In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Herne Bay was home to sea captains, ship owners and merchants.

The larger, more prominent villas built along the ridge-lines and waterfront were positioned so captains could look out over the Waitematā Harbour and, quite literally, watch their ships come and go. These homes were often grander than standard workers’ villas, with wider verandahs, higher studs and more commanding harbour aspects.
