PBBM SIGNS 2025 BUDGET

The signing, supposedly scheduled before Christmas, was postponed to allow for an extensive review since, according to Marcos, certain provisions required “careful scrutiny” to guarantee that every centavo is spent on programs that truly benefit the Filipino citizens.

Moreover, he also sought conditional implementation on specific items to ensure that the funds are used efficiently, emphasizing that the government must also address long-term issues and not serve as a provisional solution only.

items which he deemed as

and thorough review, we have directly vetoed over Php194 billion worth of the line items that are not consistent with our programmed priorities,” President Marcos said.

From the Php194 billion, President Marcos vetoed Php168.240 billion under “Unprogrammed Appropriations” and Php26.065 billion worth of projects from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“We take our role as stewards of our taxpayers’ money seriously. And for this reason, after an exhaustive

“This way we ensure that its implementation will be strategic, leading to the long-term improvement of the lives of qualified beneficiaries, while guarding against misuse and duplication, and fragmented ben-

efits,” President Marcos said. “This approach is anchored on a simple yet profound truth: the appropriation of public funds must not break the public trust,” he added.

President Marcos reaffirmed the commitment of the government of prudent fiscal management, assuring new appropriations undergo cash programming, approval by concerned offices, and compliance with budget execution rules. He also emphasized in his speech that the General Appropriations Act (GAA) 2025 was developed to improve the lives of future generations and sustain economic growth.

Leyte execs against province split

Governor Petilla highlights that larger provinces manage resources more effectively due to economies of scale, making the division unnecessary and counterproductive to the developments under the current one provincial government.

Several municipalities—Isabel, Palompon, San Miguel, Burauen, and Matag-ob—have filed for resolutions opposing HB 11077, stating the inefficiencies in its enactment, including the financial strain from instilling a new province and splitting the Internal Revenue Allotment in Leyte, leading to the exacerbation of resource and representation disparities, as well as the isruption of Leyte’s historical, cultural, and geographical unity, which the Leyte Provincial Board has forwarded to the House of Representatives.

Remedios Petilla, Palo, Leyte Mayor and President of The League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Leyte Chapter, has also passed a manifesto strongly opposing the bill during their final quarterly meeting on December 14. Mayor Petilla says that mayors view the proposal as unnecessary, with attendants of the meeting signing the manifesto, and others who weren’t present have also expressed their intent to sign.

“This should not have been done hastily, filing the bill without consulting Eastern Visayas congressmen, the Speaker, or even our governor,” Tingog party-list Representative Jude Acidre said.

In a press conference, Acidre stated his support for the governor’s position against the proposal, criticizing the lack of consultation with key stakeholders, including

officials and legislators. Former Palompon Mayor Ramon Oñate echoed similar sentiments in a statement posted by Infinite Radio Villaba, stressing that the bill did not undergo proper public consultation.

House Bill No.11077, entitled “An Act Creating the Province of Western Leyte,” introduced by Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez aims to divide Leyte into two provinces—Eastern and Western Leyte—citing cultural and linguistic distinctions between Cebuano and Waray-speaking areas, as well as geographical challenges posed by the Leyte Central Highland Range, which affects accessibility to public services for the western populace.

The bill proposes Ormoc City to be the provincial seat of Western Leyte, which would comprise the current 3rd and 4th Districts of Leyte—Baybay, Calubian, San Isidro, Tabango, Villaba, Albuera, Isabel, Kananga, Matagob, Merida, Palompon, Bato, Hilongos, Hindang, Inopacan, and Matalom. Eastern Leyte or the Waray-speaking areas shall be the remaining parts of Leyte, mainly from the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts.

Gomez claims that creating a new province would result in faster economic development and better governance. However, critics say otherwise, they note the additional administrative costs the new province poses such as the duplication of government structures, and the bill’s lack of clear evidence for socioeconomic benefits. With a land area of 6, 313 sq km, comprised of 40 towns and three cities, and a population of 1.77 million, Leyte has already proven to be one of the most progressive provinces in the region.

80% of POGO hubs closed, authorities eye minor ops

The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission reported that 80% of the 400 Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hubs have closed down. Some groups still operate in secret, mainly in Northern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

PAOCC Executive Director Gilbert Cruz said small POGO groups, with 20 to 50 members, rent rooms in resorts, apartments, and gated areas to run scams. These groups are led by foreign nationals, while Filipinos work as keyboard operators.

The Bureau of Immigration had deported approximately 27,000 of 40,000 workers from the POGO operations. Operators from Porac, Pampanga managed to evade deportation; they packed their camps and transferred their operations to the Visayas.

Cruz noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. believes local leaders, especially barangay officials, are aware of these illegal operations. A rise in foreign guests in resorts and more food deliveries could hint at POGO activity.

Due to crimes like human trafficking and abduction linked to POGOs, Marcos announced a total ban on all POGOs in 2023, with a full phaseout by December 31, 2024. He also signed Executive Order 74 on November 4, 2023, to ban online gaming at once.

Feeling ImPEACHY, VP?

They say the New Year is a time for fresh starts and resolutions, but in the Philippines, 2025 began with political fireworks. Vice President Sara Duterte is at the center of a storm, facing three impeachment complaints that have the nation questioning whether this is democracy in action or just another political circus.

It all started with her not-so-confidential funds, a whopping 612.5 million pesos worth, reportedly used by Duterte’s offices from December 2022 until the third quarter of 2023. The complainants accuse Duterte of misappropriation of these funds by using fictitious individuals and presenting questionable receipts, including some with inconsistent dates. They claim her inability to account for the funds reflects a betrayal of public trust and inexcusable negligence in safeguarding public resources. This abuse of discretionary powers had become one of the impeachable offenses cited in the complaints against her.

The initial impeachment complaints, endorsed by Akbayan Representative Percival Cendaña and the Makabayan bloc, have been formally transmitted to the House Speaker. The third complaint, filed by numerous Catholic priests last December 19, 2024, adds even more fuel to the fire. Moreover, a fourth impeachment complaint is reportedly in the works, with discussions among lawmakers about endorsing it. House Secretary-General Chedrick Gatchalian has indicated that there is currently insufficient support to move the complaints forward. However, reports suggest that 10 to 12 representatives are willing to endorse this fourth complaint, indicating a possible shift in the House leadership’s stance.

Adding drama to the situation, Duterte was removed from the National Security Council on December 30, 2024, by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in what some see as a move to distance himself from the controversies surrounding her. Despite the gravity of the allegations, President Marcos has publicly dismissed the impeachment proceedings as inconsequential, referring to them as a “storm in a teacup” and a waste of time. He has urged lawmakers to refrain from pursuing the impeachment, emphasizing that it does not contribute to the betterment of Filipino lives.

On the other side of the coin, VP Sara Duterte appears unbothered. She’s publicly stated that she “welcomes” the impeachment complaints, as if daring her critics to bring it on. Her supporters, including over 1.5 million participants in a “National Rally for Peace” organized by Iglesia ni Cristo on January 13, 2025, demonstrate significant public backing.

However, Gatchalian has pointed out a lack of sufficient support in Congress to advance the complaints. With only a few session days remaining before the February adjournment and the 2025 elections on the horizon, many lawmakers are shifting their focus to campaign preparations instead of engaging in a protracted and uncertain impeachment process. History suggests that impeachment in the Philippines often

devolves into a spectacle. From Joseph Estrada’s trial, marred by political maneuvering and public protests, to former Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment, where personal vendettas and political alliances overshadowed substantive legal discourse, the pattern of grandstanding over genuine reform is clear.

The current proceedings against Duterte are already showing signs of following this trajectory. The lack of cohesion among the complainants, the timing of the complaints, and the evident political maneuvering suggest that this is less about strengthening democratic institutions and more about playing to the galleries. While impeachment is a legitimate constitutional process, its misuse as a political weapon diminishes its value and undermines public confidence in the system.

As the nation moves into 2025, the stakes remain high. While many Filipinos hope for accountability, the signs point to yet another circus that will ultimately leave the public disillusioned. Whether the complaints against Duterte will bring meaningful change or simply become another chapter in the country’s history of political theatrics depends on the integrity of Congress and the will of the people. But as it stands, all eyes are on the House—not for justice, but for the latest act in a wellworn political play.

The Right Size or a Tall Order?

he Senate’s push to legislate Senate Bill 890 or the Rightsizing the National Government Act is a move worth watching, but not without a raised eyebrow. The measure, championed by Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, seeks to streamline the government bureaucracy, improve efficiency, and eliminate redundancies. At face value, it is a noble pursuit. After all, who would not want a government that delivers effectively without an unnecessary dent in the budget? But, as most with sweeping reforms, the devil lies not just in the details but in the lack thereof.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has already called out what many are quietly thinking: where is the homework? The bill promises an optimal government structure, yet there is no cost-benefit analysis or impact study on it; this promise is vague as it is ambitious. Are we to believe that such a major overhaul will just figure itself out as we go along? Gatchalian’s skepticism is more than valid, it is necessary.

