Return back up the road, beyond the rise, and discover on the right a hidden trail to Putiki Esplanade leading to historic boatsheds, colourful houseboats, and an extensive wetland where pied stilts feed.

Then finally on to Shelly Beach Reserve, an expansive waterfront of safe swimming and family picnics, where only the distant hooting of the car ferry on the hour will remind that you are a world away from the city.
