elcome to the March issue of OCIO magazine. I think we can safely say that the winter season is behind us and we can all look forward to the warmer Spring and Summer months ahead. Easter is always a great time to be in Spain, especially as the beaches, beach bars, Chiringuitos and restaurants all begin to come out of hibernation ready for the tourist season, which should take us all the way up to October... fantastic. This month we have put together some great editorial content and features, which we hope you will enjoy as you relax on a beach or perhaps over a sunset Gin & Tonic in your favourite bar or restaurant. . Creo que podemos decir con seguridad que la temporada de invierno está detrás de nosotros y que todos podemos esperar la primavera más cálida y los meses de verano por delante. La Pascua es siempre un buen momento para estar en España, especialmente ya que las playas, chiringuitos y restaurantes empiezan a salir de hibernación listos para la temporada turística, que nos llevará todo el camino hasta octubre... fantástico. ith summer fast approaching, it’s time to head outside and begin preparing your terrace and patio for a fun season of grilling and gathering. Cleaning: A pressure washer is the best way to clean your terrace or patio. Begin on a low setting, and leave plenty of space between yourself and the part of the floor that you’re targeting. At full power and close range, this tool will do more damage than good. If you work cautiously, though, you can efficiently wash away a year’s worth of dirt and grime for a fresh start to summer. Lawn care: If you have a lawn area, start by combing through the grass looking for loose items like fallen branches or forgotten childrens toys. The ideal summer schedule for lawn care is a quick trim twice a week. After mowing, trim up your edges using long handled edging shears for the

Scrub the surface of the cushions with a mixture of warm water and a splash of washing up liquid. Get ready to grill: After a season out of use, your grill will need some attention. Preheat the grill to loosen baked-on bits and when it’s slightly warm, turn it off again and get to work. Scrub the grates thoroughly with a grill brush, then remove them from the grill and soak them in hot water with a squirt of dish soap. Remove the drip pan and drop this in this bucket as well. Cover the heating elements, so they don’t suffer from the fallout, then scrub out the underside of the hood and inside walls of the grill with your grill brush. Uncover the heating elements and gently sweep them off with your brush. Remove the drip pan and grates from the bucket, scrub off any lingering residue, and rinse thoroughly. Reassemble your grill and go over everything with a stainless steel wipe for a sparkling finish. Lighting: Outdoor lighting can transform your space in an instant. The most ecofriendly option is a selection of solar lights. If you have traditional lighting though, check each fixture and replace the bulbs as needed. leaves, dirt, dust, and bugs. Place thoughtful lighting around walkways so guests don’t trip. Add functional outdoor lights to seating and dining spaces where you entertain. Finally, tuck some whimsical garden lights in among your plants for effect. Add some colour: Add a few colourful finishing touches to your outdoor space to create a welcoming area that’s ready for a summer of entertaining. New cushions, a colourful throw here and there, a few outdoor candles and even a rustic picture or two on a newly painted white wall can make all the difference. Put items you don’t need into storage and create a bright open space with plenty of room for outdoor dining, games, and lounging. A wellmaintained space will beckon everyone outdoors to soak up the sun and enjoy the long days of summer. n

hen I hear ladies asking if denim shorts are out of style I start to laugh, as I know these bottoms will never be old fashioned. Why? It’s quite simple, you can wear them anywhere you want, from parties to beach walks, cafe bars to nightclubs, and you can ride your bike in them without worrying that your panties might be seen. Another great thing about these awesome bottoms is the way your backside looks, I mean it is a real must have for those ladies who want to attract attention on their sexy bottom. In terms of style, we must first of all consider our location here in sunny Spain. Our days are bright, crisp and clear, so you can play with colours and patterns. You can style your washed or indigo coloured jean shorts with classic t-shirts, striped t-shirts, semi-sheer crop tops and simple crispy white tops and u