Beyond the numbers, there is a deeper concern: the sheer power this bill grants to the executive. Rightsizing is not just about streamlining workflows; it hands the President the authority to establish, merge, or create government offices at will. This is not just a matter of efficiency; it is a concentration of power that could easily be abused. A measure of this magnitude requires robust safeguards, and yet those safeguards remain conspicuously absent. Escudero insists that the objective of rightsizing is not to save money but to deliver services more efficiently. A fine sentiment, but one that thatseems hollow without clear mechanisms to ensure accountability and transparency.

With the Senate rushing to pass the bill before the 19th Congress adjourns, there is a real danger that this measure could be railroaded into law without the rigorous scrutiny it demands. This timing is something to question too. With the midterm election campaign period just around the corner, the Senate seems to be in a frantic sprint to pass priority measures. But haste makes waste. This measure needs thorough deliberation, not a mad dash to meet arbitrary deadlines. Legislating in a rush has seldom served the Filipino people well.

However, rightsizing is not inherently bad. The government does need to modernize, optimize, and ensure that every peso spent benefits the people. But good intentions are not enough. Without clear data, well-defined outcomes, and safeguards against abusee, this measure risks a Pandora’s box—unleashing unintended consequences on a system already fraught with inefficiency and distrust.

So, Senators, take your time. Rightsizing may be a step forward, but only if it is done with caution, precision, and the people’s interest at heart. Otherwise, this “streamlining” may end up causing more chaos than it resolves. The Senate owes it to the people to do better. To do anything less would be to gamble with the nation’s future.

“Just give me the money” with the Senate

Senators did not miss the “Just give me my money” trend where the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) was ignored and the Ayuda para sa mga Kapos ang Kita Program

was given the “money.”

Recently, the senators and other house representatives cut off the budget of PhilHealth. Instead of the proposed budget of Php 74.431 billion, they will get zero subsidy due to its lapses, such as failures to cover up health benefits to Filipinos, inequality in accessing healthcare, and corruption. The supposed budget of PhilHealth will be given to other sectors that need it the most, including the AKAP with a budget of Php 26 billion. The Senate saw the AKAP as more of a priority rather than the healthcare program. The decision was unfair because they were depriving the healthcare rights of the people.

PhilHealth has been providing accessible and affordable health care services to Filipinos. However, even with

PhilHealth insurance, the bill is still too much. Additionally, PhilHealth also abused funds by allegedly utilizing Php 138 million for their Christmas party, which they disputed and maintained was for their anniversary next year. Although they have 600 billion pesos of reserve funds, these were allocated for emergencies and debts. Meanwhile, the AKAP, which gave qualified people Php 3,000 to Php 5,000, was a priority. Although the AKAP budget is essential, providing a PhilHealth budget is also crucial because the Philippines lack accessible and affordable healthcare facilities. Considering that the AKAP has a 26 billion budget but only gives 3-5k, it is not enough to alleviate their suffering and cannot even cover hospital expenses. Senator Bato Dela Rosa even believes that the AKAP budget will be beneficial for the upcoming 2025 senate election.

The government must oversee the importance of healthcare rights, especially because poverty is rampant with a 15.5% incident rate in 2023. The decision to cut PhilHealth’s budget is not addressing the root of the problem—corruption. The Senate should decide to cut corrupt systems within PhilHealth. As the country has a budget of 6.352 trillion, the senate should consider funding PhilHealth. This decision is potentially harmful as most Filipinos can’t afford to cover health care expenses. Everyone has the right to access affordable healthcare. Cutting off the budget will not make PhilHealth reflect on its failures but will only just harm Filipinos.

Turn Up the Heat

Personal conflicts and unprofessional behavior among political leaders undermine public trust and stall progress. The current altercation between Senators Nancy Binay and Alan Peter Cayetano has never made this fact more evident.

During a Senate session on July 8, 2024, Binay filed an ethics complaint, alleging that Cayetano had used “unparliamentary conduct and language.” Her action is audacious, but it highlights a bigger problem: our politicians’ increasing propensity to put their own interests ahead of the good of the public.

Cayetano responded to the accusation in a noncommittal, even contemptuous manner. He dismissed it, implying that he could easily bring a case of such kind against Binay. One wonders if the Senate is turning into a playground for trivial arguments because of this tit-for-tat conduct. Leaders like them ought to concentrate on resolving actual problems rather than escalating personal grievances. Their actions not only impede advancement but also erode public trust in their leadership skills.

Politics is depicted in a negative light by the spectacle of lawmakers arguing about personal issues rather than urgent national issues. It conveys to the populace that the demands of the many are subordinated to the interests of a select few.Fundamentally, being a leader requires professionalism, humility, and the ability to put aside differences.

The people suffer when lead ers don’t live up to these ideals. Governance breaks down, and trust is lost. Our nation cannot afford leaders who prioritize their own egos over their responsibil ities. Public employees are unfit to lead if they are unable to keep their personal problems apart from their official duties.

Ultimately, service, not self-in terest, is what leadership is all about.Hopefully, our senators will keep that in mind.

Letters to the Editor

What is your stand on the No Collection Policy issued by the Department of Education?

The No Collection Policy is a great idea. It helps students who don’t really have the means to contribute as much to the school budget. While some people think that it can deter the school’s development, as they think no money is coming in, there’s a clause in there that states that it is voluntary, meaning that those who can give can still give.

What are your thoughts on having relationships as teenagers?

As someone who’s never been in a relationship before, I could not really give a more in depth advice. However, all I can say is this: you can turn to them for inspiration, not use them as a distraction. I know people who are in relationships but still managed to succeed and reach their dreams. If that’s what you want to do (assuming that both of you like each other and want to reach that phase), go for it, but since you’re young, please know your limits, as teenage relationships can be pretty volatile.

Et tu, Sara?

Betrayal. Chaos. Crisis. Another political drama is spewing in the Philippines, unprecedented even in a country accustomed to political turbulence.

Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent remarks, where she openly admitted to orchestrating a potential assassination of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and key allies if she were killed, reveals the extent of the fracture of what was once the nation’s favorite duo.

The escalation of hostility signals the final collapse of what was once a powerful political alliance between two dynasties. The UniTeam of Marcos and Duterte shared a wave of populism, riding the wave of victory in the 2022 Elections. Yet, as their ongoing feud has grown insurmountable, it now threatens not only political stability but also public trust in governance. This big “friendship over” of the two is causing another fallout for the nation.

The implication of this crisis is dire. With the 2024 midterm elections upcoming, the country faces the possibility of heightened political violence and further division. Historical parallels, such as the assassination of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., shows how these threats of violence must be taken seriously. Aquino’s death not only intensified existing

tensions between powerful po litical factions but also became a turning point in Philippine history, galvanizing public dissent and reshaping the country’s politics. Today, the feud between two political families in the Philippines is no longer a matter of internal disputes; it is now a matter of national security, as officials scramble to tighten security measures for the president.

“Et tu, Brutus?” is a famous line from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, where Caesar is betrayed by his close ally, Brutus. Quite a familiar scenario that we are witnessing in real time. Once united, but now divided, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte’s relationship is now utterly in shambles. How the Philippines navigates this moment will define not only the legacy of its leaders but also the stability of its current governance. Hence, the Filipino people will now face the harsh truth: political alliances built on convenience, rather than shared vision, are doomed to unravel. In the end, a fractured foundation

the system

Imagine a world where values lead us to consistently choose the right path, and justice is administered fairly for everyone. However, in reality, the line between morals and justice is often blurred, particularly in a society where inequality, corruption, and poverty are normalized.

An incident recently happened in Lanang, Davao City, involving a man who attempted to shoplift groceries worth ₱1,667.35. While many sympathize with the man’s circumstance, the question remains: Should we prioritize morals over justice, or is it the other way around? where the system is heavily skewed in favor of the wealthy and powerful, is it fair to hold individuals accountable for actions done out of survival, even if they break the law?

Babies, Burdens, and Bad Decisions

Our country’s lack of comprehensive sexuality education has resulted in children being born in ditches, abandoned, disowned, and even forced into child labor. The lack of comprehensive sexuality education may be the downfall of the youth—the so-called “mga pag-asa ng bayan.”

Complaining about our country’s rising birth rate, and still we are blinded by the fact that teenage pregnancy accounts for the majority of pregnancies. Not to add the burden of raising the child, we continue to overlook the importance of providing comprehensive sexuality education.

