Welcome to our Spring/Summer Newsletter 2022. After two years of so much uncertainty, Spring 2022 brings a sense of hope felt throughout our Charity. You, our valued supporters, have helped us weather the pandemic and ensured we remain ready and able to support animals in our community. Your generosity allowed us to help 2,615 animals in 2021 – providing help through our rehoming and community-based programmes. Thank you so much! This year is bringing some new challenges as animals, particularly dogs, obtained during lockdown and the pandemic are being relinquished as life returns to normal. Unwanted behaviours emerge and family finances are stretched to the maximum. The animal “boom” seen over the past two years has also led to the rise in puppy and kitten farms providing many challenges for the multitude of animals born in these environments. As I write this, I am being observed by one such pup from behind a chair who, at four months of age, has already lived in three homes and is suffering with severe fear and anxiety towards humans. He, and many others like him, will need to be supported by the Community, Rehoming and Training teams at Oak Tree to ensure they have the chance of a brighter future. You may have seen several of our Charity shops popping up throughout our region. With the huge price rises in essential items such as fuel, food and fencing, it is more important than ever that we look for continued ways to ensure that we have the financial capacity to support the animals that need us. As families also see enormous price rises, we anticipate that demand for our help will continue to increase and our shops will not only provide us with essential financial support but also provide additional ways for those in need to be able to access our services. Working for our community; caring for animals; making a difference. Oak Tree has been helping animals for 113 years. We are passionate about animal welfare and believe that every animal matters, helping hundreds of animals every year. In 2021 we were able to assist 2,615 animals and their owners.
Our mission is to help companion animals in need. Finding them a
safe and comfortable home and helping the community to understand their needs, through support and education.
We find dogs, cats and horses loving new homes, rescuing and rehabilitating them to give them the best chance of a bright future. Rehoming is intrinsically reactive, something has gone wrong. Our proactive community approach seeks to find solutions for pet owners, wherever practical and appropriate, keeping pets in loving homes and avoiding unnecessary stress and heartache. We work alongside our partners at the foodbank, social services, housing associations and other local organisations to help vulnerable pet owners who desperately need our support. Our ‘A Helping Paw’ programme provides vital short-term fostering for those who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence, helping them rebuild lives while knowing their pet is safe and well-caredfor. We run community clinics and training classes to offer welfare advice and support and we also work with schools and community groups to educate the next generation of pet owners.

Rescue Centre Licensing Welcome
Often people believe that animal charities, rescue centres and sanctuaries are regulated or licensed; however, currently they are not. While most rescue centres are reputable and do excellent work, sometimes problems can happen and animal welfare suffers through lack of knowledge, expertise or occasionally deliberate malpractice as individuals set up as a rescue centre to circumvent other animal welfare legislation due to the sectors non regulation. Oak Tree, and many of our colleagues, believe animal welfare is paramount and sign up to a voluntary standard for rescue centres with the Association for Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) and/or the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC). Members of ADCH and NEWC are assessed regularly to ensure they meet or exceed the expected welfare standards of the organisation and have access to up-to-date training and practice. Collectively, we have campaigned to achieve licensing and regulation for our sector. We were therefore delighted by the government’s commitment in 2021 to license rescue centres. A consultation by DEFRA will take place in the first half of 2022 and we hope to see legislation in place by 2023 with appropriate assessment and enforcement of welfare standards. Potentially, a real step forward for UK animal welfare, we will keep you updated!
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
On arrival in November, we could see that Matilda the dog had not been groomed for a long time, resulting in severe matting that was incredibly painful. The condition of her coat was such, that she had to be sedated at the vets to remove the worst matts. In pain, and overwhelmed by her new environment, it took time and gentle encouragement from the Small Animal Team to build her confidence. Luckily, Matilda soon came out of her shell. A couple contacted us about Matilda and it was love at first sight - for them and Matilda! She is now with her new family and getting regular trips to the doggy salon!