about losing your individuality. There is a huge range of cuts, styles and washes to choose from, so there is a lot of scope to put your own spin on this classic fashion piece. alaga region is fast becoming famous for its fabulous gastronomy scene. With more Malaga restaurants being awarded the coveted Michelin stars this year, and more again being featured in the Michelin Guide, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to fine dining. It’s true that there is something for everyone in Malaga. Personally I love nothing more than whiling away a long lazy lunchtime ‘crawling’ around Malaga’s traditional tapas bars - off the beaten track. Yet from time to time, we all like something a little more discerning, refined; something different from the traditional (albeit much loved) offerings available. One such place which I never hesitate to recommend is La Taberna de Monroy. Situated in a bustling street from where its name derives (Calle Moreno Monroy, locally known as Eat Street) Taberna Monroy is well-renowned amongst ‘foodie’ crowds for their creative menu of ‘mediterranean fusion’

sharing plates. The cosy interior and welcoming staff who speak English add to the popularity of this place. Moreover, La Taberna de Monroy has a sister establishment - La Vinoteca de Moreno, mere steps away! The restaurant and the vinoteca have a fabulous selection of local Malaga and Spanish wines, including Jerez wines (sherries). Ask your waiter to pair your wine to your dishes for a truly gastronomic experience! In the same ‘Eat Street’, we also find two more of my favourite (sister) restaurants. KGB Malaga and Wendy Gamba are famed for their ‘gastro tapas’. Maybe when you think of a tapa you think of the bite-sized morsel you get free with a drink sometimes, but trust

Con cada vez más restaurantes malagueños galardonados con la codiciada estrella Michelin, y muchos de ellos siendo incluidos en la Guía Michelin, tenemos mucho donde elegir para disfrutar de una buena cena. La cierto es que en Málaga hay restaurantes para todos los gustos. Personalmente, no hay nada que me guste más que alargar el almuerzo deambulando por los tradicionales bares de tapas malagueños – los más desconocidos. Aun así de vez en cuando a todos nos apetece algo más audaz, refinado; algo distinto a la tradicional (aunque muy querida) oferta disponible. Uno de estos lugares que nunca dudo en recomendar es La Taberna de Monroy. Situada en la bulliciosa calle que le da nombre (Calle Moreno Monroy, localmente u conocida como la calle para comer) u OCIO magazine

la Taberna Monroy es bien conocida entre los entusiastas de la comida por su creativo menú de ‘fusión mediterránea’ y raciones. Su acogedor interior y amable personal suma popularidad a este lugar, atendiéndote también en inglés. Además, La Taberna de Monroy cuenta con un segundo local – La Vinoteca de Moreno, a muy pocos pasos. El restaurante y la vinoteca ofrecen una fabulosa selección de vinos españoles y vinos locales de Málaga, incluyendo el Jerez. ¡Pregunta a tu camarero por el mejor vino para tu comida y disfruta de una verdadera experiencia gastronómica! En la misma calle encontramos dos más de mis locales asociados favoritos. KGB Málaga y Wendy Gamba son famosos por sus ‘gastrotapas’. Puede que por ‘tapas’ entiendas ese pequeño bocado gratuito que suele acompañar las bebidas, pero créeme si te digo que los platos y raciones gurmé de estos restaurantes ¡no tienen nada que ver! Desde la conocida Mini-Burguer de Rabo de Buey, servida más de 60.000 veces, a especialidades como el Tataki de Tiburón, el KGB de Málaga ofrece platos con el tamaño ideal para compartir – entre 3 y 6 son suficientes para 2 personas (dependiendo de lo hambrientos que estéis). En ocasiones incluyen en su menú especialidades creadas por Chefs con Estrellas Michelín. Su barra de acero inoxidable y moderna decoración lo distinguen del resto. Yo no puedo pasar una semana sin mi visita al KGB, ¡y tú tampoco deberías! Otro de mis dúos de locales favoritos (este no era un artículo temático, aunque va a terminar siéndolo) son La Cayetana y 34 OCIO magazine
El Imperdible en el muy de moda distrito del Soho. El joven Chef Ignacio Carmona aporta un sabor único a esta zona, sirviendo el sushi más fresco, ensaladas ‘poke’ (un plato de sashimi y arroz originario de Hawai) y mucho más en los modernos menús de estos dos restaurantes increíblemente diseñados. Ambos con cantidad de espacio para sentarse y gran terraza, obligatoria para los veranos malagueños, funcionan todo el año si deseas algo especial y un poco distinto a los sabores mediterráneos tradicionales. Siguiendo con el Soho, tengo que mencionar el exquisito Antxoeta. Comida de calidad que no tiene precio. El Chef Pablo Caballero ha creado un espacio que es único e íntimo, con un menú para morirse. Desde los más frescos escalopes al mejor plato de lengua, el Chef Pablo ha diseñado un menú que es imaginativo pero no artificioso, simplemente delicioso - ¡de visita obligada! También en el centro, la recientemente inaugurada marisquería Cal y Canto, en

