Preamble
Rotary Day at the United Nations Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and share similar visions for a more peaceful world. In 1945, nearly 50 of the 800 delegates representing their governments at the San Francisco Conference to draft the UN Charter were also members of Rotary. The role of Rotary clubs in promoting understanding among nations, providing a platform for dialogue, and creating positive change in communities around the world provided valuable support for the newly established United Nations.
Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and share similar visions for a more peaceful world.
Rotary and the United Nations have since built a strong and productive partnership. In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) that includes the World Health Organization and UNICEF, along with other key agencies. Today, three countries remain polio endemic: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Less than 40 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. Rotary holds the highest nongovernmental consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which oversees many of the UN’s specialized agencies. Rotary maintains ties with the United Nations and other organizations through its network of 30 representatives in 15 capital cities around the world. Rotary representatives, including two youth representatives, serve as unofficial ambassadors, meeting with colleagues to share information and opportunities for collaboration. Rotary’s representative network is active at the UN offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna, and the Economic Commissions for Africa, Asia, Western Asia, Europe and Latin America. Rotary also has representatives at UNESCO, UN-HABITAT, the UN Environment, the Food and Agricultural Organization, World Food Programme, UNICEF, WorldHealth Organization and World Bank. Rotary Day at the United Nations is an annual event organized by Rotary’s Representatives to the UN to celebrate our joint efforts and inspire further collaboration for a sustainable world. This is the first time the event is being held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Rotary Representative Introductory Words “The enterprise that does not innovate, ages and declines. And in a period of rapid change such as the present – the decline will be fast.” – Peter Drucker (1909-2005). The leader of tomorrow is the one that seeks solutions to problems that are not yet fully understood today. These include numerous socio-economic and humanitarian challenges across the world over. Often times, these challenges only spell doom for the faint-hearted. Not so for Rotarians. As per our 2018-2019 theme by President Barry Rassin, we choose to “Be the Inspiration”! We want this to be sustainable, so we further chose to walk and work with our youth. While the more experienced Rotaraians continue to use the ‘tried and tested safe methodologies’, our youth see no reason to ask; why not? The theme Youth Innovation: Crafting Solutions for Emerging Challenges is an opportunity for the youth to showcase new innovations and approaches to emerging humanitarian challenges. The 2018 Rotary UN Day promises to be a day of discovery and realization that even as the baton passes on to the young leaders, it is not just a change of faces but a change in ways of thinking, doing things and finding solutions. Rotary remains committed to empowering the next generation of leaders. In this regard, six People of Action, all under the age of 35, will be honored for their contribution to humanitarian work.
In addition we will have an opportunity to listen to 14 teams, all under the age of 24, who will be exhibiting their innovations. The future is here, blowing with the wind of change and it is comforting to note that it is in the able hands of our energy-filled innovators. Rotary and the UN have been partners for a long time; in-deed Rotary was instrumental in setting up the United Nations, led by the Rotary club of New York, alongside other Rotary Clubs. We salute President Barry Rassin for his decision to hold this day in Africa, a first! What a befitting honour to our departed Rotarian and Rotary International President Elect 2017 -2018; the late Sam Owori whose wish it was to see this day celebrated in Africa. Rotary’s People of Action Project Title: Intarconnect Mentoring and Inter-Generational Projects Innovation: Pairing members of different generations together in a one-year mentoring relationship so they can learn from each other, share experiences, and take part in service projects.

Description: Kafka together with Philip-Sebastian Marchl and Peter Rabensteiner worked with two Rotary clubs in Austria and BosniaHerzegovina to launch the program, which pairs a member of Rotary with either a member of Interact, Rotary’s program for young people 12-18, or Rotaract, which covers ages 18-30. Other Interactors are paired with Rotaractors. The effort includes leadership training, scholarships, social activities and hands-on service projects, which link different ages together. For one ongoing project, the generations work side-by-side to build houses for families left homeless by the Bosnian War.
Project Title: Innovative New Beginnings Innovation: Training women prisoners on vocational and business skills, and empowering them to create new opportunities for themselves. Description: Using her extensive experience in digital communications, Castro, a lawyer, leads a program that is teaching 170 incarcerated women in Colombia textile skills and how to produce personal wellness kits with products developed from herbal plants grown in their own organic farm. The kits are sold online through the brand, “Alas de Libertad” (Wings of freedom). The women also attend empowerment workshops which reduce their sentences. Castro has led large-scale events in Colombia and Mexico promoting rights for women and children. She is cofounder of Digitally Connected, which unites 430 Latin American experts who are studying online challenges facing children and young people.