Teenage pregnancy not only happens in our country but all around the world; still, the Philippines remains one of the highest countries in Asia in terms of teenage pregnancies. And according to Save the Children our country had a 35% hike in pregnancies of girls aged 15 and under between 2021 and 2022. Why are we taking such a slow approach to addressing an issue that could significantly impact our future? In comparison, the United Kingdom implemented their 10-year teenage pregnancy strategy for England which is one of the few examples of an intervention which has successfully reduced

teenage pregnancy rates. When will our country progress to have the same results?

Focusing on the lack of sex education, we delve deeper into teenagers leaving the burden to their parents; lacking financial support for their own child leads to them relying on their parents. Their parents, who they were supposed to support by finishing school, turned to their parents for support because of the unforeseen consequences of teenage pregnancy. Lacking proper education can and will lead to this route in life. Not knowing about sexual and reproductive health can lead to unintended pregnancies.

In the end, the lack of comprehensive sexuality education isn’t just a statistic or a policy issue—it’s a real, human problem that impacts lives, dreams, and futures. It’s about young boys and girls dropping out of school to care for children they weren’t ready

for. It’s about parents struggling to shoulder the burden of mistakes that could’ve been avoided with the right guidance. It’s about young people, like you and me, who deserve to have the knowledge to make informed decisions about our bodies and our lives.

We owe it to ourselves and to the generations after us to push for change. Comprehensive sexuality education isn’t just about preventing teenage pregnancies; it’s about creating a future where every young person can focus on their dreams, live without fear or shame, and contribute to a better, stronger nation. Let’s stop tiptoeing around this issue and start talking openly about what matters. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just about education—it’s about respect, empowerment, and giving every young Filipino the chance to succeed.

The man who stole groceries may have done so out of sheer desperation, but stealing remains incorrect, regardless of the circumstance. The concept of personal responsibility demands that we acknowledge the consequences of our actions, even when they are driven by necessity. While it is easy to feel empathy for those who are struggling, especially in a country where basic necessities often seem out of reach to most, justice must be upheld. This is where I think the tension between morals and justice arises—because in the lack of fairness in the system, morals become subjective.

However, the deeper issue lies not in the actions of individuals, but in the system of our country that fuels such desperation. The rich and powerful go hand in hand for their crimes, while the poor continue to suffer. Corruption within the justice system is widespread, so how can we call the world fair when those in positions of power consistently do everything in their power, leaving the poor to fend for themselves? The theft is a symptom of a much larger problem—a problem that no amount of punishment for individual actions will solve.

To sum it all up, the theft may have been wrong, but it is not the act itself that should be the sole focus—it is the system that drives people to such extremes. True justice can only be achieved when the playing field is level, when those in power are held accountable for their actions, and when the powerless are given the opportunities they need to live with stability. Until then, the struggle for equality and fairness will remain an ongoing battle, where the balance between morals and justice continues to be challenged by an unjust reality.

The Alice Guo we don’t Noelle

In the heart of Eastern Visayas, where the streets of Ormoc City pulsate with the everyday rhythm of provincial life, an extraordinary story has unfolded. Noelle Angela Tan, a 17-year-old student living in the modest neighborhood of Purok 7, Barangay Bagong Buhay, has become the subject of national fascination. Her claim to fame? An uncanny resemblance to former Philippine politician Alice Guo that has captured the imagination of millions across the archipelago.

Born on a warm summer day of May 27, 2007, Tan’s journey from an ordinary high school student to a social media phenomenon began with a single viral photo. The image, which showcased her remarkably similar features to the well-known politician, spread like wildfire across various social media platforms. The resemblance is nothing short of extraordinary-from the distinct arch of their eyebrows to the gentle curve of their smile, the similarities have left even the most seasoned observers doing double-takes.

and they all can’t help but point out that fame hasn’t changed the polite, hardworking girl they have known for years. Her family, while proud of her new-found recognition, remains a steady anchor, helping her navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of public attention.

The turn of events that she shares the same features as Guo opens doors that were not there to begin with, turning what may have been a more or less straight shot through high school into something much messier and full of opportunity. Still, Tan takes all of this maturity personified. She’s just wise beyond her years about fame, speaking of gratitude toward the platforms she has been afforded, yet keeping her wits soundly focused on her own development.

The atmosphere within the halls of Ormoc City Senior High School, where Tan continues her Grade 12 studies, has subtly changed since her rise to fame. Fellow students now share their campus with someone whose face has graced numerous television screens across the nation. Yet, Tan’s presence in the classroom remains characterized by the same dedication and intellectual curiosity that marked her academic career before fame came calling.

Her academic excellence speaks volumes about her character. There may be whirlwind media attention, but Tan remains one of the school’s top performers. Teachers note with approval how she balances the demands of sudden celebrity with the rigorous requirements of senior year coursework. In between shooting for the tube and having photos taken for calendars, she often sits in school library pouring through her textbooks much like when it was strictly academicians of distinction with this face was no exception.

So much that’s changed from fame gone viral all around: From television producers enamored of a striking similarity to Guo mingling natural charms, she gets invited onto people’s favorite television shows, including her’s. With each appearance, she has unveiled a different aspect of her personality: articulate, poised, and refreshingly genuine. And so has the modeling industry: it’s taken note that, instead of a politician’s echo, it found a beauty all her own in her.

The Tan family lives in the Bagong Buhay neighborhood, which has taken to the newfound celebrity in its midst. The neighbors all talk about her in a mixture of pride and protective affection,

The vision for the future is far more than what has been highlighted. Her plans, as it is seen, indicate a thoughtful approach to life after high school, which not only deals with academic excellence but also involves the development of crucial life skills. She talks about enhancing her communication skills and writing abilities with the same passion that characterizes her current academic endeavors, a young woman who views her current fame not as an end but as a stepping stone to broader horizons.

While her story continues, Tan is progressing through her last year at Ormoc City Senior High School. In a world of instant viral sensations and fleeting internet celebrity, she embodies the rare gift of turning this kind of serendipitous attention into opportunities for growth and development. What she has endured is a textbook lesson in preserving authenticity while succumbing to interest from the public, demonstrating the possibility of how unplanned publicity can be funneled towards personal growth.

The corridors of Ormoc City Senior High School still echo with the regular sounds of student life, but they now also hold the story of a young woman who proves that extraordinary circumstances don’t have to derail ordinary dreams. As Noelle Angela Tan balances textbooks with television appearances, she demonstrates that perhaps the most remarkable thing about looking like someone famous is choosing to remain steadfastly yourself.

In the end, her story transcends a simple narrative of physical resemblance. It becomes testimony to how young people in this digital age can handle unexpected publicity graciously, pursue educational aspirations, and turn viral moments into chances for real growth. As she goes through the rest of her senior year, Tan’s experience stands as an excellent example of keeping perspective and personal goals despite the dazzling yet unpredictable spotlight of public attention.

STAND UP TWO TIMES, WIN FOR THE THIRD!

Manypeople live their whole lives never having an ounce of care in their names, but for Ma’am Rizza Lynne Lopez it was different. Her name never felt complete—something was missing: a title. She recently acquired it by passing the bar exam after failing it twice—embodying the words perseverance and resilience as she relentlessly overcomes every adversities that obstruct her path from reaching her goal. She fell down two times, but she stood up three… and now bask in honor on the sky that she always longed to reach. She never gave up—enabling her to not only have the “LPT” title in her name but also “Atty.”

“There were times that I was discouraged, confused and struggling but God was there and is always there.” Ma’am Rizza Lynne C. Lopez, who recently passed the Bar Exam, wrote in her facebook post. Despite all kinds of factors that fuel internal conflict creeping into her mind and heart, she never succumbed to any of them. Instead, the presence of God became a dawn light that illuminated the darkness that loomed over her path—challenges she had encountered towards having the title “Atty.” before her name.

The journey she embarked towards becoming an attorney was not a smooth one; she struggled… sometimes to the point of causing her to give up. However, with God constantly being by her side, guiding and assuaging her doubtful heart, the rough road became bearable. Just like in her first attempt where she did not see her name on the list of passers; she felt as if a bullet had strike her hopeful heart. But, that did not break her spirit. She decided to try again for the second time… thinking that the result will change for the better.”

The seed of doubt sprouted within her more so than ever, but with her spirit that never conceding defeat, the seedlings wilted before they could grow their poisonous petals and thorns.

Despite all the series of doubts and setbacks, she resolved to retake the exam for the third… and last time. “I prayed to God that if I don’t pass this Bar, that means I am not meant to be a lawyer.” This was her moment of reckoning.

