioners.
