Everyone is welcome at Derby Theatre, and we want all audience members to feel as comfortable as possible. Accessible performances and services as follows:
BSL Interpreted and BSL Integrated Performances
We offer BSL interpretation for all Made in Derby shows and selected tours, often by TheatreSign. Some performances are BSL integrated, where signing performers appear on stage in costume, fully woven into the action for a richer, more inclusive experience.
Captioned Performances
Spoken dialogue is displayed as text on a screen during selected performances, including all Made in Derby main house shows. Some productions also use The Difference Engine, which streams captions to your smart phone or tablet.
Audio Described Performances
Live verbal commentary is provided through headsets, describing visual elements during natural pauses in dialogue. Available for all Made in Derby and some touring productions.
Touch Tours (included in the ticket price) are offered 75 minutes before these performances, giving blind and visually impaired patrons a chance to explore the set, costumes, and props.
Relaxed Performances
These performances offer a more informal and supportive environment, ideal for anyone who finds traditional theatre settings challenging. Adjustments may include softer lighting and sound, a relaxed approach to audience movement and noise and access to a chill-out space throughout the performance.
Dementia-Friendly Performances
These offer a supportive environment for people living with dementia and their companions. There’s a relaxed attitude to movement and noise, low house lighting, a quiet space available throughout and staff on hand trained as Dementia Friends.
