Welcome to the 18th annual SeaChange Summer Party!

Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate the oceans. We are grateful for your generous support of Oceana’s campaigns to restore ocean health and abundance. Together, this incredible SeaChange family has raised more than $21 million to safeguard the oceans off California and around the world.

We are honored to welcome back award-winning actor and Oceana Board Member Sam Waterston as our host. Sam will help us celebrate tonight’s honorees – acclaimed scientific documentarians and longtime SeaChange supporters, Barbara and Greg MacGillivray, founders of MacGillivray Freeman Films and the MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation. And we’re thrilled to close the evening with a special performance by awardwinning country music star Charles Kelley!

As we gather this evening overlooking the Pacific Ocean, we are reminded that where we live is beautiful and extraordinary. Tonight is also a celebration of the waters right here in Southern California that are home to such vibrant biodiversity they are often called the “Blue Serengeti.” These waters are home to whales, dolphins, sea lions, kelp forests, and vital fisheries – and Oceana is fighting every day to protect them.

Since we last met, Oceana helped pass a new law in California banning all plastic bags at grocery store checkouts – a huge win against one of the deadliest threats to ocean wildlife. And we’ve championed similar laws in Washington and Oregon in the fight against plastic pollution.

Oceana’s impact also continued to grow internationally, achieving 16 victories in just the last year. In Mexico and Chile, we helped create new marine protected areas that preserve critical habitats, protect marine wildlife like sharks and turtles, and support the recovery of fish populations vital for local fishers. In Europe, we reduced the use of bottom trawling –one of the most destructive and wasteful fishing methods – in the West Mediterranean. And in the United Kingdom, Oceana and our allies helped protect a commercial fishing ban on sandeels, a fish population that’s been declining for decades.

Last year, we told you that Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, had removed plastic air pillows from its delivery packaging in North America. Since then, the company has removed all plastic air pillows from its delivery packaging at fulfillment centers worldwide. This great news follows campaigning by Oceana and demonstrates to other major companies that plastic reduction is possible on a global scale.

These victories are only possible because of you, and we’re excited to celebrate them with you tonight. We hope this event leaves you inspired, because we aren’t slowing down! With your partnership, Oceana will continue to make major progress – because a healthy ocean is every child’s rightful inheritance.

For the oceans,

Oceana Board Member

SPECIAL GUESTS

Honoring — Barbara and Greg MacGillivray

Greg MacGillivray, Chairman / Film Director, MacGillivray Freeman Films

Greg MacGillivray has been producing and directing award-winning films for more than 50 years. He started making surfing films when he was just 13 and later partnered with Jim Freeman to form MacGillivray Freeman Films in 1966. Today, he has more than 60 films to his credit, including more than 45 IMAX documentaries, which are among the most enduring films in the giant-screen

genre. He has shot more 70mm film than anyone in cinema history and is the first documentary filmmaker to reach the $1 billion benchmark in worldwide ticket sales. Greg has received two Academy Award nominations for Best Documentary Short Subject for The Living Sea and Dolphins. In 2002, the Giant Screen Theater Association honored Greg as one of the five most important contributors to the success of the IMAX industry. Greg shares his personal journey as a self-made filmmaker in his new memoir, Five Hundred Summer Stories.

Barbara MacGillivray, Director of Research

Dr. Barbara MacGillivray has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Cornell University. She worked for 30 years in Children, Youth Services for the Orange County Health Care Agency as a Licensed

Master of Ceremonies — Sam Waterston

As a member of Oceana's board of directors, Waterston brings to the organization a wealth of talent and resources in support of Oceana's programming and mission.

"I've loved the ocean all my life," explained Waterston. "As a New Englander, I've seen the nasty effects of fisheries collapses on the life of seaside towns. Scientists now warn us that unless we do something, the world is on a path to

global fishery collapses by mid-century, a calamity of mind-boggling proportions we can still avert. The time to act is now, which is why I'm very happy to be working with an organization as effective as Oceana."

Waterston was born in 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his father was a language teacher, and his mother was a landscape painter. He attended preparatory schools Brooks and Groton before earning a scholarship to Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Later that year, Waterston made his New York debut at the Phoenix Theater in “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad.”

Over the next four decades, Waterston's career goes on to include a plethora

Clinical Psychologist. She has been active in philanthropic work in Laguna Beach for the School Power Foundation as well as for the Orange County Homeless Shelter (The Friendship Shelter) and for Crystal Cove Alliance. She is also a liaison to the One World One Ocean Foundation’s Science Advisory Council. For the past 40 years, Barbara has worked with MacGillivray Freeman Films in multiple production, research, and development roles. Included among her accomplishments are undertaking research for Journey to the South Pacific, filming Pacific Leatherback turtles in Wermon, West Papua and swimming with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia. Barbara and Greg met in the 9th grade—she sold tickets for his first surfing film—and have two children, Meghan and Shaun.

of film and television credits as well as repeated returns to the stage. His trophy case includes television awards such as the Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild and theater awards like the OBIE and Drama Desk. Other accolades include an Academy Award nomination for his role as journalist Sydney Schanberg in 1984's “The Killing Fields” and six Emmy Award nominations for his roles in “I'll Fly Away” and “Law & Order.”

"We are very grateful for Sam's help," noted Oceana's former chief executive officer Andrew Sharpless. "He gets it. He has closely followed the drumbeat of scientific reports about the rapid depletion of life in our oceans. Everyone recognizes and trusts him. He will be a huge help for our campaigns to bring the world's oceans back from the brink of irreversible collapse."