WHERE ARE T H E Y N OW ? Some of you may remember Noel and Dasher (now called Oska and Mika), who were the wee snotty faces of our Christmas campaign. The boys were found abandoned, just a few weeks old and suffering from cat flu. At this young age cat flu can be fatal so the boys needed immediate care. When they arrived the discharge had glued their eyes shut and even their tiny nostrils were blocked. Due to them being so young we were uncertain whether they would survive. With great veterinary support and dedicated care round the clock by our Team, the boys not only survived, but thrived! We are thrilled to say they are doing really well in their new home – a quote from their new family says it all.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
ESKY
Esky was broken in to be a ridden pony by our team and soon became a firm favourite with volunteers and staff. He has bags of character and it wasn’t long before he found a new home with Shonah and her family:
“We’re getting on so well with Esky...he’s a superstar! We were looking for a rescue pony, as so many need a home, and we felt we could offer a great home. Oak Tree Animals’ Charity were so helpful... from my first phone call, to helping us with trying Esky out, and finally getting him here. Esky has settled in very well with my other horse, and both my young boys, and I have been riding him each week. He has been fantastic when out on moorland hacks, riding in the field, and he is also popping over some jumps very well! He is super cute…We feel so lucky to have him”
Winter Work on the Yard Physical and mental wellbeing is vital for equines all year round. To ensure our horses are kept happy and healthy through the winter months we do a number of things; utilise every all-weather space available, keep the horses in pairs, small groups or in close contact with one another, take our ridden horses hacking out and our non-ridden equines out on walks, and offer enrichment puzzles and clicker training activities.
Rehoming Three of our Shetlands have recently found fantastic homes as companion animals. Flame, who came to us as an RSPCA case, found a home which will continue her education, and look to compete her in a variety of disciplines in the future.
New Residents Dartmoor ponies, Dougal and Dylan, are looking for homes as companion ponies, whilst Benji is becoming more comfortable with having his feet handled before going up for rehoming.

Orchard Yard Orchard Yard re-opened on 12th March following refurbishment! Thanks to our amazing volunteers it’s looking brighter and flowers are blooming ready for Spring. Our Wetheral Charity Shops are open daily between 10.00am and 4.00pm where you will find a variety of household items, clothes, children’s toys and games along with books.
For the equine enthusiasts the Tack Shack is open daily 10.00am to 4.00pm and we have two major Tack Sales planned for 3 July and 2 October (look out for details on our website).

Get Involved and do something Amazing! Whether you are retired, between jobs or simply love animals, if you have some spare time and would like to support our work, we would really like to hear from you. As a volunteer you will make new friends – human and furry – and learn new skills. However you become involved in a volunteer capacity, you will make a significant difference to the animals we care for. You don’t need specialist skills and we will train and support you along the way. With a variety of volunteering opportunities there really is something for everyone. Roles include working with animals, gardening and site maintenance, helping in the Tearoom and our shops, supporting our fundraising events, or, if you prefer, there are always administrative office-based tasks. EDUCATION EDUCATION Alongside working with mainstream schools, we also aim to get our animal welfare education message out to the wider community. We have recently welcomed groups of young people from Educla and Kirby Moor Schools, who both have pupils who aren’t able to access mainstream education. The pupils came to Oak Tree to develop their understanding of animal welfare and what we can all do to help the animals around us. Fostering young people’s understanding and a desire to care for animals, including in those who may find communication with people challenging, is essential to preventing problems in the future. And the children love it!

Training at Oak Tree Puppy Classes for those up to six months, and Life Skills Classes for every age after, are held regularly on site. Classes prioritise teaching new behaviours and help owners feel confident about training even after their course has finished. General classes may not be the right choice for every dog. Get in touch to find out about 1 to 1 sessions which focus entirely on your dog’s unique needs and behaviours, and allow time to dedicate to specific behavioural issues and detailed plans to help you and your dog.

New Shops Now Open! We are delighted to confirm the opening of several new shops across the region. Alongside our original shop bases in Carlisle and Wetheral, we introduced a successful shop in Keswick two years ago, and recently opened stores in Penrith, Workington, Cockermouth and Hexham.

Bioblitz Monday 2nd May Ever wondered what species live in the many diverse habitats here at Oak Tree? Join us for a fun day of exploration and identification supported by Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre (CBDC). There will be a chance to get your hands dirty searching the undergrowth for bugs and if you have your phone to hand there will be guidance for using the iNaturalist app to spot and identify nature using your phone! Simply take photos of the things you find: flowers, bugs, spiders, trees, woodlice, our site is brimming with nature! You will be able to continue to use the app in your garden and on your walks. Don’t worry if you don’t have a phone, come along anyway and join in the fun!
Run for Rescue May 2022 Our ever-so-popular month-long marathon challenge is back again in May. Sign up now for £15 and simply cover the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) in a month. Run, walk, jog, cycle, ride, paddle, hike, swim – cover the distance however you want! Join our Facebook community group and share how you get on! Don’t forget about the brand new PAWsome medal you’ll receive on completion.