When the results were finally released, Rizza found her name on the list of successful examinees. Finally, she was rewarded. It was the culmination of years of hard work, faith, and perseverance. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she declared, “To God be the glory because God was the reason I passed.” Now, she could claim the title “Atty.” before her name. She is now Atty. Rizza Lynne Lopez, LPT — a name she always longed to have.

Her success was not hers alone. It was a shared victory with the people who stood by her through every trial. She thanked and acknowledged her family, friends, mentors, colleagues, and each and every one who played a role in her journey. She cherished each person who contributed to her success. Of course, she also addressed her gratitude to God, who guided her every step of the way.

“ ”
I often thought of why God allowed me to fail the Bar Exams, but God never failed to remind me that there is always hope for tomorrow.

May this be a reminder that even with the harsh waves we encounter in life, the calm and soothing horizon can be seen beyond them, and that perseverance and resilience will not fail you from reaching the skies you want to bask in honor and pride on— may her story be a reminder that our struggles are only a prelude of the blessings that He will bestow upon us, blessings we earnestly prayed for. The journey to becoming a lawyer was more than an academic or professional achievement—it was a spiritual awakening. Through her trials, she learned to trust God’s timing and to remain steadfast in her faith, even when the path seemed unclear.

That is why she then decided to take the exam again with unwavering determination, but with fate seemingly against her, she failed again—reliving the frustration and despondency she experienced after the first try. But this one was different. Frustration creeped the very core of her existence as she almost reached her dream; she only needed 1% to finally pass the exam. That 1% became her greatest bane—one that caused the rope she used to reach the sky to be cut off despite almost reaching it.

This step forward was one where she would deliberately stop at the end of the road if she failed again. This didn’t mean that she was giving up, though; it just meant that the path she was currently treading on was not for her. She would stop not out of defeat, but of acceptance.

As the exam week approached, anxiety crept in, but Rizza turned to prayer. She thanked God not only for the opportunity to take the Bar again but also for the gift of family. They were her constant source of strength, reminding her of God’s grace during her most trying moments.

Her name finally felt complete with the addition of the “Atty.”But it is more than a title—it contains within the essence of her 3 long years of diligence. The unwavering support that her family and friends gave her, the guidance she had received from God, and the perseverance she had shown—all of these are compiled within that title. It is a testament of her resilient spirit that never yields itself to the gruelling and arduous adversities that one encounters in life. For her, it is a badge of honor symbolizing the sacrifices that she had given to achieving her goal.

Truly, her story encapsulates the Japanese proverb: “Fall down seven times, get up eight,” which in her case, there’s a subtle and apparent difference. Nonetheless, her story sparks inspiration for everyone to strive for greater heights, and to achieve that?

Persevere and be resilient. That is what the saying is all about: to always get up—no matter how many times life knocks you down, giving up will be the greatest failure one can ever do in their lifetime—for when you rise again, you’re one step closer to touching the sky.

HOLLOW WEEPS

When urgency speaks and relief must be done, you tread the school’s corridor towards your destination. However, a creepy feeling looms on your path… underneath the dreary night when the sun just bid its farewell, your heart and mind can hear and feel a sensational frequency that eerily echoes throughout the hallways that were once filled with ebullience.

The uncanny rhythm of weeping sounds from an unknown entity course throughout. You follow the sound at its core, and there, you see the comfort room doused by tears. While an insinuated cadence of melancholy envelopes the cold room, the forlorn being slowly becomes ostensible as its cries reverberate ghastly.

An impending fright starts to become apparent as an evanescent silhouette of an obscure wailing lady appears in the eerie ambiance of a translucent veiled dimension—a forgotten existence who has risen from her slumber. The lady is curled up with tears trickling relentlessly in the hollow as if she whines clandestinely for reasons one cannot surmise. Woe fills the room while fear strikes your eyes.

silently, still unbeknownst of your presence, your feet simply start to move stealthily accompanied by a heart beating faster than ever. Whoever sees and hears her, fear is ignited within them. The tune in which she cries radiates a feeling that causes your heart to tremble. With every daunting melody, goosebumps can be felt causing your soul to inadvertently want to run away, and disheveled emotions run amok with every dreadful teardrop.

In a place of who-knows-where, either her body lays there pale, already become what it once was… or in a grim state. No one knows who she is nor her past, her story has long ended and has been lost in the void of time—gone forever. However, her woeful heart lingers

ence begets fear no matter the time or place. In the form of humanity’s most common response towards sadness: crying, the lady still evokes humanity’s enemy: fear—fear towards what cannot be understood.

Nonetheless, despite the dreaded continuous sounds of sniffling, she is but a mere lost soul ensconced above the incandescent perpetual flames of punishment and below the place where beatitudes spread, a being that should belong to either of the two realms, but instead is trapped where both collide. Her canvas whose colors have faded eons ago has lost its way to a school where other canvases are still vibrant with distinct flamboyant hues — a solitary and different existence, indeed.

students’ minds as someone who induces fear, an indelible lady etched in their fearful hearts… or maybe, her everlasting weeping is her way of fervently praying to the skies to accept her, begging for forgiveness. Whatever the reason may be, her sadness will eternally echo from the desolate place where she cries as both realms have closed off their gates for her—forever trapped in our realm, forever hallowing her weeping.

B EYOND THE RED RIBBON

As if to engender a symbol of hope, a red ribbon was intertwined into existence — becoming a beacon of light that sheds the obscurity that veils the suffering and despair experienced by people “tainted” by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and its next stage: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)... a virus that arises when temptation and desire envelopes people’s souls. The red ribbon has become a weapon occasionally worn by advocates to combat the stigma and discrimination faced by the victims.

The red ribbon has become an item that signifies awareness and support for people living with HIV/ AIDS, continuing to represent compassion, care, and the fight against the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease. It also serves as a reminder of the global commitment to preventing HIV/AIDS and finding a cure.

Students from varying clubs and organizations of Ormoc City Senior High School wore these ribbons with compassion as they attended a symposium to commemorate World Aids Day at the City Youth Development Office on December 16, 2024. With the theme “Ending AIDS: A Shared Responsibility”, the

symposium’s main purpose is to educate the young minds of OCSHS, as it isn’t only a problem that those affected by the virus must fight against, but all of us as a whole—to form solidarity to oust this parasite that has affected many people all over the world.

“Protect, Include, Empower, and Educate” them for they too are humans whom we must respect and help, for we too must advocate about the topic so that no more people will fall to the impermanent pleasure that can cause permanent damage in our lives.

HIV/AIDS is mainly caused by two enemies that humanity has been fighting against since days of yore, that continue to remain at large. These are: Temptation and Desire. The resource speaker, Nurse Ashdel De Loyola Artes, emphasized her firm stand towards one of the ways to protect one’s self from HIV, which is “Abstaining from having sex.” as it is a virus whose one of the primary causes is by having sexual intercourse, especially with multiple people. However, as people easily succumb to Temptation and Desire, this problem has become quite prevalent… and they, hand in hand, cause many problems, in which Agony and Despondency follow behind. Some even have their dignity affected and ruined as they experience discrimination if the fact that they acquired the virus comes to light or even worse: death.

Nurse Artes tackled breaking the stigma that encompasses the victims as it is one of the primary reasons that causes the affected to be afraid of consulting help, and that we must instead

Nonetheless, there’s more to the red ribbon than being a symbol of hope for those with HIV/AIDS, it also serves as a comforting cradle that can assuage the victims’ hearts that have suffered from the prejudices and unfair treatments they have experienced thus far… for every people that have wore it, they have become allies that achieved changing other people’s negative perceptions, albeit slowly but surely… and a testament of the advocacies and campaigns that became driving forces that pushes people to do actions of change.

The red ribbon may be an accessory or a home of delicacies to some but for others? It is a catalyst of change, whose indelible red hue will forever be instilled in many people’s minds… a reminder of an exigent problem that has since been creeping into our society—a memento of those whose worth is far more than what society deemed them to be.

Kuya Guard’s Ghostly Chronicles

In the quiet corridors of Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS), where the echoes of students' laughter fade into the night, one man stands vigilant.

Kuya Guard, as he's affectionately known, has seen more than just the usual hustle and bustle of school life. His 24-hour shifts have been marked by eerie encounters that defy explanation, leaving him and others to wonder if the school is truly haunted.

