BRINGING COMFORT, CARE, AND CLINICAL EFFICIENCY TOGETHER

IN THE JOHN RADCLIFFE NEWBORN CARE UNIT

As anyone working in newborn care knows, every detail in a Newborn Care Unit matters. From infection control to clinical workflow to the emotional wellbeing of parents every choice has an impact. So, when the Occupational Therapy team at the John Radcliffe Hospital’s Newborn Care Unit approached us, they weren’t simply looking to “upgrade some recliners.” They were looking for seating that

could fully support their mission: helping family’s bond safely and comfortably with their babies, while giving staff the flexibility and efficiency they need.

Thanks to the incredible support of SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents), the Newborn Care Unit was able to explore and invest in solutions that would genuinely make a long-term difference.

THE CHALLENGE

The Newborn Care Unit had been using standard recliners for years, but they were no longer meeting the needs of the department. Parents and staff needed something better something clinically robust, comfortable, and intuitive.

A few key issues stood out:

Manoeuvrability & Access: Standard recliners were heavy, awkward, and difficult to move quickly out of the way during emergency cot-side access. In a Newborn Care Unit environment, seconds matter chairs simply had to be more mobile.

Comfort & Functionality for Kangaroo Care: Parents come in all shapes, sizes, and needs, and the chairs needed to adapt to them not the other way around. Armrests needed better positioning for breastfeeding, and the chairs required the right ergonomics for prolonged kangaroo care sessions.

Infection Prevention & Durability: With high cleaning demands and heavy daily use, the Newborn Care Unit needed seating that could withstand wear, reduce risk of IPC non-compliance, and offer cost-effective replaceable components.

Lifetime Value: The charity wanted assurance that any investment would stand the test of time, offering genuine long-term value rather than a quick fix.

Although the Mauro chairs had been purchased periodically over the past few years, some initial concerns were raised around their “clinical look.” So, another evaluation was conducted this time with a focus on long-term durability and adjustability. The results spoke for themselves.

OUR APPROACH

Working closely with the Newborn Care Unit team and SSNAP, we designed a trial process that ensured every voice was heard and every need understood:

Multiple real-life trials: The chairs were tested in day-to-day use within the unit so parents and staff could experience the full benefits before committing.

Comprehensive feedback: Feedback forms were used throughout the evaluation, giving equal weight to staff, parents, and clinical requirements.

Hands-on support: Ocura’s dedicated account manager was present throughout the process, ensuring the Trust and Charity had all the information they needed to make a fully informed decision.

This collaborative approach helped the team feel confident in selecting the right products for their clinical, emotional, and operational needs.

THE OUTCOME

The transformation in the unit has been warmly received by both families and staff. Parents now have access to brightly coloured, fully adjustable, easy-to-clean recliners that make bonding with their newborn whether feeding, cuddling, or providing kangaroo care more comfortable and more accessible.

Staff benefit from easier manoeuvrability, increased responsiveness during emergencies, and reassurance that the seating matches the Newborn Care Unit’s stringent clinical needs.

Importantly, the addition of the bariatric Fero model means the department can now comfortably accommodate bariatric parents improving inclusivity and reducing strain on staff supporting postural or mobility needs.

Thanks to SSNAP’s funding and the Trust’s commitment to continuous improvement, the John Radcliffe Newborn Care Unit now has a seating solution that’s built not just for today but for many years to come.

Avento Reclining Relax Chair

Height-adjustable chair to effectively deliver treatment

With a multitude of features including height-adjustment arms, zero-gravity positioning, and ergonomic backrest, the Avento recliner is a great choice for many healthcare environments.

This chair has been found to be excellent in A&E and assessment areas, reducing the need for transferring patients from chair to trolley.

The Avento allows for effective, easy and efficient treatment to be administered to the patient whilst simultaneously caring for the clinicians back.

CREATING A SANCTUARY FOR STAFF WELLBEING

AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST

This training centre and library redesign project supports mental health and promotes staff retention through a thoughtfully designed environment for relaxation and learning.

