The value of hay and silage in our farming ecosystem Good animal performance depends on the adequate intake of good quality supplementary feed when green pasture is hard to come by. That might be during a prolonged dry period or when the growth of grass has slowed during winter. Silage, balage and hay are made from excess grass, and form the basis of most forage-based feeding systems in New Zealand. There are other supplementary feeds, such as cereal grains and pulses, but these can work out to be very expensive per kg of Dry Matter (DM). A 2020 AgResearch White Paper on pasture-fed livestock production and products (citing previously published research) has also reported that
