Ready when the writ comes down Kitchener-Conestoga riding associations prepare for federal election call expected for October STEVE KANNON Speculation a federal election could come as early as Oct. 14 has local riding associations gearing up to do battle. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has hinted he’ll pull the plug on this session of Parliament before Monday, when three byelections are to be held. We’d head to the polls the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

“It looks almost certain we’re headed in that direction,” Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht said Wednesday of a fall election, adding nothing has been confirmed at this point. Once the call is made, however, expect to see the incumbent become the target of the opposition candidates taking aim at the Conservative government. Albrecht will be facing Liberal challenger Orlando Da Silva and Jamie Kropf

of the Green party. The NDP has yet to name a candidate for the riding. “We’re ready to go. The team is in place. We’re just waiting for the nod,” said Da Silva, who expects the economy and the environment to be front and center in the race. “I think we need better managers of the economy. We need to deal with the troubles in the manufacturing sector and to make sure we don’t fall into a See ELECTION page »08
