Autumn/Winter 2019 Celebrating 110 Years
About Us... Working for our community; caring for animals; making a difference. Oak Tree has been helping animals for 110 years. We are passionate about animal welfare and believe that every animal matters, helping hundreds every year. By the end of August, with your support, we have already been able to help almost 1,300 animals in our region.
Our mission is to help companion animals in need. Finding them a safe and comfortable home and helping the community to understand their needs, through support and education. We find dogs, cats and horses loving new homes, rescuing and rehabilitating them to give them the best chance of a bright future. Rehoming is intrinsically reactive, something has gone wrong. Our proactive community approach seeks to find solutions for pet owners, wherever practical and appropriate, keeping pets in loving homes and avoiding unnecessary stress and heartache. We work alongside our partners at the foodbank, social services, housing associations and other local organisations to help vulnerable pet owners who desperately need our support. We run community clinics and training classes to offer welfare advice and support and we work with schools and community groups to educate the next generation of pet owners. But we couldn’t do anything without you, our amazing supporters. We need to raise £2,100 every day to carry out our services to help the animals and owners in our region. Welcome to our Autumn/Winter Newsletter. What an amazing year it has been celebrating the work of our Charity, its supporters, volunteers and friends over the past 110 years! We enjoyed meeting so many of you at our summer celebration events and hope to see you again at our birthday culmination events in November. The support you have given us throughout this year has already enabled us to help over 1,300 animals and owners in our region; such as Little Waskel, a pony who was unable to walk when he came to us due to overgrown hooves. With your help he is now confident and active, even visiting residents at Eden Valley Hospice for pony cuddles. We were shocked to learn that Carlisle has the largest percentage of “no pets allowed� rental
properties in the UK, leading to reluctant animal relinquishment. We felt we needed to help and our team have worked alongside local letting agencies to develop our Pets in Rentals programme to support landlords and tenants. There have been so many developments in our work this year to help make a difference to animal welfare in our region and to be a voice for animals. However, as our supporters and volunteers, YOU make the real difference enabling our teams to be able to change lives and provide support. Every pound, item or hour of your time helps us to continue our vital work. Thank you so much for everything you do. You are truly amazing.

GOLDEN OLDIES
PIP
As the Charity celebrates a ripe old age of 110 we thought it would be fitting to share the happy endings of two gorgeous golden oldies that came through our doors this year. After 12 years of being a beloved companion, Pip’s owner became ill and had to make the heartbreaking decision to give her up. As an older lady used to her comforts we placed Pip in one of our wonderful foster homes while we assessed her medical and rehoming needs. Pip was a scruffy little ray of sunshine and proved to be a wonderful house guest, greeting everyone she met with a wiggly bottom and lots of kisses! Although a charmer, shortly into her stay she was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The potential complexity and cost of her condition added a challenge to finding her a suitable home. Luckily, Pip was spotted by a family with experience in caring for a dog with pancreatitis. With no qualms about her condition, they arranged to meet Pip and it was love at first sight! Pip is now enjoying life as a country lady, with lots of relaxing and pampering as befits such a regal golden oldie! A big thank you to community choir leader Ellen Mawhinney and local musicians who led our first Sing for a Day event that was enjoyed by everyone who attended
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
FLOSS
Floss came in with 8 other cats after their owner could no longer give them the care they needed. The other cats soon got used to cattery life and all found their forever homes quite quickly but Floss took much longer to adapt. Staff and volunteers spent lots of quiet time in her pen so she could get used to being around new people but it took approximately 3 months for Floss to begin to trust us. We were overjoyed when she began to come out from her hiding place and tentatively interact with us. At 11 years old and needing a peaceful home this lovely lady was often overlooked. It was 5 months into her stay when she was spotted by someone looking to offer a quiet home to a cat in need. Floss, who was still quite shy with new people, took to this person instantly and we were over the moon when they decided to adopt her. Floss is now living a happy life where she spends her days relaxing by the fire and being treated to a life of luxury. Huge thanks to Wannop Developments who delivered much needed sand at a discounted rate and Lloyd Ltd Carlisle who loaned us a Manitou free of charge earlier in the year. Surface was donated by Newton Rigg College Equestrian Centre for our equine intake area and other projects around site. We are so grateful to these local businesses - it really does make a difference! This support means so much for our horses, amongst other things, allowing us a safe space to retrain and rehabilitate our horses in all weathers.