THE APPROACH

With a charity funding boost during the project, FAP

Architects were asked to work with the end users to further develop the interior strategy, with new furniture throughout the facility.

Following research on how areas would be used, the scheme developed with an earthy colour palette which makes use of textured vinyl and wood finishes. The look and feel were essential to fostering a calm yet inspirational working environment for staff and students.

FAP led the project’s space utilisation and colour scheme, collaborating closely with key stakeholders from the Trust and experts at Ocura.

Longevity and durability were priorities, ensuring that the furniture selected would stand the test of time. The design also ensured uniformity across all three departments housed in the facility, providing a cohesive and connected training experience.

THE BRIEF

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust’s project was to refurbish their existing training centre and introduce a new library to replace a recently closed facility.

The project focused on redesigning the layout to optimise space for training sessions and providing dedicated breakout spaces in the form of staff and student lounges, with a key objective of supporting users’ mental health.

FAP Architects were lead consultant for the redevelopment, collaborating with trusted suppliers, including Ocura Healthcare Furniture, to successfully bring the vision to life.

ST BARTS CANCER ASSESSMENT UNIT (CAU)

THE BRIEF

Ocura Healthcare Furniture was part of a capital project to develop a new Cancer Acute Assessment Unit (CAU) on the 7th floor of the King George V Building at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (SBH).

This project has increased total capacity and flexibility of space across 5th and 7th floor cancer areas. To enable this, staff and services previously located in the administrative offices on the 5th floor have moved to the SMLG offices to create capacity for expanded clinical space.

THE APPROACH

Further to supplying the successful Verona Chairs to the Chemotherapy Day Unit, we were involved along with the Architect and the Projects Team in connection with space planning the new areas from the plans and proposing various priced options.

Various meetings were had on site to discuss specifications with management, clinical staff and visual arts to ensure a welldesigned and appealing healing environment. Information including light reflective values (LRV) was provided to ensure suitable colour differentiation of the furniture vs the flooring and wall finishes to ensure best user experience. Details were provided as to VAT exemption to ensure best possible value for the tight capital budget.

THE OUTCOME

Verona chairs were purchased for the 7th floor with emergency foot control pedals to ensure fast emergency recline. Boston Recliners were opted for in the 5th Floor area due to confined space and to maximise the number of patients that could be treated.

The Baltimore Seating was purchased to match in with the same seating that was purchased previously for the main reception area on Floor 7.

The whole team at the Trust were extremely happy with the end result.

THE OUTCOME

The results have been transformative. From 76,265 cases (Feb 2013–Jan 2023), open reduction and fixation surgery length of stay fell from 87 to 12 hours - an 86% reduction. Continuous IV antibiotics reduced stays from 60 to 47 hours (22% shorter). Only 7% now require overnight admission. TACU saved 2000 bed days (66 per month), equating to £1,000,000 in savings over 2.5 years, based on £500 per bed per day.

THE BRIEF

Before the Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU) was introduced, ambulatory trauma patients were treated through the busy Emergency Department. Care relied heavily on bed availability, but beds were often occupied by more unwell patients. Without proper access to beds, natural light or refreshments, the environment felt unsuitable and uncomfortable. Some patients even self-discharged against medical advice, directly citing poor facilities — ultimately affecting their outcomes.

THE APPROACH

Recognising the need for change, the health board established TACU to create a dedicated ambulatory pathway. Alongside a shift in clinical mindset - from “can this be day case?” to “why can’t this be day case?” - the unit streamlined care and reduced unnecessary admissions. Working together, the health board and Ocura selected 8 recliners, including the compact Mauro for consultation, treatment and recovery in one chair, and the Verona for minor surgery flexibility.

The results have been transformative. TACU saved 2000 bed days (66 per month), equating to £1,000,000 in savings.

THE APPROACH

The new chairs needed to be robust, reliable, and compact, but with a futuristic feel to fit the health centre’s design. We provided a Deneo for the staff to trial to ensure the chair met all their needs. Anita, BA Health Centre Practice Manager told us “everybody had a go [using the chairs] and we had good feedback”. THE OUTCOME

British Airways Health Services proceeded with a purchase order for the Deneo Chairs, as well as Orkney Operator Stools for the clinicians. They also purchased an Ocura Care service package as a way of protecting their investment. Our service contracts are a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of your product. They provide a basic Planned Preventative Maintenance strategy, essential for identifying any potential problems whilst helping to keep staff and patients safe when using the furniture.