The Doppelganger Incident

It was a typical night shift for Kuya Guard, patrolling the grounds and ensuring everything was in order. At around 8:00 PM, a call came in from a teacher who was the last person left in Building B. The teacher, stationed on the 4th floor, asked Kuya Guard what he was doing roaming the halls. Stunned, Kuya Guard replied that he was on the ground floor. The teacher insisted he had seen someone who looked exactly like Kuya Guard. Was it a doppelganger? The chilling thought lingered as Kuya Guard continued his

As he approached, the door suddenly slammed shut in front of him. There was no wind, no one else around. Did a spirit shut the door on him? The incident left him shaken, but he continued his duty, albeit with a heightened sense of unease.

The Crying Girl

One of the most haunting experiences Kuya Guard recalls is seeing an image of a girl with long hair in the 4th floor of Building A, specifically in the 3rd room from the left, known to be the classroom of 12 - STEM Fleming. The girl appeared to be crying, her sobs echoing through the empty halls. When Kuya Guard approached, she vanished. Was it a hallucination, or was he witnessing the sorrow of a restless spirit

The Mysterious Fan

as he continued his patrol, the hum of the fan a constant reminder of the unexplained.

The Watchful Presence

During his long shifts, Kuya Guard often feels a presence watching him. As he lays down to rest, the sensation of being observed creeps over him, making it difficult to sleep. He has heard stories of a former student’s soul haunting the 4th floor of Building A, and sometimes, he believes he catches glimpses of this restless spirit.

Kuya Guard’s ghostly chronicles have become a part of the school's lore, shared in hushed tones among students and staff. Whether these experiences are the result of overactive imaginations or genuine paranormal activity, one thing is certain: the halls of OCSHS hold secrets that only reveal themselves in the dead of night.

Through my portrayal, I hope to convey that strength and compassion are not mutually exclusive

L ibing the A fterlife

It’s not every day that a symbol of mortality walks among us, cloaked in elegance, crowned with roses, and carrying the weight of centuries of storytelling.

Yet on December 6, 2024, at Ormoc City Senior High School’s English Month Culmination, La Muerte, the Goddess of Life and Death, came back to life. The embodiment of this literary figure? None other than Anika Dequinco, who not only championed the Literary Character Competition but also earned the Exceptional Character Award for her portrayal. But what made this performance unforgettable was its unexpected origin and the raw determination behind the mask.

When asked what inspired her portrayal, Anika candidly admitted, “Actually, wala koy inspiration jd.” She hadn’t even been the first choice for the role. A twist of fate placed her as La Muerte after the original performer withdrew due to scheduling conflicts. Despite having zero background in cosplay, Anika seized the opportunity with an attitude that screamed resilience.

"Gi ask nko ako teacher for confirmation if madayun ba ang role, and when I learned the main character backed out, ni ana ko nga pwede rko mo puli. Ganahan pud ko mo try ug unsay feeling sa mo apil ug cosplay," she shared. That decision led to two intense days of clutched preparation.

Challenges loomed large, from crafting her intricate costume on a tight budget to fighting against the ticking clock. The night before the event, tears flowed as the pressure mounted. “Naghilak ko kay mahadlok ko basin dili mahuman ang tanan,” Anika revealed. On the day itself, panic struck again when they realized they lacked the brush needed for her face paint. Ready to give up, she reached out to friends in desperation. “Abi nko wala najuy pagasa,” she confessed, her voice tinged with emotion. But as if the universe conspired to keep her on stage, a friend miraculously came through. With her face painted and confidence restored, Anika stepped onto the stage, embodying La Muerte with poise and power.

be feared but as an inevitable part of life, an equalizer that transcends social and cultural boundaries. Dressed as the elegant La Catrina, Anika captured this duality: the beauty and solemnity of death, and its reminder of life’s fleeting nature. Her performance didn’t just win awards; it sparked reactions. The audience were torn between awe and fear, with some running toward her for photos while others kept their distance.

But beyond the visual impact, Anika’s portrayal carried a deeper message. “Through my portrayal, I hope to convey that strength and compassion are not mutually exclusive,” she explained. La Muerte, as a literary figure, teaches that true power lies in balancing firmness with empathy, protecting and guiding with love and wisdom. Anika emphasized the importance of honoring the past while embracing the future, a lesson she hopes resonated with her audience.

For those unfamiliar, La Muerte—also known as Santa Muerte—is a figure deeply rooted in Mexican folklore and spirituality. She personifies death not as something to

As Anika’s performance proved, La Muerte is not just about death—it’s about what comes after, about remembering to live fully while we can. So, what does La Muerte mean to you? Is she a reminder of life’s impermanence, or a call to cherish every fleeting moment?

Generation Alpha, Generation Now

Their childhood is spent with a screen they can hold near them. They go outside far less than their older peers or so that’s what they thought, because while the things we never thought of having while we were in their shoes, for them, not only is it a way of life, but something in which they are born.

Born between 2010 and 2025, a new generation succeeding Gen Z, Generation Alpha, has been making waves recently. Their childhood. Most of them are children of Millennials, two generations behind them, with the outlier Gen X and Gen Z being thrown in. Their childhood is marred with the demands and struggles of the fast-paced world we live in right now, with the most notable ones being the ticking clock of climate change, the halts brought to everyday life thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, increased technology use, and falling birth rates.

The term for this new generation, utilizing the letters of the Greek alphabet, came from Mark McCrindle in 2008 after a survey he and his team conducted, stating that it would not make sense to go back to the Latin alphabet nomenclature after Generation Z, instead opting for a new one because as the first generation to be

born solely in the 21st century, the generation is meant to be a buffer zone between the old and the new, a signal of more modern times ahead.

If you look into the typical life of a Gen Alpha, with whom the oldest members are still in high school, you can see that they go on with life just like anyone else would do, but with more technology. Gone are the days when one has access to cable TV favorites like Cartoon

Network, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon at their disposal, as their faces are now rummaged with various streaming services with Netflix, Disney+, and many more. If you have ever lived in the same space with them, you may hear the famous “glued to the phones” criticisms flying around, as if to suggest that the phones are one step closer from being held by their hands to being a part of it.

For all the negative criticisms they have endured and, trust me, there are a lot of them much like other generations behind them, Generation Alpha has made it clear to their elders that they will not let themselves be defined solely by it. Young talents have made strides in various fields they have been inventors, actors, sportsmen, among many others ready to rule the world where many people have doubted them.

With the right guidance and support, despite being in the front seat to a fast-paced, confusing movie, Generation Alpha can take the wheels from their elders and drive it through a maze of uncertainty, driving the change that will be enjoyed by them and for many generations after.

A new beginning after the end

There are walls that each student is climbing… and these old walls, that are always carved with varying intricate numbers and certificates after every accolade, have been newly engraved with new ones—testaments of a new ending envelopes the lives of the students of Ormoc City Senior High School.

Within these walls are the seedlings that the students of OCSHS have each sown since the beginning of the first semester; such seedlings have long since matured into a tree, and thus once again bore fruits after the first harvest. The students now reap off the tears, stress, and hard work they have painstakingly sprinkled on the tree as they now bask in pride after they survived the dreaded first semester.

On Friday the 13th of December, the mark that officially ends the first semester has loomed over OCSHS; every section held their 2nd Portfolio Day in their respective classrooms. Just like any student on any cards out day, some trickled tears of joy, while some had veiled disappointments creep them from the inside.

Some students may have forgotten this, but grades will never delineate someone’s full potential and capabilities; achievement isn’t all about those tiny numbers... it is about the process in which you live the life of a student: the new connections made, new ephemeral memories formed, curiosities that have been quenched, or talents and skills that have been cultivated as you experience new things. Now, what is the difference between all those things and the scores you have always received? They aren’t instilled within your grades, instead, they will transcend those numbers as they will serve as your foundations for the indefinite future that lies ahead.

Just like how stars end as they undergo supernova—a process of destruction that ironically creates an ethereal nebula, a formation of something new—a new

beginning, a new semester has once again begun. But remember: this merely means that another beautiful ending, like a nebula, will form as you continue to tread the path you are on today.

As this portfolio opens a new portal that you must go through as it sparks new starts, the question lies within as to how you will venture into this new realm... will you remain stagnant as you tread your new yet analogous path? Or will you use your past “failures” to uphold the expectations that others or you, yourself, have set, and use this new beginning to mirror the person you can always become?

VIRUS VIES LIVES: What is hMPV?

Within the last two weeks, an epidemic of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) a respiratory pathogen that generates a wide scale of symptoms, from mild sore throat to intense respiratory infection emerged in China and swept the minds of people concerned.

In this regard, most hospitals confirm a sharp surge of patients, particularly children and senior citizens. This outbreak brought about the need to understand hMPV a virus that, although widespread globally, is less recognized than more prominent respiratory pathogens.

The hMPV is classified as a member of the family Paramyxoviridae viruses, the group that includes causative agents for mumps and measles. This virus was described first by researchers from the Netherlands in 2001; since then, it has contributed significantly to respiratory tract infections.

