The Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary

What started out as a small idea 10 years ago has grown into one of the most anticipated events of the year, held at the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows.
For the 10th anniversary of the Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival, they are introducing a giant Ferris wheel sponsored by cfsbank offering free rides to the community and beautiful views of the property.
“That’s what this event is all about — bringing people together, showcasing local food trucks, vendors, bands and the casino, highlighting the hidden gems in our region,” said Carole DeAngelo, director of multi-market advertising and events at the Observer-Reporter, who led the charge of creating the event 10 years ago.
Ten years ago, the plan for a food truck festival was born around a table with an amazing team who had recently partnered on a successful Corks and Kegs event.
“This really was a joint venture 10 years ago between the Meadows and the ObserverReporter,” said Kevin Brogan, vice president of marketing at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows. “We were looking for something to spice up Memorial Day Weekend, and the O-R was looking for a space to host a food truck event. We mutually complimented each other in what we brought to the table, and it really made a lot of sense to give this a shot.”
DeAngelo said that from day one, the event has been a true community effort.
“Sponsors believed in it before it was proven, food trucks took a risk on
something that had never been done in our area and vendors showed up, not really knowing what to expect,” said DeAngelo. “It was small in the beginning, but it was built on trust, support and a shared willingness to take a chance — and that’s what made it grow into a true family-focused community event.”
The Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival, hosted by the Observer-Reporter, will take place from May 22 to 24 and promises to be great fun for the whole family. It will feature over 50 food trucks and numerous vendors selling local arts, handcrafted and homemade items, and merchandise.
“The entertainment seems to grow each year with bands starting earlier and playing longer,” said Brogan. “We’re excited this year to be bringing in a Ferris wheel, which will allow some really unique views of the racetrack and festival area.”
During the Food Truck Festival, there will be a family fun night with racing on Friday and live music on Saturday and Sunday. DeAngelo said that at first they brought in traditional favorite food truck fare, such as hot dogs, pizza, Mexican and hibachi, but over time the offerings became much more diverse.
“Now you’ll find everything from Venezuelan cuisine and pierogies to seafood, gourmet desserts, coffee and soul food,” DeAngelo added. “It just keeps getting bigger and better.”
Natalie Domachowski, owner of the Hott Dawgz food truck, was one of the 20 who signed up that first year. Domachowski said that the event has flourished into what it is
today and continues to grow exponentially each year.
Domachowski said that a memorable encounter with DeAngelo and her infectious enthusiasm about the event so many years ago still remains etched in her mind.
“Carole’s words continue to resonate deeply, ‘We are creating an unforgettable experience,’” said Domachowski.
And that they did.
Domachowski said Hott Dawgz’s gourmet hot dogs, adorned with signature toppings, unite people in joy. Their French fries and footlong corn dog, affectionately dubbed the “Sword Dog” (named by Nate Mass of the Washington PA Food Facebook group), remain fan favorites.
“It’s a potent blend of excitement, joy and communal spirit,” said Domachowski. “My cherished moment is witnessing the community converge, from Carole’s team to the Hollywood Casino staff, food trucks and vendors.”
Domachowski said the event has also helped her business thrive outside of the event.
“We’ve encountered remarkable individuals and forged enduring partnerships,” she said. “Gratitude abounds to our loyal patrons and supporters. We’re thrilled to commemorate 10 years with everyone.”
Each year, the festival has grown, and DeAngelo said watching it has been incredible and a little daunting as they map out where the trucks will be placed.
“What started as a simple layout has turned into a full-scale operation,” said DeAngelo.
“The Hollywood Casino at The Meadows team does an amazing job helping us organize, map and orchestrate the entire footprint so everything runs smoothly. It truly takes a village to set this one up — and every year, that village just keeps getting stronger.”
DeAngelo said what started as a foodfocused event has evolved into one of the largest food truck festivals in the region. Sponsorships have also grown, allowing for larger activations and giveaways that enhance the overall experience.
South Hills Lincoln has been a sponsor of the event since the beginning.
“It’s a great opportunity to get our name and our product out not only to the local community but to people coming in from Ohio and West Virginia, where we have had a lot of success selling vehicles to these transient clients,” Jeff Innes of South Hills Lincoln. “Everyone loves good food trucks, and the timing of the event typically leads to a great turnout. It provides us with a great opportunity to let people know who we are and where we are located. Plus, the amazing products we offer.”
Ramil Kunakkulov is the owner of PGH Halal food truck, and has been a participant in the festival since it began.
“We continue to return because of how wellorganized the event is and the incredible community that has formed around it,” said Kunakkulov.
PGH Halal food truck specializes in authentic Mediterranean cuisine.
“Our biggest hits are definitely our lamb and chicken gyros, served with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions and our signature sauce,” said Kunakkulov. “Attendees also rave about our Halal snack pack, which is loaded fries with cheese, chicken, gyro meat and greens, and our mix over rice platters. For those looking for something sweet, our homemade baklavas are always a favorite.”
Kunakkulov said people really love the food, and seeing long lines of happy customers makes all the hard work worth it.
“During the event, it’s a mix of feelings,” said Kunakkulov. “It is always a lot of fun and highenergy, but by the end of the festival, we are definitely tired. Even so, the fun environment keeps us going. My favorite part is seeing our fellow food vendors. Over the last decade, we’ve grown from colleagues into a ‘vendor family.’ It’s a great feeling to see familiar faces every year. Beyond the business side, we get a deep sense of connection to the local food scene and the joy of seeing people enjoy our Mediterranean flavors.”
Brogan said he was excited to get involved in this event again after spending a few years away from Hollywood Casino Meadows at another Penn Entertainment property in Ohio.
“I’m not suggesting the addition of the Ferris wheel wouldn’t have happened this year, but I can tell you, in working with Carole and her team again, I was certainly a huge proponent for it,” said Brogan. “We owe it to our teams, guests and the community to continue to invest in this event; I don’t think anything is really off the table as we look forward to the next 10 years.”
Domachowski said she is proud to be a part of the Food Truck Festival.

The hours of the Food Truck Festival are Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 12 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We built this from the ground up, something that was just a vision has turned into one of the marquee events not just in Washington County, but in Western Pennsylvania,” said Brogan. “We weren’t given a template or really instructions on how to run this event. We went for it, learned and continue to believe we can make it better each year.
It’s amazing to know that we’ve created a new experience for the community as well as an opportunity for the amazing food trucks to showcase their product while having a positive impact economically on the region.”