Once the chairs were manufactured, we arranged delivery, and Robin, Ocura Account Manager provided a training session for staff. THE BRIEF

The British Airways Health Services (BAHS) Team provides an immunisation service along with specialist confidential support and advice for aircrew. Pilots and crew may seek advice about health issues, or they can arrange an appointment with an Occupational Health Physician and AME. The Team was looking to upgrade their current chairs for their health centre beside London Heathrow Airport. Kendall, the Occupational Health Practice Nurse, saw Ocura’s Deneo Chairs in action at the Phlebotomy Department at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and liked the compact, modern design.

COLLABORATIVE APPROACH WITH THEATRE STAFF AT THE HEART

The project was driven by close collaboration between the Decontamination/Sterile services team, Capital Projects team and theatre staff, who played a vital role in shaping the solution.

Initial discussions began at the IDSc Conference, where the Decontamination Leads initially explored innovative storage options and invited Capital Projects to undertake the venture and select the most suitable but competitive solution.

That is when Ocura was engaged.

THE CHALLENGE

ENHANCING PATIENT SAFETY THROUGH IMPROVED STORAGE

Queen’s Hospital Burton identified an opportunity to improve the integrity of sterile instrument wraps, which are critical to patient safety and theatre efficiency.

The existing storage systems, while functional, were increasingly contributing to wrap damage due to design limitations causing disruption to the Theatre’s and Sterile services operation by frequent sterilisation and re-wrapping.

Recognising the importance of maintaining sterility and supporting clinical workflows but struggling for years for the funding, the hospital’s Decontamination team has initiated a project to modernise its theatre storage infrastructure which has been approved.

OBJECTIVES

• Upgrade storage across five key theatre preparation rooms to reduce/eliminate wrap damage.

• Implement a flexible solution that could be relocated in future to more centralised storage space.

• Enhance daily workflow efficiency for theatre staff in a high-pressure environment.

RESULTS THAT MATTER

The installation covered all five theatre preparation rooms across the hospital.

And the impact?

• 600+ instrument packs stored individually – eliminating stacking and reducing tear risk.

• 31%^ increase in storage capacity compared to previous systems.

General Cleaning Instructions

Ocura proudly supplies high-quality products, designed to be used in demanding environments. With the correct care and attention, your furniture will provide many years of useful life.

The following information is issued as a guide to help maintain our furniture to high standards of cleanliness and thereby prevent the spread of infection. All surfaces should be diligently cleaned, disinfected regularly, and kept dry to minimise the risk of cross-contamination and damage.

Cleaning and subsequent disinfection must be carried out at regular intervals.

The following times are usually observed.

• If required.

• After each patient change.

• In accordance with the guidelines of the operator’s hygiene plan.

The product must always be disconnected from the mains supply by unplugging the mains plug before commencing cleaning work.

Electrical Components

• Electrical components must not be exposed to any form of liquid or humid conditions.

• Plastic casings containing actuators or handsets should be cleaned using a soft damp non-abrasive cloth and polished dry immediately.

• Do not use solvents, abrasives, synthetic detergents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any electrical components.

All General Surfaces

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry. Abrasive cloth must not be used.

• Any stains, spills or soiling should be cleaned up immediately to prevent the possibility of permanent staining.

• For disinfection, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Do not use concentrated bleach, synthetic detergents, solvents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any surface.

• Using cleaning products contrary to the recommended instructions may compromise the integrity of the furniture and invalidate your warranty.

Trolleys and Overbed Tables

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry.

• Under no circumstances should scouring sponges or cleaning agents containing abrasive particles, abrasives or other blunting substances be used.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Keep trolleys and tables away from direct sunlight.

• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.