Symptoms resulting from an HPV infection include: coughing, nasal congestion, sore throat, fever, and, in more severe cases, wheezing and shortness of breath. The virus can cause major problems, especially in high-risk groups, though supportive care will help the majority of patients recover.

Due to this, reported hospitalizations from key cities in China have been extensive, which has caused a sharp increase

in respiratory infections. This surge, which happens at the peak of the respiratory illness season, further burdens healthcare systems that are already dealing with influenza and other viral diseases.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already issued guidelines that urge people to avoid crowded settings, wash their hands often, and wear masks as preventive measures. While public health initiatives were undertook to curb the spread, schools have also been temporarily shut down in different provinces.

Unlike influenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), hMPV is not as familiar but it is a major contributor to respiratory disease worldwide. Emerging studies, of which the most recent was reported in The Lancet, now establish that hMPV ranks the second most common cause of pneumonia after RSV among children. There is growing public health awareness related to the hMPV; thus, improved diagnostic capacity for this virus must be emphasized as well.

OCSHSians bag gold in RSTMF 2024

NOVEMBER 5-8, 2024 — Mathematics researchers from Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS) reigned supreme in the recently-concluded Regional Science, Technology, and Mathematics Fair at Tacloban City.

The victors, Dave Matthew C. Alcarez, Alex Huan Karl A. Ascura, and Benedicto R. Lambonao III, were Ormoc City's research team for the Mathematics and Computational Science (MCS) category. They snagged the golden podium finish for Best Project and Best Presenters.

It was worth it

“We had misunderstandings, setbacks, and miscommunication—but in the end, it was all worth it," Ascura said.

According to them, they had prepared for the competition two months prior. All that was left to do was to study and practice further.

"As for the preparations, we were more like workers than students for two months," Lambonao said. "We just needed to practice and practice until we were satisfied with our performance," Alcarez added.

They will represent Region 8 for the National Science, Technology, and Mathematics Fair, the date tentative.

As of now, no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine is available for hMPV. Treatment aims at relieving symptoms by advising rest, hydration, antipyretics for fever, and supplemental oxygen in serious cases. Precautions as with other respiratory viruses would be essential to prevent its further spread. It includes frequent hand washing, sanitizing of frequently contacted surfaces, avoiding contact with others who are suffering from the illness, and even wearing masks when in crowded areas or high-risk settings.

The China outbreak reiterates certain global health risks; the easy mobility of patients due to removed pandemic restrictions facilitates the spread of respiratory viruses such as hMPV. Thus, it has underlined more emphasis on vigilant surveillance, diagnostics, and newer vaccines and therapeutic antivirals. Hence, various public health institutions across the world also include the World Health Organization in the watch group, with mandates to be actively alert to monitor any forms of respiratory outbreaks.

Mask Up:

Are we ready for another pandemic?

It’s been five years since the pretagged ‘pneumonic virus’ dawned on humanity—five years of terror, dread, and panic. This virus went on for months to be labeled as COVID-19, and within those passing days, months, and years, were grievously concealed anxiety under thin layers of masks and fabric.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) pronounced COVID-19 a global pandemic and appealed for people to obey the precautionary measures for their safety and strict homestays. Since then, as of December 2024, the virus had infected 4,173,631 and resulted in more than 60,000 deaths. Now, everything is hunky-dory, but one thing’s for sure: people’s lives were never the same again.

What did COVID-19 teach us if not the value of a strong healthcare system and the power of scientific research? The pandemic exposed our vulnerabilities, and though the Philippines made strides—in expanding hospitals, building infectious disease centers, and boosting laboratory testing—are these efforts truly enough? Investments in the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and the Philippine Genome Center allowed progress in viral research and vaccine development. These victories deserve recognition, but the question remains: Did we rise to meet the challenge, or are we still falling short?

Imagine rural barangays far from city hospitals, with minimal medical equipment. Can we call our system prepared when these areas remain neglected? Incredible technological advancements mean little without equitable access. A nation’s healthcare is only as strong as its weakest link. It is technology that will drive the next pandemic response—artificial intelligence forecasting outbreaks and managing resources—unless rural areas remain disconnected from internet access and digital tools. Misinformation, another pandemic in itself, demands action. Trustworthy health communication and media literacy are not luxuries—they are necessities. True preparedness means readiness, access, and trust for all.

However, preparedness is not just about technology or infrastructure; it is about people. Filipinos have shown their resilience, but resilience without preparation is a gamble. Imagine a nation where pandemic drills are as routine as earthquake drills, where communities are trained in health crisis management, and where local government units are armed with resources and clear protocols. Can we develop a culture of readiness before the next emergency strikes? This is determined by the choices we make today.

The next pandemic could come—it could be a matter of time. But will we meet it with fear or with the strength, unity, and scientific capability that we’ve worked so hard to build? The choice, and the challenge, are ours.

Technology for HumAIne Labor

With convenience comes reliability, vulnerability, and dependency. Every day, the lives and customs of the global population rely on the convenience innovation has brought upon them. With the inevitable pursuit of knowledge, the laboring jobs of humans are in a perilous state. As modernization continues to progress in technological breakthroughs, will civilization finally realize innovation’s double-edged sword? Or will they eventually find utmost comfort in the dawning benefits of pixelated machinery?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most integral technological breakthroughs in modern society. According to the AI Statistics of the U.S. National University, 77% of companies globally have integrated AI into their businesses, intending to further refine their entrepreneurial dynamics. With this, the risk of the vanishing presence of manual labor is gradually on the rise, significantly manifesting a high potential of sedentary lifestyles and dependency among humans.

Today, AI has proliferated its ideologies in different fields, especially in education. Students globally are at high exposure to

AI, with their intellectual abilities stripped off by artificial knowledge, their fate is no different from their deteriorating critical thinking skills. With this pressing issue in a prominent chokehold, the lives of the people in future generations are jeopardized by this “breakthrough”.

This revolutionary invention is consistently growing pervasive not only in education, but also in sectors such as healthcare, banking, and transportation. Now, to develop comfort in the hands of technology, the global population is on the rise for either a great downfall or an opportunistic development. With personalized technology interfaces, these humans are bound for what is meant to be great, allowing them to take convenience at a normalized state. Yet, what if normalizing this does not only benefit convenience but also the degradation of lifestyles?

In the future, AI will be seen as a transformative force manipulating people like child’s play. Imagine having to wake up late in the morning not worrying about having to work as an architect just because some AI can generate design more accurately and beautifully. Such a pleasant life, or is it?

In a world where contradictions contradict themselves,

convenience can become hectic. With convenience comes dependence, and when we depend on others to do the job for us, who will depend on us? It is indeed a matter of self-control and manipulation, but the lives of the people are too restless themselves to not rely on someone, or rather— something.

Imagine waking up to too much revolution; wars, conflicts, and disagreements resurface, don’t they? Imagine having to elect a president with their past theses and speeches on the verge of AI manipulation. So pressing, isn’t it?

With AI continuing to progress, people are bound to lack resiliency in the hands of dependency. Potential risks for unserious global conflicts would not only affect us but also the future. So now, it is time to recalibrate our minds and see the future as a testament to critical decisions and indelible thinking. With the rise of AI, it is time to reshape this double-edged sword and forge its way through better intellectual mannerisms and manual labor.

Let us not allow this breakthrough to become a breakdown, instead, we must utilize this in a positive light, not only for the betterment of society but also for the safety of future generations.

INDUSTREETS OF INDUSTRY 4.0

Imagine a world where machines think, factories act, and where everything is interconnected. Gone are the days of old, traditional telephone booths, fragile CD players, or hassling keypad phones, and gone are the days of solely depending on yourself to write simple essays.

Today, we stand in an era where science and technology converge to transform how industries operate, produce, and innovate, and where technology significantly overrules us. This modern manifestation has brought about the era of Industry 4.0, an era of innovation.

Picture a factory where machines predict their own maintenance needs, or supply chains that adjust in real-time to fluctuations in demand. Visualize a better version of your home, food, or even yourself. Envision a lifestyle where there is no intensive workload of stacking literary assignments or endless laboratory reports. This is no longer a dream, but a reality ushered in by Industry 4.0.

Industry 4.0, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), is a newly coined term referring to the rapid technological advancement of the 21st century. This era uses technology to increase efficiency and productivity and is characterized by the use of smart technologies and automation to create a more interconnected network for manufacturing.

But what powers this revolution? The answer lies between the borders of technology and knowledge, which is conventionally forged upon the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These spectacular algorithms process colossal amounts of data, identifying patterns and making decisions that optimize processes. Whether it’s predicting market trends or enhancing energy efficiency,

AI is the silent force driving industries forward, thus creating a society where progress is inevitable.