Project Title: Full Soul Innovation: Training midwives and supplying safe, sterile child birth equipment to hospitals in Uganda.

Description: Hassan, a public health specialist with a master’s in public health, launched Full Soul to address the lack of facilities for safe and sterile childbirth in areas of Uganda. Maternal Medical Kits include non-disposable childbirth tools (artery forceps, scissors, needle holders) that can be sterilized and reused. The program includes training to ensure the tools are used properly. The kits are assembled by a supplier in Uganda and engraved with the health center’s name to minimize costs, keep kits in the correct facilities, and contribute to the local economy. Positive outcomes include safer births and decreased transmission of HIV.
Youth Innovation: Crafting Solutions to Emerging Challenges
Young Innovators Project Title: Rotaract Club of Nakivale Refugee Settlement Innovation: Organizing young people in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement into a Rotaract club which conducts various service projects improving the lives of a diverse community of refugees in the camp. Description: War brought Mushaho to the settlement in 2016 from his homeland of The Republic of Congo. In response to a competition sponsored by the American Refugee Committee and the Ugandan government, Mushaho entered a winning proposal for a beekeeping business. He earned the right to present his idea to a wider audience in Kampala, where it was seen by Rotary members in Kampala and Minnesota. Recognizing his leadership and charisma, the refugee committee worked with Mushaho to charter a Rotaract club in the settlement. The club has taught farming skills, provided sewing machines for women’s groups, volunteered in maternity wards, organized tree planting and poultry projects, and provided mentoring for young people in the camp.

Project Title: Rotary Club of Kilifi Water and Sanitation Innovation: Traveling to hard-to-reach schools in the Ganze district of Kenya to identify those most in need of new toilets and health/ hygiene education.
Shadrack (Sheddy) Nyawa Rotary Club of Kilifi, Kenya
Description: Waiting in long lines to use inadequate toilet facilities cuts into the learning time for children in the more than 76 primary schools in the Ganze district. Nyawa travels on poorly-maintained dirt roads to conducts assessments for district and global grants that help his Rotary club select the best schools to receive new toilets. He maintains liaison with the local contractor to ensure work is completed and properly documented. Prior to that, Nyawa founded Gedi Community Development Initiative to mentor kids to stay in school and not take part in the beach boy/girl trade prevalent in their resort area.
Project Title: The Ocean CleanX Innovation: Founding a cutting-edge company that is developing new technology to monitor and remove pollution from waterways. Description: Ludovic, a 29-year-old engineer with 12 years of experience in oceanography and mechatronics engineering, launched The Ocean CleanX to develop automated pollution monitoring and removal tools that use artificial intelligence and drones to remove plastics and other pollution from waterways and detect their source. Every year, 8.8 million tons of plastic waste make their way into the oceans, potentially putting 700 marine species at risk of extinction. Ludovic has given presentations that have led clubs to support the effort, provide financial contributions, and volunteer for river clean-up events and efforts.

Barry Rassin
Rotary International President, 2018 - 2019
Barry Rassin is the 2018-2019 Rotary International President. He earned an MBA in health and hospital administration from the University of Florida, and is the first fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in the Bahamas. He recently retired after 37 years as president of Doctors Hospital Health System and continues as an adviser. He is a lifetime member of the American Hospital Association and has served on several boards, including the Quality Council of the Bahamas, Health Education Council, and Employer’s Confederation. A Rotarian since 1980, Rassin has served Rotary as director and is vice chair of The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. Rassin received Rotary’s highest honor, the Service Above Self Award, as well as other humanitarian awards for his work leading Rotary’s relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake there. He and his wife, Esther, are Major Donors and Benefactors of The Rotary Foundation.
Sushil Gupta is the chair and managing director of Asian Hotels (West) Ltd., and owner of Hyatt Regency Mumbai and JW Marriott Hotel New Delhi Aerocity. He is a member of Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest, Delhi, India. He is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2020-21. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. Gupta wants to increase Rotary’s humanitarian impact as well as the diversity of its membership

Michele is the Deputy General Secretary of Rotary International. She is from the Rotary Club of Evanston, Illinois, USA and helps lead the day-to-day operations of the Secretariat, ensuring effective internal operating policies and implementing strategies and programs. Berg graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a major in Italian and earned her MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a dual specialisation in marketing and international business. Berg is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Rotary UN Day Speakers Ms. Hanna S. Tetteh is the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Ms Tetteh most recently served in the cabinet of the Government of Ghana as Minister for Foreign Affairs (January 2013-January 2017), and Minister for Trade and Industry (February 2009-January 2013). Ms. Tetteh is a practising Lawyer and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana, Legon. She also completed her professional law course at the Ghana School of Law, and was called to the Ghana Bar in October 1992.

