Dear Oakwood Members,

As we welcome June, the Club is fully alive with the energy and excitement of summer at Oakwood. Memorial Day weekend gave us an early taste of the season, with unexpectedly warm weather bringing out so many families to enjoy a fantastic day at the pool. Seeing the Club filled with members and guests enjoying time together was a wonderful way to kick off summer

We also recently concluded our National Membership promotion, which generated tremendous interest and introduced more than 20 golfers from around the world to the Oakwood experience We are excited about the continued growth of our membership community and grateful for the support many of you provided through referrals and introductions.

Looking ahead, we are excited for one of the highlights of the golf season the 1881 Cup Member/Member Tournament. We hope you will join us not only for the competition and camaraderie on the course, but also for the 1881 Cup Surf & Turf Dinner following the tournament festivities.

With golf in full swing, the pool bustling, and a packed summer calendar ahead, this is truly one of the most special times of the year at Oakwood. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and for helping make our club such a vibrant and welcoming community.

VERA TAYLOR | 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Congratulations, Vera, on an incredible 50 years with Oakwood Country Club!

Your dedication, loyalty, and the care you’ve shown to both our members and team over the years have left a lasting impact on our club and community. Reaching this milestone is truly remarkable, and we are deeply grateful for everything you have contributed throughout the past five decades

Vera has served Oakwood continuously since 1976, though her connection to the club began even earlier while working alongside her father in the kitchen. Over the years, she has become an irreplaceable part of Oakwood’s history and tradition, serving as Chef Garde Manger and creating many of the club favorites members know and love including her famous tuna salad, chicken salad, and egg salad. Simply put, everything Vera makes becomes a crowd favorite.

Oakwood has truly been a family tradition for Vera. Her father, brothers, sisters, and even her son Brian have all worked at the club over the years. Brian continues that legacy today, having worked alongside his mother in the Oakwood kitchen for more than 18 years. Vera also worked alongside Chef Storm for more than 30 years, playing an important role in the kitchen through decades of growth and change at the club.

Now 80 years old, Vera continues to bring warmth, consistency,

and care to Oakwood every day. This July, her mother will celebrate an incredible 100th birthday a remarkable testament to a family whose roots are deeply woven into the fabric of Oakwood Country Club

Thank you, Vera, for being such an important part of Oakwood’s history and family. We are honored to celebrate this extraordinary achievement with you!

Dear Oakwood Members,

What a thrilling beginning we’ve had to this season at Oakwood! Our event calendar is filled with activity, keeping us all engaged and energized. We've also seen fantastic momentum with the launch of both our Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues, despite some unpredictable weather at the season's outset.

May was action-packed, marked by numerous events and the exciting kickoffs of our year-long Men’s and Couples match-play championships. It’s been inspiring to witness such enthusiasm across the club.

As we transition into June, the pace continues unabated. This month signals the official start of summer, with activities in full swing. Children are out of school and eager to enjoy more golf, and the course is getting busier every day. We kindly ask for your cooperation in maintaining course conditions by sanding and repairing divots, fixing ball marks on the greens, and observing cart traffic signage to help keep our course in top shape.

Additionally, many of you have noticed some new faces around the club. We are excited to welcome two PGA Professional Golf Management interns from the University of Nebraska Jackson Trout and Landon Mimmick who will be with us throughout the summer. We also welcome Stephanie Cok, our new Retail Assistant, who recently graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Fashion & Merchandise. We’re thrilled to have them join the team!

Landon Mimick is from North Bend, Nebraska, and will be entering his sophomore year in the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska. With a strong passion for the golf industry and professional development, Landon is excited to spend the season at Oakwood learning day-to-day club operations and gaining valuable hands-on experience while getting to know the membership and team.

Jackson Trout is from Chillicothe, Missouri, and will be entering his junior year at the University of Nebraska, where he is pursuing a degree in PGA Golf Management. Passionate about the game and growing the golf industry, Jackson is excited to spend the summer in Kansas City and looks forward to meeting the membership and being part of the Oakwood community.

Stephanie Cok is a 2026 graduate of the University of Missouri–Columbia and joins Oakwood as a Golf Merchandise Retail Assistant. With a strong passion for customer service and retail presentation, Stephanie enjoys connecting with members and guests to understand their needs while helping provide thoughtful style and merchandise recommendations. She is dedicated to creating a welcoming and enjoyable shopping experience while maintaining the high visual and merchandising standards of the Golf Shop.

Still thinking about the golf ball? STOP IT.

The moment golfers become overly focused on “hitting” at the ball, tension creeps in. They get ball-bound, rigid, reactive, and often make an aggressive “attack” motion instead of allowing athletic movement to happen naturally.

Great golf is sensory. On the golf course, try shifting your focus to:

Visualization

Balance

Tempo

Rhythm

Target awareness

On the practice tee, become process-focused instead of outcomefocused. Pay attention to feels, movement patterns, balance, and intention not just where the ball went.

Ironically, when golfers stop obsessing over the ball… they usually start hitting it much better.

Spring weather has been inconsistent this season, creating several challenges for our zoysia fairways. Many golfers may have noticed a brown tint developing in certain areas, and there are several contributing factors contributing to these conditions.

First, we are dealing with significant thatch accumulation in the fairways. To address this, we will be implementing chemical applications along with aerification using our new deep-tine equipment. Second, we have experienced irrigation issues, including systems cycling on overnight and immediately shutting back off.

Lastly, our fairway mower reels have become dull, and we are awaiting the delivery of new grinders to restore optimal cutting performance In the past, I have sent reels to another club or John Deere for grinding, but during the spring season this becomes difficult. Each machine can be out of service for nearly a week, and losing equipment during peak growth periods quickly puts us behind as we saw earlier this spring with the zoysia seedheads. During that time, we had to use a rough mower on the fairways because the reels on the fairway mower were too dull to cut properly.

Throughout May, we also experienced insect damage on several older greens caused by annual bluegrass weevils. This insect is uncommon in the Midwest and typically does not cause significant damage. We have already completed one insecticide application and plan to apply an additional treatment next week as needed.

Our fairways also present unique challenges compared to many other golf courses In several affected areas, we are finding limestone rock just 3–4 inches below the surface. With approximately one inch of thatch and only 2–3 inches of soil above the rock layer, water often hits the limestone and runs off instead of penetrating deeply into the turf profile.

To help improve conditions, we will be applying a wetting agent to all zoysia fairways on Tuesday. This treatment will help the turf retain moisture and improve water movement through the thatch layer. In addition, we will be fertilizing with humic acids to help unlock and utilize nutrients from previous fertilizer applications that have become tied up in the thatch.

Members may also have noticed some inconsistency in green speed and firmness recently. We have intentionally reduced stress on the greens due to the condition of our mower reels. Aerification remains one of the most important maintenance practices for healthy putting surfaces. Since our last major aerification in March, we had not opened the greens until this week, when we used needle tines to improve airflow and overall surface health.

Following the needle-tine aerification, we applied a generous layer of sand topdressing, sprayed a wetting agent, and thoroughly watered the surfaces to help move sand deeper into the profile and prevent excessive pickup during mowing Once our grinders arrive and the reels are sharpened, this process will become part of our regular weekly or biweekly maintenance

Continued topdressing and aerification of fairways, tees, and approaches whenever conditions allow

As always, weather conditions will continue to play a major role in both timing and effectiveness, particularly with verticutting operations, as temperatures cannot become excessively hot during the process.