FELL WALKING WITH YOUR DOG Things to consider as responsible pet owners
FRODO’S FROLICS Super Cob Frodo has recently been rehomed along with his Shetland pony friend Wee Mac. The lovely pair went on an adventure to join Johnnie and Tammy who were rehomed from Oak Tree in 2018! Wee Mac is a very nervous pony and his new family took months to build up his trust with them and he is now living the best life ever on the fells of Borrowdale! Frodo didn’t join Wee Mac straight away as he went to driving school first: prior to leaving Oak Tree Frodo had been broken in to ride; he had a slow, relaxed start to his working life and he had a few months off in the winter to take everything in. When he was brought back into work by the Equine Team it was clear he’d absorbed his training. He arrived with a mature head now on his shoulders, continuing to take everything in his stride. Frodo’s attitude to work assured the team that he would have no problem being broken in to drive.
Frodo was professionally broken in to drive. The trainers did an amazing job and rehomer Ruby is over the moon! Frodo has a very bright future ahead of him and he is sure to have lots of fun riding the fells and driving the roads of Borrowdale.

We had a lovely day at our 110th Birthday Party and Pet Blessing at Holy Trinity Church, Wetheral. 2019 has proven to be a busy year for our Community Team and the feral cats we help in Cumbria! So far in 2019 we have helped 95 feral cats in our area by neutering, vaccinating and ear tipping (Jan – July). Feral cats are born and raised in the wild with no human interaction. They cannot be tamed and a cattery environment will have a significant and negative impact on their welfare. Our Trap, Neuter and Return program helps to stabilize the number of feral cats in colonies. Once neutered, they are released to the environment from which they were caught to live out the rest of their lives as outdoor cats. Why do we ear tip feral cats? So that previously neutered cats are easily recognised. With an ear tip, neutered cats are easily identifiable from a distance, therefore there is no need to re-trap, avoiding causing distress to the cat and unnecessary medical procedures.

Oak Tree wouldn’t function without volunteers – a heartfelt thank you to every single one of them! Our regular volunteers who are involved in every aspect of the charity – from helping out in our shops to serving delicious meals in the tearoom, from maintaining the grounds to administrative tasks, from running education sessions to walking dogs, from cleaning the cattery and spending valuable time with the cats to making snuffle mats for enrichment, from fostering residents who might need an extra bit of TLC to artists who share their talents to improve our marketing, from sorting out tack in the tack shop to mucking out fields, from sourcing raffle prizes to encouraging supporters to take on a sponsored challenge event – we are so grateful for the time they regularly give up to help run Oak Tree. Volunteers who help out at our various events throughout the year – whether they lend a hand with setting up or packing down gazebos, help manage a stand, encourage passers-by to have a go at Puppy Lucky Dip, promote our Lottery or assist with our Fun
Dog Show. Whether they dress up as a ghost for Fright Night, or bake cakes for our always popular cake stands and raffles. Whether they help raise awareness or signpost people to relevant members of staff. They might don one of our mascots for the day, paint faces or compere an event – we are so grateful. We are incredibly lucky to receive such amazing support from corporate volunteers who continue to give up their time to support several onsite projects. From clearing the woodland to creating a new dog training space, from painting the stables to clearing out our pond, from sorting out our donated goods to planting our dog sensory garden, from donating equipment to sponsoring an event – they make such a difference. Thanks to Morton Op-Shop and our incredible veterinary partners at Paragon Veterinary Group, we have been able to launch a brand new programme of support in our community providing free health checks, low cost microchipping, plus support and advice to help keep pets happy and healthy.
Introducing Consultancy 2019 saw the launch of our Consultancy Team, allowing us to offer modern, fun and effective training, not only to our dogs onsite but to our local community as well. Keeping up to date on the latest training techniques means our team can utilise a variety of training options, for example, we recently held a Tellington T-Touch workshop including ACE Freework, which is now a regular training tool for our dogs onsite. The Small Animal Team have been joining forces with the Consultancy Team to provide all our onsite dogs with individual training programs which will provide tailor-made schemes for the dog and their new adopters, complete with follow-up steps should adopters need them. Offering a variety of classes, and designing our classes and workshops based on the struggles owners are seeing, has produced some great results, as shown by the comments below:

Oak Tree welcomes many visiting dogs who enjoy the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of our dog-friendly Tearoom. Every Thursday, our long term supporter Judith and our volunteer Alison meet in the Oak Tree Tearoom as part of the Knit and Natter group. They met through this group and look forward to their weekly meeting, as well as enjoying a cup of tea and a scone. Judith and Alison are always accompanied by Millie (11), Dotty (11), Tiger (6) and Lillie (6) who love the opportunity to socialise with their canine friends. So that our fourlegged friends are not left out, the Tearoom has hand-made dog biscuits on offer which they always enjoy! Ex-resident Dotty especially loves coming back for a visit to Oak Tree as this is where she first met her loving owner, Judith! CARLISLE CHARITY SHOP Our shop in Carlisle is going from strength to strength since opening in September 2018. Selling good quality clothes, accessories, books, DVD’s, toys, games and collectables, there’s something for everyone. Thanks to fantastic donations, our stock is constantly being replenished and there’s always plenty to browse through. Come along and see what bargains you can find. KESWICK CHARITY SHOP Our Keswick shop has now been open for 6 months and is delighted to have integrated into the community, becoming a hub in Keswick and allowing more people to access our help directly. Oak Tree’s Charity Shop at 1 Bell Close, Keswick (at the back of the Inn on the Square and just off Bell Close Car Park) is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10.00am – 4.00pm and sells a wide selection of clothing, household items, books and DVD’s as well as some more specialist equipment for the fells. Come and explore with your four-legged friend and grab a bargain!

