Alice Taylor
As we go through life, we weather many storms. We lose family members, close friends and animals we love, and they take with them the warmth and shared memories of many years. Alice discovered recently that the loss of a much-loved tree, planted before she was born, caused an emotional upheaval she had not anticipated. With the loss of her favourite tree that had enriched her life for decades, she began to ask herself, are there ways to make later life rich and interesting? How do you make growing older a good time in life?
Weathering Storms
Born in 1938, Alice Taylor grew up on a hill farm in
North Cork, a remote mountainous area. Here she lived the old Irish lifestyle, farming with horses, cooking on
the open fire, neighbourliness and mutual support. It is
a way of life now long gone. But in her books she recalls it in all its wonderful detail. Her first book, To School
through the Fields, celebrated the life of a child at this time. Later books tell of adult lives, of women’s lives, and now she is looking at older life. Alice’s books include: To School through the Fields Home for Christmas

As she allowed herself to grieve and remember, Alice thought about the many storms we all weather in life. The older we get, the more we have to face the loss of family members, close friends and animals we love. They take with them the warmth and shared memories of many years. Alice began to consider how best to cope with the challenges of later years. Are there ways to make older life rich and interesting? How can we live a fulfilling life despite limiting circumstances? The Gift of a Garden The Women
When a record-breaking storm hit Ireland, it caused chaos and damage across the country. For Alice, it took away a much-loved apple tree, planted by Uncle Jacky over a hundred years ago. For so long, the tree had been at the centre of her garden, and her life. Generations of children climbed its branches; family and friends gathered beneath this tree for tea and comfort.