Musical Guest — Charles Kelley

One third of the Grammy winning country trio Lady A and a charttopping songwriter on his own, Kelley has often stepped outside of his default creative setting…just not this completely. Along with culture-defining hits for his own band, he’s co-penned favorites for Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Brett Young, and more – and with 2016’s THE DRIVER, used his solo debut to explore a vision of the

modern singer-songwriter, leading to another Grammy nomination for the title track, “The Driver” (featuring Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay). Now releasing his second solo album SONGS FOR A NEW MOON on June 25th, Kelley steps into a new chapter, as the 16 tracks seeping with unbridled optimism and irresistible 80's pop flair celebrate an age of renewed possibility and fresh perspective, both musically and in life.

Produced mainly by Sam Ellis and Lindsay Rimes and with Kelley co-penning all the original songs, the project fully embraces a freeing sense of sonic abandon, as the richly textured digital grooves feature roaring saxophones, saccharine guitars and sky-high vocal stacks, pushing Kelley to new levels. For more information and updates on new music, follow Kelley on Instagram, X, and Facebook.

Protecting California’s Waters from Wildfire Runoff

Southern California’s waters are as vital as they are breathtaking — home to extraordinary marine life and thriving coastal communities.

Unlike the rest of the U.S. West Coast, this dynamic seascape blends warm subtropical currents with cold, nutrient-rich waters that rise from the deep. This rare combination fuels one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth, often called the “Blue Serengeti.”

These waters include migratory routes and feeding grounds for endangered humpback and blue whales; nurseries for great white sharks; breeding and foraging habitat for California sea lions, brown pelicans, and giant seabass; vibrant gardens of cold-water corals; and dense canopies of giant kelp forests.

Here, the fishing, tourism, and recreation industries support nearly 600,000 jobs and contribute an estimated $42.3 billion to the state’s economy.

A New Crisis Emerges

In January 2025, wildfires tore through Southern California, leaving a staggering trail of devastation. Lives were lost. Homes and businesses were destroyed. Families were displaced. And not even the Blue Serengeti was spared.

When the fires broke out, researchers from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center were on the water. What did they see? Ash and debris coating the ocean surface as far as 100 miles offshore.

As harmful runoff and toxic pollutants from the wildfires continue to wash into these waters, they are putting this rich ocean ecosystem and local communities at risk.

Marine Life and Ecosystems at Risk

Smoke and ash from wildfires are linked to a number of serious health problems in humans, but we know very little about the potential effects of wildfire runoff on marine life.

Past studies have found that runoff and ash from forest fires can sometimes boost the growth of certain phytoplankton, microscopic algae at the base of aquatic food webs. This could worsen harmful algal blooms.

This is likely the case with a recent algal bloom — one of the worst ever seen off Southern California — that sickened and killed hundreds of dolphins, sea lions, and even whales earlier this Spring. It also poisoned local seafood resulting in warnings to avoid certain species. Recent necropsy results by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center

and the Ocean Animal Response & Research Alliance concluded that whales died on Southern California beaches because the fish they ate contained a deadly neurotoxin, domoic acid, from the algal bloom. This crisis happened as ocean observing systems, marine mammal rescue centers, and NOAA response efforts lost federal funding.

Concerns aren’t stopping at algal blooms as scientists are still identifying other threats to marine life from the runoff and ash. For instance, California anchovies, a top food source for many species including whales and pelicans, were spawning as the wildfires began. An oceanographer with Scripps told Bloomberg News in January 2025 that toxins from wildfire runoff “could impede the

development of these eggs and they may turn out to be non-viable.”

Scientists have also reported floating debris off the coast, raising concerns about “blackout” zones where sunlight can no longer reach marine life below. This is especially dangerous for kelp forests, which need sunlight to photosynthesize, and have declined in recent years throughout California. Kelp forests are a key part of Southern California’s marine ecosystem, providing essential food and shelter to many ocean animals.

Investigations Continue

While scientists are concerned about potential health and environmental risks tied to wildfire runoff, there is still a lot to learn.

Harmful runoff and toxic pollutants from the wildfires are putting ocean life at risk.

Local organizations like Heal the Bay are actively studying these impacts and what they mean for local communities and wildlife.

Heal the Bay’s Annelisa Moe said, “Wildfire impacts extend far beyond the shoreline. The ash, debris, and toxic chemicals from these devastating fires are flowing into our rivers and reaching the ocean, posing serious risks to marine life and public health.”

Heal The Bay tested ocean waters off Los Angeles after the fires and found levels of copper, beryllium, nickel, lead, chromium, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons above what’s considered safe for fish and marine life — in some case, five times higher. In the aftermath of the wildfires, the California Department of Public Health warned the public not to consume bivalve shellfish, sardines, or anchovies from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Heal the Bay’s research is ongoing.

and debris from more than 300 destroyed homes still sits below the tide line.

“While some testing and cleanup is underway, much more is needed,” said Elizabeth Wahler, Oceana Board Member and Co-Chair of Oceana’s SeaChange Summer Party. “It’s clearer than ever that investment in our ocean’s health is urgent and necessary. At Oceana, we’ll continue to push for bold action from government leaders to ensure the impacts of the wildfires are addressed and our coastal waters remain healthy and productive.”

For more than 20 years, Oceana has campaigned to protect the waters off Southern California and around the world. In just

the last year, Oceana and its allies have protected Southern California’s coastlines from new offshore drilling, achieved key plastic reductions in California’s grocery store checkouts, won new regulations to reduce the impacts of Southern California set gillnets, helped save whales and turtles from deadly entanglements in California’s waters, won a lawsuit to force the government to rebuild the sardine population, and so much more.

“Your support powers Oceana’s campaigns,” adds Wahler. “Together, we can protect Southern California’s — and the world’s — oceans and leave a legacy of healthy, thriving seas for generations to come.”

A percentage of proceeds from tonight’s SeaChange Summer Party will be donated to local ocean conservation organizations and LA fire relief efforts, including Heal the Bay.