Enrichment is so important for the animals in our care, to provide them with mental stimulation, develop their confidence and the opportunity to have some fun! We take every opportunity to make sure our dogs, cats, horses and goats get a range of enrichment to reduce frustration and stress, prepare them for lives in their new homes and enjoy life. For three years we dreamt of developing our unused aviary into an area for our dogs to enjoy, providing them with different activities, flooring substrates, digging areas, tunnels, planting and water space, and finally ... thanks to funding from Mars Petcare in April, our dream became a reality. RWL Roofing spent time digging, landscaping and astroturfing the area, and, despite the weather thwarting progress with turfing, planting, pond sealing and roofing, we got there in the end! This amazing space is now used and enjoyed daily by our dogs, alongside staff and volunteers, who all reap the rewards of spending quality time in this fantastic, enriching environment. We recently launched our Pets in Rentals (PiR) scheme which has the potential to make a significant difference to the number of pet-friendly rental properties in Carlisle and the surrounding areas. Avoiding unnecessary animal relinquishment and pet suffering is at the heart of the community work at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity. Animals often have to be reluctantly given up for adoption when families move into new rented accommodation, and when the Oak Tree team read that Carlisle has the highest percentage of “no pets allowed” rental properties in the UK (68%), we felt that we simply had to help. The team liaised with various letting agents in Carlisle and researched possibilities to support landlords and tenants to develop the PiR programme. Often landlords are concerned that properties may become damaged or that the pet will cause problems within the neighbourhood. Oak Tree’s PiR programme provides landlords with tools and resources to become more confident in accepting pets in their properties. We are hopeful that local letting agencies will see the benefit of becoming members of PiR and that we will see a significant rise in the percentage of properties offering pet friendly accommodation. Pets are hugely popular and are a central part of people’s lives. Animals regularly get relinquished for rehoming when their owners are unable to take their new pets into rented accommodation. As a county of animal lovers we hope that we can encourage landlords in Carlisle to help us make our city more welcoming for animal owners and their much loved pets. A wonderful evening was had at our Ceilidh celebrating our 110th birthday. Huge thanks go to the McRobert Brothers who provided the music and to Jo Seymour who did an amazing job as Caller

This spooktastic event (now in its 3rd year) will take place in the evening and will begin once the light begins to fade... Join us to welcome the festive season in Oak Tree style. Festive stalls and cheer, Carol singers, Christmas Shopping, Grand Draw, Lucky Dips, Father Oakley in his grotto and lots more. Delicious Food & Drink will be available all day and the festive spirit will be on tap. ATTENTION STALLHOLDERS! NOVEMBER
This four-hour, half-day workshop allows you and your dog to develop calmness. Taught by our team of Certified Pro-Dog Trainers you and your dog will train using games-based techniques to help you both improve your calmness and develop a great relationship. 10.00am – 2.00pm, £40 per place.
Friday, 29th 110th Finale (and draw for Golden Ticket!) 110th Finale! Come along to a great night of entertainment at Oak Tree and get a taste of Monte Carlo with our fun Casino evening, supported by Maryport Lions. Saturday, 30th A Day of Carol Singing One of the great joys of Christmas is singing carols together. Community choir conducter Abigail Young will lead a workshop for everyone who wants to get in tune for Christmas, and learn a few new festive songs along the way.

WHY LEGACIES ARE SO VITAL TO THE ANIMALS OF OAK TREE After many years of hard work and campaigning for animal welfare, which included a move from the south of the country to the north, our Charity officially opened its doors at Oak Tree Farm in 1982 – a feat only made possible due to legacies. Further developments on site were also only conceivable because of gifts left in Wills, and this remains the case today. More than half of the work carried out at Oak Tree is paid for by legacy gifts. Put another way, two out of three meals given to the animals in our care are provided through gifts in Wills. All donations, regardless of size, provide a lifeline to the animals at Oak Tree. Choosing to leave a gift in your Will is an exceptionally personal way for you to help. Barbara Kuss, explains her generous decision to leave a legacy to Oak Tree: “My lifelong love for animals and the knowledge that my gift will help support and rehome unwanted animals at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity in the future gives me a great sense of happiness. I wish more people would support animal charities like Oak Tree and be part of their incredible work. I want to help Oak Tree Animals’ Charity continue its wonderful work for many years to come. It is comforting knowing that I will still be able to support animals long after I am gone”.
