store.” The new facility offers about 1.5 times more space than the current building on Church Street. “It will let us expand our offerings, that’s for sure,” said Foodland owner Doug Pagett. “Everything else, there’s just more of what we had.” Sobeys Inc.’s decision to close the Price Chopper in Elmira in September and transfer the Foodland operation to
Just how hockey mad is Elmira? That’s the question as the town vies to be crowned Hockeyville in 2009. Kraft Hockeyville is the name of the popular CBC television reality series that has communities across Canada showing off their passion for the game. “We thought this would be the perfect time, with the new rink going in,” said Graham Snyder, one of the people spearheading the entry. His small group – Snyder, his wife LuAnn, Larry Farr, Deb Good and Brent Bloch – is hoping the rest of the community will jump on board. The initial submission highlights famous Elmira alumni, the community’s outpouring of support after the death of Dan Snyder, and a new arena being built in his name. They’re hoping to get further submissions from former players, minor hockey, and people who remember the old days of playing hockey in Elmira. Entries are judged on three categories: passion, community spirit and originality. “Our passion has been apparent for a lot of years,” Snyder said. “We’ll see how original we can get.” The town or city that is named Hockeyville will have an NHL preseason game played in their community, a CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from their community, and $100,000 to upgrade their home arena. The Hockeyville title has previously gone to Salmon River, N.S., North Bay, Ont. and Roberval, Que. There are already 240 communities

Foodland’s departure signals changes in downtown elmira
Grocery store set to relocate next week despite efforts by Elmira BIA, residents MARC MIQUEL HELSEN Decades of grocery shopping in downtown Elmira come to an end next week, as the Foodland store makes the move to the south end of town. The supermarket, currently located at the corner of Church and Arthur streets will open its doors Nov. 21 at the site of the former Price Chopper store.
“We’re planning our grand opening for that day, and it will be 100 per cent ready to go,” said Tracy Chisholm, director of communications for Sobeys Ontario. The new location, measuring approximately 33,000 square feet, will provide more shopping space and 24-hour service. “It’s going to be a fabulous location and it will be a more robust offering than what we have at the current