Awareness on the Fells Nothing beats taking your four-legged friend for a walk in the fells of Cumbria. The picturesque landscape and company will leave a huge smile on your face… providing there are no complications. Every year fell walks are ruined by situations that could be easily avoided with a little planning and knowledge of the area. If you are attempting a new route, planning ahead is essential.
Things to look out for... Bodies of water can prove hazardous, whether by a fast moving current in a flowing river or through containing toxic blue green algae in the summer months. This can be tracked through the environment agency: www.consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/cumbria-and-lancashire/ blue-green-algae-in-cumbria-and-lancashire Adders (Viperia berus) are most commonly encountered from April to July and, being the nation’s only venomous reptile, they can pose a threat to dogs. Although they will leave you alone if you leave them alone, the risk of a dog suffering a bite is increased when they are off lead. Survival rate is high as less than 1 in 20 bites in dogs result in death. As rare as it is to receive a bite, if your pet is unlucky, pick them up and carry them to the car, then seek veterinary treatment asap.
Our Foster Heroes At Oak Tree we are lucky to have a great team of foster carers who open their homes and hearts to our animals. Fostering is an incredibly valuable service and has helped to rehome and rehabilitate many animals who struggle to cope in the kennel or cattery environment. One such lucky dog is Jackson, a 12-year-old Lurcher who struggled with being left alone and would continuously bark and howl in the kennels. Happily for Jackson, he was able to go to a wonderful foster home where he settled in really quickly to family life. His foster carers say “He’s a lovely gentle natured old gent with the heart of a puppy”.

WELL-TRAVELLED TIKE
The Community Team supported Tike and his very ill owner at the start of 2021. One of our volunteer fosterers took this lovely dog in. Tike’s owner wanted him to be able to live with his daughter once he was unable to care for Tike himself. This presented the Team with a big challenge as his daughter lives in Canada. But if we can help, support and facilitate a happy resolution then we will! Sadly, Tike’s owner died in August 2021, and Tike found himself in Oak Tree’s care again. Luckily for Tike, his loving owner’s daughter from Canada got in touch with us to ask if we had Tike. She was very keen to honour her father’s wishes and adopt Tike, so arrangements were made with Tike’s vet and an airline, and in September 2021, Tike and his new mum flew off for a new life in Canada.
Supporting the Community A Helping Paw Launched in 2019, this scheme enables Oak Tree to help pet owners who are experiencing homelessness and/or fleeing domestic abuse. During this time we have helped 20 dogs, 21 cats and 31 people plus many more with advice and support. For help, support and advice contact the Community Team via community@oaktreeanimals.org.uk
Kitten Season During 2021, the Community Team put 220 cats through our TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) Scheme for feral, community and farm cats, which included our Raffles Campaign successfully dealing with a number of unowned and stray cats in the local area.

BE A FINANCESAVVY PET OWNER Rising costs are causing concerns for us all and for pet owners it can cause real worries about how they can continue to care for their much-loved family member. We are already seeing a rise in intake requests and sadly we anticipate even more heartbreak this year as owners face some very difficult choices. While we don’t have a solution for every situation, there are a few tips for finance-savvy owners:
Pet insurance – while this might seem luxurious, pet insurance can, quite literally, be a lifesaver when dealing with unexpected vet bills if the worst happens. Preventative Care – having a good care plan for your pet e.g. worming, flea treatment and vaccinations can help stop larger more costly issues later on. Many vets offer programmes that save money on your pet’s routine care. Get baking! – making your own pet treats saves loads of money compared to shop-bought ones. You can even control ingredients, making sure they are super healthy for your pet! Nutrition – get the best quality diet you can afford. Often cheaper foods have lots of fillers meaning you have to feed more. Much less cost effective! A poor quality diet can also lead to gastrointestinal problems which may incur a costly vet bill. Shop around – pet products are widely offered with brands often available at hugely differing costs. Shopping around (both on and offline) can save pounds on the essentials. Food banks – if you are referred to a foodbank, Oak Tree works with many in the Border regions to ensure they have pet food for those in short-term crisis. Tails from the Tearoom Our dog-friendly Tearoom sees a variety of breeds who all get a treat in return for a waggy tail! Rosie, a previous Oak Tree resident, certainly enjoyed her visit! We would like to thank all our visitors for their feedback in February. It was great to hear that you would recommend us to a friend. There were some suggestions for additions to our menu – so watch this space in the coming months!