Moreover, Industry 4.0 entails Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) which are technologies that utilize 3D models that have been revolutionizing training and maintenance. With these, engineers can now visualize complex systems in 3D or simulate repairs before ever touching a wrench. The result? Safer workplaces and faster problem-solving.

However, as the saying goes: “With every benefit, are underlying consequences.” This quote expresses how the benefits of Industry 4.0 can be dazzling, unbeknownst to its underlying share of challenges. Cybersecurity, an important feature of digitalization, has taken center stage, as interconnected systems become prime targets for hackers. This prompts the idea of having industries bridge the gap between legacy systems and cutting-edge technologies, a task that requires both investment and expertise. Perhaps the most pressing issue is the workforce—how to equip workers with the digital skills needed to thrive in this new landscape and the ethical manner to allow them to use these technologies wisely and responsibly.

Despite these hurdles, the future shines brightly for Industry 4.0. It promises more than just smarter factories; it heralds a sustainable tomorrow. Energy-efficient operations, reduced waste, and innovative solutions to global problems are just the beginning.

In the Philippines, Industry 4.0 has built a prominent image in its society. From the typical ChatGPT to the fascinating remote vacuum cleaners, the country has recently been under the transcending force of AI and its products. With the Philippines’ thriving tech-savvy population and an expanding startup ecosystem, the country is poised to embrace this revolution. However, the Philippines risks persisting issues of prejudice and discrimination, leading to the arousal of conflicts in the possibility of leaving behind rural and remote areas to create an inclusive digital economy. But, for the country, embracing this revolution could mean not only economic growth but also a more competitive and resilient future, not only for the benefit of the Filipinos but also for the following generations to come.

As Industry 4.0 continues to unfold, one thing is clear: it is more than a technological shift—it is a dawning foundation for change and its upbringings and it challenges us to rethink how we work, live, and innovate. Industry 4.0 is not just an era, but an opportunity for industries to recalibrate the system and open doors to untapped dilemmas. But, its foundation lies in its inclusivity—ensuring that every individual, business, and community can harness its potential. With knowledge comes its products, and as we stand on the cusp of this transformation, the question is not whether we are ready for Industry 4.0, but how we can shape it to benefit all and see the world as we stand in the streets of Industry 4.0.

“The winner takes it all, the loser has to fall…”

In the world of sports, athletes are celebrated as icons of excellence, determination and sacrifices. They hold a big influence that can ignite passions in fans, carry hopes for the nation, and rig out a moment of joy and unity. But underneath this glory of world-breaking records and podium finishes lies a truth untold: many athletes are overshadowed, especially those who compete in less-commercialized events, struggling with the sad and harsh reality of poor funding.

It’s undeniable that there are some sports who enjoy the lavish substantial financial back up, while others struggle and have to make the most of what only they have. Yet, they have to share the same responsibility—to bring home the glory. For instance, let’s take the case of elite-level basketball and football players. A basketball player may earn more in months than a footballer does in a year. However, both still dedicated their blood, sweat, and tears to grueling training regimens, enduring both physical and mental challenges, and competing at the best condition possible.

Grassroots sports programs, like the Batang Pinoy or Philippine Youth Games, which serve as the foundation where future champions are nurtured, often face severe underfunding. These programs are vital for identifying and nurturing talent in local communities, yet they frequently operate on pint-sized budgets. Investing in grassroots development is not just about producing elite athletes; it’s about fostering a culture of participation, inclusivity, and community pride. By addressing these gaps, sports bodies can ensure a steady pipeline of talent for future generations.

Athletes encourage us to dream big, to strive for greatness, and to overcome obstacles. But their journey to triumph should not be hindered by systemic inequities in funding. It’s time for stakeholders in the sports world to change how resources are distributed, ensuring that every athlete—regardless of their sport or background—has the opportunity to shine. After all, the beauty of sports lies in its universal appeal, and that can only be achieved when the playing field is truly balanced.

Villaceran shoots do-or-die, seals EVRAA bout

One point is all it takes!

As the buzzer ticked 10 seconds, Ormoc City Senior High School Sheermasters hastily snatched the limelight from the Western Leyte College Baby Mustangs to edge a buzzer-beating one-point lead (64-63) during the Finals round of the Interschool Basketball Tournament at the Ormoc City Superdome, December 15.

Following the previously lagging second and third quarters (33-36, 44-52), the

Sheermasters decided to up the ante to muster an 8-2 run and inched closer to enemy advantage, 52-54.

As the clock neared midnight, so did the game near its dusk; while the Baby Mustangs strived to maintain their tempo at a three-point advantage (56-59; 60-63), it seemed that the Sheermasters’ efforts lay futile as failed freethrows and one minute left for the buzzer to bell leaned towards the odds of their demise.

“Maka-uli g’yud ko’g sayo ani. Dili ko maka-abot sa Misa De Gallo,” one Sheermasters-supporter audience joked.

However, against all odds and jeers, a Baby Mustangs foul led Villaceran to a freethrow opportunity at 62-63 during the last 12 seconds.

As one ball went through the hoop and the scores at a deadlock (63-63), all spectators watched in awe as the last 10 seconds saw the do-or-die shot loop through the hoop once more, leaving everyone in a standing ovation at the bone-chilling 1-point margin, 64-63.

“Salig lang g’yud Niya!” Was the recurring theme as Most Valuable Player (MVP) Villaceran remarked on their victory.

“Daog na unta mi last time, and painful to siya. Pero og mapilde mi, mas sakit” their Coach, Benjie Inong, said. “Ako sila gichallenge nga og mapilde mo, wala g’yud. [Pero] since nadaog man sila, deserve g’yud nila.”

The Sheermasters’ victory in the Finals means that they will be representing Ormoc City during the upcoming Eastern Visayas Regional Athletics Association (EVRAA), the date tentative.

SuPORT and diVISIONof SIGLAro athletes

Withconsistency, passion, and dedication, all the athletes from different divisions faced off against each other for the spot to compete in the upcoming EVRAA that will be held at Tacloban, Samar, and Maasin. It’s great how Ormoc City is prioritizing and showcasing the importance of sports by supporting the various events here in Ormoc. From the last EVRAA and district meet to division meet, Ormoc City has shown extreme efforts to support athletes.

The support of Ormoc in sports truly demonstrates that sports is not merely a competition but also a way to connect and unite with fellow athletes. It’s impossible to achieve this kind of successful event without the support of the government; it truly shows that they have divided their priorities equally from collaborating with others for various projects to ensuring a safe and successful sports event. Most impor-

tantly, one factor of this remarkable event is the athletes themselves.

All athletes have visions, and these include sportsmanship, dedication, passion, consistency, hard work, and teamwork. These are what it takes to be a great athlete. Additionally, being a student-athlete is not easy, from balancing academics and sports to time management. They have shown determination to achieve their goals. Student-athletes have shown true commitment by dividing their responsibilities and time correctly. These divisions and visions have helped them keep going and attain victory.

Moreover, the event is not all about medals; it is also about the learnings and experiences of athletes that they’ve reached this far. Win or lose, all the athletes have shown their best efforts

from their extensive training, being under the scorching heat for hours, sacrificing their time, and being worn out. This event is a testament to them that no matter what the results are, they are all still winners because reaching this far is considered an achievement.

To be a student athlete, one must have the will to divide their responsibilities and possess great visions to be able to reach their goals. Remember that losing is not a failure but will serve as a lesson to be better next time and improve strategies. Division turns into vision when all athletes unite and work together towards victory. May all the athletes that have won this division meet represent Ormoc with great honor and bring with them the true vision of an athlete to shine on

Maroons climb UP

What an epic comeback!

After a two-year long heartbreak, the kings have finally reclaimed their thrones. With hearts filled with determination and spirit soaring high, the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons snatched back the championship title against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Archers in the third game of UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball Tournament Finals, 66-62, held at Mall of Asia Arena, 15th of December.

Heating up the first minute of the match, the Maroons took the early lead. However, the Archers weren’t giving in, through sheer grit, the Archers fought back, ending the first quarter with a tied score of 21 all.

As both teams continued their pursuit for glory, the

match became more intense. No team is backing down. Each possession, each shot mattered. The roars of the fans echoed through the arena as they stayed on the edge of their seats.

In the start of the third quarter, UP completely dominated the Archers, breaking their arrows. But, the archers stood firm, they continued to fought back, turning defense to offense; they ultimately regain the momentum, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.

Entering the do-or-die quarter, both teams strengthened their defense and tried every angle for a hoop. However, only one must emerge victorious, and UP maroons took that chance, clinching the gold medal after a 2-year silver curse.