me when I say that the gourmet sharing plates in these restaurants are a far cry from that! From the famous Oxtail Mini-Burger which has sold over 60,000 times, to specialities such as Shark Tataki, KGB Malaga produces plates that are the perfect size to share - meaning you can have 3-6 between 2 people (depending on how hungry you are). They even regularly feature specials on the menu from Michelin Starred Chefs. The stainless steel bar and modern decor set it apart from the rest. I can’t go a week without my KGB ‘fix’ and you shouldn’t, either! Another favourite sister restaurant duo (this wasn’t a theme but it seems it’s turning in to one!) are La Cayetana and El Imperdible in Malaga’s oh-so trendy Soho district. Young

Chef Ignacio Carmona brings a unique taste to the district, serving up the freshest sushi, poke bowls (sashimi and rice dish originating from Hawaii) and oh so much more on his modern menus in these two strikingly designed restaurants. Both with large seating areas inside as well as the obligatory terrace for our Malaga summers, these are all-year-round destinations if you want something special and a bit different from the mediterranean flavours. Staying in Soho, I have to mention the delightful Antxoeta. Fine dining without the price tag. Chef Pablo Caballero has created a space that is unique and intimate, with a menu to die for. From the freshest scallops to a best-selling tongue dish, Chef Pablo has created a menu that is imaginative but non-
gimmicky and simply delicious - a must-visit! Staying in the city centre, newly opened seafood restaurant Cal y Canto on sunny and bustling Plaza de las Flores is fast becoming known as the place to go for the freshest fish and shellfish. Daily fresh oysters, mussels, lobster amongst so much more gives them one of the largest fresh fish selections in the city centre. Last visit I tried the tuna tataki and it was divine. The decor gives a nod to a beautiful Greek Island with cobalt blue and white. Cal y Canto also runs regular flamenco evenings. What better way to spend a special evening than eating the freshest seafood whilst enjoying the passion of flamenco…. Now just to find myself a date! Maria Zambrano train/bus station is the wonderful La Pescadería. As the name would suggest, La Pescadería specialises in fish and seafood and are passionate about offering their clientele both traditional and creative cuisine. The fish is fresh from the market on a daily basis and what you see is available to eat in, take away uncooked or even take away fully cooked and prepared for you to eat at home or even at the beach, now there’s a thought. Finally I couldn’t write this article without including one of the most spectacular culinary ‘shows’ of my life. The fabulous La Alvaroteca, situated within a couple of minutes of the Maria Zambrano train/bus station, is home to Chef Alvaro Avila, who alongside Sommelier Christian Postigo has put together the most incredible Degustation Menu. Course upon course the creativity and magic is astounding. I shan’t say too much as I would hate to ruin the surprise but suffice to say in my opinion, the young chef Alvaro is Malaga’s very own Heston Blumenthal. I could go on, and in future editions I surely will! But for this month, all I have left to say is I hope to see you in one of my favourite spots, very soon (and if you spot me, please do say hello). n