Erik is the Executive Director of UN Environment since 2016, with an extensive career focusing on environment and development. Prior to his appointment, Solheim served as chair of the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. He has received a number of awards which include: UN Environment’s Champions of the Earth award, TIME Magazine’s Hero of the Environment, and a honorary doctorate from TERI University in India. He is the author of three books.

Salome Gitoho is a Leadership, Organizational Development and HR Consultant passionate about mentoring and has carried out a study amongst HR practitioners in Kenya. She is the lead consultant at Lincoln Consulting. She is a certified trainer with African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) - a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sponsored programme, Management Services for Health (MSH) - a USAID sponsored programme, Centre for Corporate Governance and Professional Trainers Association of Kenya, and is a Certified MBTI practitioner in Africa. She is the Rotary Representative to UN HABITAT and a member of Rotary Club of Nairobi.

Joe Otin is the CEO of The Collective, an interactive ad agency with 25 years experience in advertising, media research & content production. He is the chairman of the Advertising Standards Board, the president of PAMRO (Pan African Media Research Organization), and a member of the oversight committee of KARF (Kenya Audience Research Foundation). He is the Rotary International representative to UN Environment, a member of the Rotary Club of Hurligham and the District Governor Elect of Rotary district 9212.

Stephen is the Director, Corporate Affairs at Safaricom Limited, a leading communications company in Africa and pioneer of M-PESA, the world’s most developed mobile payment system. He is responsible for advising the company on matters relating to licensing, legal affairs, regulation and public policy. Mr. Chege harnesses a wealth of telecommunications professional experience spanning over 14 years in various organizations including Vodafone Group UK. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Dr. Wale is a prolific published author who has written 16 books. He is a leading newspaper columnist, a media personality as well as lead facilitator and consultant at PowerTalks Corporate and Personal Development Consultants. He has contributed extensively to the development of Kenyan leadership by being a facilitator at the Kenya School of Government through the Strategic Leadership Development Program, where he takes the most senior echelons in Government in a course on Transformational Leadership.

He is an ITIL®-certified Consultant with diverse consulting & training experience spanning over 21 years in the IT industry in Kenya and surrounding East African countries. He is the founder and MD of Tiramid Ltd, a regional IT consulting and training practice based in Kenya and with an active presence in greater East Africa. He is also the founder and Secretary-General of the IT Service Management Forum (ITSMF) Kenya. ITSMF Kenya is an accredited Chapter of the it SMF International, an industry body that drives IT Service Management (ITSM) awareness globally.

Sam is the co-founder and the current Director of Nailab Consulting, one of Kenya’s leading business accelelators and incubators. He is a strong proponent on the value of mentorship of young entrepreneurs, viewing them as a critical interface between job creation and poverty eradication in emerging markets. Huston’s vocational raison d’etre is to establish and invest in innovative companies and individuals who will shape Africa’s future through design, technology and advocacy. He is the CEO of Skyline and spends his days working with forward-thinking clients such as Safaricom Alpha to create delightful products that empower global communities. In June 2018, he got listed as one of the Top 30 Under 30 African techpreneurs by Forbes Africa and he is excited to be collaborating with UNICEF as a Youth Advocate, inspiring and creating opportunities for the next generation of young entrepreneurs and mothers.

He presently serves as Managing Director, Broadcast Division of Standard Group Plc, a role he assumed in March 2013 when he joined the company. He previously worked with the Nation Media Group. As divisional MD at Standard Group, his responsibilities encompass leadership of the Group’s TV and Radio operations. He has an avid interest in subjects covering Media and entertainment, Leadership, Christian philosophy and Socio-economics. He is a committed Christian and married with two children.

