’Tis the season for gift giving. While kids typically ask Santa for the latest toy or gadget, parents (and grandparents) searching for other options might consider giving an experience they can enjoy alongside their child. While nontraditional gifts might be hard to wrap up and place under the Christmas tree, they offer the potential to create special family memories long after the last holiday tune is crooned. Ideas range from enrolling a young person in COURTESY OF ERIN RITCHEY a class they might like to try to buying passes for The Ritchey family’s first “yes” day in 2017 was based on the “Yes Day!” book and includa local recreation outlet to simply giving some ed breakfast at Duck Donuts, a museum trip, sledding in the backyard and sleepovers in SEE GIFT PAGE A3 each other’s rooms. Bethel Park High School’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony fittingly occurs in December because the celebration is reminiscent of Christmas. The occasion, held Dec. 13, was an emotional reunion filled with memories of days past with lifelong friends and family. SEE HALL PAGE A2

Christmas is for children as well as the young at heart, and The Almanac wishes all a holiday filled with laughter and love. Pictured, MacKenzie Whitfield, who was with mom Laura of Bethel Park, shares a hearty ho, ho, ho with Santa after telling him she had not been naughty but nice and deserved all the items on her Christmas list. And 1-yearold Blaze Arnold, son of Evan and Sabrina Arnold, also of Bethel Park, plays with an ornament while he waits by the Christmas tree for Santa’s arrival. PHOTOS: ELEANOR BAILEY/THE ALMANAC