Cal y Canto Plaza de las Flores a las hermosas Islas Griegas con azules cobaltos y blanco. Cal y Canto también celebra tardes de flamenco regularmente. Qué mejor manera de pasar una velada especial que degustando el mejor marisco mientras disfrutas de la pasión del flamenco… ¡Solo me falta fijar una cita! Situado a un par de minutos de la estación María Zambrano encontramos el maravilloso La Pescadería. Como su nombre indica, en La Pescadería son especialistas en pescado y marisco y les apasiona ofrecer a su clientela un estilo de cocina tanto creativo como tradicional. El pescado es fresco y traído del mercado diariamente, todo lo que ves está disponible para tomar allí mismo, y también para llevar sin cocinar, o preparado a tu gusto para que lo tomes en casa o incluso 36 OCIO magazine
en la misma playa. Por último no podía terminar este artículo sin incluir uno de los espectáculos culinarios más alucinantes de mi vida. La fabulosa La Alvaroteca, a un par de minutos de la estación María Zambrano, es el local del Chef Álvaro Ávila, quien junto al sumiller Christian Postigo han creado el más increíble Menú de Degustación. Plato a plato su creatividad y magia son asombrosas. No debería decir mucho más para no arruinaros la sorpresa, pero baste decir que en mi opinión, el joven Chef Álvaro es el auténtico Heston Blumenthal de Málaga. Podría continuar, y en futuras ediciones desde luego lo haré. Pero para este mes, todo lo que me queda por decir es que espero veros en uno de mis locales favoritos muy pronto (y si me reconocéis, ¡no dudéis en saludarme!). n

The drop-top DB11 Volante has arrived with glorious a V8, several chassis tweaks and a price tag in excess of 200,000 euros but, do they put this new Aston Martin among the best? T
his is the first drop-top in Aston Martin’s new model line-up, and far from being a simple chopthe-roof-off-a-DB11-Coupe, the Volante has undergone a thorough reworking and upgrade process to ensure it behaves like a big Aston GT should. First, the factor that defines the car: the roof. It’s a new eight-layer fabric hood that, according to Aston, is ‘class-leading’ in many ways. From its insulating properties to the devilishly low deck lid when it’s folded, there’s more to the DB11 Volante than meets the eye. And what does meet the eye is very pleasant indeed. The long bonnet, under which sits a 503bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. The Volante doesn’t get the option of the DB11 Coupe’s V12 and there are no plans for it to feature in the near future, either. u

ste es el primer drop-top de la nueva gama de modelos de Aston Martin, y lejos de ser un simple DB11-Coupe al que se ha descapotado, el Volante se ha sometido a un profundo proceso de reelaboración y actualización para asegurarse de que se comporta como un gran Aston GT debe hacerlo. However, the V8 does exactly what you need it to do. The 0-62mph sprint takes 4.1 seconds, while top speed stands at 187mph and the powertrain’s ‘Sport plus’ mode amplifies the engine’s brawny character without ever becoming too intrusive. The gearbox responds well to manual changes, while the freedom to select the sharper powertrain mode and the more supple chassis setting is welcome. Combined, this all makes it more usable than you might imagine. With the roof down – which can be operated electrically from the key or on the move at up to 31mph, taking 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close – there’s not much noise at all and it’s easy to hold a conversation. There are a few other features Aston’s worked on to deliver this level of usability, too. Those two small rear seats now have enough space for a child car seat. The boot will also swallow two sets of golf clubs,if you’re that way inclined, or a pair of small suitcases for that perfect weekend getaway. All in all, Aston Martin fans will surely love this new model. Sure it comes at a price but there is no arguement that this is a wonderful machine and actually, it is surprisingly good value for money for the price bracket that it sits in, as though that has anything to do with it. It’s a new model Aston Martin... it was never going to be cheap - but it was always going to be good! n 54 OCIO magazine

mantener una conversación. Hay algunas otras características en las que Aston ha trabajado para ofrecer este nivel de usabilidad. Aquellos dos asientos traseros pequeños, tienen ahora espacio suficiente para un asiento de seguridad para niños. También el maletero puede recibir dos juegos de palos de golf, si a usted le gusta, o un par de pequeñas maletas para una maravillosa escapada de fin de semana. En resumen, los fans de Aston Martin seguramente adorarán este nuevo modelo. Seguro que tiene un precio, pero está claro de que se trata de un coche maravilloso y, en realidad, es sorprendente la buena relación calidad-precio que tiene en el segmento de precios en que se encuadra. Es un nuevo modelo Aston Martin... nunca puede ser barato - pero siempre será bueno! n