GARBEt...

It’s a familiar tension for many high-achievers, where every decision is both a step toward triumph and a brush with defeat. Angel’s journey, from a humble pawn to a towering queen in the competitive chess scene mirrors the very nature of the game she excels at: strategy, foresight, and a will to persevere.

Angel’s love affair with chess began in 3rd Grade, an age when many children were still figuring out the rules. But for her, the board wasn’t just a pastime—it was a space to explore, to push boundaries. And perhaps in a world where girls are often told where they can or can’t be powerful, the chessboard became Angel’s domain. Her brothers became her sparring partners, but in this cerebral battle, she found her own voice. Chess, a game traditionally associated with grandmasters and old men in parks, became her resistance—proving that sport has no age nor gender.

Now, as an 11th grader, Angel has claimed victory after victory, culminating in her most notable achievement: winning the Batang Pinoy 2024 Ormoc City Qualifying Chess Tournament (16-17 Girls Category). Not only that, she swept special awards in Blitz and Rapid— showing her versatility and brilliance on the board. But as her successes mounted, so too did the weight of expectation. The world began to look at her not as a young player, but as a queen expected to win and to win always. The pressure builds as she parkours this terrain, making one wonder if success is truly the gift we believe it to be or just another trap disguised in accolades.

This reveals a broader truth about our society’s love for winners. We celebrate victories but seldom speak about the toll it takes on those who must keep winning. There’s a quiet cruelty in our expectations. The young, talented women like Angel, who break barriers and rise to the top, are often celebrated not for their humanity but for their ability to meet impossible standards. We laud the queens, yet we forget the weight of the crown they wear.

And what about failure? For many, failure is synonymous with defeat. But Garbe wears it as a badge of honor. “Dili mo-stop and keep on practicing kay muabot ra imo time. Kung mapilde ka, dira g’yud ka maka learn,” she says. Setbacks, for her, aren’t meant to halt the journey—they’re meant to sharpen her resolve. This perspective is rare in a world obsessed with perfection, where one misstep can lead to ridicule.

Angel’s story is a microcosm of broader societal truths. We live in a world that praises grit, ambition, and unflinching determination— qualities that we see in her. Yet, we forget to allow space for fragility, for moments where even queens must rest. She walks the thin line between brilliance and burnout. The truth is, chess is a metaphor for the systems we operate in: complex, full of rules, and constantly demanding the perfect move.

So, as Angel Garbe ascends the ranks of competitive chess, the pressure will undeniably continue to mount. But with her faith, her refusal to crumble under expectations, and her recognition that failure is not final, we see a young woman not just playing chess, but playing

Carrying the pride and glory of the Philippines, our very own weightlifting fairy, Hidilyn Diaz, is set to be inducted into the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Hall of Fame after her gold medal finish in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She will be the first weightlifter and third female athlete to receive this feat, following the track and field superstar Lydia De Vega and bowling legend Bong Coo.

The weightlifting icon from Zamboanga City, with a four-time olympic and multi-medalist record, has woven the name of the Philippines after her silver medal finish in the 2016 Rio Olympic that ended the 20-year medal drought, and a gold medal clutch in her journey in 2020 Tokyo Olympic.

Aside from the 2020 and 2016 Olympics, she also made an appearance in the following Olympic games: 2012 London, and her debut in 2008 Beijing. Though she was not able to land a podium finish, she still proudly represented our nation. Apart from her Olympic appearance, she also made an appearance in 2007 Nakhon Ratchasima Southeast Asian Games, where she earned her first medal, bronze.

She will be honored with this award on 27th of January this year during the San Miguel Corporation-PSA Awards Night at the Manila Hotel. Moreover, the PSA will also hand out awards such as the Athlete of the year, National Sports Association (NSA) of the Year, Major Awardees in other sports, President’s Award, Executive of the Year, Tony Siddayao Awards, and Special Recognition to Filipino athletes and para athletes who

Blackwater

ekes out Terrafirma, deprives them their first victory

January 15, 2025— In a crucial match to emerge victorious, an intense showdown unfolds between Blackwater Bossings and Terrafirma Dyips. Bossings denied Dyips their first win in the 49th season of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup after ten games played, ranking in the bottom last after a. Dyips remained winless after Bossings dominated them with 86-96 score.

In the early minute of the match, Dyips completely dominated over the Bossings, leaving them defenseless. They continued to trounce over Bossings half way through the first quarter of the match. However, Bossings are feed up being pushed around by underdogs, they retaliated and turned the game to their advantage. Ultimately sealing the quarter with a 30-34 advantage.

Bossings’ strong supremacy continued to reverberate on the court, leaving a strong note against the Dyips. After the strong counterattack of the Bossings, Dyips slowed down, unable to catchup with the Bossings. Yet, through sheer grit and determination, Dyips manage to pull-off a back-to-back 3 pointer shot to finish the quarter with 49-45 score.

Entering the quarter, both teams are tired, yet still, their hearts still ignite with determination to finish the game triumphant. Both two teams exchanged hoops, not letting one another to end the quarter victorious. Despite the full-blown effort of both teams, only one must emerge glorious in this quarter. Bossings took the chance to demonstrate supremacy, ending the quarter with 6771 points lead.

As the whistle blows for the 4th quarter, the atmosphere became more intense. Both team struggled to dominate one another. Still, both teams exchange dunks and hoops. As the time continued to click, both teams displayed dominance, overwhelming each other. But only the Bossings’ effort shone through, clinching the match with 86-96 advantage.

The air turns heavy with every strike he kicks; hearts grow fond with every smile his victory made; and mankind’s fire grows even wilder with every heave of his exasperated yet passionate exhales as he kicks the door to another victory.

A man of the academe and sports, Keefe Anthony Tamelin is a powerhouse of balance, commitment, and dedication. He is the “won” in “Taekwondo,” and the “K” in “kick”—yet, even without the linguistics involved, he truly is a force to be reckoned with. From his excellence in sports and academics, to the many hearts he captured—one might think his life is one easy ride to guaranteed success.

However, his journey wasn’t always a tame line going upwards; he encountered challenges and setbacks—like his 6th grade crisis with pressure and insecurities that made him question: “is this worth it?” A bronze-clad “failure” during the 2023 EVRAA Meet that made him ask: “am I still enough?” A plethora of negativities, low points in the roller coaster of life—yes, of course he had those.

Vulnerable, bare, naked—human; that was what he felt. However, as he fell twice in a field he is passionate about, his parents and innate willpower made him rise back up for a third try—ready to face the battles and fall and rise again like the ever-so-bright sun that illuminates the glint of his medals. Human, he is—and in his humanity, he is always faced with boundless possibilities. He keeps his timeline as a catalyst to continue moving forward—to keep on reaching goals beyond what he thought were his limits.

One of the limitations in question is the age-old dilemma of student-athletes’ balance between academics and sports. To him, who is also an academic achiever in his own right—academics should not be a sideline to the life of being a student-athlete, but another side of a coin that goes hand-in-hand with athleticism.

“Balancing my sports and studies as a student athlete is not an easy task,” he admitted as he reflected on his experience

as an honor-student athlete, “but I do my best to catch up on my responsibilities in my sport and my academics.”

In line with his sportsmanship, it is evident that he also tends to pick up wisdom from varying sources and connect them to form meaningful insights for future use—may it be in his work ethic for academics or his dedication to his art. However, a more recent and notable experience he shared was his time with the Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2024 as a contender for his faction; he connected his wisdom from the way his discipline led him far in sports, and related the ethic to his pageantry.

“I achieved my goals as an athlete with hard work and determination,” he explained, “The same with pageantry, I worked hard with my fellow candidates; with the help of my trainers to present myself confidently on the stage.”

He reflected further on his juggling between athleticism and pageantry. He realized that, although managing one’s time is imperative to balance, passion must also be a driving force to one’s endeavors. It must be the gasoline to a vehicle of great potential, or the muscled legs of a coup-de-etat kick. Passion, as he explained, should be the starter to everything and the end of nothing.

“My training and preparations for my incoming tournaments did not stop even when I joined the pageant,” he explained. “I managed my time and balanced my two events. After the pageant, I immediately focused my mind on my sport.”

Ultimately, his unique insights can be broken down and glued together into a mosaic where different people view the art differently. His existence—not only as an athlete, but as a unique person—posits uncertainty among those who meet him. His story, despite the clear objective at hand to inform, poses uncertain twists in the different-perspective minds of those who read the passage.

Nevertheless, despite all the different angles one can look his experience as, one thing is certain: as Keefe pro gresses with his endeavors in life, his story can all boil down to four words—just Keefe on going.
