Falkirk Genetics: Farming Solutions with Genetic Excellence The Chairman of Directors of the recently created Livestock Genetics New Zealand Ltd (LGNZ), Mr. Jason Hill of Aongatete, Katikati, says that finding a viable solution for agriculture is imperative. The revenue creators of our farming businesses, the livestock, are in a precarious position, and so a genetic solution is required that is swift and financially robust. LGNZ’s network of 22 regional directors are actively farming in most regions of New Zealand and hold ‘skin in the game’ and are, therefore, sensitive to the vagaries of their agriculture businesses. They range from commercial farmers to astute animal breeders across topography and breed differences, and understand the genetic requirements of most producers.
LGNZ is expanding the focus on wealth creation from animal genetics, identifying the most optimal animals within breed and species. The resulting environmental and financial fitness of these defined animals is the foundation for farm operation efficiency and profitability. LGNZ is fully funded and operational. The prime focus is about adding genetic and financial value to capital stock, marketable animals, and subsequent products. Jason Hill says the directors are inclusive within an existing client base that practises genetic selection using the proven Falkirk Index New Zealand system (FINZ); operational for nearly 40 years. The time has come for farmers to take control of their industry, back claims of excellence, and deliver quality products
to market. It is time for farmers to be offered a choice between a high-cost system or one of wealth creation. Ian Walsh, the originator of FINZ and of the Falkirk Scientific Foundation has been appointed as Director General of LGNZ. His 65 years of active farming and genetic innovation within animal breeding holds few peers. And his nearly 100 international visits to South Africa and Australia (servicing an expanded client base across the breed/ species barrier) is unique. He holds no biases in the search for the most optimal sheep and beef animals. Testimonial from client, Richard Warren: “Our association with Ian Walsh and Falkirk Genetics represents an integral part of a solution to the declining standards of meat and wool production in New Zealand.”