Vinyl Upholstery

Our vinyl ranges offer excellent stain resistance and cleanability and have been tested for compatibility with the Department of Health and Social Care’s recommended cleaning regimes. Our vinyl is compatible with most NHS-approved cleaning solutions and wipes, including Chlor-Clean, Haz-tab, Actichlor-Plus, Milton, Clinell and Tristel.

Vinyl upholstery must be cleaned daily in order to maintain its appearance and to prevent any build-up of dirt and contaminants.

1. Wipe clean with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar), lightly dampened with a cleaning agent, if required, and cold water only. Do not use soap or cleaning solutions that contain alcohol, acetates, or solvents (mineral/white spirits).

2. Completely remove excess cleaner with a white, clean, damp cloth.

3. Completely dry the surface with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar). Ensure the vinyl is completely dry before putting the product back into use.

Remove bodily fluid, heavy stains and extreme soiling with cold water immediately.

Any stains, spills, or soiling should be cleaned up promptly to prevent the possibility of permanent staining. Lacquers, strong cleaners, detergents, xylene-based solutions, and acetone may cause immediate damage and contribute to the deterioration of the material. The use of such cleaners is at the end user’s risk.

• Do not use organic solvents (e.g. petrol, benzene, turpentine, toluene, xylene or acetone, chlorides, aerosol sprays, chemical cleaning agents, or wax polishes to clean the vinyl).

• Oil, sweat and blood must be removed immediately. If disinfection is required, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000 ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages. Do not use excessive amounts of water to clean the vinyl.

• Care should be taken to protect the vinyl from oil-based products (including body oils) as continued use will cause the vinyl to harden.

• Dyes and pigments from, iodine, ballpoint pen, lipstick, newsprint, food colourings and clothing, e.g. jeans may be absorbed by the vinyl and cause permanent staining.

• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.

Cleaning results may vary, depending on the size of the stain, the cleaning product used and the time the surface is exposed. The use of unsuitable cleaning agents, disinfectants, the incorrect mixing ratio, and insufficient care of the vinyl can cause damage to the surface coating for which Ocura Healthcare is not liable.

Why choose a maintenance contract?

Our service maintenance contracts are a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of your product. They provide a basic Planned Preventative Maintenance strategy, essential for identifying any potential problems whilst helping to keep staff and patients safe when using the furniture.

What is included?

During the service visit, our dedicated techinican will undertake preventative planned maintenance by completing a full product health check. Followed up by a detailed report of your furniture operation and overall condition.

Which level is right for my furniture?

We have a service maintenace contract that’s perfect for you, depending on your furniture. Select from our 2 levels to see which is best for you. Generally, manually operated furniture is included in Level 1, and for electrically operated furniture, select Level 2.

Manual or single motor medical chairs and couches

• One annual service visit in accordance with our standard maintenance procedure.

• Each contract taken out is fully inclusive of all travel fees - we pride ourselves on no hidden costs.

• 25% off replacement parts not covered under warranty.

Level 2

Multiple motor treatment chairs

• One annual service visit in accordance with our standard maintenance procedure.

• Each contract taken out is fully inclusive of all travel fees - we pride ourselves on no hidden costs.

We work with you to curate a space bespoke to you

Stage One - Consultation

Your dedicated Account Manager will take the time to understand your goals and work with you to make sure every need and goal is met. Whether this is in person or via a video call, they’re on hand to chat through everything in detail.

Simply reach out to arrange a time suitable for you.

Stage Two - Measurements

Our team will visit the space to make sure every millimetre is accounted for. We work with these measurements to bring your vision to life. From tiny store cupboards to huge open waiting atriums, we utilise the space effectively and efficiently.

Stage Three - Design

Our team of experts will then create your bespoke space plan. From planning out every drawer in your bespoke storage solution right through to planning a brand new staff wellbeing area, we’ve done it all before.

We’re experts in transforming healthcare environments so leave it to us. You’ve probably got enough on your plate!

Stage Four - Installation

Once the bespoke space plan has been agreed and signed off, it’s time to get it into action! Our fantastic team will deliver your products at a time and place to suit you. And that’s it! It’s time for you to enjoy your bespokely planned space.