He started out as an auditor with PwC (global audit & consulting firm) before joining BAT (a multinational FMCG company) and currently works as the Head of Finance for East African Markets cluster (16 countries). He is a qualified accountant and a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Samantha works as an actuarial Analyst at Zamara Actuaries, Administrators and Consultants Limited (Zamara) and has a passion for developing holistic and sustainable solutions for social development using education, mobilisation and technology. She currently achieves this through: engagement with socially driven projects as an actuarial analyst, including work in the healthcare and agricultural spaces; intrapreneurship, by creating and developing initiatives that promote social consciousness in a corporate setting; and entrepreneurship, through her tech start-up Skika Afrika that aims to serve as a career development platform for creatives.

Minu believes in collaboration/partnership to achieve the 21st century Sustainable Development Goals.

Gilda is one of the leading women entrepreneurs in Africa in the ICT sector. She is a pioneer in both Internet Service Provision and Business Process Outsourcing in Kenya having run Skyweb Technologies Ltd as Managing Director since 2002. A graduate of the University of Nairobi, she was appointed in December 2009 by the Office of the Prime Minister to be Chairperson of a BPO/ ITES Advisory Group. Gilda is married with two children and enjoys community service. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Milimani where she has served as a Community Service Director and Club Secretary. She is also a member of OWIT (Organisation of Women in Trade). Gilda Odera has received numerous awards: Africa ICT Achievers’ Award; Top ICT Business Woman 2005; Runner Up, Best Entrepreneur of the Year, 2006 and Developing the Outsourcing Industry in Kenya-2007 by Computer Society of Kenya.
Mark is a 33 year old entrepreneurial businessman, change strategist, trainer, communications expert, political analyst and more recently weekly columnist with the Standard newspaper. He has worked as a communications strategist with various political campaigns in Kenya, Tanzania as well as Ghana. He has a heart for change and strongly believes in the acquisition of new knowledge, new thought processes, a new way of doing things to bring about paradigm shifts both at an individual level and organisational level.

Lis Mullin Bernhardt is Programme Officer, Freshwater Ecosystems, UN Environment. As the Programme Officer in UN Environment’s Freshwater Unit at its headquarters in Nairobi, she helps put into place and implement the organization’s global Freshwater Strategy 2017 - 2021, with a focus on SDG implementation relating to water quality and pollution, freshwater ecosystems, IWRM, and water-related disasters and conflict. She is a project manager with extensive international project management and communications experience (10+ years) at the United Nations and other international organizations. She has strong experience conceptualizing and implementing projects (scientific and environmental training courses, meetings, workshops) on five continents. Her expertise includes strategic planning, project management, organizational culture, logistics, external and public relations, event coordination, and communications including publications, films and other PR material.

Rotary UN Day Speakers Michael is the Founder and CEO of Miti Alliance, a social enterprise operating in Kenya focusing on planting and growing trees. His background is on project management and is currently a master’s student on energy and sustainability. Through his career, Michael also served for four years as the country manager of Givewatts East Africa Ltd, a social enterprise that implements and monitors its own distribution of renewable energy solutions. In his capacity, he serves on the board of Young Scientists Kenya and also Palmhouse foundation, whose focus is on STEM and education sponsorships respectively.

Dr. Ruldolf is the World Health Organization Kenya Representative. Mr. Schultink is the UNICEF Kenya Country Office Representative. Mr. Schultink, a national of the Netherlands, joined UNICEF in April 1999 and has held a number of senior positions both at Headquarters in New York, most recently being the Chief of Nutrition. He has written extensively about nutrition issues in the developing world in both academic journals and specialized books. Before joining UNICEF, he had extensive experience working with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation between 1990 and 1999. He served as an advisor on issues of curriculum development of post-graduate courses and research management in community nutrition.

Peter is a qualified Barrister and Solicitor; after 16 years in the World Bank. He retired from his position as Lead Counsel but continues with the bank as an International Legal Consultant based in Washington, DC. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. He has served as a District Governor and on many Rotary International and Rotary Foundation committees. In 2010, Peter was awarded the Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service Award to Humanity, and received the Citation for Meritorious Service in 2015.

Ed Futa is a past General Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, he managed operations for one of the world’s largest global humanitarian service organization with 33,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographic regions. Futa comes from Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was president of an international marketing consulting firm. He is a keynote speaker at many Rotary International events including club and district conferences and international assemblies and conventions.
